SUMMARY:"Symbiosis: Imagery and Aptitude" PRD Contemporary Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Symbiosis: Imagery and Aptitude” is a collective exhibition presenting the works of 21 artists and institutes around the Pearl River Delta area. It explores the talents’ take on contemporary art and history. \nIn 1825\, George Chinnery\, who was in the same generation as John Constable and John Mallord William Turner\, came to Macau. What was beyond his expectation was that it was the heyday of painting exports in Guangzhou during his 27-year stay in Macau. What was even more beyond his expectation was that oil painting\, this Western traditional art form\, has mythically become a major component in the Chinese contemporary art culture in the 20th century\, just three centuries later. This proud country\, boasting its own ancient cultural system\, has embraced the western oil painting technique with a revolutionary and innovative mind and passionate attitude\, and has profoundly transformed itself to develop a diversified and multi-faceted art system. \nIf history is only a mere occurrence\, there will only be surprises but not any regrets. When historians tried to find out the reasons for the decline of painting exports\, they all attributed the cause to the introduction of photography and printing techniques during the period of Emperors Daoguang and Xianfeng\, which replaced the handicrafts with painters. Thus\, it is invincible for the fall of painting exports. History will not repeat itself but only the pattern. Compared with the impact on the painting export industry in Guangzhou caused by the photography and printing techniques in the 19th century\, we are now in the digital media era\, surrounded by countless images that could be generated and transmitted in an unprecedented array of methods. The traditional painting technique in the west has shown signs of waning in this new image era\, similar to the decline of the painting export industry in the past. If technology only affected the painters and the industry that reproduced works three centuries ago\, what technology will sweep across nowadays is all the art forms of painting. \nThe crisis and the end are forthcoming. Nowadays\, in the highly-developed digital image industry\, we enjoy the convenience of accessing many images but we are also subject to the domination of technology all the time. The world of endless images has severed our relationship with the real world\, turning it into fast-moving consumer goods\, as well as the fragments of consumption and being consumed. The imaging technology turns the visual life into a purely visualized space that could exist without handmade elements. \nOur effortless\, slow-paced\, and intimate relationship with the world has long gone\, and as a result\, we have gradually lost our ability to perceive things wholeheartedly and profoundly. In light of this situation\, questions have been asked about “What is painting in this image age?” in both the west and the east since the 1950s with new viewpoints about the mission and destiny of painting. On the surface\, it seems to be about the decline of painting caused by specific technology and innovations\, but beneath the surface\, it is about the crisis of the fragmentation and superficialization of our ability to perceive. The decline of painting is due to the decline of perception in this era. \nThus\, their works are the results of paintings by a pair of skillful hands. It is a long and inevitable process of visualization; it is a process of the hands slowly and continuously perceiving the content; it is a process of hands continuously stimulating the tactile elements of art; it is a process of the start of a mental state to bear the weight of life. They truly show us that in light of the crises and hurdles of modern art\, perception is still the resort of salvation; in the image age\, the visual perception of mankind is still preserved in paint. \nWhen: November 6–December 19\, 2021 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

DESCRIPTION:In order to showcase the achievements of the restoration\, use\, and revitalisation of heritage buildings to the public\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau presents the “Land of Hope – Historical Archives Exhibition on Leprosariums in Macao” – Reopening of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho. \nSince 2013\, IC has been carrying out the restoration works of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, in phases. Before the restoration and revitalization\, the five houses and the former recreation room were damaged and ageing in varying degrees\, even being riddled with parasitic plants\, as they had been left vacant and in a state of disrepair for many years. IC conducted comprehensive structural exams and analysis\, restoring each building\, based on its original material and layout. The structural consolidation has now been completed. In parallel\, at the end of last year\, IC initiated the procedures related to the 3rd Group of Immovable Heritage of Macao\, including the proposed classification of the Village of Our Lady in Ká-Hó and the former recreation room\, as well as the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows\, more recently announcing that