SUMMARY:Sacred Music Festival 2016
DESCRIPTION:When: November 26 to December 2 \nWhere: St. Dominic – St. Joseph – Mandarin House \n \nLES SACQUEBOUTIERS \nWhen they decided to found Les Sacqueboutiers in 1976\, Jean-Pierre Canihac and Jean-Pierre Mathieu\, like pioneers\, were among the first to embark on the adventurous rediscovery of early instruments. It was necessary to find the authentic instruments\, reinvent a playing technique\, reconsider the repertoire\, exhume it more often! \nLes Sacqueboutiers started then a thorough and imaginative approach of a rich and profuse repertoire. This research implies a constant investment in the study of the interpretation style corresponding to this rediscovered music. The quality of their work soon attracted attention\, and they took part in ground-breaking recordings of Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine\, conducted by Michel Corboz\, Jordi Savall\, William Christie\, Philippe Herreweghe\, Gabriel Garrido\, Jean-Claude Malgoire. \nSince then\, they have performed music ranging from the Renaissance to Mozart\, with many prestigious ensembles including Hespèrion XX and XXI\, Les Arts Florissants\, La Chapelle Royale\, A Sei Voci\, Elyma\, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy\, the Clément Janequin Ensemble… With these ensembles or in their own programmes\, Les Sacqueboutiers have appeared at all the great European festivals\, in North and South America\, in Japan… \nThe group comprises a nucleus of cornetts and sackbuts\, which is joined\, as the needs arise\, by other instruments (violins\, viols\, bassoons\, shawms\, percussions…) and vocalist(s) (a soloist\, a vocal quartet\, or a choir). \nFlexibility is necessary in the performance of such a varied repertoire. In collaboration with specialized musicologists\, Les Sacqueboutiers often work on revivals. Indeed\, one of the ensemble’s major objectives is to play an active part in the gradual rediscovery of the very fine works that make up our European musical heritage. \nLes Sacqueboutiers were nominated as the Ensemble de l’année (Ensemble of the year) at the Victoires de la Musique classique 2008. \n \nAMARILLIS \nAmarillis is now one of Europe’s most original Baroque ensembles. Created in 1994\, the group\, counselled by Pierre Hantaï\, Christophe Rousset and Christophe Coin\, has won several competitions: first prize in the York Early Music Competition in 1995\, first prize in the FNAPEC ‘Musique d’Ensemble’ Competition in 1997\, and first prize and the public prize in the Sinfonia Competition (chaired by Gustav Leonhardt) in 1997. In 1999\, Amarillis was distinguished by the ‘Révélations classiques’ (Adami). \nAccording to the requirements of the repertoire\, the basic nucleus is joined by musicians of recognised talent. Amarillis works regularly with the finest singers of the younger generation\, including Patricia Petibon\, Stéphanie d’Oustrac\, Mathias Vidal\, Robert Getchell\, Emiliano Gonzalez-Toro\, Benoît Arnould… \nAmarillis has received the highest praise from the national and international press for all 15 of the CDs in its catalogue\, recorded for labels Ambroisie-Naïve\, Ambronay\, Sony Classical\, AgOgique\, NoMadMusic. The 15th recording\, Baroque inspiration\, was released in March 2016 with the NoMadMusic label. Iconic works of different musical styles from the Baroque period are put in resonance with compounds or songs arranged by jazz clarinetist Louis Sclavis and saxophonist Matthieu Metzger with shared taste for fantasy and freedom of tone in the melodic invention. \nInternationally renowned\, Amarillis gives concerts in France (Théâtre des Champs Élysées\, de Poissy\, Philharmonie de Paris\, Festivals of Ambronay\, Auvers sur Oise\, Saintes\, Sablé sur Sarthe…\, Versailles Center for Baroque Music\, Operas of Lille\, Versailles\, Angers\, Nantes\, Avignon…\, Arsenal of Metz\, Besançon National Scene…)\, Great Britain (Royal Academy of Music\, York and Brighton’s festivals…)\, Holland\, Spain\, Germany\, Latin America\, Canada\, Senegal\, India\, Russia\, China and Hong-Kong… (tours supported by the French Institute). \nAmarillis can regularly be heard on France Musique and Radio Classique. The BBC\, Mezzo\, France télévision and Arte have recorded several of its concerts. \n \nSPREZZATURA \nThe rationale is to Sprezzatura music and more specifically the baroque to everyone. Indeed this music is not restricted to insiders. It speaks directly to each of us because it is built according to the strict rules of rhetoric\, that is to say in accordance with the profound nature of human construction. Revenue late on our stages\, Baroque music is still very little known. \nSprezzatura proposes to us to rediscover