SUMMARY:Exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)”
DESCRIPTION:Featured image credit: Macao Cultural Institute \nThe exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)”\, is held from August\, 2020 till January\, 2021\, presenting the phenomenon of piracy in the surrounding waters of Macau and the multiple meanings it had for the city.  The word “pirate” conjures up the stereotype of adventures\, romances\, cruelties\, and barbarities\, which is a set of social representations cultivated fundamentally by literature and the film industry. \nHowever\, with a deeper study\, one can see that “piracy” is a particularly complex subject. The exhibition “Pirates in the Waters of Macao (1854-1935)” is a project that aims\, on the one hand\, to encourage the public and researchers’ interest in the study and investigation of this subject and to give an account of the different dimensions of the phenomenon of piracy as a social practice in a much wider political\, economic\, social and cultural system; and\, on the other hand\, to showcase a particularly rich collection of documentation preserved in the Macao Archives. \nThe exhibition features a selection of over 100 documents\, maps\, and photographs from the Macau Archives’ collection that addresses the theme of piracy in the Pearl River Delta region\, thereby revealing the diversity and thematic amplitude of the documentation\, as well as developing knowledge about the multiple meanings of the phenomenon of piracy for Macau in the second half of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. \nWhen: August 19\, 2020–January 31\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Archives\, 91–93 Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information check the organizer’s official website or click here

SUMMARY:Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall No. 3 (2019)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nThe Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling showcases nearly 50 pieces and sets of sketches and oil paintings which cover various periods of He’s artistic pursuit\, including his new works from 2019. From these exhibits\, visitors will catch a glimpse of his artistic development and feel his vigorous and endless creativity. \nThis exhibition also showcases House with No Roof and Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall\, the large-scale paintings completed by He last year. He has a fondness for architecture; he contemplated and constructed the relation between the figures and the architectural environment in his Labyrinth Tower series\, and he designed the He Duoling Museum by himself. He thinks highly of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s ‘less-is-more’ approach and has integrated the architectural philosophy into his artistic language: using subtractive techniques\, he conveys the subtlety and fullness in the refined yet simple composition of his paintings. \nThe figures depicted by He are mostly ordinary people from real life\, some of whom are his friends or family members (to draw their portraits requires the artist’s projection of private feelings). Nevertheless\, these figures have transcended the mundane reality since they are elevated in the realm of art – they are who they are\, but also no longer as such; they have already entered the artist’s imaginative context\, evoking a sense of mysterious vagueness and a metaphorical\, poetic quality. Except for the Wild Flowers series that he is currently obsessed with\, he mainly portrays human beings\, including the elderly and babies\, but mostly young women. \nWomen are undoubtedly the subject that can best represent the beauty of divine creation\, and women who ‘lead us to transcendence’ are his favourite subject. In his works under the Rabbit series\, such as The Rabbit Runs Downhill\, The Rabbit Dreams of the Apple\, Ophelia the Rabbit and Shalott the Rabbit\, the background is shrouded in blurry mist; figures in the paintings\, especially Ophelia and Shalott\, have been transplanted from the Western context to the specific ambience created by the artist and therefore attributed an indefinite quality of polysemy to the works\, leaving viewers room for multiple interpretations. Meanwhile\, their bodies are frail and fragile like the exquisite eggshell porcelain that can easily break at the merest touch\, just as beauty itself is delicate\, elusive and transient. \nBlue Bird 1984 (repainted in 2009)\, by He Duoling. Source: ICM \nHe Duoling is a prominent figure in the development of contemporary Chinese painting. He rose to fame in the 1980s and his works such as Spring Winds have Awoken\, Youth and The Crow is Beautiful have brought a fresh visual experience to viewers and caused a sensation in the art scene. During his artistic career spanning over four decades\, He has always lived in Chengdu\, Sichuan province–the city where he was born\, except for a short journey to America. \nInstead of yearning for the so-called ‘centre’\, He Duoling chose to stay at the periphery and adhere to his artistic path. Distancing himself from the bustling\, chaotic and restrictive ‘centre’\, he instead delved into his own world without any distraction and roamed the realm of art in response to the call of beauty\, and reached his self-determined centre in total freedom and relaxation. As he absorbed the essence of both Chinese and western paintings and explored variations while staying true to his roots\, He has acquired exquisite painting skills and developed an elegant and poetic\, simple yet mysterious painting style. \nWhen: November 6\, 2020–March 21\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:Costumes of Qing Emperors and Empresses from the Palace Museum
DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by the Macao Museum of Art\, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, and the Palace Museum\, “Stately Demeanour: Costumes of Qing Emperors and Empresses from the Collection of the Palace Museum” displays around 90 sets of costumes and accessories of Qing emperors and empresses\, including Bright-Yellow Cotton Dragon Robe with Satin Embroidery of Polychrome Clouds and Golden Dragons which demonstrates the power of Emperor Qianlong\, Emperor Xianfeng’s Armour Suit which represents his military power\, and the hair accessory inlaid with kingfisher feathers and jewels that highlights the empress’ grace and glamour. \nThe Qing dynasty was “built using bows and arrows\, with horse-riding and archery laying the foundation”. The Qing government occupied the Central Plains with their military might\, which can explain the retention of clothing and adornments of hunting nomads for easy horse-riding and shooting\, while also absorbing elements from Han people’s clothing and culture. A new clothing system was therefore established to ‘distinguish people’s ranks and reveal their positions and achievements’. \nCostumes of the Qing dynasty feature an integration of the Chinese nation’s heritage formed over thousands of years\, such as the ritual and etiquette system\, religious beliefs\, traditions and customs\, and a blend of hunting and farming cultures\, exerting great influence on the development of modern clothing. Visit the Macao Museum of Art and explore the unique culture and aesthetics behind the costumes of the Qing dynasty! \nWhen: December 17\, 2020–March 14\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 8791 9814 or send an email MAM@icm.gov.mo

