SUMMARY:2020 ARTFEM Women Artists International Biennial of Macau
DESCRIPTION:As the only women artist international biennial\, ARTFEM targets to contribute to greater visibility of women artists in the contemporary world and to a (re)discovery of the art of women who have played a socially and culturally significant role\, gearing local arts towards international standards and bringing more dynamic and plentiful artistic experiences to the public and tourists. The work by women artists is increasingly showcased internationally; other Biennales of the past also had the merit to expose the need for female institutional representation\, even if these outstanding projects did not survive the test of time. ARTFEM is devoted to being an exception\, by maintaining the project in a city renowned as the location of important international events. \nFollowing the success of ARTFEM 2018\, with over 100 works from established and emerging artists from the five continents\, ARTFEM 2020 features 142 works created between 2018 and 2020 by 98 women from 22 countries who are working actively as artists. 13 of the participating artists are from China\, 16 from Portugal\, 31 from Macau\, seven hail from Hong Kong\, two from South Korea\, one from Japan\, but also from Indonesia\, France\, Spain\, the US\, Canada\, and many others. \nThis multimedia show displays painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, installation\, drawings\, silkscreen on diverse media\, video\, and photography. The exhibition aims to bring to the fore urgent discourses on the environment\, including its protection or devastation\, the relationship of humanity with nature\, while containing a localizing “gaze” onto social aspects that result from its location in Macao SAR\, the Pearl River Delta Region and the COVID-19 pandemic crisis that affected the world since December 2019. \nThe curatorial team dispersed the show in the Macau Peninsula to allow a “biennale feeling” to its viewers\, who wander around town while searching for artworks. While the curatorial intention considered occupying and intervening in the public space\, the COVID-19 crisis has provoked that the exhibitions happen solely indoors. \nARTFEM’s curatorial team is comprised of Arch. Carlos Marreiros\, President of ARTFEM Organizing Committee and Head Curator for this edition\, and co-curated by China-based Angela Li\, who brings a Chinese-focus; the Macau-based duo Alice Kok and James Chu\, who selected local Macau artists as well as Hong Kong ones\, and Leonor Veiga\, a Macau SAR Permanent Resident who curated\, along with Carlos Marreiros the international selection of artists. In the meantime\, renowned Chinese artist Xiang Jing and Macau artist Un Chi Iam are the Godmothers of 2020 ARTFEM. \n2020 ARTFEM Women Artists International Biennial of Macau is open on September 30th until December 13th\, 2020\, and will be held in four separate art spaces in Macau\, including Albergue SCM\, Former Municipal Cattle Stable\, Galeria Lisboa\, and Orient Foundation with a mix of seminars\, workshops\, and tours\, so to encourage the participation of artists\, public and tourists. The admission is free. \nWhen: September 30–December 13\, 2020 \nWhere: Gallery A2\, Albergue SCM\, 8 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page\, send an email to creativealbergue@gmail.com or call +853 2852 2550\, +853 2852 3205 \nArtist Xiang Jing

SUMMARY:Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion
DESCRIPTION:In order to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival\, the “Performance to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion”\, is held on October 1\, 2020. \nThe ethnic dance drama Awakening Lion reflects a spiritual “awakening” materialized in the figure of the “lion”\, narrating the story of two teenage lion dance dancers who achieve a self-awakening and growth when making various life decisions\, manifesting the spirit of the Chinese nation–fighting bravely for honor and strength. The drama integrates the essence of Lingnan culture\, including Southern Fist (Nanquan)\, Southern Lion Dance (Nanshi)\, and woodblock narrative singing\, seeking to pass on and promote the intangible cultural heritage of the Lingnan region. \nThe drama presents the lion’s movements in a vivid manner by integrating the horse-riding stance from the Southern Fist and the acrobatics unique to lion dance into the performance. Produced over three years\, the dance drama achieves bold innovations in dance\, stage