SUMMARY:Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion
DESCRIPTION:In order to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival\, the “Performance to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion”\, is held on October 1\, 2020. \nThe ethnic dance drama Awakening Lion reflects a spiritual “awakening” materialized in the figure of the “lion”\, narrating the story of two teenage lion dance dancers who achieve a self-awakening and growth when making various life decisions\, manifesting the spirit of the Chinese nation–fighting bravely for honor and strength. The drama integrates the essence of Lingnan culture\, including Southern Fist (Nanquan)\, Southern Lion Dance (Nanshi)\, and woodblock narrative singing\, seeking to pass on and promote the intangible cultural heritage of the Lingnan region. \nThe drama presents the lion’s movements in a vivid manner by integrating the horse-riding stance from the Southern Fist and the acrobatics unique to lion dance into the performance. Produced over three years\, the dance drama achieves bold innovations in dance\, stage design\, lighting\, music\, and costume\, and is highly acclaimed by the audience. \nAdhering to the development concept of “a repertoire\, talent\, and market-oriented theatre”\, the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre gathers an array of artistic talent and has produced and staged a wide range of excellent works. Amongst their productions\, the Awakening Lion has received many awards\, including the “11th Lotus Awards” for Chinese Dance – Dance Drama Category in 2018. \nWhen: 7:30pm\, Thursday\, October 1\, 2020 \nWhere: Grand Auditorium\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $100–200 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 8394 3721 and for ticketing\, call +853 2855 5555 \n*Tickets can be purchased from September 3 onwards. SUMMARY:We Are (Q)Here
DESCRIPTION:Comuna de Pedra has organized a set of three shows happening on different nights at different venues to highlight some of society’s minorities. “Stories of the oppressed shine with pride!”\, the organizers claim. This is not merely a single story or performance but multiple stories and performances happening at the same time in different districts. \n“With the development of society\, we have the chance to listen to more stories of these minorities. However\, due to an excess of information in the modern world\, people do not have enough time to digest and thereby only see the surface\, which leads to more labeling. Often times\, we think critically without truly or deeply understand things. During this performance\, we hope to create a private space for the majority group to really listen and understand these stories of the minority groups. These young people have all gone through tough times. Because of being different and not fulfilling the standards and expectations of the majority\, they are negatively labeled and rejected by the society and even their families.”\, Comuna de Pedra says. \nThe plays were created by Wong Weng Chon\, directed by Zé\, and are performed by Oscar Cheong\, Chan Ka Hou\, Tam Suk Ha\, Loretta Lou\, Bobby Leong\, Si Tou Wai Wa\, Chao Ka Wang\, and Un Iat Hou. The shows are suitable for people aged 16 and above. \nWhen: 7:30pm\, 8:30pm and 9:30pm\, Thursday–Sunday\, October 8–11\, 2020 \nWhere: Mico Bar\, 78A Rua de Tomás Vieira\, Macau\, Terra Drip Bar\, 364 R. 1 de Maio\, Macau and Live Music Association\, 50 Avenida do Coronel Mesquita\, San Mei Industrial Building 11B/F\, Macau \nHow much: Prices range from MOP $170–700 (bundle tickets) \nFor more information\, send an email to the organizer at comunadepedra@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:50 degrees N • Watercolour Exhibition by Kim Mok
DESCRIPTION:At this exhibition\, the artist\, Kim Mok\, displays more than twenty watercolor works\, which record some of the scenes she saw while traveling. The works also depict some old streets and narrow alleys in Macau and show her feelings for those old buildings that have disappeared. Last year\, she chose to return to the city where she lived\, Brighton\, and hold her first solo exhibition. Her purpose is to take Brighton as a starting point for her art exhibition. This time\, she wants to continue this exhibition in Macau. In addition\, to show the public scenes that she recorded during her travel\, she also hopes to take this opportunity to promote watercolor art and let more people get to know her and her works. \nTired of an immutable life? Hate that you always go the same way and make the same mistakes? A trip away challenges your own habits and opens up your perspective and flexibility in looking at things. It lets you temporarily break out of that boring routine\, re-plan your own direction\, and inject new energy into your future”\, the exhibition’s curator explains. \nKim Mok was born and grew up in Macau. She obtained a master’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Saint Joseph and a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts of Macao Polytechnic Institute. She has loved painting since she was a child. She has a special fondness for watercolor art and has explored in the field of watercolour for many years. \nDuring the past decade\, she participated actively in painting exhibitions organized by art organizations and also in public painting competitions in Macau\, she has won various awards from these painting competitions. In order to focus on research and improve her watercolor technique\, she gave up her job four years ago and went to the UK to study and travel to broaden her horizons. During her studies\, she often went to art galleries to practice painting with local artists and exchange painting techniques. She also traveled extensively to various European countries to learn about the cultural history and customs of people in different countries\, in order to combine the bits and pieces of the journey into a personal exhibition. \nWhen: October 10–30\, 2020 \nWhere: Green Houses\, 55-57 Avenida Coronel Mesquita Road\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Art Power Jamming – Friendship Chapter: “Taste in City” by Vanda Chan