modernity with simple and effective actions\, concerts\, conferences\, workshops and open to all project participants. It’s a simple message\, but extremely difficult to achieve as it requires care and attention that Sprezzatura wants us to choose: to break down barriers between professionals and amateurs on the one hand\, between artists and also spectators. So to be born through this artistic dimension that lies within each of us and in the most possible dimensions: vertical\, horizontal and depth. \nCreated by Sébastien Fournier in 2005 Sprezzatura seduced by these innovative and bold concepts. Many artists joined the group and occur regularly around this core. The research and publishing Xavier Janot gives all opportunities to interpret an original repertoire. \nIn 2010 Sprezzatura is chosen by the government to represent France at the World Expo in Shanghai. Therefore\, all regularly invited to China for concerts and master classes\, notably at the National Conservatory of Beijing and Xian. The eclecticism and curiosity of artists invite them to occur in equally extraordinary places and participate in Expos Concerts\, collaborating with dancers\, puppeteers and circus of illusions Nicolas Fayol\, Kaori Ito\, David Drouard\, Paco Dècina Jean Gaudin\, Mauro Corda\, Florence Guérin … With these artists\, every time\, all created and produced music in custom soundscapes. \nIn 2014 Sprezzatura toured throughout China to play and experiment within the Western and Chinese music. Finally\, Michel Deneuve\, composer and cristaliste\, is the guest of the 2015-2016 season to record a CD in a baroque and contemporary repertoire. Together they have already occurred in Venice\, Paris and Guadalaraja (Spain). \nIn 2015 Sprezzatura was the guest of HK French May Festival and Sébastien Fournier participated to the Sacred Music Festival to Macau.

SUMMARY:Parade through Macao\, Latin City
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Parade through Macao\, Latin City’\, celebrating the 17th anniversary of Macao’s handover to China\, will be held under the motto “An Annual Celebration for the Entire City – VIVA” and themed “VIVA’s Adventures through Shan Hai”. VIVA will travel through a time gate and set off to the mysterious land of the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing)\, kicking off a fantastic adventure and taking part in the “Peace\, Love and Cultural Integration” party\, celebrating the handover together. \nSet off on a fantastic adventure through a new route\nThis year the Parade takes the Classic of Mountains and Seas as its background. VIVA travels through extraordinary mountains and rivers\, where he meets bizarre beasts that tell him amusing stories along the way. On the day of the Parade\, VIVA crosses the time gate at 4pm at Largo da Companhia de Jesus\, taking off from the Ruins of St. Paul’s\, together with performing groups from Latin-speaking countries and other foreign regions as well as hundreds of local talents\, on a journey that goes through Rua de S. Paulo\, St. Anthony’s Square\, Rua de D. Belchior Carneiro\, Rua dos Artilheiros\, Rua de Sanches de Miranda\, Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro\, Santa Casa da Misericórdia Albergue\, Rua de São Roque\, Rua Nova de São Lázaro\, St. Lazarus Square\, Rua do Volong\, Rua do Tap Siac and Rua de Afonso de Albuquerque\, arriving at its final destination at 5:30pm at Tap Siac Square to celebrate the handover in a festive and carnival atmosphere. Additionally\, this year the Parade offers an alternative route: some performing groups will depart from Senado Square and march through Largo de S. Domingos\, Rua de S. Domingos\, Rua da Palha and Rua de S. Paulo\, finally joining the remainder of the parade at the Ruins of St. Paul’s\, thereby inviting even more participants to take part in the celebration of the handover. \nThe Classic of Mountains and Seas is a popular Chinese ancient classic that records the geography of ancient times\, the deities and beasts and bizarre myths\, and is known as China’s oldest “encyclopaedia”. In his adventure\, VIVA comes across numerous interesting friends. \nAdditional activities contribute to the Parade’s festive atmosphere\nA series of activities will be rolled out in conjunction with the Parade\, including rehearsals throughout the city\, which offer a glimpse of the event. Before the Parade kicks off on 4 December\, several mysterious creatures with painted faces will pop up along the route to colour the faces of the public. In addition\, workshops\, a photography contest and social media games with prizes will be progressively announced and open to the public’s participation. \nWhen: 4pm – 5:30pm\, Sunday\, December 4 \nWhere: Through the old city \nHow much: Free

