SUMMARY:The City in My Heart — Creative Artwork Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ox Warehouse Art Group continues to function as a platform for young artists\, supporting and encouraging new talents to showcase their creative endeavors in Macau. On October 13\, 2018\, at the new “Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Field”\, the association will usher in an art exhibition with a new generation of artists\, entitled The City in My Heart — Creative Artwork Exhibition. \nA total of 17 young creatives\, including eight artists and nine university students\, have been invited to participate in the exhibition. Are they fascinated by the buzzing and glamorous Cotai Strip or those gambling games dubbed as wonderful entertainment? Or are they stuck in endless excavation works\, congested traffic\, and the ever-rising commodity and house prices of Macau? Do they indulge in nostalgia for the bygone era and world? Are they discontent? Do they feel helpless? Or just numb? Through this exhibition\, visitors can take a glimpse at the new generation’s unique vision of their city\, a place where they live\, work\, or study. \nParticipating artists are 2 UP Studio\, Kinson Lam\, Ella Lei\, Natalie Pun\, Ai Sio Pui Ian\, Sour Graphik and Yang Illustration. Participating students are Kay Cheong\, Benny Tang\, Tonny Deng\, Esther He\, Cherry Huang\, Doria Lin\, Tina Loi\, Shirley Sou and Mori Xu. \nWhen: 4:30pm–7:00pm\, October 13 (opening); 12:00pm–7:00pm\, October 14–November 18\, 2018 (closed on Mondays) \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, 15 Rua do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free \nFor more information\, email them or go to their website

SUMMARY:Ng Fong Chao: Untitled at Fifty
DESCRIPTION:Local artist Ng Fong Chao is having his works exhibited in an event curated by Alice Kok and organized by AFA Association. Within the period of the last two years\, Fong Chao has been through two major events in his life: the death of his father and the birth of his son. The experience of his father’s passing has had a tremendous resonance in Fong Chao’s life. Since Macau AFA has invited him to hold a solo exhibition\, he has taken the occasion to create a new series of artworks dedicated to his father\, revealing in front of us the depth of his reflections upon the subject of life and death – two intrinsically interdependent subjects. \nNg Fong Chao arrived in Macau from Ningbo during the 80’s at the age of sixteen. He started work as a teenager. Although he was introduced to the harsh reality of society at such a young age\, he has always carried with him the dream of art. He laments the fact that he was separated from his father since childhood and was not able to grow up near him. \nNg Fong Chao developed his art mainly based on practices. His exploration of the artistic medium is unusually wide\, including printing\, painting\, sculpture\, performance art\, conceptual photography\, video art and installation. Even though Fong Chao has a low-profile style and is a man of few words\, he is however quite readily sarcastic to the affairs of our world. His humor is often acutely present in his artworks. One of his series of conceptual photographs sees him dressed in a wedding gown posing against the touristic and historical sites in Macau dressed as a demoiselle. His performance art is equally provocative. In many of his actions\, he can be seen half naked doing various ceremonies with the chopped head of a pig. In another\, he poses surrounded by a team of Barbie dolls that are “watching” him washing his feet. \nReaching middle age\, Ng Fong Chao does not rebel just for the sake of it. In this season of change\, he reflects upon decades of art practice in his life and reaches out for a mid-term assessment. He examines the proposition of life and death through the artistic means and life itself is his material. In the video installation artwork “Final Note” he filmed the final words of his dying father in a video. Death is not the end but a transition. In the work “Speech without Words”\, both the deathbed testament of his father and the baby babbling sound of his six-month-old son were recorded and translated anew with the voice translation application on a smartphone. These unreadable translated sentences are printed and honorably framed on the wall. Through the artistic way of thinking\, the artwork is a solemn response by the artist toward the interminable cycle of life and death. \nWhen: October 26–November 25\, 2018 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free entry \nFor more information\, check AFA’s website or call them on +853 2836 6064

SUMMARY:Vietnamese Boat People in Macao: Photography by Chan Weng Hon
