SUMMARY:German Film Festival Kino@Macao 2019
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion and Goethe-Institut Hong Kong team up for the fourth time to present the German Film Festival Kino@Macao 2019 from October 19 to November 13. The festival features ten recent thought-provoking German works\, two “Macao Special” films and four compelling works from director-in-focus Volker Schlöndorff\, followed by a talk that will explore the artistic practice of this German film maestro. \nAdapted from a real-life event\, opening film Balloon transports the audience back forty years when Germany was split between the East and West. Portraying a family that plans to escape East Germany to the West in a hot-air balloon\, this compelling film depicts people’s hope and fight for freedom. \nBased on a sensational “honor” killing event\, A Regular Woman charts a Muslim woman’s experience of oppression. Gundermann unveils the relationship between East German secret police Stasi and Gerhard Gundermann\, an East German singer-songwriter who tragically died in 1998. Roads is about the friendship between two young men in search of their beloved ones throughout a hilarious and exciting journey. The Most Beautiful Couple investigates hidden desire through the traumatic and dark experience of a middle-class couple. Sweethearts brings you a moving friendship between single-mother-and-criminal Mel and her hostage. 25 km/h unites two brothers at their father’s funeral\, and a journey for the meaning of life develops. Documentary Chris the Swiss traces the mysterious death journalist Chris\, who is the director’s admired cousin. The Collini Case uncovers a scandal from World War I and a murder. In The Mover\, 60-year-old mover Walter kicks tenants out their houses for a money-laundering syndicate\, until one day he faces a dilemma: the tenants he has to kick out are his son and daughter-in-law. \nStill from The Collini Case\, 2018 | Courtesy of Cinematheque Passion \nDirector-in-focus explores Volker Schlöndorff\, German film maestro and prominent figure of New German Cinema movement\, turns 80 this year. His remarkable works have earned him the Palme d’Or and Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. His portfolio spans over thirty works and performing arts works. The session\, which offers a broad view of his creative paths spanning twenty years\, features Baal (1969)\, Young Törless (1965) and The Legend of Rita (2000). These hard-hitting works illustrate Schlöndorff’s excellent adaptations of the literary canon and criticize social oppression through the character of the rebellious anti-hero. Led by Dr. Derek Lam\, a film talk follows to give an in-depth understanding of Schlöndorff’s practice. \nMacao Specials with talks by famous authors Lotte at the Bauhaus depicts a young woman as she strives for emancipation and creative development. Before the screening\, German author Theresia Enzensberger gives a talk on women during Bauhaus’s early years. Another work exclusively for Macau audiences is Babylon Berlin Ep. 1-2. Combining the first two episodes of this high-budget and chic TV series\, the screening brings us the thrilling story of Gereon Rath\, a police inspector on a secret mission in the Weimar Republic during the post- World War One period. The screening is followed by a talk by writer Arne Jysch\, who adapted the original book into a graphic novel. \nWhen: October 19–November 13\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 \nFull-time students and senior citizens age 65 or above can enjoy 50% discount \nTickets are available from Saturday\, October 5\, 2019 onwards \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2585 or check their website \nStill from Balloon\, 2019 | Courtesy of Cinematheque Passion

SUMMARY:Shi Fu Miz Festival - Autumn 2019
DESCRIPTION:Shi Fu Miz Festival returns to Hong Kong this October for its fifth iteration. On October 26 and 27\, 2019\, the beloved boutique festival will once again settle its sound system on Cheung Chau\, a small island just 30 minutes from the mainland by ferry. There\, near the island’s idyllic golden sand beaches\, three stages will unfold in the grasses of Sai Yuen Farm. The musical programme once again centers around house and techno and will be sidelined by plenty of dusk till dawn activities like yoga\, workshops\, tattoos\, street art and martial arts. \nSince its inception in 2016\, the festival has rapidly grown and now welcomes an intimate audience of 2\,000. After seeing first hand the demand for intelligent electronic music\, a lack of platforms to showcase these kinds of artists\, and a desire to grow the regional music scene\, since 2019 Shi Mu Fiz has evolved into a biannual event. It has now become synonymous with eclectic and forward-thinking artists who push the boundaries of electronic music in a mystical setting that evokes feelings of inclusivity and freedom. Most importantly\, this year\, the festival will further its commitment to sustainability by holding eco-talks and beach cleanups\, as well as setting new goals towards its journey to becoming zero-waste. Unifying a tribe of people responsible for and sensitive to environmental issues\, Shi Fu Miz looks to become a sustainable exemplary by being a low waste event that forbids the use of plastics bottles on site. Festivalgoers are instead encouraged to bring their own reusable bottle and take advantage of the free water dispensers scattered across the site. \nOther initiatives will be introduced this year include replacing the plastic bags usually found in rubbish bins with biodegradable bags. Stages and decoration will also be built up of recycled and upcycled materials. Finally\, the festival is encouraging its guests to seek out more information surrounding sustainability by participating in eco-talks\, eco-workshops\, and more. Shi Fu Miz Festival is a music and art project created by the Hong Kong-based creative agency: FuFu and the music collective La Mamie’s from France. Their mantra is to offer a varied program of worldwide electronic music combining live music\, DJ sets and original cultural activities around art in a humanized festival\, where the spirit of the well-being is the keyword. \nSaturday’s line-up includes Camion Bazar\, CARISTA\, Club Kowloon\, Josey Rebelle\, KiNK (live)\, La Mamie’s\, LB aka LABAT\, Lena Willikens\, Max Davis\, Mengzy\, Peach b2b Shanti Celeste\, Or:la\, Stephen Andarakis\, Utopia Hong Kong and Yukari BB. SUMMARY:"By the Light of the Moon - Works by Hong Wai"
