SUMMARY:31st Macao Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival (MAF) dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theater\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. A mix of local\, regional and international performers from various regions and countries around the world present a diversity of programs. This year’s MAF will focus on productions from Mainland China and Macau\, presenting nearly 100 events including outreach activities in various districts\, establishing a display and exchange platform\, expanding the artistic vision and enhancing the aesthetic perception of its audience. \nThe grand opening White Snake by Lin Zhaohua Theatre Studio from Beijing\, redesigns the characters of the classic folktale The Legend of the White Snake in an artistic and creative way\, combing theatre\, music\, dance and multimedia art. The closing performance Taking Leave is a production adapted from American contemporary playwright Nagle Jackson’s namesake play by the National Theatre of China. In this play\, the National First Class Director Wang Xiaoying will lead a cast of veteran actors to interpret the story of an acclaimed actor who used to play the role of King Lear\, who was approaching the end of his life\, wandering between reality and imagination\, allowing the audience to witness the fragility and eternity of life. \nThe Jin Xing Dance Theatre from Shanghai\, one of the top modern dance companies in China\, acclaimed by critics as “an important unit in the history of Chinese dance”\, presents two works\, namely Wild Flower and Trinity. In Wild Flower\, the dancers interpret a wild flower’s tenacious existence through marathon-esque non-stop dancing and movement\, liberating themselves from the bonds of body and mind. The show Trinity\, a performance of works by three renowned choreographers\, namely Jin Xing\, Emanuel Gat and Arthur Kuggeleyn\, explores women’s independent existence and physiological space within each’s distinctive movements\, and illustrates the courage and strength among people through dancers’ bodies\, inspiring artistic appeal and avant-garde ideas. \nThe Coloane game \nHuangmei Opera is a national intangible cultural heritage. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. The play was created in the 1990s with Yu Qiuyu and Chen Xiting as the core creative team\, starring Ma Lan\, among other artists\, who innovated the classics together from a new perspective. The play instantly gained much reputation\, and thus became a reserved play in the theatre. On the MAF stage\, the play will be performed by the new generation of Huangmei opera actors\, passing on tradition and innovation. \nThe Macao Arts Festival establishes a display and exchange platform that has witnessed the professional development of local art groups\, which illustrates Macau’s cultural diversity from different perspectives. The dance theatre Drunken Dragon Dance by Four Dimension Spatial innovates the festive tradition with contemporary dance elements; the documentary theatre See You through Memories by Soda-City Experimental Workshop Arts Association\, explores the past and present landscapes of Patane\, reviewing the transformation of the city; Dance Duo recounts the transformation of the local dancer Kam Hiu Lam in a decade\, presenting her dance dialogue with choreographer Chou Shu-Yi and her joint creation with Wang Yuanqing; The Never-ending Task of Lust for Failure by Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association creates a worldview map beyond languages\, labels and disabilities of the special-needs; Property Guide at Lou Kau Mansion by Jay Lei and Shuk Man Lee and A Short Time Escape by Lei Sam I\, which were premiered at the Macao City Fringe Festival and were recommended by the artistic advisors of the Macao City Fringe Festival\, will be staged at the Macao Arts Festival again. \nMAF also encourages parents and children to enjoy artistic experiences. On the Other Side of Macao – A magical adventure by Bernardo Amorim\, a plastic arts and multimedia artist based in Macao\, brings the magic of narrative to life with the use of puppets and video mapping; The Coloane Game by Dream Theater Association offers guided tours visiting streets and alleys of Coloane\, experiencing the residents’ spirit of mutual help and the prosperity and decline of the shipbuilding industry; the artistic and cultural performances Performing Arts Gala at the Iao Hon Market Park for three consecutive nights\, inject vitality in the community through the arts. The Children’s Story World and art exploration activities will also be available this year\, and all are welcome to enjoy the world of art. \nDrunken dragon