SUMMARY:Hugo Teixeira: Transience: Daredevils and Towering Webs
DESCRIPTION:Taipa Village Art Space is hosting a new exhibition\, Transience: Daredevils and Towering Webs presented by Luso-American photographic artist Hugo Teixeira.  Hugo showcases his unique collection of documentary photography featuring an iconographic Macau fixture – bamboo scaffolding on construction sites\, which is ubiquitous in the city as it undergoes rapid development. The construction workers (bamboo masters) are acting like spiders\, taking a risky job with courage to wrap the vertiginous towers with bamboo scaffoldings which look like spider webs. \n \nHugo introduces demanding photographic techniques of yesteryear\, exhibiting two types of images: ambrotypes – positive photographs on glass created using a wet-plate process – and cyanotypes – produced using a process that creates a cyan-blue print. To create these stunning images\, Hugo uses heavy view cameras and very carefully applied coatings of paper\, metal and glass\, offering viewers an awe-inspiring journey of discovery back to a 19th-century fascination that long predates the digital era. \nWhen: January 13 – March 31 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua dos Clerigos\, Taipa\, Macau \n+853 2857 6118\, www.taipavillagemacau.com \nOpening hours: 12:00pm – 8:00pm

SUMMARY:Hong Kong Ballet "The Nutcracker"
DESCRIPTION:The new year is up for a fresh start with an all-time adventure for families and dance lovers. Still buzzing with the season’s festive emotions\, Hong Kong Ballet is transporting us to the heart-warming atmosphere of The Nutcracker\, a classical ballet with a snowy magical touch\, filled with the glittering anticipation of unwrapping a gift. \nSet to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s immortal music\, this alluring piece will immerse us into Clara and Fritz’s journey to an astounding\, wonderful world\, ruled by a mischievous army of rats and toy soldiers\, mingling with other magical characters. The plot of this two act ballet sets off when Clara’s godfather offers the little girl a wooden nutcracker. At the stroke of midnight\, toys will come to life to reveal a hidden dreamland. By the end of the day\, will the siblings Clara and Fritz be able to help the Nutcracker topple the cruel Rat King to save his ballerina? Young choreographer Terence Kholer’s reinterpretation of the classic reflects a new visual approach without losing the timeless elegance and charm of the original story. SUMMARY:Packing the Nature – Works by Ng Man Wai
DESCRIPTION:Staying in Germany for creation\, artist Ng Man Wai will return to Macau and hold her solo exhibition “Packing the Nature – Works by Ng Man Wai” in AFA Macau at 6:30pm on March 10 (Friday). This time a big installation will be set in the hall\, the artist will use plastic bags as media\, and fill them with light bulbs for decorating the whole space\, to express the relationship between human and the nature. \nPlastic bags are industrial products\, the use of artificial colors shows a tendency of anti-nature\, which is opposite to the natural colors. For the artist’s creation\, she uses multi-colors as a simile to show the colors are like the constructions that built by humans for their better lives. However\, those constructions must harm and change the environment. \nThrough Ng’s work in this exhibition\, she showed what she saw and felt in the forest\, such as her lament to the extinction of the nature\, the observations about the manmade has replaced the nature and the wishes of packing good things. So the exhibition title is called “Packing the Nature”. \nWhen: March 10 (Opening Day) \nOpen to public: March 11 to 26 \nIt is open daily except for Mondays from 12pm to 7pm. \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nHow much: Free \nFor enquiries\, contact +853 2836 6064 or visit www.afamacau.com. \n

SUMMARY:Abstract Paintings from the MAM Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art is temporarily closed until further notice due to having been affected by Typhoon Hato. \nIn the 1980s\, abstract paintings entered Macao\, playing a prominent role in Macao modern art. Abstract painting has transcended the limitations of painting\, whose initial themes stressed realistic representation. Basic elements of painting were combined partially or entirely in an abstract manner\, creating an abstract form\, influencing the mindset of painting development in Macao. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases nearly 30 works representative of the abstract collection including installations with rich painting qualities. The painting media and techniques used include ink wash\, mixed techniques\, mixed media\, ready-mades\, oil paints\, acrylic paints\, etc. The artists have conducted outstanding experimentation and exploration on the integrated techniques of abstract paintings and mixed materials with successful achievements. The works display strong personal styles through the subjective abstract composition of shapes and colors or independent thinking with symbolic meaning regarding ready-mades. The variety of art forms has fully resembled the laborious navigation of abstract art languages explored by Macao artists since the 1980s\, whose works feature immense open-minded artistic characteristics of the Sino-Western cultural integration in Macao.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: March 12 – September 17\, 2017 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art \n\n How much: Free Admissions\n\nMore information at www.mam.gov.mo