DESCRIPTION:Ark-Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents an art program entitled “Art Power Jamming”\, under the theme of “Friendship Chapter”. The program\, which is sponsored by the Macao Foundation\, and supported by the Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District and 10 Fantasia\, features seven unique shows presented by six Macau artists (members of AAMA) with diverse backgrounds. The exhibition series runs from August 2020 until July 2021. \nVanda is a Macau designer\, illustrator\, and freelance painter. Most of her creative inspiration comes from people\, animals\, and interesting things in her daily life\, hoping to explore new ideas to evoke her creativity. \n“With the rapid development of the city where Chinese and Western cultures co-exist\, you will encounter different kinds of small shops hidden in the corners of the city. They are still working hard to create a unique taste of this city. From a child to growing up to work in this society\, I visit some small shops and eateries occasionally. It might be caused by my childhood taste preference\, KOLs’ recommendation\, time limitation which makes me eat simply\, or evoking the nostalgic taste or remembrance of someone! Perhaps the city has lost its nostalgic flavor. Whether there is still human touch or not\, I still love to savor the unique taste of this city\,” the artist explains. \nWhen: October 10–November 27\, 2020 \nWhere: Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District\, 10 Fantasia\, 10 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:"Into The Light" – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong
DESCRIPTION:“Into The Light – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong” is Macau artist Sisi Wong’s solo exhibition to take place in AFA Macau. Organized by the Macau Art For All Society\, this showcase is part of the “New Generation．New Media” – Art Exhibition Series. Sisi Wong was born in Macau and moved to Taiwan when her childhood. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Fine Art Department from the National Taiwan University of Arts\, majoring in mixed media. The solo exhibition “Into The Light”; was started by the work “Pantheon”; shot in Rome\, which shows that she is trying to express herself while looking back to the art history of light by taking the physical and mental inspiration from this majestic historical building. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program: A Route – Feng Xiaofeng Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Feng Xiaofeng\, the current artist-in-residence at Ox Warehouse is a young sculptor. In recent years\, with his creation focusing on multimedia interventions into sculptures\, he uses musical instruments\, installations\, sounds\, furniture or everyday objects as well as other elements and methods to create artworks\, re-deconstructing their attributes and definitions\, thus blurring the objects’ original attributes\, and with artistic languages\, turning them into things of new definitions. Through exploring sound and visual arts\, he defines his own artistic direction with sounds\, time and image. \nIn this residency program\, Feng Xiaofeng makes an exploration using sound art\, mainly using such elements as local opera or objects\, through the movement of the record player. When the original track deviates\, new sounds are produced. The artist then records the movement and sounds in video\, and finally accomplishes his work in the format of video installation. Feng’s sculptures\, installations and video works constitute an exploration of societal and development trajectories that serves to link his imagination of the past and the future outwardly and inwardly in an artistic way. \nWhen: October 24–December 6\, 2020 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

This movie legend once said\, “I don’t throw bombs\, I make films.” \nIn a life span of 37 years and a film career spanning over 13 years\, the number of Fassbinder’s works totaled 44\, including three short films\, a television series of five episodes\, and the 14-part Berlin Alexanderplatz. Whether the audiences watched his works at the Director-in-Focus session in KINO Macao 2018\, they could still know more about this inspiring film talent from another perspective this time. What is also thrilling is the screening of Enfant Terrible in Macao marks the Asia premiere of the film after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. \n \n“Rise Up! Women!” Director-in-Focus Session: Margarethe von Trotta \nInfluenced by the French New Wave\, the New German Cinema\, during the period between the 1960s and 1980s\, saw the emergence of numerous acclaimed directors. The most exceptional female director from this batch is Margarethe von Trotta\, who has started independent productions since the 1970s. Aged 78 now\, she has written and directed over 10 films\, including Marianne and Juliane (1981)\, Rosa Luxemburg (1986)\, Rosenstrasse (2003)\, and Hannah Arendt (2012)\, which are all highlights of the German cinema and showcase her distinctive auteur style. \nThe images of each female character in her works do not only break conventional gender stereotypes but are also exquisitely crafted to showcase the female aesthetics in the spiritual\, intellectual\, and independent aspects. The main visual design of KINO Macao 2020 is inspired by her masterpiece Rosa Luxemburg\, depicting the title character as a rose in pursuit of free will and freedom albeit hardship. Coincidentally\, many movies in KINO Macao 2020 are based on a female perspective\, from kids to the elderly\, from the past to the present\, each illustrating visionary and powerful women–perseverant\, intellectual\, and unique. \nWide Array of Outreach