SUMMARY:Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government has been dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, displaying and studying Macau art works\, with the aim to promote local art to the public\, illustrating its developments and the artistic spirit of different eras. Since its introduction to Macau\, watercolour has been an important creative medium for local artists. Painters from different times have left us excellent works that have influenced later generations. Contemporary painter Lai Ieng is one of the best influencers\, who\, with his love for Macau landscapes and passion for painting\, has offered the city a rich trove of artworks. This exhibition\, Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng\, features 32 of his landscape watercolours. By following the artist’s sketching footprints\, through his keen observations and subtle brushstrokes\, visitors can discover the beauty of Macau’s scenic small alleys as well as the charm of local life. \nLai Ieng is reputed in Macau\, as well as in Mainland China and overseas\, for his watercolours of portraits and landscapes. He has studied painting under Lok Cheong (1923–2006) and also under Cheong Io Sang and Tam Chi Sang (1920–2007) among others. Apparently he acquired his painting skills in Macau but in fact he benefited from the teachings by Wang Zhaomin (1908–2003)\, known as “poet of watercolour”\, when he was studying with Wong Io Wa\, Lio Man Cheong and Lok Hei in Guangzhou back in the 1980s. \nLai developed his art during China’s reform and opening up period\, when the country opened to the outside world\, enabling Macao’s art lovers to gradually take part in Mainland’s art development trends\, see the world in a clearer light and have a better grasp of Chinese traditions\, besides forming their own artistic views. In the process Lai has been examining the roles of art in people’s life. When he was sketching and painting by himself he also taught painting\, and he and his students would accompany each other in art creation\, in spiritual support for one another. \nWhen: March 22–June 16\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check MAM’s website

SUMMARY:Saline Baths – Shi Samben Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Samben said: “When I closely examine human nature\, I’ll only feel disappointment. But when I look around at the kaleidoscope of human behaviour\, the world becomes interesting again.” \nSaline means saltwater\, it can be water from the sea and also the solution that maintains the function of our body cells. Saline is mild\, gentle and boring. The artist puts himself into a mechanism like saline\, observes and distills the kaleidoscope of human being. A “bath” is a reverse of that particular day’s dispiriting in private. A place to “bath” contains intimacy among strangers and a willful revealing of oneself. The concepts of being private and being public are intricately intertwined and being calculated\, just like when the artist is producing his personal work. \nOx Warehouse invited Mainland video artist Samben to participate in a residency project in Macau. Samben’s works had been exhibited in Shenzhen\, Hangzhou\, Beijing\, Germany and Switzerland. Born in a seaside town\, Samben chose “Saline Bath” as the theme for this project. Based on his past animation videos\, he tried to showcase this kind of intimate or ambiguous thoughts with elusive visuals\, hoping to provide some other insights into the dilemma between common philosophical considerations and people’s actual life. \nWhen: April 11–May 26\, 2019 \nWhere: Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 28530026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:"Photo-Scripts": Photography Exhibition by João Miguel Barros
DESCRIPTION:Portuguese João Miguel Barros has his photography works exhibited at Navy Yard 1 from April 12 to June 2\, 2019. “Photo-Scripts” comprises twelve short stories\, all independent from each other\, and can be read like a book of short stories. They are twelve exercises based on a certain roaming of one’s gaze but also of one’s writing fictionalised from reality\, seeking meaning in moments that could easily go unnoticed. \nIt is an exhibition of loose ends\, based on narratives that are more or less consistent\, but capable of showing a world of small complexities. It is part of a pre-conceived itinerary\, intended to reveal simple stories from almost nothing\, at times just a little something following a logic that contradicts the cliché idea that only decisive moments are worthy of being told. \nWhen: April 12–June 2\, 2019 \nWhere: Navy Yard 1\, Macao Contemporary Art Center – Navy Yard No 1\, Rua S. Tiago da Barra\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the artist’s website

