SUMMARY:Non Character Non View – Works by Leo Fan
DESCRIPTION:Titled “Non Character Non View”\, the exhibition focuses on writing and photography as main art media. Combined with the Buddhist philosophical thought of “If all forms are seen not as forms”\, the title aims to look at how “characters” and “views” can become bridges to transcend the self in the hands of the artist. \nBorn in the 1970s\, Leo Fan loves and practiced calligraphy since the third grade of elementary school\, and he had a strong passion and pursuit of copying calligraphy books. When he arrived at middle school\, he performed very well in art subjects\, apart from calligraphy and painting\, he practiced dancing and sports as well. \nIn college\, Leo Fan was enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in film and television arts at Beijing Normal University. After returning to Macau\, he has been engaged in middle school calligraphy and visual arts education. \nThe only previous solo exhibition he had was Our Belle Epoque held in Ox Warehouse in 2017. After the 2017 painting exhibition\, Fan’s daily practices are more about writing and photographing. \nWhen: July 3–17\, 2021 \nWhere: Portuguese Bookshop\, 16 R. de São Domingos\, Macau \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Film still from “Radiograph of a Family” \nThe 5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF) takes place from July 9 to 25 and features a series of fantastic films to watch alone\, with your date\, family members and even friends. With screens at both Casa Garden and Cinema Alegria\, it discusses several themes across different generations\, focusing on vintage\, classics\, and new releases. If you’re interested in cinema and film\, then this is the ideal thing to do this summer. \nAs the first and only film festival dedicated to documentary film in Macao\, MOIDF hopes to build the bridge and connection between the documentary and Macau’s audience. \nAccording to the curating team\, “we have never been so dependent on videography to connect with the world. But could we simply connect with and understand the real world through videography? We have been forced to have a lot of “me time” by the pandemic. How could we stay at home on our own and reconcile with ourselves? Each film selected in this edition of the MOIDF\, perhaps\, tries to answer these questions. \nThis festival features films such as The Tree Remembers\, The Witches of the Orient\, Taivalu + A Study of Fly\, Minamata Mandala (Part I) and many more. \nThe pandemic fluctuations continue to persist in different countries\, alongside the wars and turmoils in various regions in the past two years\, the world seems to “get dark by the time”*. For cinema\, when it gets dark it means a new start — the start of a film. When the darkness is over\, the lights are back. From the world of cinema to the real world\, you might realize the world has changed a bit. Perhaps\, it is due to the fact that while directors present the cruel reality in the films they also offer covertly a glimpse of hope. Like a quote from The Metamorphosis of Birds\, one of the films in this edition of MOIDF\, “Every day the earth’s orbit changes\, as if it were telling us that we must change too.” We hope that the 5th MODIF\, after being suspended for a year\, could accompany everyone through films\, and envision the pandemic world from a new perspective.  \nWhen: July 9–25\, 2021 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Casa Garden\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 (normal ticket)\, MOP $30 (discount ticket) per person \nFor more information\, check their official website or send them an email to info@moidf.com. SUMMARY:Project Sands X: Beyond the Blue – An Exhibition of Ceramic Extraordinaire
DESCRIPTION:In support of Art Macao\, Sands China Ltd. is presenting Project Sands X: Beyond the Blue – An Exhibition of Ceramic Extraordinaire\, one of the special exhibitions of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021. The exhibition kicks off with an opening ceremony in July. It was curated by internationally famed artist Caroline Cheng\, and features works from more than 20 world-renowned ceramic artists and institutions\, showcasing both traditional and innovative creations. \nThe exhibition’s theme\, Beyond the Blue\, is layered in meaning. The works feature designs and palettes that are diverse\, showcasing how the beauty of ceramics can go beyond the traditional colors of blue and white. Using innovative designs\, techniques\, and technologies\, artists hope to bring positivity to the world through works that go beyond all expectations and imagination. The eye-catching exhibition seeks to elicit joy and inspire visitors to go beyond the blue mood of a pandemic world with optimism for a brighter future ahead. \nFeatured artists include Estonian-American artist Sergei Isupov\, who is internationally known for his surreal\, highly detailed and narrative works; American artist Richard Notkin\, who is well-known for his series of Chinese Yixing-inspired teapots and ceramic artworks; and American artist David Furman\, who draws inspiration from everyday life and is known for his hyper-realistic works. The exhibition also aims to reshape the audience’s perception of ceramic art production and enjoyment by presenting the innovative works of a new generation of artists. Among them are Adam Chau\, Brooks Oliver\, and Nicholas Lenker\, who have been recognized in the United States as “Emerging Artists” by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). \nThe exhibition’s works combine technology and