dance \nInjecting artistic vitality into traditional culture\, students from the Cantonese Opera Course at the School of Theatre of the Macao Conservatory step on the stage to present the Cantonese Opera Jiufeng Mountain; the Patuá theatre comments on all crucial issues of the city\, including current affairs\, humanism\, and dialect. This year\, the Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group presents a hilarious production Boss for a Day\, keeping the full house of the audience in stitches. The Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra present the classics of Mozart and a musical feast that combine traditional Chinese culture and modern aesthetics concepts\, respectively\, carrying out a musical dialogue between the East and the West. \nRen Dongsheng\, a National First Class Stage Designer\, is dedicated to exploring stage design. He produced a collection of poetic\, vibrant\, and epochal works by repeatedly reviewing style\, color\, and techniques. The “Imagery and Space: Ren Dongsheng Scenography Exhibition” leads the audience to transcend spatial dimensions and experience the charm of scenography. Baptiste Rabichon\, an emerging contemporary French photographic artist\, will present “A Room with a View: Baptiste Rabichon Photography Exhibition”\, whose works with a technique that combines traditional and innovative elements\, introducing the contemporary expressions of photography and exploring the possibilities of artistic creation. \nWhen: April 30–May 29\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau\, Old Court Building\, 459 Av. da Praia Grande\, Macau\, Macau Contemporary Art Center\, Rua de S. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program – Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself
DESCRIPTION:“Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself” is an experiment of media expansion undertaken by artist Wang Yan Xin from Lanzhou\, who utilizes performance art as the major medium that is complemented by videography\, installations\, photography\, painting\, and other means. This experiment of cross-media artistic creation initiates the discussions for oneself starting from an artist-in-residence project in Macau and explores the possibilities of artistic creation through a game-based approach. \nIncorporating Macau as space and the artist-in-residence project\, Wang Yan Xin creates this series based on self-observation and awareness of the weakness\, vulnerability\, and pretense of oneself. There are questions over what makes one look tough in appearance\, what makes one feel fear\, and what makes one feel powerless\, leading to critical thinking of oneself. Friedrich Nietzsche says\, “There are no facts\, only interpretations.” Different events only represent different interpretations. As “emotions are more influential than facts”\, lies can be interpreted as “another point of view” or “an opinion” because “everything is relative” and “everyone has their own truth”. Thus\, this project is also an experiment of the reconstruction of “truth” by oneself. \nWhen: May 1–30\, 2021 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Macau Sessions: Dialogues on Architecture and Society / Site-specific sound installation at Impromptu Storefront
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Book installation © image courtesy of Impromptu Projects \nMacau Sessions: Dialogues on Architecture and Society original content explores the recent development of Macau\, its territory\, and neighboring regions\, by linking themes such as architecture\, city\, border\, memory\, representation\, and history. It contains interviews with Hendrik Tieben\, Thomas Daniell\, Mário Duque\, Wang Weijen\, Diogo Burnay\, Jianfei Zhu\, Jorge Figueira\, Werner Breitung and Pedro Campos Costa. Later\, a visual essay developed by Nuno Cera was added offering an artistic perspective on the impact of urban growth on people and the territory. Both books (English and Portuguese editions) will be on sale during the opening at Impromptu Storefront. \nThis project consists of creating an installation based on the book-object (published books) and the word-sound (recorded interviews) which\, in an experimental confluence\, cease to be the object of the original study\, to become the artistic object itself. Sound design and sound installation designed by Rui Farinha. \nHow to display a book which is an object conceived to be read? How to dematerialize its shape and content? Can a book become an art piece? Through which process would a book become art? Here the book becomes pure volume and shape\, while the interviews become a multitude of sounds from which you may be able to produce new significances. Is