SUMMARY:5th German Film Festival – KINO Macao 2020
DESCRIPTION:CUT Co. Ltd. partners with Goethe-Institut Hong Kong for the fifth time to present the popular German Film Festival – KINO Macau. Since the introduction to Macau by CUT in 2016\, the German Film Festival has gained popularity over the years and attracted a large turnout. \nKINO Macao\, on the other hand\, could continue to take place in physical form based on the situation of the city\, featuring a total of 12 outstanding German films\, six of which are the newest works covering a variety of topics. From an urban tale with stunning visuals to a refreshing German musical to a purposeful and powerful children’s film\, the films this year also pay attention to social and historical issues. \nThe program of KINO Macao 2020 continues to comprise the Director-in-Focus session\, which presents three major films of Margarethe von Trotta in different eras\, one of the significant directors and the only female auteur during the New German Cinema. There is also Wim Wenders 75 – Special Screening session this year\, presenting the documentary Desperado for the 75th birthday of the director and Wenders’ Faraway\, So Close!\, which won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Talks and post-screening sharing sessions are also highlights of KINO Macao 2020. \nOpening Film: Asia Premiere of Biography Work About Rainer Werner Fassbinder \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 highlights the works of three film masters in the New German Cinema\, including Margarethe von Trotta\, Wim Wenders\, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The opening film of the festival is Enfant Terrible directed by Oskar Roehler\, which focuses on the career of Fassbinder\, from his debut feature film Lover Is Colder Than Death in 1969 to the powerful\, vulgar-style Querelle in 1982 to his death at the age of 37. This movie legend once said\, “I don’t throw bombs\, I make films.” \nIn a life span of 37 years and a film career spanning over 13 years\, the number of Fassbinder’s works totaled 44\, including three short films\, a television series of five episodes\, and the 14-part Berlin Alexanderplatz. Whether the audiences watched his works at the Director-in-Focus session in KINO Macao 2018\, they could still know more about this inspiring film talent from another perspective this time. What is also thrilling is the screening of Enfant Terrible in Macao marks the Asia premiere of the film after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. \n \n“Rise Up! Women!” Director-in-Focus Session: Margarethe von Trotta \nInfluenced by the French New Wave\, the New German Cinema\, during the period between the 1960s and 1980s\, saw the emergence of numerous acclaimed directors. The most exceptional female director from this batch is Margarethe von Trotta\, who has started independent productions since the 1970s. Aged 78 now\, she has written and directed over 10 films\, including Marianne and Juliane (1981)\, Rosa Luxemburg (1986)\, Rosenstrasse (2003)\, and Hannah Arendt (2012)\, which are all highlights of the German cinema and showcase her distinctive auteur style. \nThe images of each female character in her works do not only break conventional gender stereotypes but are also exquisitely crafted to showcase the female aesthetics in the spiritual\, intellectual\, and independent aspects. The main visual design of KINO Macao 2020 is inspired by her masterpiece Rosa Luxemburg\, depicting the title character as a rose in pursuit of free will and freedom albeit hardship. Coincidentally\, many movies in KINO Macao 2020 are based on a female perspective\, from kids to the elderly\, from the past to the present\, each illustrating visionary and powerful women–perseverant\, intellectual\, and unique. \nWide Array of Outreach Activities to Enhance Depth and Scope \nApart from Cinema Alegria\, KINO Macao 2020 also takes place at Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, which boasts a serene environment for the screening of four major films — including System Crasher\, Rosa Luxemburg\, Marianne and Juliane\, and Faraway\, So Close! — followed by post-screening sharing sessions hosted by Macao film critic Quinton Tang\, Hong Kong film critic Joyce Yang\, and film scholar Dr. Derek Lam. Besides\, there are also four talks on different topics this year: Philosophy Workshop: “Do We All Have the Banality of Evil? — Hannah Arendt’s Philosophy”\, “Theatre and Rainer Werner Fassbinder”\, “Literature — Peter Handke and Wim Wenders”\, and “Judith Kerr’s World of Picture Books”. These talks allow the local audiences to engage with the film festival through artistic perspectives. \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 is the first film festival presented by CUT after the end of its operation of Cinematheque‧Passion. We are grateful for the continuous support from Goethe-Institut Hong Kong so that KINO Macao could be held once again. It is a challenging task to organize a film festival in the absence of venues\, funding\, and sponsorships\, but it’s fortunate that there is a group of vigorous and diligent film enthusiasts\, who work side by side to strive for the best results and to overcome any challenges. