SUMMARY:Exhibition Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, Sparkling Garden – Guan Huai Bin Works\, features 16 sets of installations and images by contemporary Chinese artist Guan Huaibin\, presenting the light and darkness of a “garden” in a variety of forms. The showcase is divided into two sections: one comprised of nine images and the other comprised of seven related installations. The two sections form a complete work that creates an ambiance of a “garden”; whether it is the installations that make up the space or the moving images – both serve as clues for the audience to “decode” the exhibition’s theme and symbols. \nGuan Huaibin is currently the president\, professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. He has participated in several important international art exhibitions\, and his works have been collected by several art institutions. Guan Huaibin excels in deconstructing and absorbing the traditional cultural elements and modes of perception into his own language system and creative structure of his works. By incorporating Chinese classical garden aesthetics into his spatial installations\, the works are permeated with an alternative temperament of Chinese contemporary art. \nIn order to offer visitors a more in depth understanding of Guan Huaibin’s works\, the organizer will hold a series of activities\, including a guided tour of MAM\, guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artist”\, among others. The activities allow the audience to travel the spaces between installations and to experience the spatial aesthetics and visual enjoyment of installation art. Those interested in participating the guided tours for families on Sundays and “Little Artists” can register through IC’s Activities Registration System. It is all organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organized by the School of Intermedia Arts (SIMA) of the China Academy of Art. \nWhen: November 2–February 24\, 2018 \nWhere: Special Exhibition Room\, 3/F\, Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, please visit MAM website or call them on +853 8791 9814

SUMMARY:Fleeting Speeds: Photography Exhibition by Ricardo Meireles
DESCRIPTION:Fleeting Speeds is an exhibition by Portuguese artist Ricardo Meireles. According to the artist\, its purpose is to show that “the world moves on and on\, changes and evolves”. The project presented here tends to synthesize a way of observing the city. The important thing is to realize where we live\, the memories and identity that this place has. People are constantly on the move while these spaces tend to be permeable. \nIntroducing a moment of pause within these urban flows into Macau makes it possible\, once again\, to get involved and absorb the environment that in some way has been ignored and/or disregarded. “We allow ourselves to observe through elements of the city\, in social\, cultural and contextual means in connections within transit spaces\, whether they are streets\, squares\, alleys\, courtyards and at various moments the variation in scales\, speeds of movement and transport that converge\, diverge\, by whatever means; pedestrian\, bicycle\, motorcycle\, automobile\, buses. Stop\, look and observe”\, Meireles states. The exhibition is opened to public at Creative Macau gallery. \n \nThe exhibition is divided into three different sections. There is photography\, which registers the movement of the pedestrian flows\, in a testimony that focuses on a certain perennial element of the city\, whose characteristics of which it is part of the local memory\, of its identity as façades\, fences\, symbolisms where people’s movement fades\, movement in the city at different points. The second part focuses on video resulting from a search to understand how the urban movement is processed\, sporadic flows in different places of Macau\, slow\, other fast ones with greater volume of people who pass\, wander\, seek. On the other hand\, other times when that section of street there is without more register of people. The third and last section is of installation results from photos taken around Macau\, in search of characteristics of the place\, parts of forgotten memories\, the process of time about things\, what surrounds us. Shown in individual panel formats\, these images are presented in a plural context. In front of these images\, suspended acrylic slides makes a mediation between what is observed and who observes. Finding a means of recognizing the images through a half-reflecting filter that lets it transpire at the same time reflects the observer. “I watch\, I’m a part” is its motto. \nWhen: December 3–31\, 2018 \nWhere: Creative Macau\, G/F Macau Cultural Centre Building\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Ju Ming’s Sculptures at MGM Cotai