Activities to Enhance Depth and Scope \nApart from Cinema Alegria\, KINO Macao 2020 also takes place at Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, which boasts a serene environment for the screening of four major films — including System Crasher\, Rosa Luxemburg\, Marianne and Juliane\, and Faraway\, So Close! — followed by post-screening sharing sessions hosted by Macao film critic Quinton Tang\, Hong Kong film critic Joyce Yang\, and film scholar Dr. Derek Lam. Besides\, there are also four talks on different topics this year: Philosophy Workshop: “Do We All Have the Banality of Evil? — Hannah Arendt’s Philosophy”\, “Theatre and Rainer Werner Fassbinder”\, “Literature — Peter Handke and Wim Wenders”\, and “Judith Kerr’s World of Picture Books”. These talks allow the local audiences to engage with the film festival through artistic perspectives. \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 is the first film festival presented by CUT after the end of its operation of Cinematheque‧Passion. We are grateful for the continuous support from Goethe-Institut Hong Kong so that KINO Macao could be held once again. It is a challenging task to organize a film festival in the absence of venues\, funding\, and sponsorships\, but it’s fortunate that there is a group of vigorous and diligent film enthusiasts\, who work side by side to strive for the best results and to overcome any challenges. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There might be ups and downs along the path\, but as long as the audiences appreciate our efforts\, it is believed that our world will see the blooms of flowers one day. \nWhen: November 6–16\, 2020 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, 27 Calçada da Vitória\, Macau \nHow much: TBA \nFor more information\, send an email to info.cutcompany@gmail.com or check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall No. 3 (2019)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nThe Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling showcases nearly 50 pieces and sets of sketches and oil paintings which cover various periods of He’s artistic pursuit\, including his new works from 2019. From these exhibits\, visitors will catch a glimpse of his artistic development and feel his vigorous and endless creativity. \nThis exhibition also showcases House with No Roof and Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall\, the large-scale paintings completed by He last year. He has a fondness for architecture; he contemplated and constructed the relation between the figures and the architectural environment in his Labyrinth Tower series\, and he designed the He Duoling Museum by himself. He thinks highly of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s ‘less-is-more’ approach and has integrated the architectural philosophy into his artistic language: using subtractive techniques\, he conveys the subtlety and fullness in the refined yet simple composition of his paintings. \nThe figures depicted by He are mostly ordinary people from real life\, some of whom are his friends or family members (to draw their portraits requires the artist’s projection of private feelings). Nevertheless\, these figures have transcended the mundane reality since they are elevated in the realm of art – they are who they are\, but also no longer as such; they have already entered the artist’s imaginative context\, evoking a sense of mysterious vagueness and a metaphorical\, poetic quality. Except for the Wild Flowers series that he is currently obsessed with\, he mainly portrays human beings\, including the elderly and babies\, but mostly young women. \nWomen are undoubtedly the subject that can best represent the beauty of divine creation\, and women who ‘lead us to transcendence’ are his favourite subject. In his works under the Rabbit series\, such as The Rabbit Runs Downhill\, The Rabbit Dreams of the Apple\, Ophelia the Rabbit and Shalott the Rabbit\, the background is shrouded in blurry mist; figures in the paintings\, especially Ophelia and Shalott\, have been transplanted from the Western context to the specific ambience created by the artist and therefore attributed an indefinite quality of polysemy to the works\, leaving viewers room for multiple interpretations. Meanwhile\, their bodies are frail and fragile like the exquisite eggshell porcelain that can easily break at the merest touch\, just as beauty itself is delicate\, elusive and transient. \nBlue Bird 1984 (repainted in 2009)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nHe Duoling is a prominent figure in the development of contemporary Chinese painting. He rose to fame in the 1980s and his works such as Spring Winds have Awoken\, Youth and The Crow is Beautiful have brought a fresh visual experience to viewers and caused a sensation in the art scene. During his artistic career spanning over four decades\, He has always lived in Chengdu\, Sichuan province–the city where he was born\, except for a short journey to America. \nInstead of yearning for the so-called ‘centre’\, He Duoling chose to stay at the periphery and adhere to his artistic path. Distancing himself from the bustling\, chaotic and restrictive ‘centre’\, he instead delved into his own world without any distraction and roamed the realm of art in response to the call of beauty\, and reached his self-determined centre in total freedom and relaxation. As he absorbed the essence of both Chinese and western paintings and explored variations while staying true to his roots\, He has acquired exquisite painting skills and developed an elegant and poetic\, simple yet mysterious painting style. \nWhen: November 6\, 2020–March 21\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:Notes By The Sea – A Shi Wanwan Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chinese artist Shi Wanwan is invited to hold a solo exhibition as part of Ox Warehouse’s Artist-in-Residence program and first held in Mong-Ha Villas (Vivendas Verdes).
