SUMMARY:Macau Experimental Video Festival (EXiM 2020)
DESCRIPTION:Called the “2+1+2 Program”\, EXiM 2020 kicks off with “Straightforward – Works by Chen Qiang” and “Heart to Heart – Experimental Video Exhibition”. Since 2018\, EXiM has been presented in exhibition format instead of screening. Works will not merely be screened\, but also be displayed via video installation. Doing so can better reflect the diversity in the creation of contemporary experimental image. \n“The year 2020 started in a weird way\, with the smartest creatures on the planet beginning to fear a virus emerging from nowhere absurdly. It is impossible to present an exhibition without exploring our current anxiety at this moment in time. When sorting out my past works\, I found that my thoughts on the living environment were buried in the “evolution” of my art. With the passage of time\, I have been constantly upgrading the accuracy of my focus in my works. These pieces directly and straightforwardly depict individual struggle and revel in the social tide.”\, the author of the works presented at “Straightforward”\, Chen Qiang\, explains. \nThe Chinese title of the exhibition comes from an old Hong Kong movie\, Sworn Brothers (Chinese:《肝膽相照》\, whose exact meaning is ‘to be trusted friends treating each other with sincerity’.) I chose the title for this event\, a showcase of Chinese experimental videos. In the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, I invite artists whose cities have just endured (or are still experiencing) long days of panic. SUMMARY:Memory of the Past – Exhibition of the Macao Museum Postcards Collection
DESCRIPTION:Divided in two areas\, namely “Macao in the Old Days” and “Today’s Macao”\,  the exhibition features a total of over 180 selected postcards and associated items from the museum’s collection\, leading visitors to get to know the city’s “Coastal Scenery”\, “Elegant Architecture” and “Lush Gardens” in those bygone days\, as well as the characteristics of the small city\, including “Interlaced Lanes”\, “Accessible Transportation”\, “Recreation and Entertainment” and “Outstanding Talents and Profound Culture”\, thereby manifesting Macau’s social and cultural nature highlighting the co-existence of different ethnics and cultures. \nIn order to complement the exhibition\, multimedia installations and an education area will be available in the venue\, allowing visitors an overview of the changes in Macau’s landscape in an interactive manner. Free souvenir postcards will also be distributed onsite with free postal service provided for a limited number of visitors on a first-come\, first-served basis; each person may enjoy the service once only. SUMMARY:2020 ARTFEM Women Artists International Biennial of Macau
DESCRIPTION:As the only women artist international biennial\, ARTFEM targets to contribute to greater visibility of women artists in the contemporary world and to a (re)discovery of the art of women who have played a socially and culturally significant role\, gearing local arts towards international standards and bringing more dynamic and plentiful artistic experiences to the public and tourists. The work by women artists is increasingly showcased internationally; other Biennales of the past also had the merit to expose the need for female institutional representation\, even if these outstanding projects did not survive the test of time. ARTFEM is devoted to being an exception\, by maintaining the project in a city renowned as the location of important international events. \nFollowing the success of ARTFEM 2018\, with over 100 works from established and emerging artists from the five continents\, ARTFEM 2020 features 142 works created between 2018 and 2020 by 98 women from 22 countries who are working actively as artists. 13 of the participating artists are from China\, 16 from Portugal\, 31 from Macau\, seven hail from Hong Kong\, two from South Korea\, one from Japan\, but also from Indonesia\, France\, Spain\, the US\, Canada\, and many others. \nThis multimedia show displays painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, installation\, drawings\, silkscreen on diverse media\, video\, and photography. The exhibition aims to bring to the fore urgent discourses on the environment\, including its protection or devastation\, the relationship of humanity with nature\, while containing a localizing “gaze” onto social aspects that result from its location in Macao SAR\, the Pearl River Delta Region and the COVID-19 pandemic crisis that affected the world since December 2019. \nThe curatorial team dispersed the show in the Macau Peninsula to allow a “biennale feeling” to its viewers\, who wander around town while searching for artworks. While the curatorial intention considered occupying and intervening in the public space\, the COVID-19 crisis has provoked that the exhibitions happen solely indoors. \nARTFEM’s curatorial team is comprised of Arch. Carlos Marreiros\, President of ARTFEM Organizing Committee and Head Curator for this edition\, and co-curated by China-based Angela Li\, who brings a Chinese-focus; the Macau-based duo Alice Kok and James Chu\, who selected local Macau artists as well as Hong Kong ones\, and Leonor Veiga\, a Macau SAR Permanent Resident who curated\, along with Carlos Marreiros the international selection of artists. In the meantime\, renowned Chinese artist Xiang Jing and Macau artist Un Chi Iam are the Godmothers of 2020 ARTFEM. \n2020 ARTFEM Women Artists International Biennial of Macau is open on September 30th until December 13th\, 2020\, and will be held in four separate art spaces in Macau\, including Albergue SCM\, Former Municipal Cattle Stable\, Galeria Lisboa\, and Orient Foundation with a mix of seminars\, workshops\, and tours\, so to encourage the participation of artists\, public and tourists. DESCRIPTION:At this exhibition\, the artist\, Kim Mok\, displays more than twenty watercolor works\, which record some of the scenes she saw while traveling. The works also depict some old streets and narrow alleys in Macau and show her feelings for those old buildings that have disappeared. Last year\, she chose to return to the city where she lived\, Brighton\, and hold her first solo exhibition. Her purpose is to take Brighton as a starting point for her