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There might be ups and downs along the path\, but as long as the audiences appreciate our efforts\, it is believed that our world will see the blooms of flowers one day. \nWhen: November 6–16\, 2020 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, 27 Calçada da Vitória\, Macau \nHow much: TBA \nFor more information\, send an email to info.cutcompany@gmail.com or check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall No. 3 (2019)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nThe Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling showcases nearly 50 pieces and sets of sketches and oil paintings which cover various periods of He’s artistic pursuit\, including his new works from 2019. From these exhibits\, visitors will catch a glimpse of his artistic development and feel his vigorous and endless creativity. \nThis exhibition also showcases House with No Roof and Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall\, the large-scale paintings completed by He last year. He has a fondness for architecture; he contemplated and constructed the relation between the figures and the architectural environment in his Labyrinth Tower series\, and he designed the He Duoling Museum by himself. He thinks highly of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s ‘less-is-more’ approach and has integrated the architectural philosophy into his artistic language: using subtractive techniques\, he conveys the subtlety and fullness in the refined yet simple composition of his paintings. \nThe figures depicted by He are mostly ordinary people from real life\, some of whom are his friends or family members (to draw their portraits requires the artist’s projection of private feelings). Nevertheless\, these figures have transcended the mundane reality since they are elevated in the realm of art – they are who they are\, but also no longer as such; they have already entered the artist’s imaginative context\, evoking a sense of mysterious vagueness and a metaphorical\, poetic quality. Except for the Wild Flowers series that he is currently obsessed with\, he mainly portrays human beings\, including the elderly and babies\, but mostly young women. \nWomen are undoubtedly the subject that can best represent the beauty of divine creation\, and women who ‘lead us to transcendence’ are his favourite subject. In his works under the Rabbit series\, such as The Rabbit Runs Downhill\, The Rabbit Dreams of the Apple\, Ophelia the Rabbit and Shalott the Rabbit\, the background is shrouded in blurry mist; figures in the paintings\, especially Ophelia and Shalott\, have been transplanted from the Western context to the specific ambience created by the artist and therefore attributed an indefinite quality of polysemy to the works\, leaving viewers room for multiple interpretations. Meanwhile\, their bodies are frail and fragile like the exquisite eggshell porcelain that can easily break at the merest touch\, just as beauty itself is delicate\, elusive and transient. \nBlue Bird 1984 (repainted in 2009)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nHe Duoling is a prominent figure in the development of contemporary Chinese painting. He rose to fame in the 1980s and his works such as Spring Winds have Awoken\, Youth and The Crow is Beautiful have brought a fresh visual experience to viewers and caused a sensation in the art scene. During his artistic career spanning over four decades\, He has always lived in Chengdu\, Sichuan province–the city where he was born\, except for a short journey to America. \nInstead of yearning for the so-called ‘centre’\, He Duoling chose to stay at the periphery and adhere to his artistic path. Distancing himself from the bustling\, chaotic and restrictive ‘centre’\, he instead delved into his own world without any distraction and roamed the realm of art in response to the call of beauty\, and reached his self-determined centre in total freedom and relaxation. As he absorbed the essence of both Chinese and western paintings and explored variations while staying true to his roots\, He has acquired exquisite painting skills and developed an elegant and poetic\, simple yet mysterious painting style. \nWhen: November 6\, 2020–March 21\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

