SUMMARY:Wandering Across the Landscape: Collection of the Macao Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art (MAM\, from the Portuguese acronym)\, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, hosts the exhibition “Wandering across the Landscape: Collection of the Macao Museum of Art”. By bringing together the artistic footprints left in Macau by artists from different periods and regions\, this exhibition showcases the city’s historical landscapes between the 17th and the 21st centuries and gives an overview of Macao-themed artistic creations in the modern and contemporary era. \nThe exhibition is divided into three sections: Section 1\, “Topographical Images: Prints from the 17th to the 19th Centuries” features prints produced based on original topographical images and showcases Macau landscapes through these faithful records. Section 2\, “Chinnery’s Shadow: The Artist\, His Companions and Students” features the works by George Chinnery – the most influential Western painter in Southern China during the 19th century\, and his friends who sojourned in Macao\, including Thomas Watson\, William Prinsep and Auguste Borget\, as well as his apprentice in Macau\, Baptista; these works serve as a record of their memories of the city and their precious friendship. Section 3\, “Traces of Modern Art: Works from the 20th to the 21st Centuries” features works by 12 artists from Europe\, the United States\, Japan\, Hong Kong and Guangdong\, China\, which offer more diverse perspectives in their representation of Macau. \nThis exhibition has an unprecedented scale with over 160 impressive artworks and is open to the public from today until 29 August 2021. In order to enrich the exhibition\, MAM will join hands with the Macao Chinese Orchestra to present the “Concerts in Museums” at 4:00pm on 24 October\, inviting the audience to appreciate Macao’s landscapes in an ambiance filled with melodious music. DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival (MAF) dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theater\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. The closing performance Taking Leave is a production adapted from American contemporary playwright Nagle Jackson’s namesake play by the National Theatre of China. In this play\, the National First Class Director Wang Xiaoying will lead a cast of veteran actors to interpret the story of an acclaimed actor who used to play the role of King Lear\, who was approaching the end of his life\, wandering between reality and imagination\, allowing the audience to witness the fragility and eternity of life. \nThe Jin Xing Dance Theatre from Shanghai\, one of the top modern dance companies in China\, acclaimed by critics as “an important unit in the history of Chinese dance”\, presents two works\, namely Wild Flower and Trinity. In Wild Flower\, the dancers interpret a wild flower’s tenacious existence through marathon-esque non-stop dancing and movement\, liberating themselves from the bonds of body and mind. The show Trinity\, a performance of works by three renowned choreographers\, namely Jin Xing\, Emanuel Gat and Arthur Kuggeleyn\, explores women’s independent existence and physiological space within each’s distinctive movements\, and illustrates the courage and strength among people through dancers’ bodies\, inspiring artistic appeal and avant-garde ideas. \nThe Coloane game \nHuangmei Opera is a national intangible cultural heritage. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. The play was created in the 1990s with Yu Qiuyu and Chen Xiting as the core creative team\, starring Ma Lan\, among other artists\, who innovated the classics together from a new perspective. The play instantly gained much reputation\, and thus became a reserved play in the theatre. On the MAF stage\, the play will be performed by the new generation of Huangmei opera actors\, passing on tradition and innovation. \nThe Macao Arts Festival establishes a display and exchange platform that has witnessed the professional development of local art groups\, which illustrates Macau’s cultural diversity from different perspectives. The dance theatre Drunken Dragon Dance by Four Dimension Spatial innovates the festive tradition with contemporary dance elements; the documentary theatre See You through Memories by Soda-City Experimental Workshop Arts Association\, explores the past and present landscapes of Patane\, reviewing the transformation of the city; Dance Duo recounts the transformation of the local dancer Kam Hiu Lam in a decade\, presenting her dance dialogue with choreographer Chou Shu-Yi and her joint creation with Wang Yuanqing; The Never-ending Task of Lust for Failure by Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association creates a worldview map beyond languages\, labels and disabilities of the special-needs; Property Guide at Lou Kau Mansion by Jay Lei and Shuk Man Lee and A Short Time Escape by Lei Sam I\, which were premiered at the Macao City Fringe Festival and were recommended by the artistic advisors of the Macao City Fringe Festival\, will be staged at the Macao Arts Festival again. \nMAF also encourages parents and children to enjoy artistic experiences. On the Other Side of Macao – A magical adventure by Bernardo Amorim\, a plastic arts and multimedia artist based in Macao\, brings the magic of narrative to life with the use of puppets and video mapping; The Coloane Game by Dream Theater Association offers guided tours visiting streets and alleys of Coloane\, experiencing the residents’ spirit of mutual help and the prosperity and decline of the shipbuilding industry; the artistic and cultural performances Performing Arts Gala at the Iao Hon Market Park for three consecutive nights\, inject vitality in the community through the arts. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program – Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself
