SUMMARY:Guns and Flowers－Experimental Theatre Work
DESCRIPTION:This theater work depicts the situation of women in wartime and postwar times\, concerning the issues of War and Gender. It is not the dichotomy on women and men; however\, performers are both men and women on stage to show the humanity through their multiple roles\, especially the quality of female soldiers. Regardless of the past and present\, the people in wartime are treated as “consumable”. After the war\, women are even classified as “defective” and hardly could successfully integrate into family and society. Even if women are not in prison\, their physical and mental states are still “imprisoned” in dark corners of somewhere. \nThis experimental theater work is interdisciplinary with drama\, music and movements; in particular\, weaving handcraft delivers another layer of concept “Strings of Longing in Hands” into the play\, which inspired from the lack of resources during or after wars. People have to maintain their life by hard labor work or creating things from few materials left around. For women\, handicraft is no longer an interest or a hobby after wars; they must live on with this technique. Through which\, women could perhaps deliver happiness when giving to someone else\, or obtain some profit when selling to people. The least but the most important is that they could receive personal healing and enjoyment in the process of making. \nWhen: April 21 – 22\, 2017 \n8:00 to 9:00pm \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, No Cruzamento da Avenidado Coronel Mesquitacoma Avenida Almirante Lacerda Macau \nHow much: MOP $100 and Mop $80 for Students\, Senior Citizens and Disabled Person \nFor more information\, contact +852 853 0026 or email: oxwarehouse@gmail.commacau art \nVisit www.oxwarehouse.blogspot.com

SUMMARY:Macao Library Week
DESCRIPTION:To echo the ‘World Book Day’ on 23 April\, a series of activities have been organised jointly by Macao Public Library under the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) and the Macao Library & Information Management Association (MLIMA) and co-organised by Wu Yee Sun Library of the University of Macau since 2002 to promote reading throughout the community\, and now they have become annual events well-known in the local library sphere. \nThe activities of Macao Library Week 2017 will be themed “Reading and Images”\, aiming to widen the horizon of reading discuss the interaction between image and reading. What is the relationship between “see” and “read”? This seems to be a perplexing question\, however\, if we put ourselves in children’s shoes\, we will see how images arouse their curiosity and lead them to read spontaneously\, we easily realize that our life is filled with dialogues between images and reading. Sometimes it is through images that lead us to reading; other times\, it is reading itself that provokes a multiplicity of imagined scenes. Both are intrinsically linked\, turning into the source of our knowledge and life story. \nWhen: April 22 – 25 \nWhere: Old Court Building\, 459 Av. da Praia Grande\, Macau \nHow much: Free Admissions \nFor more information on the complete list of events visit\, www.library.gov.mo or contact +853 2837 7117

SUMMARY:Our Belle Époque Macao - The Works of Leo Fan
DESCRIPTION:Taking the blue sky and the white flowers as the fundamentals of the paintings by Leo Fan\, such recurring elements reflect the artist’s perceptions of the future. Fan’s allusions are also outlined through his ever-changing style of artistic presentation. The thematic subject of the works showcased in this exhibition is “face” where each and every portrait is embedded with a touching story. The traces of every single human being’s hard work in this unadorned world is marked. Some of them may achieve fame for themselves\, while others remain anonymous; their persistence and faith are beyond materialistic pursuits. It is precisely the passion of these individuals that Leo Fan glorifies as the “Honourable Souls”. \nWhen: 12:00pm – 7:00pm\, May 27 – June 25\, 2017 \nWhere: 2F Gallery of Ox Warehouse\, 87-97 Av. do Cel. SUMMARY:A Retrospective Exhibition of the Ferry Transport between Macao and the Islands
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-twentieth century\, the ferry vessel was an important transportation tool for passengers between the Macao peninsula and the two islands\, Taipa and Coloane. It is an integral part of Macao’s history and memories. \nThis exhibition unveils a number of collections for the first time\, such as the original documents “Stock Booklet of Un Fat Ferry between Macao and Coloane” and “Lease Contract of Motorboat” of the ferry operation company\, as well as other items related to the ferry vessels\, including photographs\, ferry tickets\, newspapers and commemorative publications\, among others. \nIn the exhibition\, interactive electronic screens are also available to introduce “The Evolution of Macao’s Topography”\, which covers the territory’s coastlines and vessel routes from different eras. Meanwhile\, video excerpts of interviews with several old residents are screened to share their stories in taking ferry vessels\, revealing the unique rustic simplicity of this small city. In addition\, visitors can enjoy a 3D virtual ferry ride based on the ferry model “Kuong Kong”. \n \nThrough various forms of exhibits such as precious documents\, images\, and interview videos\, the exhibition shows social changes that occurred in Macao\, making available a replenishment for future studies on maritime traffic. SUMMARY:Representing Women through MAM Collection – 19th and 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:*The Macao Museum of Art is temporarily closed until further notice due to having been affected by Typhoon Hato.* \nDuring the 19th century and 20th century\, if a woman wanted to succeed as a professional artist anywhere in the world\, she would have to circumvent gender-specific artistic and social hierarchies. While the access to the profession was limited\, women had always been an incredible source of inspiration for male artists who usually portrayed them within the exact roles they were supposed to play: goddess\, mothers\, servants or concubines. \nThe exhibition is organized in four sections: ‘A Western Tradition in Macao – 19th Century’\, ‘Views of Europeans on China – Late 19th Century’\, ‘Calendars and Posters – Early 20th Century’ and ‘Propaganda – Mid 20th Century’. The works presented use different media such as oil paintings\, drawings\, watercolors\, gouache\, posters\, and sculptures. Art served as a way to reinforce the values about the role of women\, but it also served to express alternative views. \nWhen: June 30-December 10\, 2017 \nWhere: 3rd floor\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, visit www.mam.gov.mo

DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Taipa Village Cultural Association proudly presents local accomplished artist Tong Chong’s wooden sculpture exhibition “Restless Nature”. \nHe unveils his masterpiece artworks to the public\, showcasing Tong Chong’s new collection with plywood technique and reflects the outcome of his three years of meticulous research on this subject of sculpting with plywood. In this new series of sculptures\, each piece took at least four to six months to finish due to gluing procedures\, whilst the sculpting itself is a process which requires physical and psychological stamina that cannot be taken lightly. \nThis tells us about Chong’s character\, as it is embodied in each piece: the perseverance to achieve his goals and a restless soul eager to evolve and perfect his technical skills. \nWhen: July 5 – September 6\, 2017 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua dos Clerigos\, Taipa\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more details\, contact +853 2857 6118 or visit www.taipavillagemacau.com

SUMMARY:The Beginner’s Mind – Works by AFA Founders
DESCRIPTION:AFA is proud to announce the opening ceremony of “The Beginner’s Mind – Works by AFA Founders” that will be held at Tak Chun Macau Art Garden at 6:30pm on August 25. To mark the 10th anniversary special\, the participating artists are also the founders of AFA\, and they are Bianca Lei\, James Chu\, Konstantin Bessmertny\, Noah Ng Fong Chao\, and Tong Chong respectively. Works from paintings\, videos to mixed media will be showcased. The exhibition is curated with the theme of “Beginners’ Mind”. The term comes from a Buddhist classic text of the Avatamsaka Sutra: The very beginning mind itself is the most accomplished mind of true enlightenment”. It is oftentimes the best mind but the most difficult mind to attain. As participating artists have witnessed the growth of AFA throughout the past 10 years\, the exhibition seeks to revisit the original intention when AFA was founded. In reflection\, AFA is ready to carry on its mission and step into a new page. \n \nWhen: August 26–September 17\, 2017 \nWhere: AFA Art for All Macau\, Art Garden\, 265 Av. SUMMARY:The Summer is Gone
DESCRIPTION:Marked as the Best Feature Film and the Best New Performer at the 53rd Golden Horse Award 2016\, don’t miss “The Summer is Gone” at Cinematheque-Passion. \nStrongly influenced by “The 400 Blows”\, first-time director Zhang Dalei offers a beautifully-shot\, black and white drama\, unfolding his semi-autobiographical reminiscence of childhood and his melancholic ode about the end of an era. Set in the early 1990s\, a 12-year-old boy spends his summer vacation in an Inner Mongolia town\, where his father\, a worker in a state-owned film studio\, is about to be laid off because of privatization. Nostalgic and delicate emotions elegantly infuse careful compositions with naturalism. \nWhen: August 29–31\, 2017 \nWhere: Cinematheque-Passion\, 13 Travessa Da Paixao\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 \nFor more details\, contact +853 2852 2585\, www.facebook.com/events