the aforementioned properties have now been inscribed on the List of Classified Immovable Cultural Heritage. \nIn order to better utilize and revitalise the heritage buildings\, and to enhance the public’s understanding of the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, IC holds the exhibition “Land of Hope – Historical Archives Exhibition on Leprosariums in Macao” at the former activity centre and the adjacent house\, showcasing nearly one hundred selected archives and related materials from the collections of the Archives of Macao. \nThe exhibition presents a study of the development of Macau’s leprosy treatment facilities\, outlining the history of leprosy treatments in Macau and providing important traces for future research on the history and development of leprosy treatments in Macau. Meanwhile\, the exhibition also demonstrates Macau as a leprosy pioneer in the field of relief and rehabilitation\, as well as the spread of humanitarianism in Macau. The exhibition is divided into two sections\, including the permanent exhibition at the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho. \nWhen: Permanent exhibition – From November 6\, 2021 \nArchives of Macao exhibition – November 6–May 6\, 2022 \nWhere: Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho\, Ka Ho Village\, Coloane \nHow much: Free admission

SUMMARY:Structural Ambiguity – Works by Angel Chan
DESCRIPTION:Angel Chan’s upcoming exhibition at AFA is part of the “Femininity in Art” – Women Artists Exhibition Series. She graduated from the Macao Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts\, majoring in ceramics\, and later graduated from the Taipei University of Education with a Master’s degree in Art and Plastic Design. \nChan has been a fan of high heels since the early days of her career\, later on\, she abandoned the appearance of high heels and transformed them into symbols\, using plaster molds to re-mold the shapes of high heels\, the same shape of heels being arranged in different ways to form what appears to be an autonomous form. \nThrough her study of art and modeling\, Chan internalized the contradictory entities that created them as part of her artistic work and part of herself. This process demonstrates the transformation of Angel Chan in her own artistic journey. \nWhen: November 5–December 4\, 2021 \nWhere: AFA\, 4F Art Garden\, 265 Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:Death and Rebirth – New Photography Works by Ieong Man Pan
DESCRIPTION:Taipa Village Cultural Association presents the last exhibition of the year\, “Death and Rebirth – New Photography Works by Ieong Man Pan”. As a starting point for this body of work\, Ieong recalls some of his life-changing personal experiences in search of a way to reset his photographic eye and continue to find a reason to pursue his passion. Focused on fleeting moments that usually pass unnoticed to the common and untrained eye\, the uncanny framing magnifies the meaning of being present\, being there at that specific moment of time and space\, equal to none other. \nAccording to the curator\, “it seems Ieong has been busy with many other facets still related to art in general and photography in particular\, such as curating exhibitions\, opening his own commercial photography studio and founding the 1844 Photography Art Space\, a gallery entirely dedicated to showing local photographic artwork. \nAs a starting point for this body of work\, Ieong recalls some of his life-changing personal experiences (see his artistic statement on the exhibition wall) in search of a way to reset his photographic eye and continue to find a reason to pursue his passion. Focused on fleeting moments that usually pass unnoticed to the common and untrained eye\, the uncanny framing magnifies the meaning of being present\, being there at that specific moment of time and space\, equal to none other. It is not a question of immortalizing the circumstance\, but rather finding a meaning of existence with simple clues and evidence of choice that are right in front of you. \nIn a way\, Ieong’s meticulous framing choices clear away the urban distractions to provoke introspection in the viewer\, as it mirrors one’s own reflection externally. Each angle is a persistent and ubiquitous view of reality’s idiosyncratic details. Each moment will extinguish immediately after one’s attention is drawn to distraction again. Therefore\, this photographic pause is in fact a breath to convey the lightness of our being.” \nWhen: October 6–31\, 2021 \nWhere: Taipa Village Art Space\, 10 Rua Dos Clérigos\, Taipa \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:Frank Havermans: Infra # Macau_Artificial Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:This site-specific installation showcases an ongoing observation of infrastructure. Being mankind’s largest built structures\, infrastructure comprises an international network that supersedes national borders. Inspired by harbor maps from Macau\, Shenzhen\, Hong Kong and connecting them to Portugal (Lisbon) and the Netherlands (Rotterdam)\, the project became a way to convey the overseas relationships that have existed for hundreds of years between these cities. \nThe author has a personal or professional relationship with the chosen territories. If