this still a book? Or is it a book in the process of becoming something else? \nOpening of a new cultural space\, a non-profit concept gallery\, open 24 hours\, seven days a week\, based on an innovative exhibition model to showcase commissioned interventions by invited foreign artists. The aim is to provoke and stimulate public awareness\, addressing local and global issues\, as well as personal and universal values. It is intended to encourage and contribute to the discourse of critical thinking by hosting screenings\, roundtables\, and book presentations. \nWhen: May 26–July 15\, 2021 \nWhere: Impromptu Storefront\, 14–A Travessa Inácio Baptista\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, send an email info@impromptuprojects.com\, call +853 6653 2547 or +853 6251 4580 and check their website \nSound installation © image courtesy of Impromptu Projects

SUMMARY:Love Boat: The Divine Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:As a Cultural Association dedicated to the performing arts\, visual arts\, and new technologies\, 10 Marias is pleased to invite the public to embark on a special journey in the Love Boat\, a presentation that recreates the ambiance of Sunday Show\, a collective performance set in a cabaret environment. \nThree years ago\, in 2018\, to celebrate its 20 years\, the creators of this revivalist show presented\, first in Lisbon and then in Macau\, a special edition of the Sunday Show\, a shared experience between artists\, the public\, and 10 Marias. The unexpected success of the event and the public’s encouragement was crucial for the association to think about a new project to present this year. This time the stage\, where several performing arts come together\, is over the river and has the city as the backdrop. \nThe show follows the concept started in 2002\, in Bairro Alto\, Lisbon\, where several talents imagined scenes and carried them out. At that time\, the stage was commanded by legendary masters of ceremony Madunna and La Monique\, who weren’t merely announcing other artists\, but printing their own rhythm and making magic in an enchanted world of fantasy\, sparkles\, and art. Burlesque\, satire or simply absurdity were dissected by artists and the public. Love Boat will be no different but it will make a difference. \nThe Love Boat will be held on the Blue WhaleBoat\, boarding time will be from 9:00pm until 9:50pm at Pier 14 (Behind the Masters Hotel). Departs from Inner Harbor passing through the Macau Tower and the banks in front of Grand Lisboa\, MGM\, Wynn\, Macau Science Museum towards the new Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge. \nWhen: Saturday\, 9:00pm\, June 5\, 2021 (the journey lasts about three hours) \nWhere: Ponte Cais 14\, Rua Das Lorchas\, Edf. Yuet Tung\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $250 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 6299 8404 or check here

SUMMARY:Interactive Installation “What Are We Waiting for” in Albergue SCM
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Graduates and Students and supported by Albergue SCM and Macau Heritage Ambassadors Association\, What Are We Waiting For installation is an exhibition at Albergue SCM from June 18 to June 23\, 2021. Through What Are We Waiting For is an interactive installation which appears to be a washing machine\, participants can experience a “washing procedure” about time with people from Hong Kong and Japan through video clip and online communication software. By looking into the installation\, they have the right to peep\, or the right to look directly\, experiencing the past and the present. \nIn this project\, the washing machines are divorced from such original and ordinary context and value and re-presented with a new purpose. Those who look into the “washing machines” would not be waiting for their washings to be done. Instead\, they would face part of the creators’ current situations of a “new normal” during Covid-19 through music and kaleidoscopic images manipulated by mirrors and video work. In the machine\, the waiting time of the washing machines is replaced by the contemplation time for the audience\, and expectation and anxiety in them and self-reflection through a new “washing machines” may gradually become more noticeable. \nThe installation is created by Kenneth\, Cheong Wai Kit (installation curator)\, Zoe\, Wong Yan Tung\, Frances\, Leong Yuen Tung\, Yoyo\, Yau Yau Yin\, Angel\, Chiu Oi Ying\, Clara\, HO Sze Wing\, Ayami Oki-Siekierczak with special thanks to Sogo Akiyoshi. \nWhen: June 18–June 26\, 2021 \nWhere: Albergue SCM\, 8 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2550 (or +853 2852 3205\, +853 6610 8873)\, and register here
