SUMMARY:Life Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The concept of “Life”\, a long-standing subject in philosophy with various ideas being continuously advocated by philosophers throughout the history of human civilization\, is the most crucial theme in myths\, religions and theories. The understanding of Life influences people’s interpretation of life and their perspectives on society\, culture\, social norm\, power structure\, identity\, self-identification and so on. The concept of Life is the root of all issues. Each individual takes their entire life in quest of their own meaning of “Life”. Its meaning not only lives in the narrative of history and religion\, but also resides in our mind\, awaiting intellectual collision and discourse. \nPhotographers in the “Life” photography exhibition use photographs as carriers to embody their understanding of life and death. In place of expounding ideas by verbose writing\, the photographers deliver the notion by creating visual tension in their photographs. They anticipate an open “debate” with every exhibitor and ask questions regarding Life to all of us. Through this exhibition\, Lifehope Caritas Macau looks forward to starting a dialogue that transcends space with all of you. \nWhen: July 23–November\, 2019 \nWhere: Café Philo\, Rui Cunha Foundation Gallery\, Tap Seac Square\, M Dimensions\, A Porta da Arte\, Luís de Camões Garden\, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden\, Café Voyage \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:Kirill Gerstein and The Macao Orchestra: Macao Orchestra Season Closing Concert
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Romanticism\, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra\, Lu Jia\, joins hands with renowned pianist Kirill Gerstein to present the fabulous “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”\, in a wonderful dialogue between two generations of piano virtuosos. In the second part of the concert\, Macao Orchestra will perform Schubert’s “Ninth Symphony”\, a work that embodies the maintenance and and the rebirth of the classical tradition in the Romantic period. A much-anticipated performance! \nThe concert features Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major\, “The Great”. Rachmaninoff offers a wonderful dialogue between two generations of virtuoso piano masters and Schubert’s work embodied the continuation and renaissance of the classical tradition in the romantic period and the peak of poetry and imagination in Schubert’s late works. \nThe Russian-born American pianist\, Kirill Gerstein\, attended one of Russia’s special music schools for gifted children and taught himself to play jazz by listening to his parents’ extensive record collection. He came to the USA at 14 to continue his studies in jazz piano as the youngest student ever to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. However\, he also continued working on the classical piano repertoire. Following his second summer at the Boston University program at Tanglewood\, he decided to focus mainly on classical music and moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music\, where he studied with Solomon Mikowsky and earned Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees. He continued his studies with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid and Ferenc Rados in Budapest. Among his teachers were Alexis Weissenberg. Gerstein was awarded First Prize at the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv\, received a 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award\, and was chosen as Carnegie Hall’s “Rising Star” for the 2005-2006 season. \nKirill Gerstein is one of today’s most intriguing young musicians. His masterful technique\, musical curiosity\, and probing interpretations have led to explorations of classical music and jazz\, advanced degrees by the age of 20\, a professorship in piano by the age of 27\, and a full performance schedule at the world’s major music centers and festivals. \nWhen: Saturday\, 8:00pm\, July 27\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $150–400 \nFor ticketing\, please visit www.macauticket.com \nFor more information\, check the event’s website \n\nKirill Gerstein and The Macao Orchestra: Macao Orchestra Season Closing Concert is part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao.\nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike. \n\nKirill Gerstein and The Macao Orchestra: Macao Orchestra Season Closing Concert

SUMMARY:Bathing in the Spring Breeze – Paintings by Liu Mengkuan
DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Eagle\, 2017\, Colour on paper with frame) \nThe Macao Museum of Art presents Bathing in the Spring Breeze – Paintings by Liu Mengkuan\, an art exhibition open to public until August 25\, 2019. The Lingnan School of painting\, led by master artists Gao Jianfu\, Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren\, has experienced different aesthetic developments in Guangdong\, Hong Kong and Macau since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In the 1960s and 1970s\, aspiring artists in Guangzhou absorbed the stylistic vocabularies of Realism from art academies on top of the revolutionary spirit they had inherited from the Lingnan School of painting. With this they formed a painting style that both reflected the times and breathed vigorous life into their work. \nIn Hong Kong and Macau\, artists continued to ‘integrate Chinese and Western techniques’ to help Chinese art catch up with the times. At that time\, master artist Deng Fen\, an advocate of preserving Chinese painting characteristics and a key founder of the Guihai Painting Cooperative (later Guangdong Chinese Painting Research Society)\, opposed random Chinese and Western integration. Another master named Yang Shanshen\, who at a young age studied under Gao Jianfu and later in life befriended Deng Fen\, spent much time contemplating the state of modern Chinese painting. At the end of the 1970s\, Yang began to establish a style and aesthetics in which ‘richness is seen in dry\, withered ink strokes’ that would later influence Liu Mengkuan\, who studied under Yang in 1977. \nBorn in Hong Kong in 1950\, Liu Mengkuan is a founding member of ‘Xiang Gang Mei Xie’ (Hong Kong Art Association)\, and president of the Mu Feng Art Club. He graduated from the Wah Yan College\, Kowloon\, and in 1977 began studying under Yang Shanshen\, a second-generation master of the Lingnan School. In 1983\, Liu decided to be a full-time painter\, becoming an active member of the third generation of the Lingnan School. In 1986\, he hosted his first solo exhibition at the American Library in Hong Kong\, followed by a second solo at the Museum Luís de Camões in Macau in 1987. Over the years\, he has exhibited around the world\, including in Hong Kong\, Macau\, Taiwan\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, and Martinique in Central America\, as well as at galleries in Tokyo\, Yokohama\, Fujisawa and Nara\, in Japan. Since 2000\, he has held solo exhibitions in several cities in Mainland China\, including Jiangmen and Zhongshan in Guangdong and Wuzhou in Guangxi. In 2017\, his work was selected to the international exhibition Ink Global in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to the motherland. \nWhen: July 27–August 25\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official page \nRed Cliff Legend\, 2016 (Colour on paper with frame)

SUMMARY:Art Macao: "Journey" Exhibition at Studio City Macau
DESCRIPTION:Continuing the momentum of Art Macao\, Melco presents “Journey”\, a diverse selection of works inspired by the highly varied culture of anime. Forming part of Melco’s contribution to Art Macao: International Art Exhibition\, this unique exhibition is a visual adventure that explores the evolution of contemporary Japanese anime from its beginnings rooted in ukiyo-e\, the traditional art of Japanese woodblock print and painting. \nThe visual references of anime abound in Japan and beyond are seen as a visual signature of the nation.  Both the contemporary genres of anime and manga can trace their roots and influences in the woodblock art form of ukiyo-e and its Edo period heroes. Today\, its influences can be readily identified in such varying media as computer games\, toy culture\, and the work of multimedia artists around the world. This first-of-a-kind exhibition for Studio City Macau includes such highlights as Amanami Animated by MAP Office\, Mr Waterloo by Rainbo\, Waves in Time by Southbend\, Blingee by Han Yanjuan\, and the “Modern Art of Floating World” collection by Horihiro Mitomo and Ukiyoemon. \nAmanami Animated \nAmanami Animated is a contemporary animated drawing from the roots of the Edo period in Japan\, from ukiyo-e\, and from the Japanese contemporary expression of the history\, culture and traditions of the ama-san free divers who work in the Bay of Ise in Japan. This animation revisits and reimagines the patterns of the genre ukiyo-e\, not as a technique\, but as a fictional ethnographic representation of the coastal landscape during the Edo period. \nThe story is divided into eight scenes\, framed by a screen and defined by three main tableaux–water (blue)\, land (green)\, and home (yellow). The eight panels depict scenes derived from specific sets of narratives\, which are combined with a collection of myths\, beliefs and dreams that were collected by the artists during many trips to Japan. In this contemporary interpretation of the ukiyo-e\, the numerous drawing layers made by a computer replaces the traditional wood block and colored print processes. \nIn addition to “Journey”\, the installation of vibrant activations and cartoon characters designed by Hiroshi Yoshii has transformed Studio City Macau’s main lobby into an exciting world of Japanese anime. A series of interactive anime experiences are available for guests throughout the property as well! \nWhen: August 1–November\, 2019 \nWhere: Studio City Macau\, Estrada do Istmo\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here \n\n“Journey” Exhibition at Studio City Macau is part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao. \nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike.