infrastructure connects people\, this storefront is a three-dimensional map that collides with a post-geographical affection. The spatial language of folded black harbor maps manifests uncanny views of an otherwise straightforward flat and generic typology. It proposes an imaginary transnational enterprise\, in which the white voids are merely temporary gaps that are soon filled as the built environment never ceases to expand. Hypothetically\, the ultimate iteration of this window would be an uneasy dense\, black picture. \nThis work done remotely was a special collaboration between Impromptu Projects studio and Studio Frank Havermans. A study model was developed and then replicated on the other side of the world by means of computer-aided drawing to ensure the fine-tuning of the full-size installation. Laser-cut plywood of different thicknesses was applied to the designated shapes\, spray painted and installed on-site by a local carpenter. \nThe artist is not present due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic; nevertheless\, his work has emerged for the first time in Macau and has been commissioned specifically for the storefront. As in all of Frank’s work unique in his spatial approach to form and site conditions—there is a limited time frame to experience and enjoy a glimpse of this international Dutch artist’s manifest. Metaphorically speaking\, the storefront is the tip of the iceberg\, with his latest monograph “Transitional” made available for consultation. \nWhen: September 9–December 31\, 2021 \nWhere: Impromptu Storefront\, 14–A Travessa Inácio Baptista\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information on the artwork\, click here

SUMMARY:The Melting Frozen Soil – Borderless Arts Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Rui Cunha Foundation presents The Melting Frozen Soil exhibition\, bringing together the works of two local plastic artists\, Minnian Ng Ka Ian and CC Wong Nga Peng\, to the walls of FRC Gallery. \nDeveloped by the Borderless Arts Association\, the exhibition showcases 30 art pieces\, created from mixed materials\, such as acrylic paint\, varnish\, crystal glue\, canvas\, wool\, embroidery thread\, silk and cotton\, leaves\, petals\, tree bark and other natural elements. According to the artists\, «we wanted to convey in our pieces the sensation of movement\, with stunning colors and the use of natural and artificial materials». \nThe theme underlying the project is the global concern for planet Earth. “The Arctic plays an important role in climate change. Since it is warming more than two times faster than the rest of the world its changes are affecting the global climate and ocean systems. Melting ice shelves are disturbing ecosystems\, releasing greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide stored in permafrost\, and exacerbating the ‘out of control’ climate change»\, declares the artists’ manifest of intentions. \nMinnian Ng and CC Wong hope to bring different visual experiences to the public through their works\, using a variety of media and interactive AR technology (Augmented Reality). \nWhen: September 21–October 5\, 2021 \nWhere: Rui Cunha Foundation\, GF 749 Avenida da Praia Grande\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:Bold Spirit: Works of Shi Lu From the Collection of the National Museum of China
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Labour-exchange Team – Scene of Rural Life in Northern Shaanxi \nThe exhibition is divided into four sections\, namely Revolutionary Epic\, Praise of the New Era\, Chang’an New Painting and Strength of Character\, featuring over 150 outstanding works by Shi Lu\, a renowned painter of the Chang’an Painting School\, including ink wash paintings\, prints\, oil paintings\, and calligraphies\, supplemented by relevant historical materials\, documents and pictures\, showing the change and innovation of the theme of his works and the formation of his distinctive style. \nShi Lu (1919–1982)\, a native of Renshou County in Sichuan Province\, is the adopted pseudonym of Feng Yaheng\, because of his admiration for Shi Tao and Lu Xun. As one of the 20th-century artists with the greatest contemporary spirit and avant-garde vision in the history of Chinese art\, Shi Lu devoted his life to the inheritance\, innovation\, and development of national art\, and advocated the artistic principle of “learning from tradition on the one hand and learning from life on the other”\, incorporating the scenery of the Loess Plateau and the customs of northern Shaanxi into his paintings. By developing his own style in landscape painting\, portraits\, bird-and-flower painting\, calligraphy\, seal carving\, poetry\, and literature and art theory\, he created and promoted one of the most important schools of modern Chinese painting – Chang’an Painting School. Shi Lu led his life exactly as he said: “I believe the intention of the painter is to represent the times.” Through this exhibition\, the audience can learn his unique artistic style in the history of modern Chinese art\, and experience the spirit of an era from an artistic perspective\, not to be missed. \nWhen: September 18–November 12\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here \nCoachman\, by Shi Lu

SUMMARY:Art Macao Outdoor Installations
