SUMMARY:Interposition - Works by Lai Sut Weng
DESCRIPTION:Lai Sut Weng\, the winner of “Orient Foundation Art Award” in 2014\, will have the opening of her first Macau solo exhibition “Interposition – Works by Lai Sut Weng” in AFA on October 14 (Friday)\, at 6:30 p.m. She even creates a new series for the exhibition\, a total of nine oil paintings will be showcased and they are all Lai’s latest artworks. \n‘Interposition’ is a method of creation and a metamorphosis on Lai’s career path. Using the features of Macau’s street as the background\, create different urban amusement parks meticulously devised by the artist. The door of a house on the backstreet was transformed into an entrance to a circus. Teacups spin in the city. Streets are struck with balloons thus traffic access is not possible. Buses are occupied by huge birds. Elephant wants to play with you\, while Bear can hardly sit still and Rabbit wishes to take you out of your study… \nWhen: Opening: 6:30pm\, Friday\, October 14 \nExhibition: October 14 – November 6 \nThe gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nWhere: AFA Gallery\, 1st Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau \nHow much: Free \nFor enquiries\, please call +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Perpetual Splendour – Work by James Chu
DESCRIPTION:In Perpetual Splendour James Chu gives us a story\, a personal story about time with a life wish\, a continuous blossom\, a permanent sunshine\, a constant moon. It is a story where there’s a delicate search for what can be a blissful feeling of longing and transformation. It is a story of a search for that lost substance where memory and emotions hold musings of the eternal. We all have a limited time in the physical world but what is our relation with the finite? Is there even an end that is ours or is the notion of ending only related with the others? Maybe eternity is only an undefined moment\, a glimpse when energies are connected\, a luminous emotion radiating from darkness. \nWhen: October 24 – November 13 \nThe gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nWhere: AFA Gallery\, 1st Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau \nHow much: Free \nFor enquiries\, please call +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Urban Hikes at Ox Warehouse
DESCRIPTION:Urban Hikes – An Exchange Exhibition by Taiwan\, Hong Kong & Macao Artists was conceived during a sharing and exchange activity among artists from the three regions. \nIn a discussion about the links between artistic creation and social reality of growing up\, participants found that despite the cultural nuances\, they shared quite many common things. After discussing\, in depth\, topics like politics\, economy\, culture\, and identity\, we felt it was not enough and could be continued. \nChinese are the ethnic majority in Taiwan\, Hong Kong and Macau\, three regions with similar physical environments\, as they all face the sea and have low elevations\, and are small areas with high population density\, leading to a proximity of their urban areas and surrounding satellite towns. Furthermore\, at the regions’ urban edges\, rolling hills and hiking trails – though some of them man-made – fulfills urbanites’ eagerness for natural settings\, providing relaxation and leisure spaces after a daily busy urban life. \nIn this Urban Hike\, Taiwanese artist Li-Chen Loh\, Hong Kong artist Lee Chun Fung and Macau artist Gigi Lee walk through hiking trails\, observing cultural phenomena on city edges of their own regions. The hikes have enabled a deeper discussion and exchange of concepts\, which were aesthetically transformed into these final pieces on show in this exhibition at the Ox Warehouse. \nWhen: October 29 – December 4 (closed on Tuesdays) \nOpening ceremony: 4pm\, Saturday\, October 29 \nWhere: 2nd Floor of Ox Warehouse\, 87-97 Av. do Cel. Mesquita\, Santo Antonio\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission

SUMMARY:VAFA - Video Art For All
DESCRIPTION:VAFA (Video Art For All) is the only international video art festival in Macau. \nVAFA 2016\, organised by AFA and Orient Foundation\, brings back to the public the only Macau international video art festival dedicated to the media expression in the contemporary arts field. With a record of 266 submissions this year’s open call provided the festival with an extensive variety of artworks by artists with different origins and backgrounds. \nIn this year’s open call there also a record on female artists submissions which bring us to a much desired balance on the genre of arts practitioners. More than that is the fact that on the eight finalists that make the exhibition all the five awards of this year are going to female artists (Belgium\, China\, Germany\, Brazil and Sweden) breaking with the past and showing to everyone that their voices are rich in content and novelty. \nOn this fifth edition of VAFA the festival continues its collaboration with similar festivals around the world with a special conversation in a screening prepared by videoclub (UK) and Videotage (HK). In the past VAFA had collaborated with Videobrasil (Brazil)\, FUSO (Lisbon\, Portugal)\, Proyector (Madrid\, Spain)\, Danube Video Art (Austria). \nFor this year our highlight on the invitation artist is the work of the Russian collective AES+F with two screenings and a talk by Tatiana Arzamasova the A in AES+F. Events made possible in collaboration with Art Statements gallery (Tokyo\, HK). \nVAFA aims to transform video art and film experience in Macau into a laboratory of emotions and perceptions made with moving images. With VAFA the viewer is part of the magical world of expanded cinema where he is offered the opportunity to discover and explore the interplay between the senses and new forms of communication. \nWhen: 10am – 7pm\, November 5 – 30 \nOpening ceremony: 5:30pm\, Saturday\, November 5 \nWhere: Casa Garden\, 13 Praca de Luis de Camoes\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nMore information on screening schedule and full program is on afamacau.com

SUMMARY:AD LIB - Recent Works by Konstantin Bessmertny
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents 34 of Konstantin Bessmertny’s recent paintings\, sculptures\, installations and mixed media\, with the artist choosing not to theme this bustling\, humorous visual feast in which he shares his personal musings and wittily responds to different phenomena occurring in society. A resident of Macau since 1993\, the Russian artist once said: “I like a critical\, sarcastic point of view on a subject. I prefer to take on a serious subject as a comedian rather than as a politician… Our duty as artists is to do as much as possible to influence bureaucrats and rich people.” \nWhen: November 11 – May 28 \nWhere: 2nd Floor\, Gallery of Special Exhibitions\, Macao Museum of Art \nMore information at www.mam.gov.mo