ceramics with the innovative presentation\, and visitors are able to interact with some of the pieces. Exhibits made from recycled ceramics promoting sustainability in the art will also be on display with a vision to create a better world. And visitors can use their smartphones to listen to a complimentary audio guide to learn about the artists and their works while viewing the exhibits. \nMacau and ceramics share a centuries-long history\, with Macau as a key port for porcelain export on the Maritime Silk Road. This powerful tie was why Sands China chose a gold-themed ceramics exhibition for Art Macao 2019\, titled All That’s Gold Does Glitter – An Exhibition of Glamorous Ceramics. \nFollowing up on that extremely well-received offering\, Sands China is unveiling an even greater variety of ceramic masterworks with this revelatory exhibition. These exciting new works created on a new theme will once again surprise viewers and expand their appreciation of this multi-faceted art form. \nWhen: July 15–October 31\, 2021 \nWhere: The Venetian Macao\, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check their official website

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the sea and highlighting the urgent need to protect it for future generations\, Melco Resorts & Entertainment will be unveiling the groundbreaking multimedia exhibition 海洋La Mer Art Exhibition July and October\, 2021 at City of Dreams. \nAs the Special Exhibition of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021\, 海洋La Mer Art Exhibition draws together a collection of leading artists and explorers to pay tribute to the beauty\, sensuality\, inspiration and fragility of the sea and its inhabitants through a series of innovative installations. \nFeaturing specially commissioned works by pioneering video artist Ange Leccia\, renowned composer Thomas Roussel\, botanical sculptor Makoto Azuma\, and visionary artistic director Franco Dragone\, the exhibition takes place at one of Macau’s most iconic venues\, the Dancing Water Theater at City of Dreams. Each of the pieces in the exhibition has been created to complement the others\, creating a harmonious experience for visitors. This global collaboration of renowned talents also highlights what can be achieved through purposeful cooperation by people from different parts of the world\, something that is necessary if humans are to protect the oceans effectively. \nLa Mer by Ange Leccia is a video work in which the artist records the endless movement of the waves as they emerge and then crash onto the beach. Through Leccia’s unusual perspective\, viewers are invited to contemplate the rhythm\, colors and relentlessly shifting shapes of the sea\, demonstrating why it has been a source of inspiration for artists since the beginning of time. \nAnge Leccia’s La Mer \nW/AV/E by Thomas Roussel sees the acclaimed French composer using music and artificial intelligence to immerse the audience in a constantly changing audiovisual seascape. To make this cutting-edge work\, Roussel wrote and recorded the score with an orchestra in Paris. The musical segments are activated and transformed by real-time oceanographic data collected in the Pacific Ocean to create an ever-evolving symphony. A collective of artists crafted the visual illustrations from digital recordings of around 35\,000 marine species. \nSephirothic Flower by Makoto Azuma chronicles the avant-garde Japanese flower artist’s journey to the depths of the ocean. Having previously sent flowers into the Arctic and into space\, this installation follows the artist as he joins an underwater research team to take a bouquet of flowers 1\,000 meters down to the bottom of Japan’s Suruga Bay. In Oceans by Franco Dragone\, the legendary artistic director uses the staging and machinery of the Dancing Water Theater to create a dramatic spectacle that combines baroque performance with modern technology. Addressing the issue of marine pollution\, this poignant work draws attention to the destruction of the ocean environment and shows how its beauty hides a manmade monstrosity. \nThe House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries \nIn addition to the exhibition\, City of Dreams is also hosting a series of activities and events that give visitors the opportunity to deepen their appreciation of the sea and make a meaningful contribution towards protecting it. Taking place every Saturday night at 7:30pm\, the La Mer Film Festival turns the spotlight on a selection of the greatest movies inspired by the sea\, from arthouse films and documentaries to big-budget blockbusters\, such as The Big Blue\, Finding Nemo\, and Life of Pi. The screenings will incorporate some of the Dancing Water Theater’s signature aquatic effects\, creating an unprecedented one-of-a-kind viewing experience for the audience. \nThe House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries\, meanwhile\, gives guests the opportunity to see Macau’s most famous artistic extravaganza from the perspective of the show’s divers\, revealing the secret design of the underwater stage and the skills required to control its submerged mechanisms. Visitors can also connect with the oceans spiritually at the Flow Body Mindfulness classes. Led by the Head of Performer Wellness from The House of Dancing Water and featuring music composed by Thomas Roussel that is inspired by the sounds of the sea\, this guided session allows participants to clear their minds\, stay positive and progress towards a state of wellness. \nFlow Body Mindfulness classes \nIn “Sea x Art” Forum\, freediver Wang Aolin\, the first person