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Learning from Macao\, by the Drawing Architecture Studio. Handover Gifts Museum \nSix eye-catching outdoor art installations are displayed at different corners of the city as part of Art Macao\, a mega international cultural and artistic event in Macau\, providing visitors with distinctive art and cultural attractions. \nLearning from Macao is a mega-urban panorama. Using the signature language of architectural axonometric drawing\, the mainland-based Drawing Architecture Studio has attempted to explore a new 21st-century urban design concept with Macau as its theme. It’s on display at the exterior wall of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. \nThe artwork “Gathering” by Su Xinping from Mainland China\, sets the huge hands at an upward angle. The work combines figurative expression with surreal dimensions to create a mountain-like shape\, allowing viewers to look up from a relatively low horizontal line of sight and feel the infinite space that extends out. The artwork can be visited at the Art Plaza of the Macao Cultural Centre. \nChakra was created by Riccardo Cordero\, from Italy. The sculptures\, located in Tap Seac Square\, are formed into a circle\, allowing people to visit and appreciate the work from various perspectives. \nGlobal City\, signed by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich\, uses steel and resin to interpret the concept of “a global village”\, highlighting the advantages of human interconnectedness while showing the threat posed by human civilization to the earth\, exploring the realistic significance of sharing the same house in the hustle and bustle in the development of humanity. You can visit this in front of the Taipa Houses-Museum. \nMade of mirror and fiberglass\, the installation Miss You\, by Thailand artist Gongkan conveys the idea that “love” is freedom without boundaries\, and everyone can express “love” without restraint. Open to the public at Anim’Arte Nam Van. \nIn Barra square\, you’ll be able to see Sun Boat\, a work that explores migration by Moataz Nasr (from Egypt)\, features a solar disc of 360 paddles to illustrate the endless\, interconnected movement of human beings on earth seeking a better life. \nWhen: September 1–30\, 2021 \nWhere: Handover Gifts Museum of Macao\, 237–285 Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau\, Art Plaza\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau\, Tap Seac Square\, Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida\, Macau\, Taipa Houses-Museum\, Anim’Arte Nam Van\, 744B Avenida Panorâmica do Lago Nam Van\, Macau\, and Barra square\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official page \nMiss You\, by Thailand artist Gongkan. SUMMARY:Art Power Jamming: Rejuvenation “Live for Death – Works by Tracy Wong”
DESCRIPTION:Ark-Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents Art Power Jamming – Rejuvenation “Live for Death – Works by Tracy Wong”. The exhibition is sponsored by Macao Foundation\, organized by Ark-Association of Macau Art and Cclovethink\, supported by Café Voyage and Graceart Design Studio. \n“What is the meaning of existence that we have been searching for throughout our lives? How did it appear? If life has a time limit\, will the meaning of survival be different? In the busy working life\, people seem to forget the meaning of their existence\, leading the same lifestyle at the same time at the same stage. We all hope that we can bring good things to the world during our survival\, and we need the experience to grow up during the evolution from infant to old age”\, the curator said. \nLive for Death is appealing for Martin Heidegger. “People should live in the world like a dying passer-by and cherish it instead of manipulating the earth. There are many choices to live\, and perhaps a choice has changed the trajectory of life”. Live for Death reflects Heidegger’s evaluation of this society\, “As long as a person is still alive\, he will live towards the direction of death. The life of this being runs through the entire process of death\, which is a form of existence that precedes death. In this process of dying\, people can truly feel the strong sense of self-existence\, and they are present ahead of death.”  \nTracy is currently the president of Oh My Hand Macau\, project supervisor of Binshu Studio\, illustrator of  Thirty-seven Degrees\, as well as the founder of Cclovethink. She is fully dedicated to culture\, art and handicraft education\, and is keen to record her daily occurrence and lifestyle through illustration\, needle pen\, handicraft\, graphic design and printmaking After studying graphic design in secondary school\, she obtained her professional qualification by enrolling in the Printmaking and Art Administration Certificate Programme under the major of Visual Arts in Macau Polytechnic Institute. Throughout these years\, she has been involved in numerous artistic creations\, including handicraft\, art\, printmaking\, sketching\, seal cutting\, as well as participating in different collective exhibitions in Hong Kong\, Macau\, not limited to the Hong Kong Touch Art Festival.   \nWhen: August 7–September 12\, 2021 \nWhere: Café Voyage\, 31 Rua Do Padre Antonio Roliz\, Edf.