DESCRIPTION:Vietnamese Boat People in Macao is a special and moving photography exhibition by Chan Weng Hon taking place at 1844 Macau Photography Art Space. It features 42 pictures taken by local photographer Chan Wen Hon during the 70s and the 80s. It’s the artist’s first solo exhibition and his images narrate the lives of Vietnamese boat people in Macau during this time\, reflecting the living conditions and the temporary settlements of Vietnamese refugees. The exhibition was curated by Ieong Man Pan\, Kim Chan\, Weng Io Wong and Haruka Lau. Chan Weng Hon\, who “accidentally” became a reporter in 1980 and has worked in newsrooms\, TV stations and government departments since then. \nThe exhibition shows the reality of living for Vietnamese Boat People at the time. It represents a record of the historical moment for Macau when it was once the “port of first asylum”. The scenes documented in the photos are mostly about the lifestyle and the environment of the refugees. \n \nThe conflict between China and Vietnam occurred between 1978 and 1979\, when large numbers of Vietnamese refugees escaped into Macau and other countries that consisted of asylum. On 27th July in 1978\, at the request of the United Nations\, Macau announced the establishment of a temporary camp for Vietnamese refugees. At that time\, there were three places in Macau where traces of refugees could be found\, including the area of Ilha Verde\, Taipa (now the Scout Association of Macau) and Ka Ho Refugee Centre (now Salesian Youth Ministry of Macau). \nWhen: October 30–December 14\, 2018 \nOpening Hours: Monday–Saturday\, 11:00am–1:00pm; 2:00pm–6:00pm \nWhere: 1844 Macau Photography Art Space\, 17 Edificio Loi Fat\, Lojas A e B\, R/C Rua do Infante\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor additional information\, check the event’s Facebook page or the 1844 Macau Photography Art Space’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Mobile Voyages: Photos by Luis Gustavo Martins
DESCRIPTION:Luis Gustavo Martins is going to have some of his travel photographs exhibited at Regency Art Hotel lobby gallery in an event organized by YunYi Arts & Culture. During Luis Gustavo Martins’ several voyages around the world (mainly in the scope of his travels for teaching and conferences\, as a researcher and as an academic)\, he likes to experience and capture the atmosphere of the places he visits and the charisma of the people he meets (usually total strangers)\, as a way to feel and assimilate his impression on different cultures\, traditions\, history\, architecture and ways of living. \nBeing an enthusiast of technology\, Martins always tries to explore new ways to take advantage of technology as a novel creative tool and medium. As a result\, he started using his “always in the pocket” smartphone as a convenient lens through which he was able to register his personal and subjective view on the world around him\, coming to grips with the smartphone’s inherent image and sound limitations\, taking them as a creative opportunity\, instead of an obstacle. \nTraveling most of the times alone\, he started sharing with family and friends the images of his voyages\, in an attempt to let them experience vicariously his feelings and subjective impressions\, while at the same time making him feel a little bit more accompanied in his journeys alone and away from home. \nThis exhibition presents a selection of images of some of these journeys. The exhibition is open to the public from 10:00am–8:00pm daily. \nWhen: October 30–November 18\, 2018 \nWhere: Lobby gallery\, Regency Art Hotel\, 2 Estrada Almirante Marques Esparteiro\, Taipa \nHow much: Free entrance \nFor additional information\, check the event’s Facebook page\, Yunyi Arts & Cultural Communications Association Facebook page or The Regency Art Hotel website

The two sections form a complete work that creates an ambiance of a “garden”; whether it is the installations that make up the space or the moving images – both serve as clues for the audience to “decode” the exhibition’s theme and symbols. \nGuan Huaibin is currently the president\, professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. He has participated in several important international art exhibitions\, and his works have been collected by several art institutions. Guan Huaibin excels in deconstructing and absorbing the traditional cultural elements and modes of perception into his own language system and creative structure of his works. By incorporating Chinese classical garden aesthetics into his spatial installations\, the works are permeated with an alternative temperament of Chinese contemporary art. \nIn order to offer visitors a more in depth understanding of Guan Huaibin’s works\, the organizer will hold a series of activities\, including a guided tour of MAM\, guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artist”\, among others. The activities allow the audience to travel the spaces between installations and to experience the spatial aesthetics and visual enjoyment of installation art. Those interested in participating the guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artists” can register through IC’s Activities Registration System. It is all organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organized by the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. \nWhen: November 2–February 24\, 2018 \nWhere: Special Exhibition Room\, 3/F\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, please visit MAM website or call them on +853 8791 9814

