SUMMARY:Constellations: A Chinese New Wave Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) presents Constellations\, an avant-garde romantic drama staged at CCM’s small auditorium next January 29 and 30 in Mandarin\, with English subtitles. Brought by new wave group Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental\, a company based in Beijing\, the piece is conceived by internationally acclaimed maverick director Wang Chong\, based in the awarding-winning work written by British playwright Nick Payne. \nOriginally premiered in London\, back in 2012\, Constellations conquered the Best Play of the Year award. Now\, a new vision of Payne’s tragic comedy merges filmic language with a theatrical frame to illustrate the vastness of the universe and the dimension of human solitude. To better grasp themes like time and space\, Wang Chong uses in his production over a dozen cameras building up a dual stage and conveying the idea of parallel universes. The story revolves around the relationship between a cosmologist\, a bee-keeper and the multiplicity of choices they make in multiple dimensions\, with different outcomes. \nPremiered in many stages around the world\, from the West End to Broadway\, the U.S. version starred Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal. In Macau\, the Cultural Centre hosts a post-performance talk with Wang Chong\, right after each show\, where the director will share with the audience insights on his theatrical concepts. \nWhen: Tuesday and Wednesday\, 7:45pm\, January 29 and 30\, 2020 \nWhere: Small auditorium\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $180 per person \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:“Xian Drum Music” – Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage Music
DESCRIPTION:An expert in Xian drum music will be the artistic director of the workshop and will introduce the characteristics of Xian drum music to the audience in a simple and profound way\, and explain the characteristics of each piece of music played\, allowing the audience to better feel the local cultures. At the end of each explanation\, the music starts slowly\, and you can feel the collision of thoughts in the music. \nXian drum music is one of the most important musical varieties in traditional Chinese music and is one type of traditional Chinese “ind and percussion music”. This music genre is popular in the urban and rural areas of Xian\, Shaanxi Province\, and along the foothills of the Zhongnan Mountains. Xian drum music originated from the Tang Dynasty\, the Song Dynasty\, the Yuan Dynasty\, and the Ming Dynasty\, and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. There is no accurate record of its production era\, but its sheet music\, musical instruments\, playing forms\, and song titles all have deep roots in ancient Chinese music\, especially the music of the Tang and Song dynasties\, therefore\, Xian Drum Music is known as the “living fossil” of ancient Chinese music. \nWhen: 2:30pm (workshop)\, 4:00pm (concert)\, Saturday\, January 30\, 2021 \nWhere: Broadway Theatre\, Broadway Macau\, Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information and registration for the workshop\, click here

SUMMARY:"From In" Performance
DESCRIPTION:“From In” is a Chinese contemporary dance piece brought by the Xie Xin Dance Theatre to be staged in two shows. Described as a frenzied display of contrasts\, “From In” is an enigmatic and fluid work interpreted by nine dancers whose figures appear and disappear\, like fading images in a film. Xie Xin’s work explores a multiplicity of moments where the bodies are taken to the extreme\, flowing in their elasticity to produce an aesthetics of priming elegance. \nSince its 2016 debut in Shanghai\, the show toured numerous cities in China from Beijing and Hong Kong to Hangzhou\, and was invited to various European dance festivals\, like the Stuttgart Colours and the Kuopio Dance where it has been acclaimed by audience and critics alike. \nDubbed as a driving force in the developing Chinese contemporary dance scene\, Xie Xin founded her ground-breaking company in 2014. The creator’s collaborations with acclaimed choreographers like Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui\, amongst many other international names\, have inspired Xie Xin’s creative drive. In China\, her recent appearance at “Dance Smash”\, a TV reality show\, transformed the dancer into a national sensation. \nThis premiere tour to Macau is enriched with a workshop hosted by the very own Xie Xin\, sharing some of her views and providing participants with a chance to explore their bodies\, inspired by the creator’s choreographic moves. Besides these sessions\, after the second performance\, Xie Xin will also share with the audience some insights on her dance piece. \n“From In” hits the staged on February 2021 at the Macao Cultural Centre. Tickets will be available from 13 December (Sunday) at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing Network outlets\, subject to various discounts. \nWhen: Wednesday and Thursday\, 7:45pm\, February 24 and 25\, 2021 \nWhere: Small Auditorium\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $180 per person \nFor more information\, click here\, and for ticketing\, here

