SUMMARY:Death and Rebirth – New Photography Works by Ieong Man Pan
DESCRIPTION:Taipa Village Cultural Association presents the last exhibition of the year\, “Death and Rebirth – New Photography Works by Ieong Man Pan”. As a starting point for this body of work\, Ieong recalls some of his life-changing personal experiences in search of a way to reset his photographic eye and continue to find a reason to pursue his passion. Focused on fleeting moments that usually pass unnoticed to the common and untrained eye\, the uncanny framing magnifies the meaning of being present\, being there at that specific moment of time and space\, equal to none other. \nAccording to the curator\, “it seems Ieong has been busy with many other facets still related to art in general and photography in particular\, such as curating exhibitions\, opening his own commercial photography studio and founding the 1844 Photography Art Space\, a gallery entirely dedicated to showing local photographic artwork. \nAs a starting point for this body of work\, Ieong recalls some of his life-changing personal experiences (see his artistic statement on the exhibition wall) in search of a way to reset his photographic eye and continue to find a reason to pursue his passion. Focused on fleeting moments that usually pass unnoticed to the common and untrained eye\, the uncanny framing magnifies the meaning of being present\, being there at that specific moment of time and space\, equal to none other. It is not a question of immortalizing the circumstance\, but rather finding a meaning of existence with simple clues and evidence of choice that are right in front of you. \nIn a way\, Ieong’s meticulous framing choices clear away the urban distractions to provoke introspection in the viewer\, as it mirrors one’s own reflection externally. Each angle is a persistent and ubiquitous view of reality’s idiosyncratic details. Each moment will extinguish immediately after one’s attention is drawn to distraction again. Therefore\, this photographic pause is in fact a breath to convey the lightness of our being.” \nWhen: October 6–31\, 2021 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua Dos Clérigos\, Taipa \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:MGM Awakening Lion at MGM Theater
DESCRIPTION:MGM proudly announced that it joins hands with the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre to present the MGM Awakening Lion\, an exclusive and tailor-made version of the award-winning Chinese ethnic dance drama\, Awakening Lion. With its premiere this October\, this is the first residency show of the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre outside of Mainland China. MGM Awakening Lion was created with the objective to showcase traditional dance drama with innovation\, telling the great stories of the Chinese people with an internationalized and contemporary backdrop. \nGuangdong\, Hong Kong\, and Macau are inseparable both geographically and culturally\, as they share the same cultural root – the Lingnan culture. MGM Awakening Lion presented by MGM and Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre explores the new possibilities in the utilization and preservation of cultural heritage\, as well as the collaboration between culture and tourism industries. The residency show will serve as the classic cultural performance of the GBA\, which utilizes cultural tourism to pass on Lingnan heritage and further deepens the exchanges in the region. \nThe original ethnic dance drama Awakening Lion is the first large-scale dance drama in China using Cantonese lion dance as its theme. Named the best dance drama by the most prominent dance award in China–the China Dance Lotus Awards\, the piece is a cluster of multiple cultural art elements including the lion dance\, Southern Fist (Nanquan)\, dance performance\, and another traditional folk intangible cultural heritage. A drama without dialogue\, it achieves bold innovations in stage music\, design\, lighting\, and costume and demonstrates the unique artistic charisma of the repertoire\, whilst telling the story of the Guangdong lion dance and Lingnan culture. \nMGM Awakening Lion is re-arranged and tailor-made according to the cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art equipment of the MGM Theater. The 70-minute drama is an exemplar of cultural tourism catered to the new generation of tourists. Retaining the plot and the strongest Lingnan cultural characteristics from the original dance drama\, the pace of the drama has been enhanced\, becoming more upbeat. The performing venue–MGM Theater\, dubbed as Asia’s most advanced dynamic theater with a top-of-the-line black box theater setup\, is going to truly elevate the entertainment experience and allure of the traditional dance