SUMMARY:Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie
DESCRIPTION:Macau artist Cai Guo Jie will have his solo exhibition “Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie” in AFA Macau at 6:30pm on April 3. It has been three years since his last solo exhibition in AFA Beijing. This time Cai will have his latest watercolor series\, showing the Macau sceneries in a perspective of looking down. \nCai’s exhibition ‘Overlook the Macau City’ displays a total of 14 landscape paintings of Macao scenery – Mong Ha Hill\, the Inner Harbour\, Ruins of St. Paul’s\, St. Lawrence’s Church\, Coloane Alto among others and even a panorama of the Macao Peninsula – all are familiar to the eyes of both locals and visitors. These paintings are different from his previous creations: in most of them the horizon is elevated to a considerably high level\, and it even disappears completely in some of them\, as in the painting named ‘Camões Looking East’. The viewer seems to have been lifted up in the air and placed at a high vantage point overlooking the subject. In addition\, it is worth noting that the dimension of the paintings has been enlarged to a full sheet\, the maximum size for watercolor paintings. The same as usual\, the painter’s aggressive autography hovers at the top of each and every painting\, as if sitting atop\, looking down and describing the ever-changing cityscapes\, where the painter has indulged himself in unharnessed imagination. \n \n“Overlook the Macau City – Works by Cai Guo Jie” is partly sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Macao SAR Government. Media partners include Hoje Macau and Ponto Final. \nWhen: April 4 to 23 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário
DESCRIPTION:Young artist Célia Rosário opens her solo exhibition “Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário” in AFA Macau at 6:30 pm on April 21. As a new member of AFA\, Celia marks her second solo exhibition in Macau. With 14 acrylic works that will be showcased\, the artist creates strong primitivism in the totem images on monumental poles and the detached\, deformed presentations as subjects of her work by using striking color contrasts. These are all about primitivism. \nAgainst a sharp\, vermilion background in ‘Untitled 6’ are poles standing in a circle with men sitting on top in grassland\, conjuring up the image of a clan performing a sacrificial rite. As the major part of the work\, the totem image looks dark and mysterious in the vivid\, orange-red backdrop\, with its centre resembling a black hole especially with the radiating red colour\, ready to draw in its viewers. It is the very representation of strong totem worship. \n \n“Native Colors – Works by Célia Rosário” is partly sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Macao SAR Government. \nWhen: April 21 – May 7 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nHow much: Free Admissions \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Guns and Flowers－Experimental Theatre Work
DESCRIPTION:This theater work depicts the situation of women in wartime and postwar times\, concerning the issues of War and Gender. It is not the dichotomy on women and men; however\, performers are both men and women on stage to show the humanity through their multiple roles\, especially the quality of female soldiers. Regardless of the past and present\, the people in wartime are treated as “consumable”. After the war\, women are even classified as “defective” and hardly could successfully integrate into family and society. Even if women are not in prison\, their physical and mental states are still “imprisoned” in dark corners of somewhere. \nThis experimental theater work is interdisciplinary with drama\, music and movements; in particular\, weaving handcraft delivers another layer of concept “Strings of Longing in Hands” into the play\, which inspired from the lack of resources during or after wars. People have to maintain their life by hard labor work or creating things from few materials left around. For women\, handicraft is no longer an interest or a hobby after wars; they must live on with this technique. Through which\, women could perhaps deliver happiness when giving to someone else\, or obtain some profit when selling to people. The least but the most important is that they could receive personal healing and enjoyment in the process of making. \nWhen: April 21 – 22\, 2017 \n8:00 to 9:00pm \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, No Cruzamento da Avenidado Coronel Mesquitacoma Avenida Almirante Lacerda Macau \nHow much: MOP $100 and Mop $80 for Students\, Senior Citizens and Disabled Person \nFor more information\, contact +852 853 0026 or email: oxwarehouse@gmail.commacau art \nVisit www.oxwarehouse.blogspot.com

SUMMARY:Talk:The Visual World of Xavier Dolan and Director-in-focus: Xavier Dolan

