SUMMARY:Art Macao: "Journey" Exhibition at Studio City Macau
DESCRIPTION:Continuing the momentum of Art Macao\, Melco presents “Journey”\, a diverse selection of works inspired by the highly varied culture of anime. Forming part of Melco’s contribution to Art Macao: International Art Exhibition\, this unique exhibition is a visual adventure that explores the evolution of contemporary Japanese anime from its beginnings rooted in ukiyo-e\, the traditional art of Japanese woodblock print and painting. \nThe visual references of anime abound in Japan and beyond are seen as a visual signature of the nation.  Both the contemporary genres of anime and manga can trace their roots and influences in the woodblock art form of ukiyo-e and its Edo period heroes. Today\, its influences can be readily identified in such varying media as computer games\, toy culture\, and the work of multimedia artists around the world. This first-of-a-kind exhibition for Studio City Macau includes such highlights as Amanami Animated by MAP Office\, Mr Waterloo by Rainbo\, Waves in Time by Southbend\, Blingee by Han Yanjuan\, and the “Modern Art of Floating World” collection by Horihiro Mitomo and Ukiyoemon. \nAmanami Animated \nAmanami Animated is a contemporary animated drawing from the roots of the Edo period in Japan\, from ukiyo-e\, and from the Japanese contemporary expression of the history\, culture and traditions of the ama-san free divers who work in the Bay of Ise in Japan. This animation revisits and reimagines the patterns of the genre ukiyo-e\, not as a technique\, but as a fictional ethnographic representation of the coastal landscape during the Edo period. \nThe story is divided into eight scenes\, framed by a screen and defined by three main tableaux–water (blue)\, land (green)\, and home (yellow). The eight panels depict scenes derived from specific sets of narratives\, which are combined with a collection of myths\, beliefs and dreams that were collected by the artists during many trips to Japan. In this contemporary interpretation of the ukiyo-e\, the numerous drawing layers made by a computer replaces the traditional wood block and colored print processes. \nIn addition to “Journey”\, the installation of vibrant activations and cartoon characters designed by Hiroshi Yoshii has transformed Studio City Macau’s main lobby into an exciting world of Japanese anime. DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Pan Jinlian in Chisha\, by Han Lei (2005) \nThis exhibition is one of the series of activities of “Art Macao” and the “2nd Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”\, showcasing the diverse manifestations and development of contemporary art in China and Portuguese-speaking countries\, and offering a new experience of Chinese and Portuguese visual arts to residents and tourists of Macau. \nThe exhibition “Lingua Franca” features numerous photography and video works by 22 representative artists from 10 countries and regions\, including Mainland China\, Macau\, and the Portuguese-speaking countries\, showcasing the distinctive regional cultures and diverse customs. This has led to exchanges and dialogues through the artworks\, allowing multiculturalism to resonate\, and composing wonderful art chapters from China and Portuguese-speaking countries. This exhibition is held at No. 55 – 57 Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (Green Townhouses)\, which is open for the first time after its restoration\, as well as at the Former Municipal Cattle Stable (Ox Warehouse)\, bringing Chinese and Portuguese artistic atmosphere to the streets. \nUntitled\, by Evandro Teixeira (1995) \nThe Portuguese-style Green Townhouses are composed of single houses with exterior walls painted in green and white\, with small and elegant interior spaces\, creating an ideal space with a cozy and comfortable atmosphere for visitors to enjoy the artworks. During the restoration period\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau completely preserved the façade and appearance of the buildings and maintained the spatial characteristics of its front and back yards. SUMMARY:Fiction Non Fiction Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The video exhibition “Fiction Non Fiction” Reassembling 24 frames of reality through non narrative film works”\, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, is on since October 28\, 2019. In order to introduce video art and promote diverse types of videos close by residents and tourists\, and enhance the artistic atmosphere of the city\, the exhibition showcases productions by five artists including Lao Keng U (Macau)\, Liao Jiekai (Singapore)\, Yosep Anggi Noen (Indonesia)\, Tulapop Saenjaroen (Thailand) and Raya Martin (the Philippines)\, which comprise non-narrative films in the form of video art – experimental and avant-garde films. \nIn these short\, medium and long experimental films\, the five artists attempt to give the audience an insight into the absurdity\, quality and reflection beyond mere images\, and probe into the understanding and construction of reality from a new perspective. SUMMARY:"By the Light of the Moon - Works by Hong Wai"
DESCRIPTION:Since an early age\, Hong Wai was attracted by the oriental aesthetic of Chinese Ink Art. Later in her life she started to travel around from Macau to Taiwan and then to France. Perhaps\, her rebellious genes must meet the French revolutionary soil. There are mainly two series of artworks for Hong Wai solo exhibition\, which are “Feminine Landscape”; and “Moonlight Series”. \n“Feminine Landscape”\, is a declaration of feminism in traditional Chinese ink painting. After a long period of time painting strokes of the lace pattern weaved on the paper\, Hong Wai wanted to return to Nature. Her latest work\, “Moonlight Series”\, is a removal of concept. DESCRIPTION:2019 Macau New Woman Contemporary Art Exhibition – WM joint exhibition brings together six outstanding female artists who are local and multicultural artists. They are Yang Sio Maan\, Angel Chan\, Luna Cheong\, MJ Lee\, Ana Jacinto Nunes and Tchusca Songo. In the opening ceremony\, there will also be a keynote speech and an artist sharing\, which will have invited guest speaker Yao Feng\, hostess Wendi Song and artist Cecilia Ho from the art exhibition last year. \nThe theme “WM” (“Wo Mun” in Cantonese) is a homonym of the word “Woman” in English and the word “We” (“Wo Men”) in Mandarin. Under the constraints of the social system and cultural influences\, the majority excessively magnify certain traits of a particular gender while ignoring the existing homogeneity in between males and females. This exhibition\, which conveys the commonality of “WE” as humans\, aims to promote equal opportunities for people of different genders. DESCRIPTION:Organized by Art For All Society (AFA) and Orient Foundation\, AFA Autumn Salon 2019 opens to the public on November 3. This year will be the 10th anniversary of the Autumn Salon which began in 2010. All participants are now working and living in Macau with different backgrounds. This year not only the young and potential artists but also artists who are playing a central role in Macau’s contemporary art scene has participated in the exhibition. It’s a good chance for artists to learn from each other to achieve complementarity. Just as in the past\, the awarded artworks of the 8th “Orient Foundation Art Award” have been selected\, the winner of “Orient Foundation Art Award” is to be given an opportunity to visit Portugal for a one month art exchange program\, and the result is being announced in the opening ceremony of “AFA Autumn Salon 2019”. \nAFA Macau and Orient Foundation have always been working on creating platforms for local and oversea artists\, providing opportunities for them to interact and learn from each other.
