SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Ju Ming’s Sculptures at MGM Cotai
DESCRIPTION:MGM is committed to promoting art and culture to the public. With the belief of art and life are inseparable\, MGM presents Celebrating Life – Ju Ming Living World Sculpture Selling Exhibition to kick start as the company’s first public art project of the year. From now to April 7\, the internationally renowned artist’s Living World series will be exhibited at MGM Cotai. The series features Ju’s survey on human relationships with an emphasis on the aesthetic concept of merging art into life\, and life into art\, which is in perfect harmony with MGM’s mission in making art more accessible to the public. \nThe Living World series is one of the most iconic series of Ju Ming’s\, conveying Ju’s exploration on human sentiments using vivid and lively images and postures\, with numbers of works particularly depicting traditional family values. Inspired by his multicultural experiences and over 30 years of development\, Ju Ming applies both traditional and contemporary materials\, such as wood and stainless steel in this series. The wood carving sculpture is the most significant\, for Ju carves directly on a log with his signature sharp cutting strokes that create one-of-a-kind works. MGM is proud to exhibit over 40 pieces of unique wood carvings made by Ju\, including painted wood\, black and white painted wood\, as well as wood relief sculptures\, making it an extraordinary\, must-see exhibition. \nJu has begun working on his Living World Series with his colorful Painted Wood sculptures. During his early apprenticeship\, Ju was trained in the practice of painted carvings\, continuing this traditional legacy. He also assimilates traditional wood carving techniques with modern abstraction to depict social phenomena\, and preserve traditional virtue of filial piety. \nJu later shifted his focus to black and white Painted Wood and Wood Relief sculptures\, as well as sculptures left in their original raw wood color. His intention in using a minimalist palette is to give more attention to the carving of the works\, capturing the essence and gestures of his subjects in the series. The artist also twists and rolls stainless steel sheets\, giving the stainless steel sculptures a complementary sense of hardness and softness\, like the wood sculptures. \nBorn in 1938\, Ju Ming is an internationally renowned Asian artist and master of modern sculpture whose works provide inspirational and exquisite forms\, reminiscent of strokes used in Asian painting and calligraphy. The maturity of his sculptural language and aesthetic incorporates the free expression of forms and feelings\, and embraces simplicity and environmentalism. Ju channels his life philosophy and approach in his works\, by reconciling the traditional woodcarver’s technique with modern techniques and modes of abstraction. \n \nFrom 1953\, Ju was under the tutelage of master wood carver Lee Chinchuan studying painting and wood carving techniques. From 1968 to 1976\, he studied modern sculpture with Yuyu Yang\, a significant sculptor and pioneer of the modern art movement. In 1980\, Ju left Taiwan for New York City to pursue more opportunities overseas. Ju’s works from his Taichi Series and Living World Series were exhibited in New York City during this time. In 1999\, Ju announced the official opening of the Ju Ming Museum in Taipei. The mission of the museum is to record\, document and archive the process of his art-making\, as a home of the artist’s collections and to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of art. \nJu is truly an internationally recognized award-winning artist. In 1998\, he was awarded the Fok Ying Tung Award by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in Hong Kong. In 2002\, he won the 2nd Enku Grand Award in Gifu\, Japan. In 2003\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Art\, Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. In 2004\, he was conferred the 24th National Cultural Award of R.O.C.\, which is a lifetime achievement award and the greatest honor presented to members of the cultural sector whose lives are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art in Taiwan. In 2007\, he was awarded the 18th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize\, Japan. In 2011\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor for Literature\, Chinese University of Hong Kong. \nWhen: January 14–April 7\, 2019 \nWhere: Rippling Gallery\, Roaming Gallery & Floating Gallery\, Spectacle\, MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to MGM Cotai’s website or check the exhibition’s catalogue

SUMMARY:Idle Hands are the Devil's Playthings: Exhibition by Crystal W. M. Chan
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of AFA this year has opened! This exhibition is the first solo exhibition for Crystal W. M. Chan after she completed her degree in School of Visual Arts. As an Asian\, female artist\, she drew attention with her work while studying at art school in New York. In 2017 she won the Will Barnet Award issued by the New York National Club and held two solo exhibitions in New York in 2018. \nLeaving Macau to go to New York\, through the four years of studying and hard work\, Crystal has blurred the boundaries of the shapes she creates. It is her way of breaking through limitations. The creation of her works are more matured\, though the appearance of her paintings is somehow ambiguous but the emotional power of her work has revealed itself in clarity during this process of artistic pursuit. Alice Kok is the curator for this exhibition. \nWhen: February 27\, 2019–April 2\, 2019 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free entrance \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Space Reader: Fill in The One Hour
