SUMMARY:A Century of Glory: Ceramics\, Poems and Calligraphy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Rui Cunha Foundation inaugurates on Thursday\, July 2nd at 6:00 pm\, the Ceramics\, Poems and Calligraphy Exhibition “A Century of Glory”\, highlighting the month of the Chinese Communist Party’s Centenary\, founded on the 23rd of July\, 1921. The event is co-organized by the Macau Wisdom Humanities Encourage Political Association and the Greater Bay Area Ceramic Art Collection and Exchange Association\, with the support of FRC. \nTo celebrate this historic moment\, 31 pieces of art will be exhibited\, bringing together sculptures created for this event by renowned masters\, but also borrowings from collections of different eras\, with mixed themes and varied techniques\, seeking to show the historical development of ceramic sculpture and the charm of these works over time. \n“The various ceramic works in the exhibition were collected and kindly loaned by the Greater Bay Area Ceramic Art Collection and Exchange Association\,” reveals the artists’ manifest\, with pieces dating from the 1920s\, 1950s\, or 1970s. There are also commemorative works from 2021. “Some large-scale ceramic sculptures were specially created by two masters of arts and crafts from Guangdong – Huang Zhuonan (黃焯南) and Chen Peijin (陳沛津) – namely the ‘Kiang Wu Hospital’\, the ‘Yilong Firecrackers Factory’ and the ‘Macau National Day Archway’ pieces. These artworks are magnificent\, rich in composition\, vivid and lively\, using techniques to express innovation in tradition and exquisiteness in novelty\,” suggests the same document. \nThe exhibition creatively combines three artistic modalities: ceramics\, poetry\, and calligraphy. “It is particularly worth mentioning that the famous Macau calligrapher\, Ng Choi Kun\, uses different calligraphy styles to write poems and themes specially composed by local writers for the ceramic sculpture exhibits.” The poems accompany these pieces\, with inscriptions on the sculptures or handwritten separately. \nWhen: July 1–7\, 2021 \nWhere: Rui Cunha Foundation\, GF 749 Avenida da Praia Grande\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nAdmission is free\, but subject to limited capacity\, in accordance with the health recommendations implemented by local authorities.

SUMMARY:"The Awakening Lion" Exhibition and Dining Promotions at MGM Cotai and MGM Macau
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Mr and Mrs Lion by Hung Yi \nMGM Macau and MGM Cotai are home to some of the most sumptuous\, modern\, and sleek environments in the city. Besides loving their dining spots and art happenings\, we sometimes just head there to take in the beauty and artistry. MGM Cotai’s Spectacle is the ideal place to take the whole family and show the kids some great architecture but also check out some artistic installations along the way. This time\, we bring you a series of lion-inspired deals that will definitely land you there more than once. \nMGM Art Macao is an initiative happening at both MGM Macau and MGM Cotai where these two properties will be filled with art and food for all to savor and enjoy. Besides the jaw-dropping Awakening exhibition at the Spectacle\, MGM is also hosting the art symposium Contemporary dialogues of Chinese Culture Awakening\, and a series of wonderful lion-related dining deals. Read on to find out more! \nConveying the spirit of the lion\, the MGM Special Exhibition “Awakening” is a unique and forward-looking exhibition\, where Chinese artists from all over the world come together to present their creative ideas in Macau. Many artists have taken the imagery of MGM and the lion motif as the theme while combining the cultural significance of the “waking lion” from the Cantonese Lingnan tradition in their artworks. \nThe “Greater Bay Area Art Symposium – Contemporary Dialogues of Chinese Culture Awakening” was held in the MGM Theater on July 16 with an audience of around 300 guests. Top speakers including Pansy Ho\, Calvin Hui\, Wang Huangsheng\, Liu Guofu\, and Xue Song\, came together to discuss on how to awaken the Chinese art and culture\, and explore on its innovation and revival based on the current development of Chinese art. The symposium has also attracted over 140\,000 viewers during its live streams partnering with two popular online media platforms: Artron\, Chief Art Media Partner and Zai Art\, Official Livestreaming Partner. \nAt the symposium\, Curator Calvin Hui said: “MGM’s ‘Chairman’s