SUMMARY:Macau International Mime Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:Many people may still associate “mime” to silent performers with white painted faces\, wearing black and white striped costumes telling stories with body movements. In fact\, artists around the world have been putting new elements into “mime”\, with the aid of rich visual-audio effects turning them into dynamic physical performances. Now\, “mime” just means performances that do not require scripts or even language. The Macau International Mime Festival 2019\, organized by CANU Theatre\, invited groups from all over the world to present spectacular performances at the Black Box Theatre in the Old Court Building and at the Mount Fortress Park. The audience will enjoy diverse performances featuring clowns\, marionettes\, magic\, pantomime and lighting\, among others. Humorous\, poetic and hilarious pieces will be performed one after another. Regardless of gender or age\, anyone can participate in these performances with joy in a relaxed environment. \nIn addition to the mime performances\, master classes and movie screenings will be held\, allowing the audience to enter the world of the great masters. Internationally renowned clown master Philippe Gaulier from France is coming to Macau again to hold a five-day master class\, exploring the artistic world of the “Neutral Mask” and of the Italian commedia dell’arte with participants. Furthermore\, there are also workshops for adults and children. Besides\, there will be a mime movie screening at the Cinematheque．Passion too. If you are feeling a little low\, come to the Black Box Theatre\, be thoroughly entertained and turn that frown upside down! \nThere is a Shakkalo Physical Theater workshop\, which includes basic techniques of modern mime and simple body expression in physical theater. You will learn the secrets of mime illusion and character building. With the help of your imagination\, Shakkalo will guide you to “dive into water”\, “touch the sand” or “walk in the clouds”. Through various exercises you will learn how with your body and your ideas\, you can create anything out of nothing! During Edi’s French Pantomime workshop\, you will learn the basics of pantomime. SUMMARY:"Blue Mind Map"- Works by Io Weng Si
DESCRIPTION:Life is filled with colors. At different stages in our life\, we have different preferences for colors. It is especially appropriate to use infinite colors to describe the complexity and ever-changing emotions of life. According to Io Weng Si’s description\, the “blue” color represents her feelings of depression and dimness in the face of adversity. The “blue” color is not an expression confined on the surface level\, but it also describes the state when the emotion goes to the dark abyss\, after reflection and remorse\, there is a faint light at the bottom\, and the deep “blue” is slowly illuminated by a gleam\, which is the color of warmth\, forgiveness and deep reflection. \nIo Weng Si has borrowed the poem “Recipe for Making the Color Blue” of the Portuguese poet Nuno Júdice as a blueprint. Looking for the concept of “blue” formula\, she uses natural materials such as rice pulp and rice paper\, taking the land of Macau as the outline\, reorganizing it\, creating and sketching these semi-abstract mood- oriented maps with emotions. In this process of creation\, she said\, that water\, temperature and sunshine are especially important\, as if the earth has grown rice to nourish the people. \nThe pulp is made of rice\, its color is white\, with a bit of turbidity\, but is still not in a pure white state. It is a stage in her pursuit of spiritual purification. And rice paper is like the human heart and the body’s cell membrane\, although fragile and transparent\, it protects the core of life (nuclei). While reinterpreting these blueprints of mind\, she is also in a process of re-considering the illusory ideas and thoughts\, thus bringing out the light of wisdom. \nWhen: August 8–September 13\, 2019 \nWhere: AFA Macau\, Tak Chun Macau Art Garden\,265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau\nMacau. \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2836 6064 or send an email to info@afamacau.com