SUMMARY:Fleeting Speeds: Photography Exhibition by Ricardo Meireles
DESCRIPTION:Fleeting Speeds is an exhibition by Portuguese artist Ricardo Meireles. According to the artist\, its purpose is to show that “the world moves on and on\, changes and evolves”. The project presented here tends to synthesize a way of observing the city. The important thing is to realize where we live\, the memories and identity that this place has. People are constantly on the move while these spaces tend to be permeable. \nIntroducing a moment of pause within these urban flows into Macau makes it possible\, once again\, to get involved and absorb the environment that in some way has been ignored and/or disregarded. “We allow ourselves to observe through elements of the city\, in social\, cultural and contextual means in connections within transit spaces\, whether they are streets\, squares\, alleys\, courtyards and at various moments the variation in scales\, speeds of movement and transport that converge\, diverge\, by whatever means; pedestrian\, bicycle\, motorcycle\, automobile\, buses. Stop\, look and observe”\, Meireles states. The exhibition is opened to public at Creative Macau gallery. \n \nThe exhibition is divided into three different sections. There is photography\, which registers the movement of the pedestrian flows\, in a testimony that focuses on a certain perennial element of the city\, whose characteristics of which it is part of the local memory\, of its identity as façades\, fences\, symbolisms where people’s movement fades\, movement in the city at different points. The second part focuses on video resulting from a search to understand how the urban movement is processed\, sporadic flows in different places of Macau\, slow\, other fast ones with greater volume of people who pass\, wander\, seek. On the other hand\, other times when that section of street there is without more register of people. The third and last section is of installation results from photos taken around Macau\, in search of characteristics of the place\, parts of forgotten memories\, the process of time about things\, what surrounds us. Shown in individual panel formats\, these images are presented in a plural context. In front of these images\, suspended acrylic slides makes a mediation between what is observed and who observes. Finding a means of recognizing the images through a half-reflecting filter that lets it transpire at the same time reflects the observer. “I watch\, I’m a part” is its motto. \nWhen: December 3–31\, 2018 \nWhere: Creative Macau\, G/F Macau Cultural Centre Building\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Ju Ming’s Sculptures at MGM Cotai
DESCRIPTION:MGM is committed to promoting art and culture to the public. With the belief of art and life are inseparable\, MGM presents Celebrating Life – Ju Ming Living World Sculpture Selling Exhibition to kick start as the company’s first public art project of the year. From now to April 7\, the internationally renowned artist’s Living World series will be exhibited at MGM Cotai. The series features Ju’s survey on human relationships with an emphasis on the aesthetic concept of merging art into life\, and life into art\, which is in perfect harmony with MGM’s mission in making art more accessible to the public. \nThe Living World series is one of the most iconic series of Ju Ming’s\, conveying Ju’s exploration on human sentiments using vivid and lively images and postures\, with numbers of works particularly depicting traditional family values. Inspired by his multicultural experiences and over 30 years of development\, Ju Ming applies both traditional and contemporary materials\, such as wood and stainless steel in this series. The wood carving sculpture is the most significant\, for Ju carves directly on a log with his signature sharp cutting strokes that create one-of-a-kind works. MGM is proud to exhibit over 40 pieces of unique wood carvings made by Ju\, including painted wood\, black and white painted wood\, as well as wood relief sculptures\, making it an extraordinary\, must-see exhibition. \nJu has begun working on his Living World Series with his colorful Painted Wood sculptures. During his early apprenticeship\, Ju was trained in the practice of painted carvings\, continuing this traditional legacy. He also assimilates traditional wood carving techniques with modern abstraction to depict social phenomena\, and preserve traditional virtue of filial piety. \nJu later shifted his focus to black and white Painted Wood and Wood Relief sculptures\, as well as sculptures left in their original raw wood color. His intention in using a minimalist palette is to give more attention to the carving of the works\, capturing the essence and gestures of his subjects in the series. The artist also twists and rolls stainless steel sheets\, giving the stainless steel sculptures a complementary sense of hardness and softness\, like the wood sculptures. \nBorn