SUMMARY:The Blur City: An Exhibition by Nuno Cera
DESCRIPTION:Exploring urban landscapes\, architectures\, infrastructures\, passages and everyday disruptions\, between affluence and debris\, in a continuous reflection on time\, space and its transformations has been at the centre of Nuno Cera’s work. The Blur City derives from an artistic residency in Macao\, which took place between September and October 2019\, allowing Nuno Cera to return to the region 20 years after his first visit\, supported by BABEL cultural organization and Orient Foundation. \nCentred around Macau\, Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, The Blur City presents seventeen photographs and two videos made during his second passage through China. Simultaneously a new approach to the Futureland (2008)\, presenting thirty-six photographs of a project originally conceived as visual atlas\, subjective but also narrative and documentary of cities such a Istanbul\, Cairo\, Dubai\, Los Angeles\, Mexico City\, Shanghai\, Jakarta and Bombay. Between different times\, spaces and projects\, dialogues are established between the public and the private\, the micro and the macro\, the natural and the constructed\, the old and the new\, in a complex and poetic network of unexpected relationships that provoke states of suspension and expectations of a blurred future. \nWhen: April 26–May 25\, 2019 \nWhere: Orient Foundation\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

While the British like to enjoy sweet and savoury snacks with a cup of black tea\, the French prefer cakes and sweet pastries with coffee during “Le Goûter”\, which represents the essence of their lifestyle and the way to “avoir la pêche”! As celebration of Le French GourMay\, RendezVous Lobby Bar is promoting the art and culture of French afternoon tea with three classic French desserts\, namely crème brûlée\, Paris-Brest\, and macaron. Paris-Brest was created by pâtissier Louis Durand in 1891 to commemorate the Paris–Brest–Paris bicycle race. \nFilled with fine silky cream\, Paris-Brest has a circular shape that represents a wheel and the round pastry is now a favourite all over France. As for Crème Brûlée\, the earliest known recipe was found in royal chef François Massialot’s 1691 cookbook Cuisinier royal et bourgeois. Literally meaning “burnt cream”\, crème brûlée consists of a soft custard base topped with a fragrant layer of hardened caramelized sugar. \nWith roots in Italian monasteries\, macaron was brought to France during the 16th century and was transformed by Parisian pâtissier Pierre Hermé during the early 20th century to include crispy colourful shells and a soft and moist filling. The three classic French desserts have a limited offer at RendezVous Lobby Bar in May and come with a cup of coffee or tea\, allowing guests to fully enjoy the elegance of French art de vivre. \nWhen: Tuesday–Saturday\, 2:30pm–5:00pm\, May 1–31\, 2019 \nWhere: RendezVous Lobby Bar\, Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 Rua do Visconde Paço de Arcos\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $88 per person \nFor reservations\, call RendezVous Lobby Bar at +853 8861 7213

SUMMARY:“Beauty in the New Era” Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: A Canal in Shaoxing\, by Wu Guanzhong (1977)) \nThe “Beauty in the New Era” exhibition\, held from May 4 to July 28\, features nearly 90 masterpieces by various contemporary masters from the collection of the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC)\, including masterpieces by Qi Baishi\, Zhang Daqian\, Xu Beihong\, Liu Haisu\, Lin Fengmian\, Fu Baoshi\, Li Keran\, among others\, providing a comprehensive overview of the development of Chinese art over the past hundred years. Originally debuted in NAMOC in 2017\, the exhibition had a great success facing endless queues of people of all backgrounds and age that were coming to appreciate the art works. \nWu Weishan\, Director of the National Art Museum of China\, is particularly proud of this exhibition\, which is brought to Macau as a token of close relationship of Macau with the People’s Republic of China. According to the organizer of the showcase\, “Macau is a dazzling bright pearl inlaid in the beautiful mosaic of China”\, which provides a major opportunity to show art to all. Asia is boldly highlighted here; landscapes are taken to a new level and people can almost feel the paintings coming to life. The works of Xu Beihong\, for instance: having studied in the West to search for a new meaning in Chinese arts\, the artist returned to motherland trying to introduce Western realism into Chinese paintings. “War Horse” and “A Group Gallop” are two of the artist’s highlights\, depicting figures of horses like few have. \nBaoshi cun (Baoshi wrinkle style) brushwork can also be appreciated at this exhibition. This brushwork is Fu Baoshi’s unique and vanguardist painting style. Fu employs “meticulous lines to depict the vestiges of nature to represent universal phenomena and human emotions”\, as stated by Wu Weishan\, Director of the National Art Museum of China. “Beauty in the New Era” is a tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China\, but also a celebration of Macau’s return to the motherland. History\, calligraphy\, ink\, painting\, contemporary views of China and some of the greatest artists of this country are all present elements living in Macao Museum of Art until the end of July. The audience will be enthralled by the beauty of this era\, with the art made in a country continuously growing and evolving. \nWhen: 10:00am–7:00pm\, Tuesdays–Sundays\, May 4–July 28\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 8791 9814\, email mam@icm.gov.mo or visit Art Macao’s website \n\n“Beauty in the New Era” exhibition is part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao.\nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike. \n\nStill Lives (1947)\, by Pang Xunqin

