SUMMARY:Pioneering Women Directors: Break and Make
DESCRIPTION:Women always have unique\, delicate and deep sense in filmmaking\, conveying their feelings toward the worldly matters while men lack these touches. \nA total of eight outstanding women directors from Europe\, the USA\, Australia\, Japan and Hong Kong are selected by Cinematheque Passion and their 11 great films will be screening on June 10 to 25. We hope the audience can broaden their minds by viewing these alternative artworks. Agnès Varda\, “the Ancestor of the New Film Wave” in France\, will lead the way in this film festival as her films are creative\, passionate\, intelligent and rich in content. \nAgnès Varda will be the director-in-focus. Without formal filming skills when she directed her debut feature entitled “La Pointe Courte” (1955)\, Varda influenced many French New Wave directors. Except “La Pointe Courte”\, her other 3 films will be screening as well\, including: “Vagabond”\, “The Gleaners and I” and “The Beaches of Agnès”. \nIn addition to Varda’s features\, 7 films from 7 outstanding filmmakers hailing from the USA\, Great Britain\, France\, Australia\, Japan\, and Belgium will be screening. They are:\n– Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (USA)\nSofia Coppola\, a USA director\, is remarkable in capturing the subtle relationships of urban men and women. \n– Sally Potter’s Orlando (Great Britain)\nBritish filmmaker Sally Potter is versatile and her films involved literature\, history\, identity\, values and social changes. Wide visions\, powerful visuals with far reaching connotation are her trademarks. \n– Claire Denis’s 35 Shots of Rum (France)\nClaire Denis\, just like Agnès Varda\, also comes from France\, her films touch on politics and race with critical\, audacious and distinct observation. \n– Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (Australia)\nGillian Armstrong\, revered as Australian women films’ founder. Women in her films go after their dreams and maintain good social values at the same time\, elegant and charming. \n– Naomi Kawase’s An (Japan)\nNaomi Kawase\, a filmmaker from Japan\, impressed the audience by her poetic visual images and touching storytelling skills. Her films were special in having oriental human sentiments. \n– Chantal Akerman’s 23\, Quai Du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles (Belgium)\nBelgium’s pioneer Chantal Akerman has diverse and innovative styles while challenging the traditional values. \n– Tong Shu-shuen’s The Arch (Hong Kong).\nTong Shu-shuen\, a talented Hong Kong filmmaker in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She likes exploring women’s struggle and how they respond the conservative era. Her films are artistic\, inspiring with special aesthetics and observations which are definitely ahead of the times. \nTrailer: https://youtu.be/LOhA30lCruo \nWhen: June 10 – June 25\, 2017\n \nWhere: Cinematheque-Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixao\, Macau\n \nHow much: MOP $60

SUMMARY:Colour Shape Love
DESCRIPTION:Joaquim Franco\, a Macau senior Portuguese artist will have his solo exhibition opening entitled\, “COLOUR SHAPE LOVE – Works by Joaquim Franco” in Art For All (AFA) at Art Garden. Franco worked in theatre\, as a set designer; undertook several interior design projects. As a Scientific Illustrator he worked in Archaeology\, Ethnography and Heritage Protection. This time\, a total of 19 acrylic paintings will be showcased. \n \nJoaquim’s paintings are rich-colored\, as he has a full understanding to the use of colors through the theoretical study of them. Those abstract paintings look simple\, while the use of colors is the key. His skilled abstract painting style is attractive and not old-fashioned. Not only using colors\, but drawing shapes is also Joaquim’s another well-developed skill. Joaquim believes that only love and peace from the inner heart could create art. This is the reason why the exhibition is named “COLOUR SHAPE LOVE”. \nWhen: June 17 – July 16 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Omar Saadoune Solo Exhibition - Monologue
DESCRIPTION:As Omar Saadoune’s first solo exhibition in Macau\, Monologue will showcase a selection of Saadoune’s finest work held in the Blanc Art exhibition room. \nBorn in Morocco and graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan\, Omar Saadoune has always been passionate about art\, and especially interested in the physical form of arts. His paintings are bold and appealing; the combination of arcs and lines form the basic structure of most of his work\, colors are then dripped painted onto the canvas\, creating an unspeakable tension.\nThe artist challenges the boundary of the traditional visual art\, through painting\, multimedia work\, film and live performance\, Saadoune is constantly touching on the pressing matter in the society – the oppressed humanity\, the conflicts and the future direction of humanity. \nWhen: June 23-August 26\, 2017 \nWhere: Blanc Art\, Flat M\, 258 Kin Heng Long Plaza\, Alameda\, Dr. Carlos D’Assumpcao \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, visit www.blancart.co