from China to descend to a subaquatic depth of 100m\, and underwater photographer Uncle J\, share their unique experiences below the waves\, and how they relate to the fields of art and sustainability. \nMelco has committed to reaching zero emissions and zero waste by 2030. Part of this program is the company’s fight against single-use plastics. Guests in search of a distinctive reminder of the exhibition can head to the Dancing Water Boutique\, where Parley for the Oceans bags will be on sale. Created in collaboration with artists Ed Ruscha\, Pipilotti Rist\, Katharina Grosse\, Doug Aitken\, Tobias Rehberger\, and Bharti Kher\, each bag is made from approximately five intercepted plastic bottles and funds the removal of more marine plastic waste by the Parley Global Cleanup Network. Online donations to Parley for the Oceans\, a global charity organizing ocean clean-ups around the world\, are also encouraged. \nWhen: July 16–October 31\, 2021 \n“Sea x Art” Forum – 4:00pm–5:00pm\, Sunday\, August 8\, 2021 \nFlow Body Mindfulness classes – Saturdays\, 4:00pm–5:00pm \nWhere: City of Dreams\, Estrada do Istmo\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \n*Online registration is preferred for the “La Mer” Film Festival\, The House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries\, Flow Body Mindfulness classes and “Sea x Art” Forum\, limited seats will also be available on-site on a first-come-first-serve basis \nFor more information\, call +853 8868 6767 or check the event’s official page

SUMMARY:Art Power Jamming: Rejuvenation “Live for Death – Works by Tracy Wong”
DESCRIPTION:Ark-Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents Art Power Jamming – Rejuvenation “Live for Death – Works by Tracy Wong”. The exhibition is sponsored by Macao Foundation\, organized by Ark-Association of Macau Art and Cclovethink\, supported by Café Voyage and Graceart Design Studio. \n“What is the meaning of existence that we have been searching for throughout our lives? How did it appear? If life has a time limit\, will the meaning of survival be different? In the busy working life\, people seem to forget the meaning of their existence\, leading the same lifestyle at the same time at the same stage. We all hope that we can bring good things to the world during our survival\, and we need the experience to grow up during the evolution from infant to old age”\, the curator said. \nLive for Death is appealing for Martin Heidegger. “People should live in the world like a dying passer-by and cherish it instead of manipulating the earth. There are many choices to live\, and perhaps a choice has changed the trajectory of life”. Live for Death reflects Heidegger’s evaluation of this society\, “As long as a person is still alive\, he will live towards the direction of death. The life of this being runs through the entire process of death\, which is a form of existence that precedes death. In this process of dying\, people can truly feel the strong sense of self-existence\, and they are present ahead of death.”  \nTracy is currently the president of Oh My Hand Macau\, project supervisor of Binshu Studio\, illustrator of  Thirty-seven Degrees\, as well as the founder of Cclovethink. She is fully dedicated to culture\, art and handicraft education\, and is keen to record her daily occurrence and lifestyle through illustration\, needle pen\, handicraft\, graphic design and printmaking After studying graphic design in secondary school\, she obtained her professional qualification by enrolling in the Printmaking and Art Administration Certificate Programme under the major of Visual Arts in Macau Polytechnic Institute. SUMMARY:Art Macao Outdoor Installations
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Learning from Macao\, by the Drawing Architecture Studio. Handover Gifts Museum \nSix eye-catching outdoor art installations are displayed at different corners of the city as part of Art Macao\, a mega international cultural and artistic event in Macau\, providing visitors with distinctive art and cultural attractions. \nLearning from Macao is a mega-urban panorama. Using the signature language of architectural axonometric drawing\, the mainland-based Drawing Architecture Studio has attempted to explore a new 21st-century urban design concept with Macau as its theme. It’s on display at the exterior wall of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. \nThe artwork “Gathering” by Su Xinping from Mainland China\, sets the huge hands at an upward angle. The work combines figurative expression with surreal dimensions to create a mountain-like shape\, allowing viewers to look up from a relatively low horizontal line of sight and feel the infinite space that extends out. The artwork can be visited at the Art Plaza of the Macao Cultural Centre. \nChakra was created by Riccardo Cordero\, from Italy. The sculptures\, located in Tap Seac Square\, are formed into a circle\, allowing people to visit and appreciate the work from various perspectives. \nGlobal City\, signed by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich\, uses steel and resin to interpret the concept of “a global village”\, highlighting the advantages of human interconnectedness while showing the threat posed by human civilization to the earth\, exploring the realistic significance of sharing the same house in the hustle and bustle in the development of humanity. You can visit this in front of the Taipa Houses-Museum. \nMade of mirror and fiberglass\, the installation Miss You\, by Thailand artist Gongkan conveys the idea that “love” is freedom without boundaries\, and everyone