Macau Band Directors Association keeps on carrying out its idea of hosting Macau Band Fair throughout these 20 years – “build on the traditional art of wind music and open up the future of the Chinese culture with the western music!” This year\, with the participation of various wonderful international music groups and teams\, amazing performances enhance the quality of Macau Band Fair. \nMacau Band Directors Association has been popularizing the local art education since its foundation. At the same time\, it also takes the responsibility on developing artistic environment for the local artists. Featuring more than 20 concerts and master classes every year\, Macau Band Directors Association offers numerous opportunities for the local musicians to perform on stage and also provides a linkage for the youth to study music. \nThe theme of this year’s Macau Band Fair 2019 is “Build on Past Achievements and Open up the Future by popularizing the art of wind music”. In terms of programming this year\, music groups and soloists are invited from different countries\, including France\, the Netherlands\, Spain\, Italy\, Australia\, Belgium\, Japan\, Korea\, Singapore\, Taiwan and Hong Kong\, etc. performing at the Macau Cultural Centre\, The Dom Pedro V Theatre and Chapel of Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima English Secondary School. DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Valkyrie\, by Hélio Cunha) \nOrganized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, the exhibition “Lyric Poetry – Works of Artists in Macao and Portugal from the MAM Collection”\, is open since July 13\, at the Special Exhibitions Gallery\, 3rd floor of the Macao Museum of Art. The exhibition showcases over 90 outstanding works from the MAM collection\, from oils\, acrylics\, and watercolor paintings\, to mixed-media paintings\, sculptures and installations that fully reflect the creative outcomes of contemporary artists\, as well as rich Chinese and Portuguese cultural connotations. The exhibition is open to the general public. \nThe exhibition features works by 60 artists\, including local Chinese and Macanese artists\, as well as Portuguese artists who have settled or exhibited in Macau\, presenting works by Júlio Pomar\, Vieira da Silva\, Bartolomeu dos Santos\, Luís Demée\, Carlos Marreiros\, Mio Pang Fei\, Kwok Woon\, Manuel Cargaleiro\, José de Guimarães and other masters. The six themes of the exhibition\, “View Perspective”\, “Colour of Macao”\, “Dialogues of Materials”\, “Abstract Soul”\, “Masters’ Ripples” and “On the Journey”\, showcase the results of exchange between Macau and Portuguese artists over the past 30 years\, involving the audience in a poetic journey of exchange. \nUnderwater City (1985)\, by Luís Demée \nSince the 1980s\, with the rapid development of Macau’s economy\, many Portuguese artists\, local Chinese and Macanese artists explored their creative inspiration under the environment rich in Chinese and Portuguese cultures\, constantly bringing new thoughts and driving force\, and forming one of the important cultural symbols of Macau. DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Eagle\, 2017\, Colour on paper with frame) \nThe Macao Museum of Art presents Bathing in the Spring Breeze – Paintings by Liu Mengkuan\, an art exhibition open to public until August 25\, 2019. The Lingnan School of painting\, led by master artists Gao Jianfu\, Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren\, has experienced different aesthetic developments in Guangdong\, Hong Kong and Macau since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In the 1960s and 1970s\, aspiring artists in Guangzhou absorbed the stylistic vocabularies of Realism from art academies on top of the revolutionary spirit they had inherited from the Lingnan School of painting. With this they formed a painting style that both reflected the times and breathed vigorous life into their work. \nIn Hong Kong and Macau\, artists continued to ‘integrate Chinese and Western techniques’ to help Chinese art catch up with the times. At that time\, master artist Deng Fen\, an advocate of preserving Chinese painting characteristics and a key founder of the Guihai Painting Cooperative (later Guangdong Chinese Painting Research Society)\, opposed random Chinese and Western integration. Another master named Yang Shanshen\, who at a young age studied under Gao Jianfu and later in life befriended Deng Fen\, spent much time contemplating the state of modern Chinese painting. At the end of the 1970s\, Yang began to establish a style and aesthetics in which ‘richness is seen in dry\, withered ink strokes’ that would later