DESCRIPTION:“Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself” is an experiment of media expansion undertaken by artist Wang Yan Xin from Lanzhou\, who utilizes performance art as the major medium that is complemented by videography\, installations\, photography\, painting\, and other means. This experiment of cross-media artistic creation initiates the discussions for oneself starting from an artist-in-residence project in Macau and explores the possibilities of artistic creation through a game-based approach. \nIncorporating Macau as space and the artist-in-residence project\, Wang Yan Xin creates this series based on self-observation and awareness of the weakness\, vulnerability\, and pretense of oneself. There are questions over what makes one look tough in appearance\, what makes one feel fear\, and what makes one feel powerless\, leading to critical thinking of oneself. Friedrich Nietzsche says\, “There are no facts\, only interpretations.” Different events only represent different interpretations. As “emotions are more influential than facts”\, lies can be interpreted as “another point of view” or “an opinion” because “everything is relative” and “everyone has their own truth”. SUMMARY:Profound – Works by David Sheekwan
DESCRIPTION:Albergue SCM and ALBcreativeLAB and Arts Empowering Lab are presenting the exhibition Profound – Works by David Sheekwan\, till July\, 2021 at the art space At Light. The exhibition is separated into two parts. The first one is held in the gallery At Light\, and the second part takes place in Albergue SCM. It features around 25 oil and ink paintings that David Sheekwan created recently in his home in Zhongshan. \nThe paintings in the exhibition feature Sheekwan’s minimalist and monochromatic style in subdued colors. A series of paintings incorporate twigs\, branches\, and pieces of wood and sand to give them different textures and highlight the different shades of colors and light. By placing these simple materials on a flat background\, the artist turns something ordinary into something extraordinary with this collage of everyday objects. Picasso and Braque invented modern collage by incorporating real objects into their paintings. David Sheekwan had been curious about the cosmos since he was a child and this is a recurrent theme in his artistic creations. The cosmos is so dark and mysterious and he wants to explore it\, to see how humans exist in the gigantic cosmos. His abstract ink and wash paintings show his unique observation of colors\, lines\, and proportions. His painting style is simple but mysterious–his paintings always leave a space to make people think. \nHe is based in the 4\,400 square meters Cuiheng creation base for art and culture. Sheekwan trained in ceramics and paintings on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1955\, then went to Paris where he opened his own design studio. He enjoyed great success in styling and designing fabrics and fashions for various fabric houses\, including New York’s Concord Fabrics. In 1972\, Sheekwan returned to his native Hong Kong to start his own fashion kingdom\, David & David. He designed the costumes of the stage play “A Story of White Serpent” which starred and was directed by Rebecca Pan Dihua. He also designed the costumes for the stage productions of “Warrior Lan Ling” by Willy Tsao and “Testimony” by Helen Lai Hoi Ling. In 1981\, he invested in the movie “Love Massacre” directed by Patrick Tam Kar-Ming and starring Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia. \nIn the 1980s\, he embarked on a new venture to be an artist and entered the Parson’s School of Design\, and attended photography classes at the University of California in Los Angeles. He published his first photography book\, “Photographs by David Sheekwan” in 1999. In 2013\, he held a painting and photography exhibition at the Cuiheng Art Museum\, exhibiting 38 recent oil paintings and photography. Hio Lam Lei moved to Macau when she was in elementary school. After graduating from high school\, she was admitted to the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She then studied at the Glasgow Academy of Fine Arts in Scotland for a Master’s Degree in fine art and graduated with distinction. \nLei’s Working across moving image\, sculpture\, installation\, and text-making.Last year\, Hio Lam Lei carried out an artist-in-residence program in England and began to create her work. In May 2021\, she extended her work and held her first solo exhibition in Macau Art For All Society (AFA). SUMMARY:Art Power Jamming – Friendship Chapter: Girls\, Works by Cheong Ut Man
DESCRIPTION:Ark – Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents an art program entitled Art Power Jamming\, under the theme of Friendship Chapter. The program\, which is sponsored by the Macao Foundation\, and supported by Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District and 10 Fantasia\, features seven unique shows presented by six Macau artists (members of AAMA) with diverse backgrounds. The exhibition series will run from August 2020 until July 2021. \n“Realize our inner self with artistic skills and sustain the cohesion among friends.”  By engaging in art creation\, we can strengthen our willpower and connect with all like-minded art lovers in the community. Media and different forms of art act as a unique language spoken by artists.