SUMMARY:4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque．Passion teams up with Comuna de Han-Ian to present the 4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival\,  from August 10 to 31. The highly anticipated festival opens with documentary gem Let’s Get Lost (newly restored version)\, revealing the turbulent life and spellbinding music of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. The Director-in-Focus session surely impresses with a gripping portfolio of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, who will visit Macau and share his artistic methods and anecdotes. Aiming to create a dialogue with the city\, the festival puts together new releases on this 20th anniversary of Macau’s handover under two themes–The Collective and Memories. The releases will also be Hong Kong and Macau premieres. Accompanying the exciting programme are talks and events. \n“Prince of Cool” Chet Baker lives in the fond memory of jazz fans worldwide. His beautiful face and deep voice add a heart-breaking quality. On creating this documentary\, Bruce Weber comments\, “Everybody has a story about Chet Baker…I made this film about Chet because I had my own story about him.” A post-screening session with music expert Anson Ng brings us an hour of jazz and talk about this legend. \nDirector-in-Focus: Sergey Dvortsevoy’s session features six remarkable works of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, charting his creative about-face from observational documentaries–Paradise\, Bread Day\, Highway and In The Dark–to the impressive features\, Tulpan (2008) and Ayka (2018). He tends to apply long takes and minimal narration and action in an honest and humorous way. Dvortsevoy will also bring his creative vision in a masterclass for Macau filmmakers and audience. \n \nThe Collective and Memories manifest in a programme of Hong Kong-and-Macau premieres. The Collective investigates how the self is constructed in a world where the Internet reigns. Los Reyes looks at a community from the perspective of two street dogs. Buddy touches upon the emotional therapy animals can offer humans. Honeyland follows the life of one of the last female beekeepers in Europe for three years. Director Hassan Fazili and his family are on the run after the Taliban put out a call for his death. He records his flight with three mobile phones and makes Midnight Traveler. \nSearching Eva shows how Eva publishes her thoughts online with her new identity–a sexual worker\, model\, feminist and writer. Edited out of several hundred hours of vloggers’ self-broadcast footage\, Present.Perfect. reveals the power of the Internet over individuals. Treasure Island follows a group of people who attempt to escape from reality in a resort island. Memories tells touching tales of individuals. A few weeks ago\, music fans worldwide bid farewell to the father of Bossa Nova\, João Gilberto. Where Are You\, João Gilberto? tries to fulfil the dream of seeing the musician by following his life and music. \nThree Identical Strangers unveils dark scientific secrets by reuniting triplet brothers who were separated at birth. Minding the Gap sympathetically follows three young skateboarders’ experiences as they enter adulthood. Italian model-turned-feminist Benedetta Barzini refuses to be gazed at and her son tries to picture her different selves in The Disappearance of My Mother. Another Day of Life is a collaboration between Spanish director Raúl de la Fuente and Polish animator Damian Nenow\, transporting the audience back to ambitious Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński’s first-hand updates on the Angolan Civil War. Photographer Khalik Allah depicts the rural and urban landscape and people of his mother’s country in\, Jamaica in Black Mother. In The Best Thing You Can Do With Your Life\, Zita Erffa records the life of her brother\, who she has not seen for eight years\, in the controversial Legionary of Christ. \nJonas Mekas\, the Godfather of American avant-garde cinema\, passed away earlier this year. With his Bolex 16mm camera\, Mekas illustrates his journey in New York as an outsider and his return to Lithuania\, to meet his friends in Europe again in Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania. Award-winning The Act of Killing surrealistically scrutinizes the Indonesian mass killing of communists in 1965 Indonesia by recording the perpetrators re-enacting the incident. The director’s cut version will be shown in two screenings. Indonesian history expert George Young will give a pre-screening talk on the historical background of this piece. \nWhen: August 10–31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2585 or check their website