influence Liu Mengkuan\, who studied under Yang in 1977. \nBorn in Hong Kong in 1950\, Liu Mengkuan is a founding member of ‘Xiang Gang Mei Xie’ (Hong Kong Art Association)\, and president of the Mu Feng Art Club. He graduated from the Wah Yan College\, Kowloon\, and in 1977 began studying under Yang Shanshen\, a second-generation master of the Lingnan School. In 1983\, Liu decided to be a full-time painter\, becoming an active member of the third generation of the Lingnan School. In 1986\, he hosted his first solo exhibition at the American Library in Hong Kong\, followed by a second solo at the Museum Luís de Camões in Macau in 1987. Over the years\, he has exhibited around the world\, including in Hong Kong\, Macau\, Taiwan\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, and Martinique in Central America\, as well as at galleries in Tokyo\, Yokohama\, Fujisawa and Nara\, in Japan. Since 2000\, he has held solo exhibitions in several cities in Mainland China\, including Jiangmen and Zhongshan in Guangdong and Wuzhou in Guangxi. DESCRIPTION:Continuing the momentum of Art Macao\, Melco presents “Journey”\, a diverse selection of works inspired by the highly varied culture of anime. Forming part of Melco’s contribution to Art Macao: International Art Exhibition\, this unique exhibition is a visual adventure that explores the evolution of contemporary Japanese anime from its beginnings rooted in ukiyo-e\, the traditional art of Japanese woodblock print and painting. \nThe visual references of anime abound in Japan and beyond are seen as a visual signature of the nation.  Both the contemporary genres of anime and manga can trace their roots and influences in the woodblock art form of ukiyo-e and its Edo period heroes. Today\, its influences can be readily identified in such varying media as computer games\, toy culture\, and the work of multimedia artists around the world. This first-of-a-kind exhibition for Studio City Macau includes such highlights as Amanami Animated by MAP Office\, Mr Waterloo by Rainbo\, Waves in Time by Southbend\, Blingee by Han Yanjuan\, and the “Modern Art of Floating World” collection by Horihiro Mitomo and Ukiyoemon. \nAmanami Animated \nAmanami Animated is a contemporary animated drawing from the roots of the Edo period in Japan\, from ukiyo-e\, and from the Japanese contemporary expression of the history\, culture and traditions of the ama-san free divers who work in the Bay of Ise in Japan. This animation revisits and reimagines the patterns of the genre ukiyo-e\, not as a technique\, but as a fictional ethnographic representation of the coastal landscape during the Edo period. \nThe story is divided into eight scenes\, framed by a screen and defined by three main tableaux–water (blue)\, land (green)\, and home (yellow). The eight panels depict scenes derived from specific sets of narratives\, which are combined with a collection of myths\, beliefs and dreams that were collected by the artists during many trips to Japan. In this contemporary interpretation of the ukiyo-e\, the numerous drawing layers made by a computer replaces the traditional wood block and colored print processes. \nIn addition to “Journey”\, the installation of vibrant activations and cartoon characters designed by Hiroshi Yoshii has transformed Studio City Macau’s main lobby into an exciting world of Japanese anime. DESCRIPTION:Life is filled with colors. At different stages in our life\, we have different preferences for colors. It is especially appropriate to use infinite colors to describe the complexity and ever-changing emotions of life. According to Io Weng Si’s description\, the “blue” color represents her feelings of depression and dimness in the face of adversity. The “blue” color is not an expression confined on the surface level\, but it also describes the state when the emotion goes to the dark abyss\, after reflection and remorse\, there is a faint light at the bottom\, and the deep “blue” is slowly illuminated by a gleam\, which is the color of warmth\, forgiveness and deep reflection. \nIo Weng Si has borrowed the poem “Recipe for Making the Color Blue” of the Portuguese poet Nuno Júdice as a blueprint. Looking for the concept of “blue” formula\, she uses natural materials such as rice pulp and rice paper\, taking the land of Macau as the outline\, reorganizing it\, creating and sketching these semi-abstract mood- oriented maps with emotions. In this process of creation\, she said\, that water\, temperature and sunshine are especially important\, as if the earth has grown rice to nourish the people. \nThe pulp is made of rice\, its color is white\, with a bit of turbidity\, but is