SUMMARY:Hugo Teixeira: Transience: Daredevils and Towering Webs
DESCRIPTION:Taipa Village Art Space is hosting a new exhibition\, Transience: Daredevils and Towering Webs presented by Luso-American photographic artist Hugo Teixeira.  Hugo showcases his unique collection of documentary photography featuring an iconographic Macau fixture – bamboo scaffolding on construction sites\, which is ubiquitous in the city as it undergoes rapid development. The construction workers (bamboo masters) are acting like spiders\, taking a risky job with courage to wrap the vertiginous towers with bamboo scaffoldings which look like spider webs. \n \nHugo introduces demanding photographic techniques of yesteryear\, exhibiting two types of images: ambrotypes – positive photographs on glass created using a wet-plate process – and cyanotypes – produced using a process that creates a cyan-blue print. To create these stunning images\, Hugo uses heavy view cameras and very carefully applied coatings of paper\, metal and glass\, offering viewers an awe-inspiring journey of discovery back to a 19th-century fascination that long predates the digital era. \nWhen: January 13 – March 31 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua dos Clerigos\, Taipa\, Macau \n+853 2857 6118\, www.taipavillagemacau.com \nOpening hours: 12:00pm – 8:00pm

SUMMARY:Hong Kong Ballet "The Nutcracker"
DESCRIPTION:The new year is up for a fresh start with an all-time adventure for families and dance lovers. Still buzzing with the season’s festive emotions\, Hong Kong Ballet is transporting us to the heart-warming atmosphere of The Nutcracker\, a classical ballet with a snowy magical touch\, filled with the glittering anticipation of unwrapping a gift. \nSet to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s immortal music\, this alluring piece will immerse us into Clara and Fritz’s journey to an astounding\, wonderful world\, ruled by a mischievous army of rats and toy soldiers\, mingling with other magical characters. The plot of this two act ballet sets off when Clara’s godfather offers the little girl a wooden nutcracker. At the stroke of midnight\, toys will come to life to reveal a hidden dreamland. By the end of the day\, will the siblings Clara and Fritz be able to help the Nutcracker topple the cruel Rat King to save his ballerina? Young choreographer Terence Kholer’s reinterpretation of the classic reflects a new visual approach without losing the timeless elegance and charm of the original story. The Australian joins hands with Hong Kong Ballet\, one of Asia’s top-notch classical dance companies\, whose accomplished interpreters have shown their class in Macao in various quality works\, namely when they performed Cinderella\, back in 2009. \n \nThis time\, they bring us yet another grand production\, a moment of awe and amusement with exquisite sets and smartly designed costumes. SUMMARY:Packing the Nature – Works by Ng Man Wai
DESCRIPTION:Staying in Germany for creation\, artist Ng Man Wai will return to Macau and hold her solo exhibition “Packing the Nature – Works by Ng Man Wai” in AFA Macau at 6:30pm on March 10 (Friday). This time a big installation will be set in the hall\, the artist will use plastic bags as media\, and fill them with light bulbs for decorating the whole space\, to express the relationship between human and the nature. \nPlastic bags are industrial products\, the use of artificial colors shows a tendency of anti-nature\, which is opposite to the natural colors. For the artist’s creation\, she uses multi-colors as a simile to show the colors are like the constructions that built by humans for their better lives. However\, those constructions must harm and change the environment. \nThrough Ng’s work in this exhibition\, she showed what she saw and felt in the forest\, such as her lament to the extinction of the nature\, the observations about the manmade has replaced the nature and the wishes of packing good things. So the exhibition title is called “Packing the Nature”. \nWhen: March 10 (Opening Day) \nOpen to public: March 11 to 26 \nIt is open daily except for Mondays from 12pm to 7pm. \nWhere: AFA Macau\, 4th Floor\, Art Garden\, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265\, Macau. \nHow much: Free \nFor enquiries\, contact +853 2836 6064 or visit www.afamacau.com. \n

SUMMARY:Art Basel ‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ by Hong Kong artist Kingsley Ng
DESCRIPTION:Kingsley Ng’s ‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ will turn two of Hong Kong’s iconic public trams into moving camera obscuras\, creating an altered reality and allowing passengers to experience Hong Kong in a new way – in reverse.