SUMMARY:“re:ai” - Vernissage & Music Performance
DESCRIPTION:The dual exhibition “re:ai” of Macanese artist Edmundo Remédios Lameiras and his daughter Emma Remédios Lameiras will take place at the gallery of the Portuguese Bookshop. In the exhibition\, Edmundo draws elements from popular social media culture and downloaded different profile pictures of people from the Internet\, and then uses multiple AI (artificial intelligence) imaging applications to modify and reshape the original representations of these avatars. \nFrom here\, the topic of “portrait” is introduced and developed into a series of imagery. These printed works are colorful and the facial features of each portrait have been deliberately “fine-tuned” by the artist. The characteristics of the eyes\, ears\, nose\, and mouth have been intentionally tampered with\, jumping out of the boundaries of being recognizable or not. As an art form\, it becomes a reflection of universal cultural and social phenomena. \nThe artist’s daughter\, Emma\, who loves drawing and poetry\, has chosen the online “Automatic Text Generation” (ATG) system application and entered her own poetry to obtain sentences generated by artificial intelligence\, combined with her drawings\, she processed further and designed\, combining specific ideas of human nature with artificially produced and random text\, to create a series of profound images. \nAt the basement gallery of the Portuguese Bookshop\, what the two generations of Macau native artists want to show us is the combination of inheritance and innovation. Their reshaping of identity\, in this small city full of colonial history\, is brewing energy to invite people to enter the thoughts and visions of the future. \nWhen: March 13–27\, 2021 \nWhere: Portuguese Bookshop\, 16 R. de São Domingos\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Human Observation – Os Wei Multimedia Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Human Observation is a long-term image experiment project by O CHI WAI (Os). This exhibition features his photos from the project. The artist likes walking across different corners in the city\, observing and recording at will the surroundings with a smartphone. Shooting photos in an intuitive way\, he may be a top gun in the group where ‘everyone is a photographer. Educated in visual communication design in Taiwan\, Os abandons conventional photography techniques\, and most of his photographic works were taken with a mobile phone at whim\, on themes such as figures\, nature\, and buildings. The works\, although on subjects unrelated to one another\, convey his inner feelings through visual media. \nHe looks at the world\, at Macau people’s subjective consciousness\, with a focus on daily life and work. Observing others\, he found that man is a strange animal\, always sending messages with dressing\, facial expressions\, behaviors and movements. In Macau\, a city of diversity\, various lifestyles co-exist after centuries of interaction among peoples from different cultures\, creating a close yet strange relationship between individuals\, which is typical of Macau. This exhibition\, combing Os’s records from Human Observation in recent years\, shows more than 100 photos all around the exhibition space – placed in a disorderly way. They constitute image fragments of Os\, dreamy yet realistic. Also on display is a video work converted from images and then set to music which serves as the background sound for the whole exhibition venue. This way\, the artist pieces together audio-visual elements to bring out the theme at a deeper level. \nThe exhibition then introduces the video installation by extending this concept. A mirror confronts visitors once they enter the venue. In such a straightforward way\, each exhibition goer’s activities on the site will be monitored and shown through visual communication behind scenes. This type of invisible surveillance is becoming more and more popular\, on the one hand\, because of man’s need for a sense of security\, on the other hand\, a sense of insecurity – as if binary opposition was rooted in humans\, appearing in different forms in different times. \nThe British TV series Black Mirror explores the relationship between man and technology\, with each episode revolving around technology. The protagonists usually enjoy conveniences brought by the technology but will end up suffering from the negative consequences of using it. In one episode\, most people choose to implant memory chips\, using the eyeballs as lenses to record all the scenes beheld and archive recorded footage for future reading or use as evidence. Such extreme self-monitoring may soon become a reality in humans. Os\, as a recorder of visual images\, is precisely presenting the most authentic\, real-world images with the latest technology. \nWhen: March 23–April 24\, 2021 \nWhere: At Light Art Gallery\, 1 Pátio do Padre Narciso\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here