SUMMARY:Representing Women through MAM Collection – 19th and 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:*The Macao Museum of Art is temporarily closed until further notice due to having been affected by Typhoon Hato.* \nDuring the 19th century and 20th century\, if a woman wanted to succeed as a professional artist anywhere in the world\, she would have to circumvent gender-specific artistic and social hierarchies. While the access to the profession was limited\, women had always been an incredible source of inspiration for male artists who usually portrayed them within the exact roles they were supposed to play: goddess\, mothers\, servants or concubines. \nThe exhibition is organized in four sections: ‘A Western Tradition in Macao – 19th Century’\, ‘Views of Europeans on China – Late 19th Century’\, ‘Calendars and Posters – Early 20th Century’ and ‘Propaganda – Mid 20th Century’. The works presented use different media such as oil paintings\, drawings\, watercolors\, gouache\, posters\, and sculptures. Art served as a way to reinforce the values about the role of women\, but it also served to express alternative views. \nWhen: June 30-December 10\, 2017 \nWhere: 3rd floor\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, visit www.mam.gov.mo

SUMMARY:Restless Nature - Wooden Sculpture Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Taipa Village Cultural Association proudly presents local accomplished artist Tong Chong’s wooden sculpture exhibition “Restless Nature”. \nHe unveils his masterpiece artworks to the public\, showcasing Tong Chong’s new collection with plywood technique and reflects the outcome of his three years of meticulous research on this subject of sculpting with plywood. In this new series of sculptures\, each piece took at least four to six months to finish due to gluing procedures\, whilst the sculpting itself is a process which requires physical and psychological stamina that cannot be taken lightly. \nThis tells us about Chong’s character\, as it is embodied in each piece: the perseverance to achieve his goals and a restless soul eager to evolve and perfect his technical skills. \nWhen: July 5 – September 6\, 2017 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua dos Clerigos\, Taipa\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, contact +853 2857 6118 or visit www.taipavillagemacau.com

SUMMARY:Boundless 4
DESCRIPTION:Four fantastic artists unite in an exhibition entitled Boundless 4: New Art People Project\, by Ox Warehouse. The participating artist are Nelson Joel Jorge Madeira\, Sou Chon Kit\, Fan Keng In and Lee Man Hou. \nThe four ventured into the world of oil painting on the ever unknown path of life. The four started the exploration of oil painting under the guidance of artist Cai Guo Jie and incorporated painting as part of their life. Looking back\, it was certainly a meaningful journey from the beginners’ exploration to the more matured and peculiar styles. \nWe can see in the paintings the painters’ observation of life and surroundings\, their free imaginations\, as well as scenes full of colors and sounds\, peculiar creatures\, fiery flames or circling rainbows–the expressions deep from their heart and the attempts of connecting with the world and unlocking more possibilities. \nThe Ox Warehouse aims to help the public to better understand this group of passionate youth and explore the boundless possibilities through painting. \nWhen: July 8 – August 13\, 2017 \nWhere: 2F Gallery of Ox Warehouse\, No Cruzamento da Avenidado Coronel Mesquita coma Avenida Almirante Lacerda\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor Enquiry: +853 2853 0026 or oxwarehouse@gmail.com

SUMMARY:World Animation Festival in Summer
DESCRIPTION:The long summer vacation is around the corner. “World Animation Festival in Summer”\, a collaboration between Cinematheque Passion and Hong Kong curator Mr. Jonathan Hung\, comes to you in August featuring 13 wonderful animation films from Europe\, USA\, Japan and South Korea. Audiences of different ages will discover their own favorites in a summer filled with fun. Two filmmakers with quite different styles were selected as “Directors-in-Focus”\, they are Japanese Makoto Shinkai and South Korean Sang-ho Yeon\, who will take us on journeys across the heavens\, the Earth and even hell. \nIn addition\, parents and kids can learn how to make simple animation by joining “Si Naai’s Family Animation Workshop”\, which is co-organized by Cinematheque Passion and Si Naai. A maximum of ten parents and ten kids aged from 6 to 11 (or studying in primary class 1 to 6) can sign up for this 8-hour workshop. \n“The Red Turtle” (France/Belgium/ Japan) is the first international co-production between Studio Ghibli and the Academy Award winning Dutch animator Dudok de Wit. This animation carries no dialogue but tells a touching story about the relationship between nature and humans. “My Life as a Zucchini” (Switzerland/ France) is a colorful stop-motion clay animation\, depicting a little boy’s vision of the adult world\, which won the Audience Award as well as the Cristal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. \n“Ethel & Ernest” (UK) and “Window Horses” (Canada) are both about two generational stories. “Ethel & Ernest” is poetic while “Window Horses” is humorous\, creating contrasts that are strong and funny both in appearance and style. \n“Revengeance” (USA) is a production of critically-acclaimed director Bill Plympton and Jim Lujan\, conveying weird\, mysterious and appealing elements. \n“The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow” (South Korea) is an enchanting feature animation made in Korea a few years ago\, a creative and funny adventure with a romantic love story. \nWhen: August 12–27\, 2017 \nWhere: Cinematheque-Passion\, 13 Travessa Da Paixao\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 (full-time students and senior citizens aged 65 or above can enjoy 50% discount) \nFor more details\, contact +853 2852 2585 or visit www.cinematheque-passion.mo