SUMMARY:Art Basel ‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ by Hong Kong artist Kingsley Ng
DESCRIPTION:Kingsley Ng’s ‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ will turn two of Hong Kong’s iconic public trams into moving camera obscuras\, creating an altered reality and allowing passengers to experience Hong Kong in a new way – in reverse. Moving images of Hong Kong’s city life will be accompanied by spoken extracts from Liu Yichang’s popular novella ‘Tête-bêche’. \nThe project is free to the public and will be presented during the show. Art Basel’s Hong Kong show\, whose Lead Partner is UBS\, takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 23 to March 25\, 2017. \nCapturing images of Hong Kong’s passing street life\, the scenes displayed inside the tram will flow alongside texts from Liu Yichang’s famous stream-of-consciousness story. The poetic incantations will blend with street signs and scenery familiar to Hong Kong residents\, inviting the audience to re-experience the city in a completely new way. \nA popular mode of transport since their inauguration in 1904\, trams hold a special place in the heart of Hong Kong citizens and are affectionately known as the city’s ‘ding dings’. They are considered a ubiquitous landmark\, classified as one of the legendary tramways by National Geographic. More than a century after their maiden voyage\, the tram remains a pivotal part of the city’s infrastructure\, continually transporting visitors and residents alike through the heart of the city. \n‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ is commissioned by Art Basel and supported by MGM Resorts Art & Culture. Art Basel is grateful for the support of Osage Art Foundation and Hong Kong Tramways. \nWhen: March 20 – March 28\, 2017 \nWhere: Trams will run daily between Causeway Bay and Western Market\, Sheung Wan. \nHow much: Free admission \nMore information will be available soon at www.artbasel.com

SUMMARY:Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie
DESCRIPTION:Macau artist Cai Guo Jie will have his solo exhibition “Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie” in AFA Macau at 6:30pm on April 3. It has been three years since his last solo exhibition in AFA Beijing. This time Cai will have his latest watercolor series\, showing the Macau sceneries in a perspective of looking down. \nCai’s exhibition ‘Overlook the Macau City’ displays a total of 14 landscape paintings of Macao scenery – Mong Ha Hill\, the Inner Harbour\, Ruins of St. Paul’s\, St. Lawrence’s Church\, Coloane Alto among others and even a panorama of the Macao Peninsula – all are familiar to the eyes of both locals and visitors. These paintings are different from his previous creations: in most of them the horizon is elevated to a considerably high level\, and it even disappears completely in some of them\, as in the painting named ‘Camões Looking East’. The viewer seems to have been lifted up in the air and placed at a high vantage point overlooking the subject. In addition\, it is worth noting that the dimension of the paintings has been enlarged to a full sheet\, the maximum size for watercolor paintings. The same as usual\, the painter’s aggressive autography hovers at the top of each and every painting\, as if sitting atop\, looking down and describing the ever-changing cityscapes\, where the painter has indulged himself in unharnessed imagination. \n \n“Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie” is partly sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Macao SAR Government. Media partners include Hoje Macau and Ponto Final. \nWhen: April 4 to 23 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário
DESCRIPTION:Young artist Célia Rosário opens her solo exhibition “Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário” in AFA Macau at 6:30 pm on April 21. As a new member of AFA\, Celia marks her second solo exhibition in Macau. With 14 acrylic works that will be showcased\, the artist creates strong primitivism in the totem images on monumental poles and the detached\, deformed presentations as subjects of her work by using striking color contrasts. These are all about primitivism. \nAgainst a sharp\, vermilion background in ‘Untitled 6’ are poles standing in a circle with men sitting on top in grassland\, conjuring up the image of a clan performing a sacrificial rite. As the major part of the work\, the totem image looks dark and mysterious in the vivid\, orange-red backdrop\, with its centre resembling a black hole especially with the radiating red colour\, ready to draw in its viewers. It is the very representation of strong totem worship. \n \n“Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário” is partly sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Macao SAR Government. \nWhen: April 21 – May 7 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nHow much: Free Admissions \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Guns and Flowers－Experimental Theatre Work
DESCRIPTION:This theater work depicts the situation of women in wartime and postwar times\, concerning the issues of War and Gender. It is not the dichotomy on women and men; however\, performers are both men and women on stage to show the humanity through their multiple roles\, especially the quality of female soldiers. Regardless of the past and present\, the people in wartime are treated as “consumable”. After the war\, women are even classified as “defective” and hardly could successfully integrate into family and society. Even if women are not in prison\, their physical and mental states are still “imprisoned” in dark corners of somewhere. \nThis experimental theater work is interdisciplinary with drama\, music and movements; in particular\, weaving handcraft delivers another layer of concept “Strings of Longing in Hands” into the play\, which inspired from the lack of resources during or after wars. People have to maintain their life by hard labor work or creating things from few materials left around. For women\, handicraft is no longer an interest or a hobby after wars; they must live on with this technique. Through which\, women could perhaps deliver happiness when giving to someone else\, or obtain some profit when selling to people. The least but the most important is that they could receive personal healing and enjoyment in the process of making. \nWhen: April 21 – 22\, 2017 \n8:00 to 9:00pm \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, No Cruzamento da Avenidado Coronel Mesquitacoma Avenida Almirante Lacerda Macau \nHow much: MOP $100 and Mop $80 for Students\, Senior Citizens and Disabled Person \nFor more information\, contact +852 853 0026 or email: oxwarehouse@gmail.commacau art \nVisit www.oxwarehouse.blogspot.com