design\, lighting\, music\, and costume\, and is highly acclaimed by the audience. \nAdhering to the development concept of “a repertoire\, talent\, and market-oriented theatre”\, the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre gathers an array of artistic talent and has produced and staged a wide range of excellent works. Amongst their productions\, the Awakening Lion has received many awards\, including the “11th Lotus Awards” for Chinese Dance – Dance Drama Category in 2018. \nWhen: 7:30pm\, Thursday\, October 1\, 2020 \nWhere: Grand Auditorium\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $100–200 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 8394 3721 and for ticketing\, call +853 2855 5555 \n*Tickets can be purchased from September 3 onwards. SUMMARY:The 5th Macau International Lantern Festival
DESCRIPTION:The fifth edition of the Macau International Lantern Festival takes on an even more meaningful for locals and visitors alike as it offers everyone the opportunity to celebrate two momentous holidays together – National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival. Renowned Macanese architect and artist\, Carlos Marreiros\, has created more than 20 monumental art installations themed as “Tomorrow Will be Better” and “Happy Together” to light up the skies of Macau all throughout the month of October. \nOn the Waterfront Promenade of One Central Macau\, there are six giant luminous lantern sculptures\, entitled “Happy Together: Macau Lights Up in Joy and Hope”\, crafted in the shapes of vintage toys to evoke a heartwarming sense of nostalgia. Lanterns such as the ‘Happy Clown Toy’\, ‘Robot Darling’\, ‘Childhood Soldier of Fortune’\, and ‘Love Galo’ are reinterpreting classic toys and transforming the Waterfront Promenade into a lively children’s playground. These lantern sculptures not only serve as a reminder of joyful childhood dreams\, but also symbolise a bright future that everyone can heartily look forward to. \n \nOn the Lakeside Promenade of Wynn Macau\, 17 butterfly and hot air balloon lantern sculptures entitled “Wynn Butterfly Story” are on display. The series of sculptures are reminiscent of flying butterflies dancing among flowers together with hot air balloons\, giving people of all ages an opportunity to celebrate both the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day under the beautiful Mid-Autumn moonlight. Designed with sustainability in mind\, Wynn is using solar power to light up all of the gorgeous lanterns along the Lakeside Promenade by Wynn Macau. Wynn has also once again collaborated with renowned architect and artist Carlos Marreiros and invited award-winning students from the “Wynn Cup – Macau Primary School Student National Education Drawing Competition” to create lantern designs this year. Each brush stroke expresses meaningful aspirations and welcome both National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival. \nDrawing inspiration from the “Wynn Butterfly Story” lantern display at the Lakeside Promenade by Wynn Macau\, Café Esplanada and Buns & Bubbles are pleased to present special “Butterfly Story” delicacies that feature colorful butterflies and hot air balloons for locals and visitors to enjoy throughout the Lantern Festival. \nWhen: October 1–31\, 2020 \nWhere: Macau International Lantern Festival – Waterfront Promenade of One Central Macau\, Avenida de Sagres\, Nape\, Macau and Lakeside Promenade of Wynn Macau\, Rua Cidade de Sintra\, Macau \nThemed afternoon tea – Café Esplanada\, Wynn Macau\, Rua Cidade de Sintra\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission

SUMMARY:We Are (Q)Here
DESCRIPTION:Comuna de Pedra has organized a set of three shows happening on different nights at different venues to highlight some of society’s minorities. “Stories of the oppressed shine with pride!”\, the organizers claim. This is not merely a single story or performance but multiple stories and performances happening at the same time in different districts. \n“With the development of society\, we have the chance to listen to more stories of these minorities. However\, due to an excess of information in the modern world\, people do not have enough time to digest and thereby only see the surface\, which leads to more labeling. Often times\, we think critically without truly or deeply understand things. During this performance\, we hope to create a private space for the majority group to really listen and understand these stories of the minority groups. These young people have all gone through tough times. Because of being different and not fulfilling the standards and expectations of the majority\, they are negatively labeled and rejected by the society and even their families.”