SUMMARY:Exhibition Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works\, features 16 sets of installations and images by contemporary Chinese artist Guan Huaibin\, presenting the light and darkness of a “garden” in a variety of forms. The showcase is divided into two sections: one comprised of nine images and the other comprised of seven related installations. The two sections form a complete work that creates an ambiance of a “garden”; whether it is the installations that make up the space or the moving images – both serve as clues for the audience to “decode” the exhibition’s theme and symbols. \nGuan Huaibin is currently the president\, professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. The activities allow the audience to travel the spaces between installations and to experience the spatial aesthetics and visual enjoyment of installation art. SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Ju Ming’s Sculptures at MGM Cotai
DESCRIPTION:MGM is committed to promoting art and culture to the public. With the belief of art and life are inseparable\, MGM presents Celebrating Life – Ju Ming Living World Sculpture Selling Exhibition to kick start as the company’s first public art project of the year. From now to April 7\, the internationally renowned artist’s Living World series will be exhibited at MGM Cotai. The series features Ju’s survey on human relationships with an emphasis on the aesthetic concept of merging art into life\, and life into art\, which is in perfect harmony with MGM’s mission in making art more accessible to the public. \nThe Living World series is one of the most iconic series of Ju Ming’s\, conveying Ju’s exploration on human sentiments using vivid and lively images and postures\, with numbers of works particularly depicting traditional family values. Inspired by his multicultural experiences and over 30 years of development\, Ju Ming applies both traditional and contemporary materials\, such as wood and stainless steel in this series. The wood carving sculpture is the most significant\, for Ju carves directly on a log with his signature sharp cutting strokes that create one-of-a-kind works. MGM is proud to exhibit over 40 pieces of unique wood carvings made by Ju\, including painted wood\, black and white painted wood\, as well as wood relief sculptures\, making it an extraordinary\, must-see exhibition. \nJu has begun working on his Living World Series with his colorful Painted Wood sculptures. During his early apprenticeship\, Ju was trained in the practice of painted carvings\, continuing this traditional legacy. He also assimilates traditional wood carving techniques with modern abstraction to depict social phenomena\, and preserve traditional virtue of filial piety. \nJu later shifted his focus to black and white Painted Wood and Wood Relief sculptures\, as well as sculptures left in their original raw wood color. His intention in using a minimalist palette is to give more attention to the carving of the works\, capturing the essence and gestures of his subjects in the series. The artist also twists and rolls stainless steel sheets\, giving the stainless steel sculptures a complementary sense of hardness and softness\, like the wood sculptures. \nBorn in 1938\, Ju Ming is an internationally renowned Asian artist and master of modern sculpture whose works provide inspirational and exquisite forms\, reminiscent of strokes used in Asian painting and calligraphy. The maturity of his sculptural language and aesthetic incorporates the free expression of forms and feelings\, and embraces simplicity and environmentalism. Ju channels his life philosophy and approach in his works\, by reconciling the traditional woodcarver’s technique with modern techniques and modes of abstraction. \n \nFrom 1953\, Ju was under the tutelage of master wood carver Lee Chinchuan studying painting and wood carving techniques. From 1968 to 1976\, he studied modern sculpture with Yuyu Yang\, a significant sculptor and pioneer of the modern art movement. In 1980\, Ju left Taiwan for New York City to pursue more opportunities overseas. Ju’s works from his Taichi Series and Living World Series were exhibited in New York City during this time. In 1999\, Ju announced the official opening of the Ju Ming Museum in Taipei. The mission of the museum is to record\, document and archive the process of his art-making\, as a home of the artist’s collections and to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of art. \nJu is truly an internationally recognized award-winning artist. In 1998\, he was awarded the Fok Ying Tung Award by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in Hong Kong. In 2002\, he won the 2nd Enku Grand Award in Gifu\, Japan. In 2003\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Art\, Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. In 2004\, he was conferred the 24th National Cultural Award of R.O.C.\, which is a lifetime achievement award and the greatest honor presented to members of the cultural sector whose lives are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art in Taiwan. In 2007\, he was awarded the 18th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize\, Japan. In 2011\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor for Literature\, Chinese University of Hong Kong. \nWhen: January 14–April 7\, 2019 \nWhere: Rippling Gallery\, Roaming Gallery & Floating Gallery\, Spectacle\, MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to MGM Cotai’s website or check the exhibition’s catalogue

SUMMARY:No Where There – Photography Works by Tang Jing
DESCRIPTION:1844 Macau Photography Art Space will host a photography exhibition by artist Tang Jing\, ‘No Where There – Works by Tang Jing’ January 15 to March 16\, 2019 at 1844. \n‘No Where There’ is a series of images photographed by Tang Jing since 2013. The artist selects the shooting places through careful selection and research. The creation process includes interviews\, video recordings and on-site experiences etc. ‘No Where There’\, which means ‘beautiful new world’ in the Chinese title\, is inspired from one of the three most famous dystopian novels\, ‘Brave New World’ (1932) by the English author Aldous Huxley. It is a novel set in London in 2540 CE\, depicting the writer’s imagination about the future of the high-tech civilization\, where there was no pain\, but happiness. The novel depicted how such a ‘perfect world’ has brought huge influences on the mental world of people and their social civilization\, the novel profoundly reflected the relationship between individual and collective\, as well as problems between freedom\, order and conditioning. \nSixteen images from the ‘No Where There’ series will be shown in this exhibition. The artist aims to explore the relationship between architecture\, power and aesthetics. Through documenting the situations brought by tourism consumption and rapid urban development under the appearance of beautiful cityscapes\, this series reflects a mass aesthetics trend and a lack of cultural identity recognition. Tang have photographed many European-style buildings in different cities in China\, such as the ‘Arc de Triomphe’ on Guanggu road in Wuhan\, Luodian Town in Shanghai\, ‘Eiffel Tower’ in Hangzhou etc\, recording the phenomenon of mimicry in architecture after the rapid urban and economic development. \n \nThe architectural styles of the replica buildings documented are different\, including styles of northern European town\, international landmarks\, etc. Not only does it show the replication of their aesthetic appearances\, but also presenting the difference between its imitation appearance and its inner function in public areas. The phenomenon exhibits the aesthetic demand on behalf of the local citizens\, their expectation on lifestyle\, identity and collective values. Observing these ongoing changes in the cities\, by means of new documentary photography\, the artist recorded the situation in acuity\, within this context of urban development in China today: ‘Who built these buildings? Who are the users? What were the aesthetic views of the people who built them? How will people with such views affect Chinese society today?’ \nWhen: January 15–March 16\, 2019 \nWhere: 1844 Macau Photography Art Space\, 17 Rua do Infante\, Edf.