Collection’ includes paintings and art installations from various important Chinese contemporary artists. Inspired by Eastern aesthetics while immersed in diverse cultural threads and ideas amid an era of globalization\, these artists create a contemporary expression cohering distinctive aesthetics of Chinese art\, blazing their own path apart from the monotonous mainstream discourse. Their artworks enrich and diversify the ecology of Chinese traditional culture\, hence helping to realize the creative transformation of the fine Chinese culture in the Greater Bay Area and contribute to the development of a Cultured Bay Area.” \n \nExhibition “Awakening”\nThe MGM Special Exhibition “Awakening” is one of the core activities of Art Macao. Curated by Calvin Hui\, the exhibition draws from the cultural symbol of the lion and interprets it through contemporary art\, in response to the longstanding historical and cultural roots and to demonstrate cultural confidence in the post-pandemic era. Chinese contemporary artists\, Xue Song and Liu Guofu have created brand new artworks inspired by the imagery of the lion. \nThe exhibition also features numerous works from the Chairman’s Collection\, including important works by such preeminent artists as Cai Guo-Qiang\, Wang Huangsheng\, Liu Jianhua\, Yu Yang\, Yuan Jai\, and Chloe Ho\, as well as the imperial carpet of the Qing Dynasty – Five Lions. These grandiose exhibits all explore the old and new artistic traditions with the audience and broaden their mind and sight of the future. \nTo spread a positive vibe to the guests while echoing the Art Macao theme of “To Create for Well-being”\, famous sculptor Hung Yi\, presents the public art project MGM Lion Party\, in the lush Nature’s Art at the Spectacle\, expressing a sense of joy and sustainability. Among his iconic animal sculptures in this project\, there is the Mr. and Mrs. Lion\, the first MGM Lion Family sculpture in his career\, which staged a joyous party with other 12 animal sculptures to bring happiness to all ages through art. \nThe exhibition “Awakening” takes inspiration from the visual and cultural symbolism of the lion and incorporates de cultural significance of the “waking lion” from Cantonese Ningnan tradition. SUMMARY:Non Character Non View – Works by Leo Fan
DESCRIPTION:Titled “Non Character Non View”\, the exhibition focuses on writing and photography as main art media. Combined with the Buddhist philosophical thought of “If all forms are seen not as forms”\, the title aims to look at how “characters” and “views” can become bridges to transcend the self in the hands of the artist. \nBorn in the 1970s\, Leo Fan loves and practiced calligraphy since the third grade of elementary school\, and he had a strong passion and pursuit of copying calligraphy books. When he arrived at middle school\, he performed very well in art subjects\, apart from calligraphy and painting\, he practiced dancing and sports as well. \nIn college\, Leo Fan was enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in film and television arts at Beijing Normal University. After returning to Macau\, he has been engaged in middle school calligraphy and visual arts education. \nThe only previous solo exhibition he had was Our Belle Epoque held in Ox Warehouse in 2017. After the 2017 painting exhibition\, Fan’s daily practices are more about writing and photographing. \nWhen: July 3–17\, 2021 \nWhere: Portuguese Bookshop\, 16 R. de São Domingos\, Macau \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Film still from “Radiograph of a Family” \nThe 5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF) takes place from July 9 to 25 and features a series of fantastic films to watch alone\, with your date\, family members and even friends. With screens at both Casa Garden and Cinema Alegria\, it discusses several themes across different generations\, focusing on vintage\, classics\, and new releases. If you’re interested in cinema and film\, then this is the ideal thing to do this summer. \nAs the first and only film festival dedicated to documentary film in Macao\, MOIDF hopes to build the bridge and connection between the documentary and Macau’s audience. \nAccording to the curating team\, “we have never been so dependent on videography to connect with the world. But could we simply connect with and understand the real world through videography? We have been forced to have a lot of “me time” by the pandemic. How could we stay at home on our own and reconcile