DESCRIPTION:Since an early age\, Hong Wai was attracted by the oriental aesthetic of Chinese Ink Art. Later in her life she started to travel around from Macau to Taiwan and then to France. Perhaps\, her rebellious genes must meet the French revolutionary soil. There are mainly two series of artworks for Hong Wai solo exhibition\, which are “Feminine Landscape”; and “Moonlight Series”. \n“Feminine Landscape”\, is a declaration of feminism in traditional Chinese ink painting. After a long period of time painting strokes of the lace pattern weaved on the paper\, Hong Wai wanted to return to Nature. Her latest work\, “Moonlight Series”\, is a removal of concept. Using the composition of photography to freeze the elements of nature\, and then slowly and leisurely\, she continues to do what she likes the most: painting\, by the light of the moon. \nWhen: November 1–December 5\, 2019 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check their website \nFeminine Landscape series (1901)

SUMMARY:Off Menu Hong Kong 2019
DESCRIPTION:Off Menu\, the latest and greatest addition to T. Dining’s repertoire of inventive dining experiences\, unveils its line-up for the highly anticipated three-day gastronomic festival. Held between November 15 and 17\, 2019\, at The Peak Galleria\, Off Menu is a celebration of Hong Kong’s dining scene and those who have shaped it. \nOff Menu showcases local flavours reimagined in unexpected new ways by the world’s most innovative chefs\, mixologists and tastemakers. The event is anchored by chef collaborations between Hong Kong and Macau’s culinary heavyweights and their international counterparts to create twelve one-off dishes using local ingredients. Representing Hong Kong are Richard Ekkebus of Amber\, Palash Mitra of Rajasthan Rifles\, May Chow of Little Bao Diner\, Vicky Cheng of VEA\, Vicky Lau of Tate Dining Room\, Uwe Opocensky of Petrus\, and Tam Kwok Fung of Wing Lei Palace. These trailblazers will be joined by Richie Lin of Mume (Taipei)\, Jordy Navarra of Toyo Eatery (Manila)\, Hisato Hamada of Wagyumafia (Tokyo)\, Nobu Namiki of Kermis (Tokyo) and Simon Rogan of L’Enclume (Cumbria\, UK) and Roganic who will be flying in especially for Off Menu. \nThese collaborations are centered on a simple premise: local ingredients spotlighted by two chefs with distinct culinary styles who will be working together for the very first time. One such pairing is Richard Ekkebus and Jordy Navarra who will create two brand new dishes together. Mitsuhiro Araki\, of soon-to-open The Araki that will be taking up an exclusive residency at heritage hotel House 1881 this winter\, will also make a special appearance. The acclaimed master of Edomae-style sushi will be showcasing his tuna cutting skills and share some special treats with event-goers. \nOff Menu also takes pride in championing the next generation of rising culinary stars\, Stephanie Wong of Roots\, Joanna Yuen of Nobu and Eleven Madison Park alum Leonard Cheung. These up-and-comers will draw on their deep-rooted connections to Hong Kong to create a selection of canapés that highlights local heritage ingredients. Each chef’s chosen ingredient embodies a personal story and represents quintessentially Hong Kong flavours. For Stephanie\, it is dried salted fish\, a humble ingredient found in most Cantonese pantries\, one that she has grown up with and carried with her through her culinary career. Professing it to be “the anchovy of the Canto World”\, she uses salted fish in French-Cantonese cuisine to accentuate dishes with its complex umami flavours. At Off Menu\, the salted fish will star in the sauce for a fried abalone dish. \nTaking the bar scene to new heights\, Hong Kong’s top mixologists will also be shaking up creative cocktails inspired by the flavours and vibrancy of the city. Each mixologist is assigned one base spirit to work with and tasked to spotlight local ingredients in their creation. The line-up of award-winning mixologists include Agung Prabowo of The Old Man\, Sandeep Hathiramani and Gagan Gurung of Tell Camellia\, and Victoria Chow of The Woods Nomadic. Additional beverages will continue to quench the thirst of eventgoers\, with an exclusive presentation by Baijiu Society of their east-meets-west craft offering\, Baijiu Beer\, and by local champions Josh and Caleb Ng of Interval Coffee Bar who will be serving up hand-drip coffee and natural wines. \nTo add to the all-immersive experience\, Off Menu will showcase the best of Hong Kong’s music scene with a line-up of local music legends and indie stars. Spinning great tunes on-stage will be Mukzi & The Island (Hong Kong) and world-class DJ KULU\, one of the most recognised faces in the city’s club scene. \nWhen: Friday–Sunday\, November 15–17\, 2019 \nWhere: The Peak Galleria\, 118 Peak Rd\, The Peak\, Hong Kong \nHow much: HKD $1\,800 per person \nThe single-day ticket will grant diners access to sample 12 distinct dishes\, experience a variety of bespoke alcoholic beverages\, and taste thoughtful canapés \nFor more information\, check their website and for ticketing\, click here