DESCRIPTION:Space Reader was formed in 2016 by a group of young creative persons in Taiwan\, aimed at carrying out collective creative experiments and research projects\, with different types of creators being invited for each project. The concerned creative form is a combination of installation and performance\, where an installation becomes not just an object to be appreciated\, but an artwork that connects with the audience and performers\, as well as with their actual shared experiences from impromptu interactions. The aim is to explore the possibilities of different read/response forms in the actual space and in the creator’s inner space through the lightest yet most spontaneous bodily actions. \nAmerican dancer and film director Yvonne Rainer said: “No dance work is a single idea or narrative\, but rather a subtle blend of diverse elements\, determining the nature of the whole experience.” This idea coincides with the concept of Space Reader’s projects. Each creator searches for the sketching of his/her body through space or objects. We are not dancers\, but we dance in space. A performance installation or an installation performance? The exhibition includes works by artists Huang Xuan\, Yao Min and Jiang Yu-Jie from Taiwan\, and is curated by Cai Guo Jie. \nWhen: March 17–April 28\, 2019 (closed on Mondays) \nWhere: Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information and details\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com\, check their website or the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Occupying the Imaginary – Works by Alexandre Marreiros
DESCRIPTION:As described by Alice Kok\, the curator\, the Chinese title of the exhibition “想入非非” in which “非非” is a Buddhist term (in Sanskrit: naiva-saṃjñin-nāsaṃjñin). It describes a world in which the yogi in the ancient Indian cosmology survived after death. If one is to believe that consciousness continues in the world beyond\, will it be a mysterious detachment between yin and yang? \nOr will it be a chaos of nothingness? This space between existence and non-existence is precisely the creative territory of the architect and artist Alexandre Marreiros. As an architect\, Alex describes his profession as rigorous and rigid. His work is to provide people a physical place to inhabit. It is a pragmatic process of problem solving. However\, as an artist\, Alex wants to go beyond the concrete. He likes to turn reality into a playground under his pen\, with which he creates a space of eccentric images\, positioning between the real and the imagined. \nTak Chun Macau Art Garden and AFA are the exhibition partners of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival. To celebrate 21st March as World Poetry Day\, A Multimedia Celebration\, organized by the Script Road\, will take place in Tak Chun Macau Art Garden. The program includes performances such as dancing\, singing\, video screening and poetry reading\, carried out by artists Chen Dongdong\, Crystal Chan\, Elias Choi-Buttinger\, José Drummond\, Lu Weipeng\, Weng Teng Choi-Buttinger\, Yam Gon Macau Outersky Poet Association (Bruce Lou\, Elvis Mok\, Jojo Wong\, Pansy Lau\, Fina Liu\, Karolis Chan). \nWhen: March 22–April 26\, 2019 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2836 6064\, send an email to info@afamacau.com\, or browse through their website

SUMMARY:Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government has been dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, displaying and studying Macau art works\, with the aim to promote local art to the public\, illustrating its developments and the artistic spirit of different eras. Since its introduction to Macau\, watercolour has been an important creative medium for local artists. Painters from different times have left us excellent works that have influenced later generations. Contemporary painter Lai Ieng is one of the best influencers\, who\, with his love for Macau landscapes and passion for painting\, has offered the city a rich trove of artworks. This exhibition\, Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng\, features 32 of his landscape watercolours. By following the artist’s sketching footprints\, through his keen observations and subtle brushstrokes\, visitors can discover the beauty of Macau’s scenic small alleys as well as the charm of local life. \nLai Ieng is reputed in Macau\, as well as in Mainland China and overseas\, for his watercolours of portraits and landscapes. He has studied painting under Lok Cheong (1923–2006) and also under Cheong Io Sang and Tam Chi Sang (1920–2007) among others. Apparently he acquired his painting skills in Macau but in fact he benefited from the teachings by Wang Zhaomin (1908–2003)\, known as “poet of watercolour”\, when he was studying with Wong Io Wa\, Lio Man Cheong and Lok Hei in Guangzhou back in the 1980s. \nLai developed his art during China’s reform and opening up period\, when the country opened to the outside world\, enabling Macao’s art lovers to gradually take part in Mainland’s art development trends\, see the world in a clearer light and have a better grasp of Chinese traditions\, besides forming their own artistic views. In the process Lai has been examining the roles of art in people’s life. When he was sketching and painting by himself he also taught painting\, and he and his students would accompany each other in art creation\, in spiritual support for one another. \nWhen: March 22–June 16\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check MAM’s website

