SUMMARY:Landscape of Change – Macao Watercolor Paintings from the MAM Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition with works from the Macao Art Museum (MAM) collection will feature watercolor paintings of old Macau. The pieces are from the mid-19th century to the 20th century and present a landscape of Macau you have never seen. It is arranged in four sections\, namely\, The Coastline\, Peaceful Time\, Fishing Sceneries and Modern Glitz. Through the perspective and works of more than 20 Chinese and Western artists\, the exhibition showcases Macau’s topographical\, landscape and social transformations over the last century or so\, while at the same time allowing visitors to appreciate the rich and diverse styles presented by different artists in their watercolors. The show gives audiences an opportunity to revisit historical Macau\, and cherish the memory of a bygone era by indulging in imagery that has disappeared forever. \n \nWatercolor only began as a popular art form in the 18th century in Europe. Due to its plasticity and convenience of use\, it was still the most preferred painting medium in the 19th and 20th centuries. With growing international trade and individual travel\, watercolor became a wonderful tool for artists to sketch local sceneries and customs. In the 19th century\, artists like George Chinnery and Auguste Borget traveled to various countries along with merchants. Those who set foot in Macau loved to depict its scenery using watercolor sketches or panoramic composition. \nSailboats anchored in the Inner Harbour depicted by George Chinnery in The Praia Grande from the South\, and exotic fluttering flags in The Forte of St. Tiago da Barra painted by Marciano António Baptista\, or the impressive Guia Lighthouse and Chapel of Our Lady of Guia seen from afar at Praia Grande – as depicted by E. Hildebrandt in Macau\, 1862\, were views that invariably caught the artists’ eye. \nWhen: September 28\, 2018—February 10\, 2019 \nWhere: Exhibitions Gallery 2/F\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free entry

SUMMARY:Vietnamese Boat People in Macao: Photography by Chan Weng Hon
DESCRIPTION:Vietnamese Boat People in Macao is a special and moving photography exhibition by Chan Weng Hon taking place at 1844 Macau Photography Art Space. It features 42 pictures taken by local photographer Chan Wen Hon during the 70s and the 80s. It’s the artist’s first solo exhibition and his images narrate the lives of Vietnamese boat people in Macau during this time\, reflecting the living conditions and the temporary settlements of Vietnamese refugees. The exhibition was curated by Ieong Man Pan\, Kim Chan\, Weng Io Wong and Haruka Lau. Chan Weng Hon\, who “accidentally” became a reporter in 1980 and has worked in newsrooms\, TV stations and government departments since then. \nThe exhibition shows the reality of living for Vietnamese Boat People at the time. It represents a record of the historical moment for Macau when it was once the “port of first asylum”. The scenes documented in the photos are mostly about the lifestyle and the environment of the refugees. \n \nThe conflict between China and Vietnam occurred between 1978 and 1979\, when large numbers of Vietnamese refugees escaped into Macau and other countries that consisted of asylum. On 27th July in 1978\, at the request of the United Nations\, Macau announced the establishment of a temporary camp for Vietnamese refugees. At that time\, there were three places in Macau where traces of refugees could be found\, including the area of Ilha Verde\, Taipa (now the Scout Association of Macau) and Ka Ho Refugee Centre (now Salesian Youth Ministry of Macau). \nWhen: October 30–December 14\, 2018 \nOpening Hours: Monday–Saturday\, 11:00am–1:00pm; 2:00pm–6:00pm \nWhere: 1844 Macau Photography Art Space\, 17 Edificio Loi Fat\, Lojas A e B\, R/C Rua do Infante\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor additional information\, check the event’s Facebook page or the 1844 Macau Photography Art Space’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Exhibition Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works\, features 16 sets of installations and images by contemporary Chinese artist Guan Huaibin\, presenting the light and darkness of a “garden” in a variety of forms. The showcase is divided into two sections: one comprised of nine images and the other comprised of seven related installations. The two sections form a complete work that creates an ambiance of a “garden”; whether it is the installations that make up the space or the moving images – both serve as clues for the audience to “decode” the exhibition’s theme and symbols. \nGuan Huaibin is currently the president\, professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. He has participated in several important international art exhibitions\, and his works have been collected by several art institutions. By incorporating Chinese classical garden aesthetics into his spatial installations\, the works are permeated with an alternative temperament of Chinese contemporary art. \nIn order to offer visitors a more in depth understanding of Guan Huaibin’s works\, the organizer will hold a series of activities\, including a guided tour of MAM\, guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artist”\, among others. The activities allow the audience to travel the spaces between installations and to experience the spatial aesthetics and visual enjoyment of installation art. Those interested in participating the guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artists” can register through IC’s Activities Registration System. It is all organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organized by the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. \nWhen: November 2–February 24\, 2018 \nWhere: Special Exhibition Room\, 3/F\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, please visit MAM website or call them on +853 8791 9814