DESCRIPTION:MGM is committed to promoting art and culture to the public. With the belief of art and life are inseparable\, MGM presents Celebrating Life – Ju Ming Living World Sculpture Selling Exhibition to kick start as the company’s first public art project of the year. From now to April 7\, the internationally renowned artist’s Living World series will be exhibited at MGM Cotai. The series features Ju’s survey on human relationships with an emphasis on the aesthetic concept of merging art into life\, and life into art\, which is in perfect harmony with MGM’s mission in making art more accessible to the public. \nThe Living World series is one of the most iconic series of Ju Ming’s\, conveying Ju’s exploration on human sentiments using vivid and lively images and postures\, with numbers of works particularly depicting traditional family values. Inspired by his multicultural experiences and over 30 years of development\, Ju Ming applies both traditional and contemporary materials\, such as wood and stainless steel in this series. The wood carving sculpture is the most significant\, for Ju carves directly on a log with his signature sharp cutting strokes that create one-of-a-kind works. MGM is proud to exhibit over 40 pieces of unique wood carvings made by Ju\, including painted wood\, black and white painted wood\, as well as wood relief sculptures\, making it an extraordinary\, must-see exhibition. \nJu has begun working on his Living World Series with his colorful Painted Wood sculptures. During his early apprenticeship\, Ju was trained in the practice of painted carvings\, continuing this traditional legacy. He also assimilates traditional wood carving techniques with modern abstraction to depict social phenomena\, and preserve traditional virtue of filial piety. \nJu later shifted his focus to black and white Painted Wood and Wood Relief sculptures\, as well as sculptures left in their original raw wood color. His intention in using a minimalist palette is to give more attention to the carving of the works\, capturing the essence and gestures of his subjects in the series. The artist also twists and rolls stainless steel sheets\, giving the stainless steel sculptures a complementary sense of hardness and softness\, like the wood sculptures. \nBorn in 1938\, Ju Ming is an internationally renowned Asian artist and master of modern sculpture whose works provide inspirational and exquisite forms\, reminiscent of strokes used in Asian painting and calligraphy. The maturity of his sculptural language and aesthetic incorporates the free expression of forms and feelings\, and embraces simplicity and environmentalism. Ju channels his life philosophy and approach in his works\, by reconciling the traditional woodcarver’s technique with modern techniques and modes of abstraction. \n \nFrom 1953\, Ju was under the tutelage of master wood carver Lee Chinchuan studying painting and wood carving techniques. From 1968 to 1976\, he studied modern sculpture with Yuyu Yang\, a significant sculptor and pioneer of the modern art movement. In 1980\, Ju left Taiwan for New York City to pursue more opportunities overseas. Ju’s works from his Taichi Series and Living World Series were exhibited in New York City during this time. In 1999\, Ju announced the official opening of the Ju Ming Museum in Taipei. The mission of the museum is to record\, document and archive the process of his art-making\, as a home of the artist’s collections and to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of art. \nJu is truly an internationally recognized award-winning artist. In 1998\, he was awarded the Fok Ying Tung Award by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation in Hong Kong. In 2002\, he won the 2nd Enku Grand Award in Gifu\, Japan. In 2003\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Art\, Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. In 2004\, he was conferred the 24th National Cultural Award of R.O.C.\, which is a lifetime achievement award and the greatest honor presented to members of the cultural sector whose lives are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art in Taiwan. In 2007\, he was awarded the 18th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize\, Japan. In 2011\, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor for Literature\, Chinese University of Hong Kong. \nWhen: January 14–April 7\, 2019 \nWhere: Rippling Gallery\, Roaming Gallery & Floating Gallery\, Spectacle\, MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, go to MGM Cotai’s website or check the exhibition’s catalogue

SUMMARY:No Where There – Photography Works by Tang Jing
DESCRIPTION:1844 Macau Photography Art Space will host a photography exhibition by artist Tang Jing\, ‘No Where There – Works by Tang Jing’ January 15 to March 16\, 2019 at 1844. \n‘No Where There’ is a series of images photographed by Tang Jing since 2013. The artist selects the shooting places through careful selection and research. The creation process includes interviews\, video recordings and on-site experiences etc. ‘No Where There’\, which means ‘beautiful new world’ in the Chinese title\, is inspired from one of the three most famous dystopian novels\, ‘Brave New World’ (1932) by the English author Aldous Huxley. It is a novel set in London in 2540 CE\, depicting the writer’s imagination about the future of the high-tech civilization\, where there was no pain\, but happiness. The novel depicted how such a ‘perfect world’ has brought huge influences on the mental world of people and their social civilization\, the novel profoundly reflected the relationship between individual and collective\, as well as problems between freedom\, order and conditioning. \nSixteen images from the ‘No Where There’ series will be shown in this exhibition. The artist aims to explore the relationship between architecture\, power and aesthetics. Through documenting the situations brought by tourism consumption and rapid urban development under the appearance of beautiful cityscapes\, this series reflects a mass aesthetics trend and a lack of