drama. Empowered by the world’s largest permanent indoor LED screen which blurs the line between virtual and reality\, the drama fuses the venue and the performance together to deliver a one-of-a-kind and visual-stimulating extravaganza to the audience. \nThe ethnic dance drama depicts the journey of transformation of two lion dancers in the face of love and hate\, along with the dilemma of choosing between family and the nation\, reflecting the perseverance of the Cantonese people. The set has also undergone all-around enhancements in terms of character modeling\, video background\, stage props\, choreography\, and even the use of music. Illustrating the essence of patriotic spirit with a contemporary touch\, it is going to be a whole new multi-sensory journey for Macau residents and tourists. \nWhen: First Round – October 8–10\, 2021 (8:00pm)\, October 9–10\, 2021 (3:00pm and 8:00pm) \nThird Round – December 19–24\, 2021 (8:00pm)\, December 25\, 2021 (3:00pm and 8:00pm) \nFourth Round – February 6\, 2022 (3:00pm and 8:00pm)\, February 7–12\, 2022 (8:00pm) \nWhere: MGM Theater\, MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: MOP $280–600 per person \nFor more information and bookings\, check here. SUMMARY:Hairy Crab Menu at Grand Lisboa Palace
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Hairy crab soup in mini pumpkin \nGrand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau is launching a special hairy crab menu at Chalou\, featuring meticulous Cantonese delicacies enhanced by the prized crustaceans. Paying homage to classic Canton culture with a modern design language\, Chalou has carefully selected high-quality Jiangsu freshwater hairy crabs to make dishes not only with sweet crab meat but also decadent roe. Through rich flavors and precise presentation\, the hairy crab specials at Chalou are not to be missed. \nLimited to five portions per day\, the giant hairy crab roe with sea urchin braised homemade noodles are made with at least eight hairy crabs. Fresh crab roe paste and half a plate of sea urchins are served with al dente and smooth noodles\, fit to serve eight to ten guests. Fragrantly rich and strong tasting\, the noodles are paired with small plates of extra toppings and condiments for guests to adjust the portions and flavours to their liking. \nHairy crab soup in mini pumpkin (see featured image) is a perfect combination of soft and smooth shredded crab meat and silky mashed pumpkin\, simmered with the eight-hour-long slow-cooked bone broth. Each drop of soup holds a well-rounded taste of savory to sweet. \nThe stuffed chicken wings with hairy crab create a new precedent on the traditional stuffed chicken wings! This dish replaces the shrimp filling with resplendent crab roe\, crab meat\, and cuttlefish paste. The stuffed chicken wings are then deep-fried to the perfect ratio of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Their handmade hairy crab soup dumplings: feature a thin layer of dumpling skin that is hand-rolled by the chef before it is stuffed with sublime crab roe\, minced pork\, and soup gelatin. From the first bite of this steamed soup dumpling\, hot and delicious broth and tender roe fill the mouth with a flavor explosion. \nChalou also offers dishes such as hairy crab braised rice noodles\, baby spinach topped with braised hairy crab and Ibérico ham\, and fresh hairy crab and pork dumplings. Guests who prefer the more traditional way to enjoy crabs can choose to have male or female steamed hairy crab with perilla leaves. Gastronomes can pair these dishes with hot ginger tea or Chinese yellow wine to enhance the natural flavors of the crabs and counter their cooling effect. \nWhen: October 15–November 30\, 2021 \nWhere: Chalou\, Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau\, R. do Tiro\, Cotai\, Macau \nHow much: Starting from MOP $68 per dish \nFor more information and bookings\, call +853 8881 1320 \n*Starting from now until November 30\, Chalou has launched a special dinner discount for Macau locals on all hairy crab and à la carte dishes (except for the giant hairy crab roe with sea urchin braised homemade noodles). SUMMARY:Hairy Crab Specialties at Zi Yat Heen\, Four Seasons Hotel Macao