\, Comuna de Pedra says. \nThe plays were created by Wong Weng Chon\, directed by Zé\, and are performed by Oscar Cheong\, Chan Ka Hou\, Tam Suk Ha\, Loretta Lou\, Bobby Leong\, Si Tou Wai Wa\, Chao Ka Wang\, and Un Iat Hou. The shows are suitable for people aged 16 and above. \nWhen: 7:30pm\, 8:30pm and 9:30pm\, Thursday–Sunday\, October 8–11\, 2020 \nWhere: Mico Bar\, 78A Rua de Tomás Vieira\, Macau\, Terra Drip Bar\, 364 R. 1 de Maio\, Macau and Live Music Association\, 50 Avenida do Coronel Mesquita\, San Mei Industrial Building 11B/F\, Macau \nHow much: Prices range from MOP $170–700 (bundle tickets) \nFor more information\, send an email to the organizer at comunadepedra@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:50 degrees N • Watercolour Exhibition by Kim Mok
DESCRIPTION:At this exhibition\, the artist\, Kim Mok\, displays more than twenty watercolor works\, which record some of the scenes she saw while traveling. The works also depict some old streets and narrow alleys in Macau and show her feelings for those old buildings that have disappeared. Last year\, she chose to return to the city where she lived\, Brighton\, and hold her first solo exhibition. Her purpose is to take Brighton as a starting point for her art exhibition. This time\, she wants to continue this exhibition in Macau. In addition\, to show the public scenes that she recorded during her travel\, she also hopes to take this opportunity to promote watercolor art and let more people get to know her and her works. \nTired of an immutable life? Hate that you always go the same way and make the same mistakes? A trip away challenges your own habits and opens up your perspective and flexibility in looking at things. It lets you temporarily break out of that boring routine\, re-plan your own direction\, and inject new energy into your future”\, the exhibition’s curator explains. \nKim Mok was born and grew up in Macau. She obtained a master’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Saint Joseph and a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts of Macao Polytechnic Institute. She has loved painting since she was a child. She has a special fondness for watercolor art and has explored in the field of watercolour for many years. \nDuring the past decade\, she participated actively in painting exhibitions organized by art organizations and also in public painting competitions in Macau\, she has won various awards from these painting competitions. In order to focus on research and improve her watercolor technique\, she gave up her job four years ago and went to the UK to study and travel to broaden her horizons. During her studies\, she often went to art galleries to practice painting with local artists and exchange painting techniques. She also traveled extensively to various European countries to learn about the cultural history and customs of people in different countries\, in order to combine the bits and pieces of the journey into a personal exhibition. \nWhen: October 10–30\, 2020 \nWhere: Green Houses\, 55-57 Avenida Coronel Mesquita Road\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Art Power Jamming – Friendship Chapter: “Taste in City” by Vanda Chan
DESCRIPTION:Ark-Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents an art program entitled “Art Power Jamming”\, under the theme of “Friendship Chapter”. The program\, which is sponsored by the Macao Foundation\, and supported by the Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District and 10 Fantasia\, features seven unique shows presented by six Macau artists (members of AAMA) with diverse backgrounds. The exhibition series runs from August 2020 until July 2021. \nVanda is a Macau designer\, illustrator\, and freelance painter. Most of her creative inspiration comes from people\, animals\, and interesting things in her daily life\, hoping to explore new ideas to evoke her creativity. \n“With the rapid development of the city where Chinese and Western cultures co-exist\, you will encounter different kinds of small shops hidden in the corners of the city. They are still working hard to create a unique taste of this city. From a child to growing up to work in this society\, I visit some small shops and eateries occasionally. It might be caused by my childhood taste preference\, KOLs’ recommendation\, time limitation which makes me eat simply\, or evoking the nostalgic taste or remembrance of someone! Perhaps the city has lost its nostalgic flavor. Whether there is still human touch or not\, I still love to savor the unique taste of this city\,” the artist explains. \nWhen: October 10–November 27\, 2020 \nWhere: Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District\, 10 Fantasia\, 10 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:"Into The Light" – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong
