DESCRIPTION:The second “One Plus One – Macau and Overseas Artists Exchanged Exhibition” is organized by the Art For All Society (AFA). The project aims to strengthen the creative and artistic exchanges between Macau and overseas artists and expand the local and overseas art exchange platform. Every two years\, the AFA will select a representative artist from Macau and an overseas artist or artists group to collaborate (such as the Mainland or Hong Kong or abroad) in a joint exhibition in a local gallery. \nAnd then the following year\, the two selected artists will hold another joint exhibition based in Macau. DESCRIPTION:Themed “Everyone is an Artist”\, this year’s Macao City Fringe Festival presents a total of 18 extraordinary programs and 17 outreach activities in January 2021\, guiding the audience to wander across the streets and alleys of the city and enjoy the fun of art. The show Stephen Chow by Ben Ieong\, Anna Ieong\, Endy Leong\, and Carl Ao Ieong\, is a medley of scenes from Stephen Chow’s films\, which evokes pleasure for the audience in appreciating the philosophy of life. \nThe Fringe Festival has spared no effort in bringing creative and fascinating experiences to the audience\, such as “On Site” by Tracy Wong\, integrated into the subtheme of the ‘Crème de la Fringe’ series\, which presents a number of works through body language that introduces contemporary dance to the audience in an urban space. Instead of watching art performances in a theater\, the performance F’art for you by PO Art Studio attempts to present a new form of theater performance\, in which the audience can place orders for food and performances\, and enjoy them at home. Focus to – Release by Kathine Cheong and Sueie Che\, attempts to associate brainwaves with images and encourages participants to be aware of their moments of focus and release. \nIn view of the public’s enthusiastic response\, two additional performances of the program Stephen Chow will be offered on January 25 and 26\, 2021. Tickets for the additional performances will be on sale from December 30\, 2020 through the Macau Ticketing Network; ticket sales are limited to four tickets per performance per person on the first day. Only limited tickets are currently available for the other programs of the Fringe Festival\, and the public is advised to purchase as soon as possible. \n \nThe Fringe Festival also invites the public to convey a love for the community together through art. “Todos Fest!”\, another subtheme of the ‘Crème de la Fringe’ series\, encourages the elderly and people with mental and physical disabilities to explore their physical possibilities and express their life stories through dance. In The Distance between the Ocean and Us – Puppetry Playback Theatre\, marine waste collected from beaches is transformed into puppets\, improvising stories about the ocean. \nGrandma’s Treasure Box tells the story of how a grandmother and her grandchild went through different stages of their lives together\, seeking to convey to the audience the happiness of caring and being cared for. Art is everywhere in people’s daily life. SUMMARY:Macau International Art Performance Festival – MIPAF 2021
DESCRIPTION:MIPAF (Macau International Performance Art Festival) is one of the major annual events organized by Ox Warehouse\, a Macau-based non-governmental organization. Since its launch in 2005\, MIPAF has been inviting artists active on the international art scene for exchange and performance in Macau. MIPAF promotes conceptual art that highlights individualized performance using the body\, created through the integration of artistic techniques and forms including\, performance\, sound\, installation\, Internet\, images\, multimedia. Mixing various media\, materials and elements in an open way for the final presentation injects more diversity into the works\, while at the same time blurring the boundaries in artistic creation. \nThe are avant-garde\, dada\, action art\, body art and happenings\, all focused on the expression of artistic individuality in the course of development. As worldwide festivals grow larger in scale and richer in form\, Live Performance Art has also become a highlight in international art shows. \nWith MIPAF (Macau International Performance Art Festival) marking its 15th edition\, we curate the event themed on “Body as an open medium”. Centering around such experimental theatre elements as time (process/course)\, space (site)\, occasionality (uncertainty)\, and interactiveness (fluidity)\, this edition aims to observe and examine our shared living environment\, with a focus on exploring the unique ideas and the essence of body art. SUMMARY:“re:ai” - Vernissage & Music Performance
DESCRIPTION:The dual exhibition “re:ai” of Macanese artist Edmundo Remédios Lameiras and his daughter Emma Remédios Lameiras will take place at the gallery of the Portuguese Bookshop. In the exhibition\, Edmundo draws elements from popular social media culture and downloaded different profile pictures of people from the Internet\, and then uses multiple AI (artificial intelligence) imaging applications to modify and reshape the original representations of these avatars. \nFrom here\, the topic of “portrait” is introduced and developed into a series of imagery. These printed works are colorful and the facial features of each portrait have been deliberately “fine-tuned” by the artist. The characteristics of the eyes\, ears\, nose\, and mouth have been intentionally tampered with\, jumping out of the boundaries of being recognizable or not. Its shoe design adheres to the core concept of stylishness and comfort. SUMMARY:Human Observation – Os Wei Multimedia Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Human Observation is a long-term image experiment project by O CHI WAI (Os). This exhibition features his photos from the project. The artist likes walking across different corners in the city\, observing and recording at will the surroundings with a smartphone. Shooting photos in an intuitive way\, he may be a top gun in the group where ‘everyone is a photographer. Educated in visual communication design in Taiwan\, Os abandons conventional photography techniques\, and most of his photographic works were taken with a mobile phone at whim\, on themes such as