DESCRIPTION:Zi Yat Heen presents a highly anticipated menu bringing out the best of all flavours of the exquisite hairy crab sourced from Yang Cheng Lake in Suzhou\, taking guests on a sumptuous journey that thrills the palate with nuances of umami. Awarded a Michelin Star for the twelfth consecutive year at the unveiling of the 2021 Hong Kong and Macau Michelin Guide\, Zi Yat Heen offers traditional Cantonese cuisine with an emphasis on using the finest and freshest ingredients\, featuring favourites such as fresh seafood and creative dim sum dishes. This autumn\, executive Chinese chef Charles Cheung selects hairy crabs of superb quality from Yang Cheng Lake to create an array of dishes that showcases culinary savoir-faire\, paying tribute to Cantonese cooking traditions as well as regionally inspired finesse. \nIn addition to steamed whole Yang Cheng lake hairy crab\, the menu highlights sautéed king prawn with hairy crab coral. Shaped like a fully bloomed Chrysanthemum\, the perfectly sautéed prawn’s texture is firm\, contrasting the creamy and thick hairy crab coral. The combination expresses layers of umami’s distinctive characteristics\, surprising the palate. Baked stuffed crab shell with hairy crab coral features Cantonese cuisine’s unique method of baking to retain moisture and heat\, enabling subtleties inconsistencies and flavours to blend and unfold\, slowly revealing their essences with each and every spoon. \nFor wine pairing\, Chinese yellow wine is the obvious choice for its aromatic and warm profile\, while Chardonnay from Domaine Rolet is also recommended by their chef sommelier\, for its bright acidity\, nutty and savoury qualities\, underlining an intentionally made oxidative style that is similar to sherry. Non-alcoholics can also enjoy hand-brewed organic sparkling tea selections from Copenhagen Sparkling Tea Company. The delicate aromas of jasmine\, chamomile and citrus from BLÅ pairs beautifully with the various hairy crab dishes. Other selections of sparkling tea are also available on the menu. \nWhen: Now till December 15\, 2021 \nWhere: Zi Yat Heen\, Four Seasons Hotel Macao\, Cotai Strip\, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança\, Taipa \nFor more information and reservations\, call 853 2881 8818\, send an email to ziyatheen.mac@fourseasons.com or check the organizer’s Facebook page \nSautéed king prawn with hairy crab coral

SUMMARY:Structural Ambiguity – Works by Angel Chan
DESCRIPTION:Angel Chan’s upcoming exhibition at AFA is part of the “Femininity in Art” – Women Artists Exhibition Series. She graduated from the Macao Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts\, majoring in ceramics\, and later graduated from the Taipei University of Education with a Master’s degree in Art and Plastic Design. \nChan has been a fan of high heels since the early days of her career\, later on\, she abandoned the appearance of high heels and transformed them into symbols\, using plaster molds to re-mold the shapes of high heels\, the same shape of heels being arranged in different ways to form what appears to be an autonomous form. \nThrough her study of art and modeling\, Chan internalized the contradictory entities that created them as part of her artistic work and part of herself. This process demonstrates the transformation of Angel Chan in her own artistic journey. \nWhen: November 5–December 4\, 2021 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:Land of Hope – Historical Archives Exhibition on Leprosariums in Macao
DESCRIPTION:In order to showcase the achievements of the restoration\, use\, and revitalisation of heritage buildings to the public\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau presents the “Land of Hope – Historical Archives Exhibition on Leprosariums in Macao” – Reopening of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho. \nSince 2013\, IC has been carrying out the restoration works of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, in phases. Before the restoration and revitalization\, the five houses and the former recreation room were damaged and ageing in varying degrees\, even being riddled with parasitic plants\, as they had been left vacant and in a state of disrepair for many years. IC conducted comprehensive structural exams and analysis\, restoring each building\, based on its original material and layout. The structural consolidation has now been completed. In parallel\, at the end of last year\, IC initiated the procedures related to the 3rd Group of Immovable Heritage of Macao\, including the proposed classification of the Village of Our Lady in Ká-Hó and the former recreation room\, as well as the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows\, more recently announcing that the aforementioned properties have now been inscribed on the List of Classified Immovable Cultural Heritage. \nIn order to better utilize and revitalise the heritage buildings\, and to enhance the public’s understanding of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, IC holds the exhibition “Land of Hope – Historical Archives Exhibition on Leprosariums in Macao” at the former activity centre and the adjacent house\, showcasing nearly one hundred selected archives and related materials from the collections of the Archives of Macao. \nThe exhibition presents a study of the development of Macau’s