in 1938\, Ju Ming is an internationally renowned Asian artist and master of modern sculpture whose works provide inspirational and exquisite forms\, reminiscent of strokes used in Asian painting and calligraphy. The maturity of his sculptural language and aesthetic incorporates the free expression of forms and feelings\, and embraces simplicity and environmentalism. Ju channels his life philosophy and approach in his works\, by reconciling the traditional woodcarver’s technique with modern techniques and modes of abstraction. \n \nFrom 1953\, Ju was under the tutelage of master wood carver Lee Chinchuan studying painting and wood carving techniques. From 1968 to 1976\, he studied modern sculpture with Yuyu Yang\, a significant sculptor and pioneer of the modern art movement. In 1980\, Ju left Taiwan for New York City to pursue more opportunities overseas. Ju’s works from his Taichi Series and Living World Series were exhibited in New York City during this time. In 1999\, Ju announced the official opening of the Ju Ming Museum in Taipei. The mission of the museum is to record\, document and archive the process of his art-making\, as a home of the artist’s collections and to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of art. \nJu is truly an internationally recognized award-winning artist. In 1998\, he was awarded the Fok Ying Tung Award by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in Hong Kong. In 2002\, he won the 2nd Enku Grand Award in Gifu\, Japan. In 2003\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Art\, Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. In 2004\, he was conferred the 24th National Cultural Award of R.O.C.\, which is a lifetime achievement award and the greatest honor presented to members of the cultural sector whose lives are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art in Taiwan. In 2007\, he was awarded the 18th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize\, Japan. In 2011\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor for Literature\, Chinese University of Hong Kong. \nWhen: January 14–April 7\, 2019 \nWhere: Rippling Gallery\, Roaming Gallery & Floating Gallery\, Spectacle\, MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to MGM Cotai’s website or check the exhibition’s catalogue

SUMMARY:No Where There – Photography Works by Tang Jing
DESCRIPTION:1844 Macau Photography Art Space will host a photography exhibition by artist Tang Jing\, ‘No Where There – Works by Tang Jing’ January 15 to March 16\, 2019 at 1844. \n‘No Where There’ is a series of images photographed by Tang Jing since 2013. The artist selects the shooting places through careful selection and research. The creation process includes interviews\, video recordings and on-site experiences etc. ‘No Where There’\, which means ‘beautiful new world’ in the Chinese title\, is inspired from one of the three most famous dystopian novels\, ‘Brave New World’ (1932) by the English author Aldous Huxley. It is a novel set in London in 2540 CE\, depicting the writer’s imagination about the future of the high-tech civilization\, where there was no pain\, but happiness. The novel depicted how such a ‘perfect world’ has brought huge influences on the mental world of people and their social civilization\, the novel profoundly reflected the relationship between individual and collective\, as well as problems between freedom\, order and conditioning. \nSixteen images from the ‘No Where There’ series will be shown in this exhibition. The artist aims to explore the relationship between architecture\, power and aesthetics. Through documenting the situations brought by tourism consumption and rapid urban development under the appearance of beautiful cityscapes\, this series reflects a mass aesthetics trend and a lack of cultural identity recognition. Tang have photographed many European-style buildings in different cities in China\, such as the ‘Arc de Triomphe’ on Guanggu road in Wuhan\, Luodian Town in Shanghai\, ‘Eiffel Tower’ in Hangzhou etc\, recording the phenomenon of mimicry in architecture after the rapid urban and economic development. \n \nThe architectural styles of the replica buildings documented are different\, including styles of northern European town\, international landmarks\, etc. Not only does it show the replication of their aesthetic appearances\, but also presenting the difference between its imitation appearance and its inner function in public areas. The phenomenon exhibits the aesthetic demand on behalf of the local citizens\, their expectation on lifestyle\, identity and collective values. Observing these ongoing changes in the cities\, by means of new documentary photography\, the artist recorded the situation in acuity\, within this context of urban development in China today: ‘Who built these buildings? Who are the users? What were the aesthetic views of the people who built them? How will people with such views affect Chinese society today?’ \nWhen: January 15–March 16\, 2019 \nWhere: 1844 Macau Photography Art Space\, 17 Rua do Infante\, Edf.
