SUMMARY:Involuntary Landscapes – New Photography Works by Hugo Teixeira
DESCRIPTION:“Involuntary Landscapes – New Photography Works by Hugo Teixeira” exhibition interprets the author’s attempts to piece together a historical and cultural consciousness lost when his family emigrated from Portugal and settled in California in the 70s. The artistic collection reflects the result of a number of crafted landscape photos from his travels in the California chaparral and the Portuguese montado. In doing so\, the present and past serve as lenses through which the other is interpreted. \nWhen: August 5–October 2\, 2020 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua Dos Clérigos\, Taipa Village \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2857 6118 or check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)”
DESCRIPTION:Featured image credit: Macao Cultural Institute \nThe exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)”\, is held from August\, 2020 till January\, 2021\, presenting the phenomenon of piracy in the surrounding waters of Macau and the multiple meanings it had for the city.  The word “pirate” conjures up the stereotype of adventures\, romances\, cruelties\, and barbarities\, which is a set of social representations cultivated fundamentally by literature and the film industry. \nHowever\, with a deeper study\, one can see that “piracy” is a particularly complex subject. The exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)” is a project that aims\, on the one hand\, to encourage the public and researchers’ interest in the study and investigation of this subject and to give an account of the different dimensions of the phenomenon of piracy as a social practice in a much wider political\, economic\, social and cultural system; and\, on the other hand\, to showcase a particularly rich collection of documentation preserved in the Macao Archives. \nThe exhibition features a selection of over 100 documents\, maps\, and photographs from the Macau Archives’ collection that addresses the theme of piracy in the Pearl River Delta region\, thereby revealing the diversity and thematic amplitude of the documentation\, as well as developing knowledge about the multiple meanings of the phenomenon of piracy for Macau in the second half of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. \nWhen: August 19\, 2020–January 31\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Archives\, 91–93 Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information check the organizer’s official website or click here

SUMMARY:"I Have Wiped the Pen on the Paper So Often It Seems Like a Drawing" – an Exhibition by Rui Rasquinho
DESCRIPTION:The work presented in “I have wiped the pen on the paper so often it seems like a drawing” is the result of the New Visions project by the cultural organization BABEL\, which annually presents an artist from Macau and whose central objective is to support contemporary artistic creation as well as to produce a critical discourse capable of placing local creation in a national and global context. In “I have wiped the pen on the paper so often it seems like a drawing” Rui Rasquinho explores the possibilities of drawing. In the entrance lobby of the Orient Foundation\, several leaflets on xuan paper are presented\, a practice that is already known to the local public and which appears here as a prelude to the questions that arise throughout the remaining three galleries. \nThe show evolves to work with a more complex definition\, first through a diversification of the supports\, giving the role of xuan instead of wood and other materials used in construction sites\, presented in the second gallery of the exhibition. The third and fourth gallery feature drawing machines (one of which was created in collaboration with Rui Farinha) that pose a variety of questions: what is a drawing? what is an image? what is art? what is authorship? \nWhen: August 20–September 22\, 2020 \nWhere: Casa Garden\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Unreturned Wanderer – Works by Leong Chi Mou
DESCRIPTION:Leong Chi Mou’s solo exhibition\, “Unreturned Wanderer – Works by Leong Chi Mou”\, organized by the Macau Art For All Society is part of the “Urban Identity” New Immigrants Artists Exhibition Series. Using Chi Mou as his pseudonym\, the original name of the artist is Leong Chi Hou. He was born in China in 1991 and moved to Macau afterward. In 2015\, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the School of Arts of Macau Polytechnic Institute\, major in oil painting. \nLeong uses the following methods of work in his creative process: 1. Transplanting contexts of images. 2. Explaining the reasonability of the ambiguous interpretations within a specific statement in a certain context. 3. The appropriateness of misplaced identity. Chi Mou is a person with a story\, and the story leads to creation. In this world where nothing is new\, the story is as the ancient poet has written\, “not supposed to be the same yet ought to be the same from the ancient ones; not supposed to be different yet ought to be different from the ancient ones”. Comparing to the story of Chi Mou\, it is an experience of painting and decorating the surface of a gold watch\, leading to paintings\, his recognition of the social decency showed-off by the gold watch is an admission ticket that he can hold on\, and the content of the picture also uses factors that are popular in the current society. \nThe language of expressions also adopts the techniques that are popular in the contemporary art industry (dislocation\, collage). This work led to mild criticisms and adopted a tension state of mind that both opposes and agrees so that the reserved paraphrase dimension is no longer inappropriate. In this way\, viewers are led to a space where they can judge by themselves and are free to extract any imaginations they need from Chi Mou’s works. \nWhen: September 5–30\, 2020 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:MO2049 – Sci-fi Works by Ricardo Lima
DESCRIPTION:This sci-fi works exhibition entitled “MO2049” presented by Portuguese concept artist and illustrator Ricardo Lima. This exhibition is inspired by worlds created in sci-fi films\, namely Blade Runner (1982)\, Akira (1988)\, Total Recall (1990)\, Ghost in the Shell (1995)\, Fifth Element (1997) and Dredd (2012). Ricardo Lima has taken this opportunity to develop a personal project using Macau\, a place he has never visited before\, as the backdrop for a film viewed through a dystopian lens. Lima’s science fiction narrative depicts the relationship between megacities and mother nature as the cycle of change accelerates towards an anthropogenic future. \nWhen: October 7\, 2020–January 8\, 2021 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua Dos Clérigos\, Taipa \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the organizer’s Facebook page or their website