The title of this exhibition in Chinese is “生生”. In addition to the meaning of “re-birth/renaissance”\, the two characters for “生” can also be combined as “甡”\, which means “numerous beings standing side by side”. \nThe English name “Art For All”\, which was named by the founding member and artist Bianca Lei at the time when AFA was born\, has always been the iconic name and purpose of the association. The Macau Art For All firmly provides artists with the greatest degree of creative freedom and space\, and at the same time acts as the bridge between the public and the government\, to cultivate outstanding talents in Macau. In the name of art\, the AFA brings to the public the indispensable innovative thinking of contemporary society\, and to convey the importance of the spirit of art in an atmosphere of broad-mindedness\, resilience and harmony. Therefore\, “生生”\, is an endless word. \nWhen: December 17\, 2020–January 30\, 2021 \nWhere: Galeria Lisboa\, Rossio Square\, Macau Fisherman’s Wharf\, Avenida da Amizade e Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2836 6064 or send an email to info@afamacau.com

SUMMARY:“Art-City-People” Exhibition Series: Above the Descending
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition–with paintings by local artist\, Wong Weng Cheong–explores the float space\, interpreted through 3D grating technology and flow-force of balance installations. With sounds of the sea echoing through the exhibition space\, the installations in the contradictions of materials\, gravity\, space\, and balance create a shaky and floating sensory effect. \nThe paintings\, through using grating technology that highlights visual tension and the sense of space\, convey the shapes of water. Paintings deviating from the static position create an extending tension\, producing internal dynamics between art and nature\, hence cohesion in the 2D interior of the exhibition venue. The showcase is curated by local artist Feiin Leong. \nWhen: December 17\, 2020–February 6\, 2021 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Jurassic X The Dinosaur Park at Broadway Macau
DESCRIPTION:Millions of years ago\, the planet was dominated by ancient vertebrate beings–dinosaurs. Massive volcano eruptions poured boiling lava over the earth\, burying much of the landscape\, and killing most of the dinosaurs. Millions of years later\, paleontologists are digging up fossil remains to learn more about the life of these formidable creatures. \nDinosaurs once ruled the entire terrestrial ecology for over 1.6 billion years. The evolutionary history of these massive governors remains mysterious. In the process of reasoning\, humans realized a message which transcended time and space–living is not equal to breathing and life is moving in various formations. Only by leaving our traces would it represent that we haven’t existed in vain. In “Jurassic X The Dinosaur Park”\, Broadway Macau takes you back to the era of dinosaurs to experience the sensation of the heyday of these giant lizards. \nAt the Jeep of Dinosaur Skull from Graveyard to Playfield\, you’ll ride on the dinosaur skull jeep originally created by the park and let your cinematic dream come true! From the lost and desperate kingdom to the life-abundant dinosaur playground\, the jeep takes you to lively dinosaurs in the dense jungle. Whether it’s the docile triceratops\, the fierce t-rex\, or the pterosaur hovering in the sky\, the exhibition will definitely take your breath away! \nAlso\, know the Dinosaurs from Cave Archeology: learn more about the dinosaurs by digging and exploring with archeological tools. We have created a mysterious cave to let children discover the lives of archaeologists. The area emphasizes actual practices to train children’s concentration and observation skills. The process of digging dinosaur bones can also strengthen their logical thinking and comprehension skills. \nYou’ll also be able to check out the hungry baby dinosaurs the await at the Brood Chambers! Before becoming adult dinos\, they must go through the period of baby dinos! Gazing at you with innocent big eyes\, the adorable baby dinosaurs are sure to get tons of hugs! Come pat the little ones but you better watch out for their sharp teeth! \nWhen: December 18\, 2020–March 21\, 2021 \nWhere: 2/F\, Broadway Macau\, Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus\, Cotai \nHow much: MOP $120 per person (free entry for children below 80 cm in height) \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website