still not in a pure white state. It is a stage in her pursuit of spiritual purification. And rice paper is like the human heart and the body’s cell membrane\, although fragile and transparent\, it protects the core of life (nuclei). Additionally\, Chef Mydin behind Nasi Kandar’s secret curry is full of colorful mutton\, chicken\, fish and vegetables and is the perfect accompaniment to his delicious roti canai. Chew Soon Hock is a celebrated Peranakan pastry chef hailing from Melaka\, and he has been invited abroad many times over the last 20 years to promote famous traditional Peranakan Nyonya cakes. These can be either savory or sweet and are mostly made of rice\, milk and glutinous rice\, fresh coconut milk\, with bright colors dyed by natural plants such as pandan leaves\, butterfly pea flower\, coconut sugar and coconut milk. \nFinally\, representing the southernmost state of Johor\, culinary teacher and columnist Chef Jazz Chee is a third-generation chef with his signature Johor laksa. This is a must-try dish with a richer than usual laksa broth made with a stir-fried paste of shallots\, garlic\, dried chilli\, citronella\, dried wax fruit\, yellow ginger\, dried chilli\, excellent dried shrimp\, ground and stir-fried and topped with tofu puff\, fresh fish ball\, sliced fish cake\, fried bean skin and fresh clams. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition’s aim is to examine the Pearl River Delta’s meteoric progress of urbanization and its cultural phenomena developed in a considerable dualism. In this prospect\, the occurring “Pearl River Delta Arts Retrospective” is introduced as a triennial to feature in-depth reviews of the region; by scrutinizing each organization working in this conurbation\, in the varied forms of creative communities\, collectives and institutions. \nWith these concerning entities\, in their previous collaborative projects\, they have since established a strong connection in hope to stimulate the unorthodox ecology and practices in the arts. In 2016\, they presented nine practitioner groups distinctive to the PRD\, looking at how such formations have shaped the cultural landscape in the region and its relevance for today’s socio-political context. \nThree years have passed\, the second edition of the “PRD Arts Retrospective” has proposed “How Flows” as a working title\, and appointed nine artist groups to exhibit their trajectory of integration as a community-oriented model in the Pearl River Delta. The concept draws on colonial preoccupations with the plume of “smoke” as sources of likely contagion in the effect of temperature and moisture\, the burning “smoke” rising from opium destruction at Humen\, and the noxious veil of “smog” enveloping the complexity of our urban-rural divide; such environmental commonality functions as powerful means to communicate messages on localism as an urban phenomena. DESCRIPTION:From 1999 to 2019\, Macau has undergone earth-shaking transformations. As a non-governmental art experimentation platform\, at a time when the long-awaited LRT (Light Rail Transit) service is about to start\, we hope to explore the gap between the “platform” and the “moon” through seeking theater perspectives and imaginations in contemporary art. The gap is between the rational and the romantic\, the ideal and the reality\, society and the self. BOK festival 2019 aims to bring theatre closer to people by showcasing a series of performances\, including Falling from the Land\, Time and Toys\, Streaming Steam\, Orig.ami\, Artificial Loneliness\, Between the Winds\, among others. \nThe city is under development and people are moving\, heading every day to an impossible destination. If we get lost on the way\, that is more than reasonable. There will be a series of explorations about identity. The ‘BOK Movement’ features seven groups of creative types from different fields who have left their native land to ‘roam’ in different cities.  With a string of experimental theatres\, they will take you on a flight between the platform and the moon\, in an attempt to search for definition/re-definition. \nLaunched in 2013\, the BOK Festival is a performing arts platform co-launched by several non-governmental associations. DESCRIPTION:With children off school for the summer\, the Macao Cultural Centre keeps them busy with the ARTmusing Summer 2019 programme. One of the highlights for this month is the return of multi-award-winning Spanish company Aracaladanza\, this time presenting “Flights”. The contemporary dance show\, inspired by the legacy of Leonardo da Vinci\, seeks to spark the imagination of young children aged five and above as well as their families.