SUMMARY:Imaginary Chronicles by Tong Chong & Noah Ng Fong Chao
DESCRIPTION:Two series of “Blossom Series” and “The Pleasure” are created By Tong Chong and Noah Ng Fong Chao\, and show in this exhibition. New works of the Blossom Series that explore the definition of beauty in people’s lives through daily nuances of life. The rapid spread of information nowadays bring constant impact on people\, from daily living habits to folk traditions\, people have a new understanding of beauty. As people’s way of thinking changes with time\, there is always a new definition of beauty. Tradition is rooted in people’s lives – how will it be under this influence? There is much food for thought. \nArtworks of The Pleasure express different cultural values are prone to misunderstandings and even conflicts due to cognitive differences. The artist created the artworks based on Ye Quan’s “Pilgrimage to Lingnan” – according to the artist\, if what is written by Ye Quan described the superficial cognition of the Chinese to the Western customs\, then he would like to use this misunderstanding of the West to create his artworks. \nWhen: March 27–April 18\, 2019 \nWhere: Creative Macau\, G/F Macau Cultural Centre Building\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Saline Baths – Shi Samben Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Samben said: “When I closely examine human nature\, I’ll only feel disappointment. But when I look around at the kaleidoscope of human behaviour\, the world becomes interesting again.” \nSaline means saltwater\, it can be water from the sea and also the solution that maintains the function of our body cells. Saline is mild\, gentle and boring. The artist puts himself into a mechanism like saline\, observes and distills the kaleidoscope of human being. A “bath” is a reverse of that particular day’s dispiriting in private. A place to “bath” contains intimacy among strangers and a willful revealing of oneself. The concepts of being private and being public are intricately intertwined and being calculated\, just like when the artist is producing his personal work. \nOx Warehouse invited Mainland video artist Samben to participate in a residency project in Macau. Samben’s works had been exhibited in Shenzhen\, Hangzhou\, Beijing\, Germany and Switzerland. Born in a seaside town\, Samben chose “Saline Bath” as the theme for this project. Based on his past animation videos\, he tried to showcase this kind of intimate or ambiguous thoughts with elusive visuals\, hoping to provide some other insights into the dilemma between common philosophical considerations and people’s actual life. \nWhen: April 11–May 26\, 2019 \nWhere: Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 28530026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:"Photo-Scripts": Photography Exhibition by João Miguel Barros
DESCRIPTION:Portuguese João Miguel Barros has his photography works exhibited at Navy Yard 1 from April 12 to June 2\, 2019. “Photo-Scripts” comprises twelve short stories\, all independent from each other\, and can be read like a book of short stories. They are twelve exercises based on a certain roaming of one’s gaze but also of one’s writing fictionalised from reality\, seeking meaning in moments that could easily go unnoticed. \nIt is an exhibition of loose ends\, based on narratives that are more or less consistent\, but capable of showing a world of small complexities. It is part of a pre-conceived itinerary\, intended to reveal simple stories from almost nothing\, at times just a little something following a logic that contradicts the cliché idea that only decisive moments are worthy of being told. \nWhen: April 12–June 2\, 2019 \nWhere: Navy Yard 1\, Macao Contemporary Art Center – Navy Yard No 1\, Rua S. Tiago da Barra\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the artist’s website

SUMMARY:Eternity in an Hour - Works by Lai Sio Kit
DESCRIPTION:Local artist Lai Sio Kit presents his works from April 12 until May 15\, 2019 at the Macau Art Garden. Gradually moving away from the urban scenery in recent year\, Lai Sio kit’s latest series of forest viewscapes have brought with them bracing possibilities; initially\, he began painting with the uncharted territory of the ageing city left undisturbed\, as he went on to inquire the ‘illusive and precipitous mountain ranges’ manipulated from his aerial perception of the forest. \nIn place of his developed series dominated by the bird’s-eye view\, he is now to present landscapes synthesized at the eye-level. It is Sio Kit’s intension to retain a lower viewpoint; as he sees grass sprouting\, entwining trunks and windswept limbs\, the river runs in a sloping cascade. His images are rendered with obsessive details\, characterized by remarkable textures and mellow tonalities; his downward gaze led us to see beauty in mundanity. The exhibition “Eternity in an Hour – Works by Lai Sio Kit” features a latest series of forest viewscapes paintings created by Lai Sio kit. \nWhen: April 12–May 15\, 2019 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page\, call +853 2836 6064\, send an email to info@afamacau.com\, or browse through their website