with ourselves? Each film selected in this edition of the MOIDF\, perhaps\, tries to answer these questions. \nThis festival features films such as The Tree Remembers\, The Witches of the Orient\, Taivalu + A Study of Fly\, Minamata Mandala (Part I) and many more. \nThe pandemic fluctuations continue to persist in different countries\, alongside the wars and turmoils in various regions in the past two years\, the world seems to “get dark by the time”*. For cinema\, when it gets dark it means a new start — the start of a film. When the darkness is over\, the lights are back. From the world of cinema to the real world\, you might realize the world has changed a bit. Perhaps\, it is due to the fact that while directors present the cruel reality in the films they also offer covertly a glimpse of hope. Like a quote from The Metamorphosis of Birds\, one of the films in this edition of MOIDF\, “Every day the earth’s orbit changes\, as if it were telling us that we must change too.” We hope that the 5th MODIF\, after being suspended for a year\, could accompany everyone through films\, and envision the pandemic world from a new perspective.  \nWhen: July 9–25\, 2021 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Casa Garden\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 (normal ticket)\, MOP $30 (discount ticket) per person \nFor more information\, check their official website or send them an email to info@moidf.com. SUMMARY:Project Sands X: Beyond the Blue – An Exhibition of Ceramic Extraordinaire
DESCRIPTION:In support of Art Macao\, Sands China Ltd. is presenting Project Sands X: Beyond the Blue – An Exhibition of Ceramic Extraordinaire\, one of the special exhibitions of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021. The exhibition kicks off with an opening ceremony in July. It was curated by internationally famed artist Caroline Cheng\, and features works from more than 20 world-renowned ceramic artists and institutions\, showcasing both traditional and innovative creations. \nThe exhibition’s theme\, Beyond the Blue\, is layered in meaning. The works feature designs and palettes that are diverse\, showcasing how the beauty of ceramics can go beyond the traditional colors of blue and white. Using innovative designs\, techniques\, and technologies\, artists hope to bring positivity to the world through works that go beyond all expectations and imagination. The eye-catching exhibition seeks to elicit joy and inspire visitors to go beyond the blue mood of a pandemic world with optimism for a brighter future ahead. \nFeatured artists include Estonian-American artist Sergei Isupov\, who is internationally known for his surreal\, highly detailed and narrative works; American artist Richard Notkin\, who is well-known for his series of Chinese Yixing-inspired teapots and ceramic artworks; and American artist David Furman\, who draws inspiration from everyday life and is known for his hyper-realistic works. The exhibition also aims to reshape the audience’s perception of ceramic art production and enjoyment by presenting the innovative works of a new generation of artists. Among them are Adam Chau\, Brooks Oliver\, and Nicholas Lenker\, who have been recognized in the United States as “Emerging Artists” by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). \nThe exhibition’s works combine technology and ceramics with the innovative presentation\, and visitors are able to interact with some of the pieces. Exhibits made from recycled ceramics promoting sustainability in the art will also be on display with a vision to create a better world. And visitors can use their smartphones to listen to a complimentary audio guide to learn about the artists and their works while viewing the exhibits. \nMacau and ceramics share a centuries-long history\, with Macau as a key port for porcelain export on the Maritime Silk Road. This powerful tie was why Sands China chose a gold-themed ceramics exhibition for Art Macao 2019\, titled All That’s Gold Does Glitter – An Exhibition of Glamorous Ceramics. \nFollowing up on that extremely well-received offering\, Sands China is unveiling an even greater variety of ceramic masterworks with this revelatory exhibition. These exciting new works created on a new theme will once again surprise viewers and expand their appreciation of this multi-faceted art form. \nWhen: July 15–October 31\, 2021 \nWhere: The Venetian Macao\, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check their official website
