SUMMARY:"NO YA Ark: Invisible Voyage – You Don’t Know Me At All Installation Exhibition"
DESCRIPTION:The lowly red shrines and altars of Earth God at the Door (Men Kou Tu Di) and God of Wealth (Cai Shen) scattering across Macao\, at the door corners of buildings\, residences\, and stores\, are at the center of this exhibition. These Earth Gods look like the Land Gods in Taiwan. But in Taiwan\, a whole village or a whole neighborhood can only have a Land God temple; by contrast in Macau\, the small\, fine shrines and altars of Earth God and God of Wealth are ubiquitous\, on almost every street and alley\, literally hidden throughout Macau across its glamorous urban fabric\, with their humble presence easily being ignored by rushing passers by. \nThat said\, these Earth Gods and Gods of Wealth whose statues are made from materials such as marble\, metal\, wood or even plastic\, have become part of the daily cityscape for Macau and its people. Through the city residents’ folk religion in everyday life\, we try to present the impression it gave us – hurrying visitors just passing by. \nWhen: December 14\, 2019–February 2\, 2020 (closed on Mondays) \nWhere: 1/F and 2/F\, Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, visit their website\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Macau Canidrome – Pouching Tsai Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Pouching Tsai was born in Chiayi in 1986 and currently lives and works in Tainan. He mostly work with video and installation\, starting initially by transforming values in the values system of contemporary society. Recently\, however\, his works mostly use different methods such as misuse and forgery to create from systems in biological sciences. \nAs a child\, he loved animals – he enjoyed learning related knowledge about different creatures\, which often were an inspiration for the him. The knowledge itself\, however\, is not actually the bridge between the artist and animals\, rather it is some sort of files with “powerful yet conventional truths” behind them. \nThese files have their own system of logic and research methods\, which he uses as he collects them in a files archive. Tsai implements misuse\, misorder\, and fabrication to the system of these files and then fills it with unconventionality to shake the powerful yet conventional truths. \nWhen: December 14\, 2019–February 11\, 2020 \nWhere: 1/F and 2/F\, Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, visit their website\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:“Reflecting on the Human Condition: A Retrospective of Roy Andersson’s Films”
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Still from Andersson’s film “Second Floor” \nCinematheque．Passion presents a retrospective of 76-year-old Swedish film director Roy Andersson’s compelling storytelling between December 20 and 23\, 2020. Andersson’s latest work just earned him Best Director award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. What fascinates his fans is his signature narrative elements\, such as tableaux-like structure\, actors with white-painted\, pasty-looking faces\, deep existential thinking\, long shots\, absurdity. In this retrospective\, four works are featured to discuss his creative path. \nAndersson’s first feature A Swedish Love Story (1970)\, featuring a coming-of-age summer love story\, shows Andersson’s being influenced by Italian Neo-Realism narrative. Andersson changed his style completely in his next feature. No producer in Sweden wanted to work with him\, but this misfortune became a blessing in disguise. For the next 25 years\, Andersson worked in advertising and did like many other art film directors: he made ads to fund his own independent filmmaking. \nSongs from the Second Floor (2000)\, Andersson’s third feature film met with critical acclaim\, winning the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. When You\, the Living (2007) came out 7 years later\, it was clear that a trilogy was in the making. Throughout the trilogy\, we find sequences where characters look/speak directly at the camera\, and where the boundary between reality and dream\, past and present\, is blurred. You\, the Living (2007) contains several scenes where characters describe a recent dream; the following scenes depict that dream or nightmare. These dream sequences capture humanity's dreams and fears\, and the best and worst of how we treat each other. \nThe final film in the trilogy\, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014)\, also mixes past and present time. It is also the first Swedish film to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. In several anachronistic sequences\, historical figures (or elements) from the past\, such as King Charles XII of Sweden\, appear in present time. \nWhen: Friday–Monday\, December 20–23\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, check their official website

SUMMARY:A Pearl of the Sea - Exhibition of Macao’s Urban Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Macau has been increasing land resources through reclamation since the mid-19th century\, which subsequently has had a profound impact on its overall urban development. The gathering and integration of different cultures over the past centuries have resulted in the combination of Chinese and Western styles in the city’s architecture and the emergence of new landscapes amid urban development. To complement the exhibition\, an educational area and multimedia installations have been made available inside the venue to give visitors a more realistic and intriguing experience of Macau’s urban development. \nWhen: December 27\, 2019–September 6\, 2020 \nWhere: Macao Museum\, 112 Praceta do Museu de Macau\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2835 7911 or check the event’s website