Coming from Canada\, he is prolific in filming six feature films in seven years from “I Killed My Mom” in 2009 to “It’s Only The End of the World” in 2016. All his films are much awaited and won acclaim from the media and the film festivals. Except being a director\, Dolan is also a scriptwriter\, actor\, editor\, producer\, and costume designer. A talented and versatile star you must be curious to know\, Hoi will try to introduce the characteristics of his films and visual style in a lucid way to Macao audience at the talk. \nGuest Speaker: Hoi (A film buff from Hong Kong that enjoys traveling around the world and observes human nature through the moving images of 24 frames per second. A strong believer that good narrative films can inspire curiosity and empathy) \nWhen: May 20\, 2:00 – 4:00pm \nWhere: Cinematheque-Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixao\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 \nFor more information\, visit their Facebook page \nwww.facebook.com/events/303340690093140 \n  \nWe live in an era in which fame is much better to be achieved early. The film premiered at the Director’s Fortnight program of the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and received three awards. SUMMARY:Our Belle Époque Macao - The Works of Leo Fan
DESCRIPTION:Taking the blue sky and the white flowers as the fundamentals of the paintings by Leo Fan\, such recurring elements reflect the artist’s perceptions of the future. Fan’s allusions are also outlined through his ever-changing style of artistic presentation. The thematic subject of the works showcased in this exhibition is “face” where each and every portrait is embedded with a touching story. The traces of every single human being’s hard work in this unadorned world is marked. Some of them may achieve fame for themselves\, while others remain anonymous; their persistence and faith are beyond materialistic pursuits. It is precisely the passion of these individuals that Leo Fan glorifies as the “Honourable Souls”. \nWhen: 12:00pm – 7:00pm\, May 27 – June 25\, 2017 \nWhere: 2F Gallery of Ox Warehouse\, 87-97 Av. do Cel. SUMMARY:A Retrospective Exhibition of the Ferry Transport between Macao and the Islands
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-twentieth century\, the ferry vessel was an important transportation tool for passengers between the Macao peninsula and the two islands\, Taipa and Coloane. It is an integral part of Macao’s history and memories. \nThis exhibition unveils a number of collections for the first time\, such as the original documents “Stock Booklet of Un Fat Ferry between Macao and Coloane” and “Lease Contract of Motorboat” of the ferry operation company\, as well as other items related to the ferry vessels\, including photographs\, ferry tickets\, newspapers and commemorative publications\, among others. \nIn the exhibition\, interactive electronic screens are also available to introduce “The Evolution of Macao’s Topography”\, which covers the territory’s coastlines and vessel routes from different eras. Meanwhile\, video excerpts of interviews with several old residents are screened to share their stories in taking ferry vessels\, revealing the unique rustic simplicity of this small city. SUMMARY:Record of Life: 30 – Printmaking Works by Tuzi
DESCRIPTION:Macau artist Ng Lai Seong also known as Tuzi will have her solo exhibition “30–Printmaking Works by Tuzi” in AFA Macau at 6:30pm on Friday\, June 2. Tuzi graduated from China Central Academy of Fine Arts with a Masters Degree in Printmaking. She is currently living and working as an artist in Beijing. This time\, Tuzi will come back and hold her second solo exhibition in Macau. For this exhibition\, she will show 34 artworks from her latest printmaking series. \n \nAs a copper printmaking artist\, Tuzi is capable of producing copperplate paintings after many years of relevant advanced studies. She can easily turn an idea into a picture by skilfully using the characteristics of copperplate painting production. Her works are abstract and intuitive\, frank and straightforward but not rigid or affected – just like her real personality. Therefore\, when we appreciate her works\, we can feel relaxed as if the works are naturally radiating a healing magnetic field. We can always see a lot of life experience from her works. \n \nTurning 30 this year\, Tuzi has experienced many things in life: she has moved forward in life’s journey\, earned a master’s degree\, started her own family and also took some time to rest. She hopes to set off again with 30 works of this exhibition\, while also being a small conclusion – a sorting out of her thoughts. That is why this exhibition is named “30” and is displayed in the form of a crafts book as if a diary telling her life in pieces. \nWhen: June 3 – June 25 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Franco worked in theatre\, as a set designer; undertook several interior design projects. As a Scientific Illustrator he worked in Archaeology\, Ethnography and Heritage Protection. This time\, a total of 19 acrylic paintings will be showcased. \n \nJoaquim’s paintings are rich-colored\, as he has a full understanding to the use of colors through the theoretical study of them. Those abstract paintings look simple\, while the use of colors is the key. His skilled abstract painting style is attractive and not old-fashioned. Not only using colors\, but drawing shapes is also Joaquim’s another well-developed skill. Joaquim believes that only love and peace from the inner heart could create art. This is the reason why the exhibition is named “COLOUR SHAPE LOVE”. \nWhen: June 17 – July 16 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nThe gallery is on the Ground Floor\, open from Tuesdays to Sundays (12:00pm to 7:00pm) and closed on Mondays and public holidays. \nFor more information\, contact +853 2836 6064 during office hours or email to info@afamacau.com. SUMMARY:Omar Saadoune Solo Exhibition - Monologue
DESCRIPTION:As Omar Saadoune’s first solo exhibition in Macau\, Monologue will showcase a selection of Saadoune’s finest work held in the Blanc Art exhibition room. \nBorn in Morocco and graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan\, Omar Saadoune has always been passionate about art\, and especially interested in the physical form of arts. His paintings are bold and appealing; the combination of arcs and lines form the basic structure of most of his work\, colors are then dripped painted onto the canvas\, creating an unspeakable tension.\nThe artist challenges the boundary of the traditional visual art\, through painting\, multimedia work\, film and live performance\, Saadoune is constantly touching on the pressing matter in the society – the oppressed humanity\, the conflicts and the future direction of humanity. \nWhen: June 23-August 26\, 2017 \nWhere: Blanc Art\, Flat M\, 258 Kin Heng Long Plaza\, Alameda\, Dr. Carlos D’Assumpcao \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, visit www.blancart.co

SUMMARY:Representing Women through MAM Collection – 19th and 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:*The Macao Museum of Art is temporarily closed until further notice due to having been affected by Typhoon Hato.* \nDuring the 19th century and 20th century\, if a woman wanted to succeed as a professional artist anywhere in the world\, she would have to circumvent gender-specific artistic and social hierarchies. While the access to the profession was limited\, women had always been an incredible source of inspiration for male artists who usually portrayed them within the exact roles they were supposed to play: goddess\, mothers\, servants or concubines. \nThe exhibition is organized in four sections: ‘A Western Tradition in Macao – 19th Century’\, ‘Views of Europeans on China – Late 19th Century’\, ‘Calendars and Posters – Early 20th Century’ and ‘Propaganda – Mid 20th Century’. The works presented use different media such as oil paintings\, drawings\, watercolors\, gouache\, posters\, and sculptures. Art served as a way to reinforce the values about the role of women\, but it also served to express alternative views. \nWhen: June 30-December 10\, 2017 \nWhere: 3rd floor\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, visit www.mam.gov.mo