DESCRIPTION:“Into The Light – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong” is Macau artist Sisi Wong’s solo exhibition to take place in AFA Macau. Organized by the Macau Art For All Society\, this showcase is part of the “New Generation．New Media” – Art Exhibition Series. Sisi Wong was born in Macau and moved to Taiwan when her childhood. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Fine Art Department from the National Taiwan University of Arts\, majoring in mixed media. She now lives in Macau and engages in visual art education. \nHer type of creation is mainly photography\, image installation\, and video art\, combining “light”\, “image” and “visual perception” as the main axis of creation\, looking for the essence of the “consciousness”; and “self-existence”; belonging to the individual in the photographic vocabulary. The solo exhibition “Into The Light”; was started by the work “Pantheon”; shot in Rome\, which shows that she is trying to express herself while looking back to the art history of light by taking the physical and mental inspiration from this majestic historical building. The entire work focuses on the “oculus”; (Latin for “eye”) on the huge dome\, which is the only light source of the entire building\, like the eye of God\, which clearly declares the sacredness of light and its connection with vision. \nWhen: October 11–November 6\, 2020 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Stories of the Sea – The Sixth Chapter at The Manor
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Dover sole\, couscous and tarragon oil\, celeriac and champagne sauce \nThe latest evolution of The Manor’s ocean-inspired special dinner menu has arrived with the release of “Stories of the Sea – The Sixth Chapter” featuring eight courses showcasing the finest selection of seafood sourced from the oceans around the world. Executive Sous Chef Michele Dell’Aquila has evolved the menu to highlight the best flavors of the season which are then matched to the highest quality seafood including the renowned Boston lobster\, bluefin tuna and Dover sole. \nTo start\, Boston lobster is served alongside earthy flavors such as smoked artichoke heart\, black truffle\, and asparagus\, giving contrast to the inherent richness and sweetness of the lobster. An intensely rich onion soup with oyster using sweet onions from Auxonne in France follows\, garnished with the exclusive Sevruga caviar\, with the strong sea flavors of the oyster and the caviar balanced by the sweetness of the onions. \nBoston Lobster with smoked artichoke\, black truffle\, and asparagus \nSucculent bluefin tuna from Balfegó Spain is dressed with taggiasche olive and anchovy pesto sauce and paired with handmade Vesuvius pasta and the classic cooler-climate Italian comfort food–stracciatella–to balance the creamy taste of the tuna. The star of this Stories of the Sea menu is the tender and sweet flavored Dover sole\, served with mushroom\, Dijon mustard\, and truffle to highlight its buttery flavor and tender texture\, and served with creamed celeriac\, couscous\, and an indulgent champagne sauce with a drizzle of tarragon oil. \nThe perfect dinner can be found with dessert Il Quadro–that features a bitter chocolate mousse with crumbly chestnut and tangy persimmon to balance the sweetness. The Stories of the Sea – The Sixth Chapter can be elevated further with an optional wine pairing that features a carefully selected range of premium wines from France and Italy\, match perfectly with ocean flavors. \nWhen: 6:00pm–11:00pm\, From now until December 30\, 2020 \n(Not available between December 21 and 25 December\, 2020) \nWhere: The Manor\, The St. Regis Macao\, The Londoner Macao\, Estrada do Istmo\, s/n\, Cotai \nHow much: MOP $888 per person\, MOP $1\,288 per person with the paired wine package \nFor more information and bookings\, call +853 2882 8898 or send email to themanor.macao@stregis.com \nIl Quadro\, bitter chocolate\, chestnut\, and persimmon