SUMMARY:Game – Gigi Lee’s Multimedia Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The notion of play has long been a crucial factor in our lives\, as our doings integrate and unfold in games. When technology advances\, the world of gaming has moved away from interactive equipment and manifested in virtual reality. The gaming industry has reflected on forty years of technological developments and the changes of human values\, at the same time\, the game industry continued to shape our economic structure. In place of physical value\, the next generation will be driven by the utility of a digital future. \nThe 00s grow up in the intangible digital world\, in a society that would be characterized by the digital assets of animation\, virtual Idols\, game accessories and virtual currencies. For his video installation “Super Mario Clouds”\, Cory Arcangel has tweaked the game’s code in a cartridge of Super Mario Brothers\, presenting his work as a game within the game. Forty years have passed since Super Mario Clouds came out\, and the mainstream of game culture is now dominated by virtual and augmented reality. As we maneuver in digital games\, it is becoming hard to tell reality from fantasy. In such context\, how do we transfer our real life values into the digital world? The exhibition investigates the latest gaming technologies with traditional game consoles\, by inviting the audiences to rethink on the real and digital world. \nWhen: December 28\, 2019–February 16\, 2020 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, 15 Rua do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:New Year's Eve Double Bill - "City Lights" X "Years of Macau"
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion brings Macau audience a New Year’s Eve Double Bill of Charlie Chaplin’s classic “City Lights” and the hotly-anticipated “Years of Macau” featuring nine local directors’ stories on December 28\, 29 and 31. Take an over-100-years cinematic adventure with and feel the magic cinema brings to a city! In Cantonese and English with Chinese and English subtitles. \nLights are shed on images through projection\, what follows is changes in urban cultural life. In 1895\, when the first ever film The Arrival of a Train came out\, the audience thought a real train was coming directly at them. They were scared and screamed\, but shortly afterwards realized the magic of cinema. When cinema appears in a city\, magical or fantastical things could happen. In the early years\, cinema meant silent films. After a few decades\, sound took the main stage. The film City Lights appeared at this cinematic crossroads\, as Charlie Chaplin closed off the silent film era with this classic. The film also saw Chaplin’s career peak. He poked fun at the world through the love story of a poor man and a blind woman. The idea of true love returns after sacrifice warms up the heart of the indifferent city. \nIn 1910\, Macau had its first cinema\, Teatro Vitoria. Macao people got to enjoy the magic of cinema; however\, local filmmaking started its journey in the last decade. Years of Macau gathers works by nine local filmmakers on the important 20th anniversary of the Macau handover. The filmmakers chose a year during these two decades as the background for their stories\, including the 10th anniversary of the handover\, the 2012 phenomenon\, and Typhoon Hato in 2017. They show how the city’s citizens got through all the difficulties in this little town\, as well as their moving life experiences. \nFrom City Lights (1931) to Years of Macau (2019) there is a century-long interval. Filmmaking happens in different corners of the world endlessly. No matter how much difficulties and changes\, life experiences remain the key theme of cinema. Towards the end of 2019\, many miraculous things will happen. Let’s sit in the cinema\, enjoy the films and wait for the next miracle. \nWhen: Saturday\, Sunday and Tuesday\, December 28\, 29 and 31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, visit their website

SUMMARY:Macau Zentangle Art Joint Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is arranged by four locally certified Zentangle teachers who are Vibian Kou\, Ron Loo\, Velda Chan\, and Katniss Ao Ieong\, where the artworks of certified Zentangle teachers and their students will be demonstrated. The artworks consist of cooperated creation\, merged creation and Zentangle inspired art\, and more. \nZentangle art originates from the U.S. which is the new rising art style. It is a relaxing drawing method that allows artists to relieve pressure and gain self-recognition. When drawing zentangles\, simple lines are applied to draw pretty and complicated patterns\, under a certain framework with personal thoughts added\, so as to achieve a state of relaxation and concentration. \nSince zentangle students come from different ages and career backgrounds\, they take away their own unique interpretations after working with zentangles. These students bring interesting stories to share. The aim of this exhibition is to promote zentangle so that we can experience zentangle art as being tangible. Art is not supposed to be untouchable. Everyone can enjoy creating art that can positively impact others. \nWhen: January 7–13\, 2020 \nWhere: Rui Cunha Foundation\, GF 749 Avenida da Praia Grande\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page