SUMMARY:The Good\, the Bad and the Ambiguous – A Film Noir Series
DESCRIPTION:“The Good\, the Bad and the Ambiguous – A Film Noir Series”\, a collaboration between Cinematheque Passion and Comuna de Han-Ian\, will commence in September featuring 10 amazing classics from Europe\, USA\, Japan\, South Korea and Hong Kong. Let’s open our eyes to enjoy thriller films with unique visual styles. \nFilm noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas\, which were popular from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. SUMMARY:FLOW: Glass Art Exhibition by Sunny Wang
DESCRIPTION:Glass artist Sunny Wang has been engaged in the art of glass teaching and creative activities for many years. She is currently working as an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her artworks were awarded an Honourable Mention at the “International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa” in Japan and the First Prize in Single Material at the “Golden Glass Awards” in Taiwan\, among others\, and have been showcased in exhibitions in countries such as Australia\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, Maldives\, Singapore\, South Korea and Mainland China. \nThis exhibition features twenty pieces (sets) of Wang’s glass installations. Her works are rich in oriental cultural elements. Among them\, the work “Poetic Stones” is inspired by the Buddhist ode of The Ten Ox-herding Pictures and ancient Chinese phonology. Twenty-eight black stone-shaped glass of different shapes and sizes are displayed in four rows with seven in each row\, corresponding to the rhythm of seven words quatrains. She uses lines in her works\, making large circles as the level tone\, while small circles as the oblique tone. Each circle refers to a moment\, a stone refers to a rhyme. There is no way back and no interval in the course of glassblowing\, just like calligraphy writing. The creation process has to be completed without interval and reversal\, corresponding with the artist’s perception of “living at the moment”. \nWhen: September 11—November 19\, 2017 \nWhere: Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau\, Leal Senado Building\, 163 Av. How will this love triangle play out? \nSpring-Time Experimental Theatre has produced a fascinating and entertaining local take on this compelling tale which examines issues of class\, education\, romance\, and gender\, with a light and humorous touch. Featuring works presented by dazzling young talents\, a reinterpretation of classics\, grand productions brought by internationally famous ensembles\, and orchestras and the local productions\, the festival journeys into a brilliant new era of vivacity! \nThis year’s festival features 17 programs. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Umberto Giordano\, the festival opens with Giordano’s best-known opera “Andrea Chénier”. Beloved for its touching arias and exquisite orchestration\, “Andrea Chénier” is a passionate love story written in the style of verismo. Lyric tragedy “Orfeo ed Euridice” by Christoph Willibald Gluck will be staged outdoors at Mount Fortress. Local opera production\, “A Fragrant Dream”\, will be remade with a polished script\, refined libretto\, and a starry line-up. Budding international talents such as Russian-Lithuanian pianist Lukas Geniušas and South Korea’s leading ensemble Novus String Quartet\, as well as local talents in the third cycle of the “Bravo Macao!” concert series will grace the stage at the Festival. \nA number of world-renowned ensembles and orchestras will appear on stage at this year’s festival. The distinguished Vienna Philharmonic will be performing a resounding finale\, while the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will delight its audience with a night of Beethoven. Other famous musicians and ensembles include Chen’s erhu family\, rising jazz star Jazzmeia Horn\, fresh electronic musician el fog\, the acclaimed Coro Lirico Siciliano\, the joyous South African ensemble Soweto Gospel Choir and Hong Kong singer William So. \n \nWhen: September 29–October 30\, 2017 \nWhere: Macao Cultural Center\, Dom Pedro V Theater\, Old Court Building\, Mount Fortress\, St. Dominic’s Church \nHow much: MOP $150–MOP $1500 \nFor more ticket details\, visit www.icm.gov.mo\, www.macauticket.com