can express “love” without restraint. Open to the public at Anim’Arte Nam Van. \nIn Barra square\, you’ll be able to see Sun Boat\, a work that explores migration by Moataz Nasr (from Egypt)\, features a solar disc of 360 paddles to illustrate the endless\, interconnected movement of human beings on earth seeking a better life. \nWhen: September 1–30\, 2021 \nWhere: Handover Gifts Museum of Macao\, 237–285 Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau\, Art Plaza\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau\, Tap Seac Square\, Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida\, Macau\, Taipa Houses-Museum\, Anim’Arte Nam Van\, 744B Avenida Panorâmica do Lago Nam Van\, Macau\, and Barra square\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official page \nMiss You\, by Thailand artist Gongkan. SUMMARY:Moon-Themed Walks Across Macau
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for gatherings with family and friends during the Mid-Autumn Festival\, and one of the festive activities is moon appreciation. The Cultural Affairs Bureau has crafted a selection of viewpoints suggestions from where people can watch the moon and all its surroundings. Despite the dense urban environment\, there are actually many good spots for appreciating the full moon\, some of which not only offer spectacular views of the moon\, but also the iconic cityscape of Macau. Let’s enjoy a cosy evening with family and friends this Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes and lanterns! \nAt an elevation of 62.7 metres above sea level\, Penha Hill is located on the east of the Inner Harbour and the west of Nam Van Lake. It is also next to Barra Hill\, which is on its southwest. On the east side of Penha Hill is the official residence of the Portuguese Consul General in Macau (Former Hotel Bela Vista). Perched on top of the hill\, Our Lady of Penha Chapel was built in 1622 and once served as the residence of the Bishop of the Diocese of Macao. Featuring the spire of a Gothic church\, it has been praised as “a building of architectural value”\, and is listed in the Classified Immovable Properties. Overflowing with plants\, the hill is a tranquil and pleasing place for visitors to enjoy great views of Praia Grande. \nAt 223 metres above the ground\, visitors can enjoy amazing 360° views of Macau Peninsula\, Taipa and Coloane\, from the Observation Decks of Macau Tower. Brave visitors can also experience the thrill of taking photos from above through the laminate glass floor of the Observation Lounge\, overlooking the traffic on the ground. In addition to the great views during the day\, visitors can also enjoy the sunset and twilight\, brilliantly lit lights or the moonrise during the Mid-Autumn Festival\, creating more memories of the trip to Macau. \nThe leisure area on the Taipa Waterfront offers a large number of leisure facilities\, including a jogging track\, bicycle track\, children’s playground\, workout area and recreational facilities. Bicycle rental services are also available for visitors to enjoy the Taipa coastline while cycling. On mid-autumn nights\, visitors can enjoy the moon from the quiet seawall\, a perfect place for busy city dwellers to relax and relieve stress. \nAlso known as “Lou Yun” (Lou’s Garden) and “Lou Kau Garden”\, Lou Lim Ioc Park was named after the son of Lou Cheok Chi\, a wealthy merchant of Macau in the 19th century. It is the only park on the Macau peninsula landscaped in the style of classical parks of Suzhou and Hangzhou in China. Acquired by the Macau Government in 1973\, the park has elegant pavilions\, ponds\, bridges\, grottos\, water cascades\, curiously-shaped rockeries and winding corridors. The architectural elements of its Chon Chou Tong Pavilion and park walls\, styled after that of Southern Europe\, blend in harmoniously with its classical layout. The park is indeed an embodiment of Chinese and Western influences\, which also characterises the uniqueness of Macau’s culture. Every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival\, residents and visitors come to the park to enjoy the moon\, mooncakes and lantern riddles amidst the ancient and elegant scenery. \nAcclaimed as one of Macau’s Eight Scenic Spots\, the Taipa Houses represent the charming Portuguese architectural style in Taipa. The Portuguese residences along Avenida da Praia\, together with the neighbouring Our Lady of Carmel Church and the garden\, comprise a picturesque landscape in which the five greenhouses stand out as the most representative. \nIn 2016\, the Macao SAR Government re-capitalised these five buildings by transforming them into the “Macanese Living Museum”\, “Exhibitions Gallery”\, “Creative Casa”\, “Nostalgic House” and “House for Receptions” from west to east\, respectively. This project has converted the place into a combination of culture and creativity\, with outdoor performances and leisure elements\, making it a showcase of not only the culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries but of culture from all over the world. \nWhen: Ongoing \nWhere: Penha Hill\, Hilltop of Penha Hill\, Macau\,  Macau Tower\, Largo da Torre de Macau\, Taipa Waterfront\, Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa\, Taipa\, Lou Lim Ioc Garden\, 10 Estrada de Adolfo Loureiro\, Macau\, Taipa Houses-Museum\, Avenida da Praia\, Carmo\, Taipa \nHow much: Free admission for most of these spots* \n*Macau Tower Observation Deck – MOP $165 per person \n*Bike rent in Taipa – MOP $10–20 per hour \nFor more information\, call (853) 8988 4000\, send an email to info.dm@icm.gov.mo or check here