SUMMARY:A River of Divine Imperfections Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ox Warehouse is having “A River of Divine Imperfections” exhibition opened until June 16\, 2019. This solo showcase by artist Ernest Van explores themes such as religion\, science\, spirituality and practice. As science topples religion\, reason has become the principle to worship and our spirituality has been squashed. \nA fable tells how the human heart was at first located in the middle of the chest\, but after years of being disregarded\, it had gradually moved to the side. With scientific and material advances\, we have reduced distances and multiplied productivity\, yet none of this has brought about happiness or clarity for humankind. Either of ancient religions or new age spiritual healing\, no matter the name or practice it takes\, all comes from the human desire to obtain ‘inner peace’. \nThis time Ox warehouse has invited Ernest Van who graduated from the Department of Graphic Communication Arts of the National Taiwan University of Arts to exhibit at the Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site. Ernest regards of his creation as an inner exploration of the self\, producing works with the theme of ‘healing of the heart’. In this exhibition\, his work isn’t trying to convey any rational ‘idea’ or invoke ‘introspection’. Rather\, through infusing spiritual symbols and methods into this work\, he hopes to lead his visitors into a spiritual sanctuary\, where they can enter the ‘state’ and try to elicit one of the more ‘archaic’ functions of art – ‘healing of the heart’. \nWhen: May 8–June 16\, 2019 \nWhere: Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

The carnival aims to break through the geographical barriers between museums and inject them with new vitality by connecting them through the history of Praia Grande. It not only reflects the unique culture of Macao\, but also gathers creativity to create synergies at the International Day Carnival. \nOn that day\, the museums will host a rich variety of activities\, including VR racing experience next to Nam Van Lake\, storytelling of the “History and Evolution of the Streets in Praia Grande”\, workshops on “Pedal Boat in Nam Van Lake\, Clay\, Music Box”\, and miniatures of Macanese dishes in resin clay. On the Carnival day\, visitors can take photographs in a setting based on the scenic landscape depicted by Lai Ieng\, and play in the game booths at the Museum. \nIn order to encourage people of all ages and abilities to appreciate art\, MAM and the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph jointly established an educational area for the exhibition “Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum”\, presenting the exhibition’s drawings with 3D printing technology for visitors to experience art from multiple perspectives. On the Carnival day\, a display area with 3D printing technology will be set up\, extending artistic creativity to the community. On the International Museum Day\, a 3D printing experience workshop will be held\, promoting exploration experience without barriers. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s Handover to China\, together with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of MAM. \nThe Macao Chinese Orchestra and the Macao Orchestra also present a number of musical pieces at the above-mentioned exhibitions on May 25 and 26\, respectively\, bringing the audience an audiovisual experience. SUMMARY:Art Macao: Grace Kelly: From Hollywood to Monaco – Artists’ Tributes
DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Photograph of Grace Kelly at the Oscar Ceremony receiving her Best Actress Award for the film Country Girl in 1955\, by Bettmann / Photo credit: Getty Images) \n“Grace Kelly: From Hollywood to Monaco – Artists’ Tributes” is co-organized by the Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation and Grimaldi Forum of Monaco\, one of a series of activities of “Art Macao”\, a five-month mega international art cultural event. The highlight of the exhibition is an original Andy Warhol painting of Grace Kelly\, displayed in a specially constructed venue at Galaxy Macau’s Crystal Lobby. \nThe exhibition traces the story of Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly (1929–1982)\, from her Hollywood days to becoming Princess of Monaco. An important style icon of the 20th century\, Grace Kelly embodied the myths of power and timelessness which explains the continuing interest and fascination people have of her. A star of Hollywood films in the 1950s\, Grace Kelly became a princess in “old Europe”\, joining a royal family with a history which dates back almost one thousand years. \nGrace Kelly has continued to inspire artists throughout her life\, from famous photographers to visual artists such as Andy Warhol\, who portrayed her through his Pop Art prints. As an artists’ tributes exhibition\, this show highlights her role as a muse\, as well as her personal enthusiasm for artistic creation. The exhibition is exceptional in many ways; a temporary gallery was specially created for this exhibition to display collections from the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. The scenography was designed under the supervision of Dr Thomas Fouilleron\, curator of the exhibition and Director of Archives and Library of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco\, allowing visitors to go through a journey which integrates history\, heritage\, fashion\, and arts. \nWhen: May 16–August 28\, 2019 \nSundays–Thursdays: 10:00am–10:00pm \nFridays–Saturdays: 10:00am–00:00am \nWhere: Crystal Lobby\, Galaxy Macau\, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança\, Galaxy Macau\, Cotai \nYou can also join an exhibition tour\, check the exhibition’s Facebook page for dates and time \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official page \n\n“Grace Kelly: From Hollywood to Monaco – Artists’ Tributes” is part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao. \nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike.