leprosy treatment facilities\, outlining the history of leprosy treatments in Macau and providing important traces for future research on the history and development of leprosy treatments in Macau. Meanwhile\, the exhibition also demonstrates Macau as a leprosy pioneer in the field of relief and rehabilitation\, as well as the spread of humanitarianism in Macau. The exhibition is divided into two sections\, including the permanent exhibition at the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho. \nWhen: Permanent exhibition – From November 6\, 2021 \nArchives of Macao exhibition – November 6–May 6\, 2022 \nWhere: Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, Ka Ho Village\, Coloane \nHow much: Free admission

SUMMARY:"Symbiosis: Imagery and Aptitude" PRD Contemporary Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Symbiosis: Imagery and Aptitude” is a collective exhibition presenting the works of 21 artists and institutes around the Pearl River Delta area. It explores the talents’ take on contemporary art and history. \nIn 1825\, George Chinnery\, who was in the same generation as John Constable and John Mallord William Turner\, came to Macau. What was beyond his expectation was that it was the heyday of painting exports in Guangzhou during his 27-year stay in Macau. What was even more beyond his expectation was that oil painting\, this Western traditional art form\, has mythically become a major component in the Chinese contemporary art culture in the 20th century\, just three centuries later. This proud country\, boasting its own ancient cultural system\, has embraced the western oil painting technique with a revolutionary and innovative mind and passionate attitude\, and has profoundly transformed itself to develop a diversified and multi-faceted art system. \nIf history is only a mere occurrence\, there will only be surprises but not any regrets. When historians tried to find out the reasons for the decline of painting exports\, they all attributed the cause to the introduction of photography and printing techniques during the period of Emperors Daoguang and Xianfeng\, which replaced the handicrafts with painters. Thus\, it is invincible for the fall of painting exports. History will not repeat itself but only the pattern. Compared with the impact on the painting export industry in Guangzhou caused by the photography and printing techniques in the 19th century\, we are now in the digital media era\, surrounded by countless images that could be generated and transmitted in an unprecedented array of methods. The traditional painting technique in the west has shown signs of waning in this new image era\, similar to the decline of the painting export industry in the past. If technology only affected the painters and the industry that reproduced works three centuries ago\, what technology will sweep across nowadays is all the art forms of painting. \nThe crisis and the end are forthcoming. Nowadays\, in the highly-developed digital image industry\, we enjoy the convenience of accessing many images but we are also subject to the domination of technology all the time. The world of endless images has severed our relationship with the real world\, turning it into fast-moving consumer goods\, as well as the fragments of consumption and being consumed. The imaging technology turns the visual life into a purely visualized space that could exist without handmade elements. \nOur effortless\, slow-paced\, and intimate relationship with the world has long gone\, and as a result\, we have gradually lost our ability to perceive things wholeheartedly and profoundly. In light of this situation\, questions have been asked about “What is painting in this image age?” in both the west and the east since the 1950s with new viewpoints about the mission and destiny of painting. On the surface\, it seems to be about the decline of painting caused by specific technology and innovations\, but beneath the surface\, it is about the crisis of the fragmentation and superficialization of our ability to perceive. The decline of painting is due to the decline of perception in this era. \nThus\, their works are the results of paintings by a pair of skillful hands. It is a long and inevitable process of visualization; it is a process of the hands slowly and continuously perceiving the content; it is a process of hands continuously stimulating the tactile elements of art; it is a process of the start of a mental state to bear the weight of life. They truly show us that in light of the crises and hurdles of modern art\, perception is still the resort of salvation; in the image age\, the visual perception of mankind is still preserved in paint. \nWhen: November 6–December 19\, 2021 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page
