SUMMARY:Landscape of Change – Macao Watercolor Paintings from the MAM Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition with works from the Macao Art Museum (MAM) collection will feature watercolor paintings of old Macau. The pieces are from the mid-19th century to the 20th century and present a landscape of Macau you have never seen. It is arranged in four sections\, namely\, The Coastline\, Peaceful Time\, Fishing Sceneries and Modern Glitz. Through the perspective and works of more than 20 Chinese and Western artists\, the exhibition showcases Macau’s topographical\, landscape and social transformations over the last century or so\, while at the same time allowing visitors to appreciate the rich and diverse styles presented by different artists in their watercolors. The show gives audiences an opportunity to revisit historical Macau\, and cherish the memory of a bygone era by indulging in imagery that has disappeared forever. \n \nWatercolor only began as a popular art form in the 18th century in Europe. Due to its plasticity and convenience of use\, it was still the most preferred painting medium in the 19th and 20th centuries. With growing international trade and individual travel\, watercolor became a wonderful tool for artists to sketch local sceneries and customs. In the 19th century\, artists like George Chinnery and Auguste Borget traveled to various countries along with merchants. Those who set foot in Macau loved to depict its scenery using watercolor sketches or panoramic composition. \nSailboats anchored in the Inner Harbour depicted by George Chinnery in The Praia Grande from the South\, and exotic fluttering flags in The Forte of St. Tiago da Barra painted by Marciano António Baptista\, or the impressive Guia Lighthouse and Chapel of Our Lady of Guia seen from afar at Praia Grande – as depicted by E. Hildebrandt in Macau\, 1862\, were views that invariably caught the artists’ eye. \nWhen: September 28\, 2018—February 10\, 2019 \nWhere: Exhibitions Gallery 2/F\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free entry

SUMMARY:The City in My Heart — Creative Artwork Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ox Warehouse Art Group continues to function as a platform for young artists\, supporting and encouraging new talents to showcase their creative endeavors in Macau. On October 13\, 2018\, at the new “Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Field”\, the association will usher in an art exhibition with a new generation of artists\, entitled The City in My Heart — Creative Artwork Exhibition. \nA total of 17 young creatives\, including eight artists and nine university students\, have been invited to participate in the exhibition. Are they fascinated by the buzzing and glamorous Cotai Strip or those gambling games dubbed as wonderful entertainment? Or are they stuck in endless excavation works\, congested traffic\, and the ever-rising commodity and house prices of Macau? Do they indulge in nostalgia for the bygone era and world? Are they discontent? Do they feel helpless? Or just numb? Through this exhibition\, visitors can take a glimpse at the new generation’s unique vision of their city\, a place where they live\, work\, or study. \nParticipating artists are 2 UP Studio\, Kinson Lam\, Ella Lei\, Natalie Pun\, Ai Sio Pui Ian\, Sour Graphik and Yang Illustration. SUMMARY:Ng Fong Chao: Untitled at Fifty
DESCRIPTION:Local artist Ng Fong Chao is having his works exhibited in an event curated by Alice Kok and organized by AFA Association. Within the period of the last two years\, Fong Chao has been through two major events in his life: the death of his father and the birth of his son. The experience of his father’s passing has had a tremendous resonance in Fong Chao’s life. Since Macau AFA has invited him to hold a solo exhibition\, he has taken the occasion to create a new series of artworks dedicated to his father\, revealing in front of us the depth of his reflections upon the subject of life and death – two intrinsically interdependent subjects. \nNg Fong Chao arrived in Macau from Ningbo during the 80’s at the age of sixteen. He started work as a teenager. Although he was introduced to the harsh reality of society at such a young age\, he has always carried with him the dream of art. He laments the fact that he was separated from his father since childhood and was not able to grow up near him. \nNg Fong Chao developed his art mainly based on practices. His exploration of the artistic medium is unusually wide\, including printing\, painting\, sculpture\, performance art\, conceptual photography\, video art and installation. Even though Fong Chao has a low-profile style and is a man of few words\, he is however quite readily sarcastic to the affairs of our world. His humor is often acutely present in his artworks. One of his series of conceptual photographs sees him dressed in a wedding gown posing against the touristic and historical sites in Macau dressed as a demoiselle. His performance art is equally provocative. In many of his actions\, he can be seen half naked doing various ceremonies with the chopped head of a pig. In another\, he poses surrounded by a team of Barbie dolls that are “watching” him washing his feet. \nReaching middle age\, Ng Fong Chao does not rebel just for the sake of it. In this season of change\, he reflects upon decades of art practice in his life and reaches out for a mid-term assessment. He examines the proposition of life and death through the artistic means and life itself is his material. In the video installation artwork “Final Note” he filmed the final words of his dying father in a video. Death is not the end but a transition. In the work “Speech without Words”\, both the deathbed testament of his father and the baby babbling sound of his six-month-old son were recorded and translated anew with the voice translation application on a smartphone. These unreadable translated sentences are printed and honorably framed on the wall. Through the artistic way of thinking\, the artwork is a solemn response by the artist toward the interminable cycle of life and death. \nWhen: October 26–November 25\, 2018 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free entry \nFor more information\, check AFA’s website or call them on +853 2836 6064

SUMMARY:Mobile Voyages: Photos by Luis Gustavo Martins
DESCRIPTION:Luis Gustavo Martins is going to have some of his travel photographs exhibited at Regency Art Hotel lobby gallery in an event organized by YunYi Arts & Culture. During Luis Gustavo Martins’ several voyages around the world (mainly in the scope of his travels for teaching and conferences\, as a researcher and as an academic)\, he likes to experience and capture the atmosphere of the places he visits and the charisma of the people he meets (usually total strangers)\, as a way to feel and assimilate his impression on different cultures\, traditions\, history\, architecture and ways of living. \nBeing an enthusiast of technology\, Martins always tries to explore new ways to take advantage of technology as a novel creative tool and medium. As a result\, he started using his “always in the pocket” smartphone as a convenient lens through which he was able to register his personal and subjective view on the world around him\, coming to grips with the smartphone’s inherent image and sound limitations\, taking them as a creative opportunity\, instead of an obstacle. \nTraveling most of the times alone\, he started sharing with family and friends the images of his voyages\, in an attempt to let them experience vicariously his feelings and subjective impressions\, while at the same time making him feel a little bit more accompanied in his journeys alone and away from home. \nThis exhibition presents a selection of images of some of these journeys. The exhibition is open to the public from 10:00am–8:00pm daily. \nWhen: October 30–November 18\, 2018 \nWhere: Lobby gallery\, Regency Art Hotel\, 2 Estrada Almirante Marques Esparteiro\, Taipa \nHow much: Free entrance \nFor additional information\, check the event’s Facebook page\, Yunyi Arts & Cultural Communications Association Facebook page or The Regency Art Hotel website