cultural identity recognition. Tang have photographed many European-style buildings in different cities in China\, such as the ‘Arc de Triomphe’ on Guanggu road in Wuhan\, Luodian Town in Shanghai\, ‘Eiffel Tower’ in Hangzhou etc\, recording the phenomenon of mimicry in architecture after the rapid urban and economic development. \n \nThe architectural styles of the replica buildings documented are different\, including styles of northern European town\, international landmarks\, etc. Not only does it show the replication of their aesthetic appearances\, but also presenting the difference between its imitation appearance and its inner function in public areas. The phenomenon exhibits the aesthetic demand on behalf of the local citizens\, their expectation on lifestyle\, identity and collective values. Observing these ongoing changes in the cities\, by means of new documentary photography\, the artist recorded the situation in acuity\, within this context of urban development in China today: ‘Who built these buildings? Who are the users? What were the aesthetic views of the people who built them? How will people with such views affect Chinese society today?’ \nWhen: January 15–March 16\, 2019 \nWhere: 1844 Macau Photography Art Space\, 17 Rua do Infante\, Edf. SUMMARY:Idle Hands are the Devil's Playthings: Exhibition by Crystal W. M. Chan
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of AFA this year has opened! This exhibition is the first solo exhibition for Crystal W. M. Chan after she completed her degree in School of Visual Arts. As an Asian\, female artist\, she drew attention with her work while studying at art school in New York. In 2017 she won the Will Barnet Award issued by the New York National Club and held two solo exhibitions in New York in 2018. \nLeaving Macau to go to New York\, through the four years of studying and hard work\, Crystal has blurred the boundaries of the shapes she creates. It is her way of breaking through limitations. The creation of her works are more matured\, though the appearance of her paintings is somehow ambiguous but the emotional power of her work has revealed itself in clarity during this process of artistic pursuit. Alice Kok is the curator for this exhibition. \nWhen: February 27\, 2019–April 2\, 2019 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free entrance \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Space Reader: Fill in The One Hour
DESCRIPTION:Space Reader was formed in 2016 by a group of young creative persons in Taiwan\, aimed at carrying out collective creative experiments and research projects\, with different types of creators being invited for each project. The concerned creative form is a combination of installation and performance\, where an installation becomes not just an object to be appreciated\, but an artwork that connects with the audience and performers\, as well as with their actual shared experiences from impromptu interactions. The aim is to explore the possibilities of different read/response forms in the actual space and in the creator’s inner space through the lightest yet most spontaneous bodily actions. \nAmerican dancer and film director Yvonne Rainer said: “No dance work is a single idea or narrative\, but rather a subtle blend of diverse elements\, determining the nature of the whole experience.” This idea coincides with the concept of Space Reader’s projects. Each creator searches for the sketching of his/her body through space or objects. We are not dancers\, but we dance in space. A performance installation or an installation performance? The exhibition includes works by artists Huang Xuan\, Yao Min and Jiang Yu-Jie from Taiwan\, and is curated by Cai Guo Jie. \nWhen: March 17–April 28\, 2019 (closed on Mondays) \nWhere: Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site\, 15 R. do Volong\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information and details\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com\, check their website or the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Occupying the Imaginary – Works by Alexandre Marreiros
DESCRIPTION:As described by Alice Kok\, the curator\, the Chinese title of the exhibition “想入非非” in which “非非” is a Buddhist term (in Sanskrit: naiva-saṃjñin-nāsaṃjñin). It describes a world in which the yogi in the ancient Indian cosmology survived after death. If one is to believe that consciousness continues in the world beyond\, will it be a mysterious detachment between yin and yang? \nOr will it be a chaos of nothingness? This space between existence and non-existence is precisely the creative territory of the architect and artist Alexandre Marreiros. As an architect\, Alex describes his profession as rigorous and rigid. His work is to provide people a physical place to inhabit. It is a pragmatic process of problem solving. However\, as an artist\, Alex wants to go beyond the concrete. He likes to turn reality into a playground under his pen\, with which he creates a space of eccentric images\, positioning between the real and the imagined. \nTak Chun Macau Art Garden and AFA are the exhibition partners of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival. To celebrate 21st March as World Poetry Day\, A Multimedia Celebration\, organized by the Script Road\, will take place in Tak Chun Macau Art Garden. The program includes performances such as dancing\, singing\, video screening and poetry reading\, carried out by artists Chen Dongdong\, Crystal Chan\, Elias Choi-Buttinger\, José Drummond\, Lu Weipeng\, Weng Teng Choi-Buttinger\, Yam Gon Macau Outersky Poet Association (Bruce Lou\, Elvis Mok\, Jojo Wong\, Pansy Lau\, Fina Liu\, Karolis Chan). \nWhen: March 22–April 26\, 2019 \nWhere: Macau Art Garden\, 265 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2836 6064\, send an email to info@afamacau.com\, or browse through their website