They will create their work under the theme “Sen-SEX-bility and Inter-SEX-tuality” with different media\, materials\, and expressions to present the feeling and desire for knowledge about “sex”\, and provide an appropriate and reasonable understanding and communication of “sex” with the audience. \nNo matter an adult or a child\, nobody should be ashamed to discuss about “sex”. We may have a more open attitude and use an artistic perspective to appreciate\, cognize\, understand\, feel\, and share about the intimate relationship between “sex” and humans.\nThere will be a series of interactive activities during the exhibition\, including the opening ceremony\, Art Jam\, artist’s sharing session\, workshops\, and guided tours\, to strengthen the audience’s understanding of the theme\, the artists and their work\, as well as trigger reflection from different perspectives. \nMeanwhile\, there will be an interactive area\, to encourage the audience to mingle with art and be part of the exhibition by creating their own work under the theme. Events include an art jam session improvisation–with artists Frog Wong\, Heidi Ng\, Kit Lee\, and Weng Ian Tai. There’s also a gesso carving workshop with artist In Kuan Fan and a talk by artist MJ Lee entitled “My Silence Is Your Comfort – Sharing of gender conflicts in South Korea and gender situation in Macau”. \nWhen: November 9–27\, 2020 \nArt Jam II Improvisation – 4:00pm–4:30pm\, Sunday\, November 8\, 2020 \nGesso carving workshop – 2:00pm–4:00pm\, Saturday and Sunday\, November 21 and 22\, 2020 \nArtist sharing – 4:30pm–6:00pm\, Sunday\, November 22\, 2020 \n*Free guided tours are also available for free but reservation is required at least two days in advance \nWhere: Carmo Hall\, Avenida de Carlos da Maia\, Taipa \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:“A Way to Exist Away to Exist” – Works by Alice Kok
DESCRIPTION:Macau artist Alice Kok showcases her solo exhibition “A Way to Exist\, Away to Exist” – Works by Alice Kok in AFA Macau on November 21. In A Way to Exist\, Away to Exist\, Alice Kok presents a body of work whose expression is intrinsic in its subject\, one that explores exchanges between spiritual practice and community using image making\, objects\, interviews and print. The new works in this exhibition take a recursive and imaginative approach so as to reposition the artist’s relationship experiences of identity\, writing and landscape—both those personal to the artist and those shared with others. The results of these experiential moments as shared by Kok are personal and direct invitations\, but they also invite a wider community to contemplate her activities. \nThe artist’s photographs of Macau and Tibet consider the production of cultural and cross-cultural identities. As we rethink these subjects in the wake of a global pandemic\, Kok’s partially distorted images invite us to consider anew our relationships with movement\, communication and far-off places. These broad terms—abstractions to many of us—have direct personal significance for the artist\, whose own family unit is currently separated between these two places. \nAlice Kok’s solo exhibition organized by the Macau Art For All Society is part of the “Perpetual Impermanence” – Established Artists Exhibitions Series. Alice is the President of General Assembly of Art For All Society. Alice Kok left for France in 1998. She has graduated with the National Master Degree of Fine Arts (DNSEP) in Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Toulouse in France in 2004. \nWhen: November 21–December 18\, 2020 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2836 6064 or send an email to info@afamacau.com

SUMMARY:Artisanal French Sweets: Cannelés & Éclairs at Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Lime\, berry vanilla and chocolate éclairs at Sofitel At Ponte 16 \nSofitel Macau At Ponte 16 is taking French sweets to the next level: kickstart this December with a series of newly crafted creations of some of the most well-known–and popular–French pastries. The hotel’s gastronomic team has come up with whole new cannelés and éclairs of different flavors! \nTo live the French way is to delight in the finest things in life. Sofitel Macau proudly presents two time-honored French desserts with a modern twist. Based on traditional recipes and using only the finest ingredients\, these iconic sweet pastries are pleasures to the eyes and the palate. \nOriginated from the Bordeaux region\, cannelé is a small pastry that consists of a soft\, custard-like interior and a dark\, thick caramelized crust. To honor the traditional French artisan baking techniques\, Sofitel Macau uses an authentic copper mould to create a caramelized\, crispy crust while maintaining a soft and tender filling. Offered in three flavors–classic\, orange and Earl Grey\, Sofitel’s cannelés are a culinary indulgence created with both heart and soul. \nÉclair\, which means “lightning” in French\, is a decadent dessert to be eaten as quick as a flash of lightning. Inspired by traditional French baking recipes\, Sofitel Macau modernizes the popular éclair with three contemporary flavors: lime\, berry vanilla\, and chocolate. The new flavors are presented with stunningly artistic styling\, making them a perfect afternoon treat while paired with a hot coffee. As part of Sofitel Macau’s VIP amenities\, the re-invented cannelé and éclair will also be served at the buffet\, club lounge\, turndown service\, afternoon tea and MICE events. \nWhen: Ongoing \nWhere: Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16\, Rua do Visconde Paço de Arcos\, Macau \nFor more information\, call +853 8861 0016 \nCannelés at Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16