figures\, nature\, and buildings. The works\, although on subjects unrelated to one another\, convey his inner feelings through visual media. \nHe looks at the world\, at Macau people’s subjective consciousness\, with a focus on daily life and work. Observing others\, he found that man is a strange animal\, always sending messages with dressing\, facial expressions\, behaviors and movements. In Macau\, a city of diversity\, various lifestyles co-exist after centuries of interaction among peoples from different cultures\, creating a close yet strange relationship between individuals\, which is typical of Macau. This exhibition\, combing Os’s records from Human Observation in recent years\, shows more than 100 photos all around the exhibition space – placed in a disorderly way. They constitute image fragments of Os\, dreamy yet realistic. Also on display is a video work converted from images and then set to music which serves as the background sound for the whole exhibition venue. This way\, the artist pieces together audio-visual elements to bring out the theme at a deeper level. \nThe exhibition then introduces the video installation by extending this concept. A mirror confronts visitors once they enter the venue. DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Sunset\, Infinite Good is an exhibition of local artist Yang Sio Maan\, showcased at Creative Macau. The exhibition features some of Yang’s illustrations\, including from her book\, which she wrote and illustrated last year. According to the author\, “Mr Matos Goes to Buy Tomatoes” tells the story of Mr Matos who lives around Bird Garden and goes to buy tomatoes\, the tomatoes fall onto the ground on his way home and turn into a giant plant. Yang intends to bring Mr Matos to life in the exhibition. \nYang Sio Maan is an independent illustrator based in Macau. She received a BA in English Studies from the University of Macau and an MA in Illustration from the University of the Creative Arts (UK). Aside from accepting illustration commissions\, she also participates in community art projects\, exhibitions\, and alternative publishings\, exploring the possibilities of visual language. In 2009\, she had her solo exhibition Everywhere and Anywhere at the Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program – Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself
DESCRIPTION:“Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself” is an experiment of media expansion undertaken by artist Wang Yan Xin from Lanzhou\, who utilizes performance art as the major medium that is complemented by videography\, installations\, photography\, painting\, and other means. This experiment of cross-media artistic creation initiates the discussions for oneself starting from an artist-in-residence project in Macau and explores the possibilities of artistic creation through a game-based approach. \nIncorporating Macau as space and the artist-in-residence project\, Wang Yan Xin creates this series based on self-observation and awareness of the weakness\, vulnerability\, and pretense of oneself. There are questions over what makes one look tough in appearance\, what makes one feel fear\, and what makes one feel powerless\, leading to critical thinking of oneself. Friedrich Nietzsche says\, “There are no facts\, only interpretations.” Different events only represent different interpretations. As “emotions are more influential than facts”\, lies can be interpreted as “another point of view” or “an opinion” because “everything is relative” and “everyone has their own truth”. SUMMARY:Profound – Works by David Sheekwan
DESCRIPTION:Albergue SCM and ALBcreativeLAB and Arts Empowering Lab are presenting the exhibition Profound – Works by David Sheekwan\, till July\, 2021 at the art space At Light. The exhibition is separated into two parts. The first one is held in the gallery At Light\, and the second part takes place in Albergue SCM. It features around 25 oil and ink paintings that David Sheekwan created recently in his home in Zhongshan. \nThe paintings in the exhibition feature Sheekwan’s minimalist and monochromatic style in subdued colors. A series of paintings incorporate twigs\, branches\, and pieces of wood and sand to give them different textures and highlight the different shades of colors and light. By placing these simple materials on a flat background\, the artist turns something ordinary into something extraordinary with this collage of everyday objects. Picasso and Braque invented modern collage by incorporating real objects into their paintings. David Sheekwan had been curious about the cosmos since he was a child and this is a recurrent theme in his artistic creations. The cosmos is so dark and mysterious and he wants to explore it\, to see how humans exist in the gigantic cosmos. His abstract ink and wash paintings show his unique observation of colors\, lines\, and proportions. His painting style is simple but mysterious–his paintings always leave a space to make people think. \nHe is based in the 4\,400 square meters Cuiheng creation base for art and culture. Sheekwan trained in ceramics and paintings on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1955\, then went to Paris where he opened his own design studio. He enjoyed great success in styling and designing fabrics and fashions for various fabric houses\, including New York’s Concord Fabrics. In 1972\, Sheekwan returned to his native Hong Kong to start his own fashion kingdom\, David & David. He designed the costumes of the stage play “A Story of White Serpent” which starred and was directed by Rebecca Pan Dihua. He also designed the costumes for the stage productions of “Warrior Lan Ling” by Willy Tsao and “Testimony” by Helen Lai Hoi Ling. In 1981\, he invested in the movie “Love Massacre” directed by Patrick Tam Kar-Ming and starring Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia. \nIn the 1980s\, he embarked on a new venture to be an artist and entered the Parson’s School of Design\, and attended photography classes at the University of California in Los Angeles. He published his first photography book\, “Photographs by David Sheekwan” in 1999. In 2013\, he held a painting and photography exhibition at the Cuiheng Art Museum\, exhibiting 38 recent oil paintings and photography.