SUMMARY:KAWS:HOLIDAY in Hong Kong
DESCRIPTION:The 37-meter-Companion\, KAWS’ largest reclined sculptural endeavor to date is docking in Victoria Harbour during “Hong Kong Arts Month” from 22 to 31 March! Following the massive excitement generated in Seoul and Taipei\, the KAWS:HOLIDAY installation will be making its third stop in Hong Kong\, at the iconic Victoria Harbour! \nWorking once again with longtime collaborator AllRightsReserved\, KAWS:HOLIDAY in Hong Kong is a 37-meter long monumental Companion\, a signature character of KAWS’. Made in the new grey colorway\, in a relaxed and reclined position\, the KAWS:HOLIDAY Hong Kong is set to be shown at the end of this month\, coinciding with the annual “Hong Kong Arts Month” where the city is filled with many vibrant art and cultural events. Presented by Asia Miles and fully supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board\, KAWS:HOLIDAY welcomes all local and international collectors\, travellers\, art-lovers and the like. and invites them to slow down\, relax and enjoy the moment. \nKAWS:HOLIDAY Hong Kong will go on display in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour from 22 to 31 March\, where it can be viewed up close on the Central and Western District Promenade–Central Section. Considered one of the most relevant artists of his generation\, KAWS engages audiences beyond the museums and galleries in which he regularly exhibits. His prolific body of influential work straddles the worlds of art and design to include paintings\, murals\, large-scale sculptures\, street art\, and graphic and product design. Over the last two decades KAWS has built a successful career with work that consistently shows his formal agility as an artist\, as well as his underlying wit\, irreverence\, and affection for our times. He often draws inspiration and appropriates from pop culture animations to form a unique artistic vocabulary for his works across various mediums. \n \nNow admired for his larger-than-life sculptures and hard-edge paintings that emphasize line and color\, KAWS’ cast of hybrid cartoon and human characters are perhaps the strongest examples of his exploration of humanity. His refined graphic language revitalizes figuration with big\, bold gestures and keen\, playful intricacy. As seen in his collaborations with global brands\, KAWS’ imagery possesses a sophisticated humor and reveals a thoughtful interplay with consumer products. Highly sought-after by collectors inside and outside of the art world\, KAWS’ artworks\, with their broad appeal\, has made him a uniquely prominent artist in today’s culture. \nWhen: March 22–31\, 2019 \nWhere: Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour\, Hong Kong \nHow much: Free admission \nTo know more about this event\, click here and about the artist\, go to his website

SUMMARY:Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government has been dedicated to collecting\, preserving\, displaying and studying Macau art works\, with the aim to promote local art to the public\, illustrating its developments and the artistic spirit of different eras. Since its introduction to Macau\, watercolour has been an important creative medium for local artists. Painters from different times have left us excellent works that have influenced later generations. Contemporary painter Lai Ieng is one of the best influencers\, who\, with his love for Macau landscapes and passion for painting\, has offered the city a rich trove of artworks. This exhibition\, Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng\, features 32 of his landscape watercolours. By following the artist’s sketching footprints\, through his keen observations and subtle brushstrokes\, visitors can discover the beauty of Macau’s scenic small alleys as well as the charm of local life. \nLai Ieng is reputed in Macau\, as well as in Mainland China and overseas\, for his watercolours of portraits and landscapes. He has studied painting under Lok Cheong (1923–2006) and also under Cheong Io Sang and Tam Chi Sang (1920–2007) among others. Apparently he acquired his painting skills in Macau but in fact he benefited from the teachings by Wang Zhaomin (1908–2003)\, known as “poet of watercolour”\, when he was studying with Wong Io Wa\, Lio Man Cheong and Lok Hei in Guangzhou back in the 1980s. \nLai developed his art during China’s reform and opening up period\, when the country opened to the outside world\, enabling Macao’s art lovers to gradually take part in Mainland’s art development trends\, see the world in a clearer light and have a better grasp of Chinese traditions\, besides forming their own artistic views. In the process Lai has been examining the roles of art in people’s life. When he was sketching and painting by himself he also taught painting\, and he and his students would accompany each other in art creation\, in spiritual support for one another. \nWhen: March 22–June 16\, 2019 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check MAM’s website