SUMMARY:Surfing – Zheng Wenxin’s Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Entitled “Surfing”\, the exhibition features oil paintings and installation works. The artist’s oil paintings are popular for their graceful colors and beautiful brushstrokes. Thanks to the images conveyed by the “new medium”\, the pure visual materials in these pieces of art are elevated as the dominant elements of painting. \nThrough the immediacy and synchronization of the images released in different media\, a novel “time” experience belonging to both the collective and the individual can be realized. At the same time\, the contrast between oil paintings and installations investigates the mode and style of life in the Internet age\, as both the exporter and attractor of big data for mankind. \nWhen: September 12–October 31\, 2020 \nWhere: At Light\, 1 Pátio do Padre Narciso\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check their website or Facebook page

SUMMARY:Macau Experimental Video Festival (EXiM 2020)
DESCRIPTION:Called the “2+1+2 Program”\, EXiM 2020 kicks off with “Straightforward – Works by Chen Qiang” and “Heart to Heart – Experimental Video Exhibition”. Since 2018\, EXiM has been presented in exhibition format instead of screening. Works will not merely be screened\, but also be displayed via video installation. Doing so can better reflect the diversity in the creation of contemporary experimental image. \n“The year 2020 started in a weird way\, with the smartest creatures on the planet beginning to fear a virus emerging from nowhere absurdly. It is impossible to present an exhibition without exploring our current anxiety at this moment in time. When sorting out my past works\, I found that my thoughts on the living environment were buried in the “evolution” of my art. With the passage of time\, I have been constantly upgrading the accuracy of my focus in my works. These pieces directly and straightforwardly depict individual struggle and revel in the social tide.”\, the author of the works presented at “Straightforward”\, Chen Qiang\, explains. \nThe Chinese title of the exhibition comes from an old Hong Kong movie\, Sworn Brothers (Chinese:《肝膽相照》\, whose exact meaning is ‘to be trusted friends treating each other with sincerity’.) I chose the title for this event\, a showcase of Chinese experimental videos. In the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, I invite artists whose cities have just endured (or are still experiencing) long days of panic. The selected works are not just about the pandemic\, but about “life” at this very moment. \nMacau Experimental Video Festival: “Heart to Heart” – Experimental Video includes the works of the following artists: Chen Chen\, Lu Changbu\, Pu Yue Mei\, Wenhua Shi\, Tan Tan\, Tao Tao\, Zhou gang and Zhou zhang.\nWhen: September 17–October 18\, 2020 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or \ncheck the event’s Facebook page