SUMMARY:Macao Films Panorama 2019
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion once again presents “Macao Films Panorama”\, the most important local film festival\, showcasing Macau-produced features\, documentaries\, shorts and animations\, from May 17 to 31\, 2019. The Cinematheque aspires to preserve and present local films. After calling local and overseas creatives for the “Comedy Shorts Panorama” shorts competition in April they have selected some of the works to open this year’s “Macao Films Panorama”\, the best of which will be awarded on the same night. \nThe opening gala films features four remarkable works from Macau\, mainland China\, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They were selected by invited film festival curators for the grand open the festival. Local filmmaker Peeko Wong’s G.D.P.: Grandmas’ Dangerous Project follows three elderly ladies’ hilarious mission to ensure their future. Created by Hong Kong director Leung-chuen Yeung\, The Bridge reveals a family’s secrets. Chinese director Er-zhuo Wang traces the present everyday life of an idealistic student from the 1980s in Mother Eden. In Grandma’s Farting Scooter\, Taiwanese filmmaker Chuan Yang Li narrates a delightful adventure of a granny and her granddaughter. \n“Local View Power Revisited” has fourteen films commissioned by the Macao Cultural Centre for the 2017-2018 “Local View Power”. These short features\, animations and documentaries will be on the big screen again in this session\, displaying the narrative power of local talents. “Local Indies Force” is a public calling for local creatives to submit their works produced since 2017\, received a rave response earlier this year. The Cinematheque has received a great number of remarkable works by emerging talents who are furthering their studies abroad and local filmmakers who are exploring their narrative styles. \n“Macao Feature Films” is where Ivo M. Ferreira ignites us with his melancholic Empire Hotel. Set in the old district of Macau\, this feature scrutinizes the life under the neon lights that inform the tourists’ stereotypical imagination of the city. Another feature to impress is made by Singaporean director Thomas Lim. Filmed on an iPhone\, Sea of Mirrors follows a Japanese actress who attempts to regain her fame in a visit to a fan in Macau. The work was shot in Macau and Los Angeles. \nThe “Local Animation Landscape” is a new session. It consists of eight works sure to warm the audience’s heart and soul. In recent years\, many fabulous animation works have fascinated the audience and critics alike. With this additional session\, they hope to encourage filmmakers to explore and experiment in the animation world. \n“Special Screenings” once again work with curators from three film festivals – FIRST International Film Festival in Xining\, IFVA in Hong Kong and Golden Harvest Awards for Outstanding Short Films in Taipei. Under their recommendation\, local filmmakers will have the invaluable opportunity to watch recent works from their peers. The curators will also come and meet the audience and share the anecdotes behind the works. \nWhen: May 17–31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: Each ticket costs MOP $60 \nFull-time students and senior citizens age 65 or above can enjoy 50% discount.