art exhibition. This time\, she wants to continue this exhibition in Macau. In addition\, to show the public scenes that she recorded during her travel\, she also hopes to take this opportunity to promote watercolor art and let more people get to know her and her works. \nTired of an immutable life? Hate that you always go the same way and make the same mistakes? A trip away challenges your own habits and opens up your perspective and flexibility in looking at things. It lets you temporarily break out of that boring routine\, re-plan your own direction\, and inject new energy into your future”\, the exhibition’s curator explains. \nKim Mok was born and grew up in Macau. She obtained a master’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Saint Joseph and a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts of Macao Polytechnic Institute. She has loved painting since she was a child. She has a special fondness for watercolor art and has explored in the field of watercolour for many years. \nDuring the past decade\, she participated actively in painting exhibitions organized by art organizations and also in public painting competitions in Macau\, she has won various awards from these painting competitions. In order to focus on research and improve her watercolor technique\, she gave up her job four years ago and went to the UK to study and travel to broaden her horizons. During her studies\, she often went to art galleries to practice painting with local artists and exchange painting techniques. DESCRIPTION:Ark-Association of Macau Art (the “AAMA”) exclusively presents an art program entitled “Art Power Jamming”\, under the theme of “Friendship Chapter”. The program\, which is sponsored by the Macao Foundation\, and supported by the Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District and 10 Fantasia\, features seven unique shows presented by six Macau artists (members of AAMA) with diverse backgrounds. The exhibition series runs from August 2020 until July 2021. \nVanda is a Macau designer\, illustrator\, and freelance painter. SUMMARY:"Into The Light" – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong
DESCRIPTION:“Into The Light – Solo Exhibition of Sisi Wong” is Macau artist Sisi Wong’s solo exhibition to take place in AFA Macau. Organized by the Macau Art For All Society\, this showcase is part of the “New Generation．New Media” – Art Exhibition Series. Sisi Wong was born in Macau and moved to Taiwan when her childhood. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Fine Art Department from the National Taiwan University of Arts\, majoring in mixed media. She now lives in Macau and engages in visual art education. \nHer type of creation is mainly photography\, image installation\, and video art\, combining “light”\, “image” and “visual perception” as the main axis of creation\, looking for the essence of the “consciousness”; and “self-existence”; belonging to the individual in the photographic vocabulary. The solo exhibition “Into The Light”; was started by the work “Pantheon”; shot in Rome\, which shows that she is trying to express herself while looking back to the art history of light by taking the physical and mental inspiration from this majestic historical building. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program: A Route – Feng Xiaofeng Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Feng Xiaofeng\, the current artist-in-residence at Ox Warehouse is a young sculptor. In recent years\, with his creation focusing on multimedia interventions into sculptures\, he uses musical instruments\, installations\, sounds\, furniture or everyday objects as well as other elements and methods to create artworks\, re-deconstructing their attributes and definitions\, thus blurring the objects’ original attributes\, and with artistic languages\, turning them into things of new definitions. Through exploring sound and visual arts\, he defines his own artistic direction with sounds\, time and image. \nIn this residency program\, Feng Xiaofeng makes an exploration using sound art\, mainly using such elements as local opera or objects\, through the movement of the record player. When the original track deviates\, new sounds are produced. The artist then records the movement and sounds in video\, and finally accomplishes his work in the format of video installation. DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art (MAM\, from the Portuguese acronym)\, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, hosts the exhibition “Wandering across the Landscape: Collection of the Macao Museum of Art”. By bringing together the artistic footprints left in Macau by artists from different periods and regions\, this exhibition showcases the city’s historical landscapes between the 17th and the 21st centuries and gives an overview of Macao-themed artistic creations in the modern and contemporary era. \nThe exhibition is divided into three sections: Section 1\, “Topographical Images: Prints from the 17th to the 19th Centuries” features prints produced based on original topographical images and showcases Macau landscapes through these faithful records. Section 2\, “Chinnery’s Shadow: The Artist\, His Companions and Students” features the works by George Chinnery – the most influential Western painter in Southern China during the 19th century\, and his friends who sojourned in Macao\, including Thomas Watson\, William Prinsep and Auguste Borget\, as well as his apprentice in Macau\, Baptista; these works serve as a record of their memories of the city and their precious friendship. Section 3\, “Traces of Modern Art: Works from the 20th to the 21st Centuries” features works by 12 artists from Europe\, the United States\, Japan\, Hong Kong and Guangdong\, China\, which offer more diverse perspectives in their representation of Macau. \nThis exhibition has an unprecedented scale with over 160 impressive artworks and is open to the public from today until 29 August 2021. Source: ICM \nThe Rebirth in the Spring Breeze: Art Exhibition of He Duoling showcases nearly 50 pieces and sets of sketches and oil paintings which cover various periods of He’s artistic pursuit\, including his new works from 2019. From these exhibits\, visitors will catch a glimpse of his artistic development and feel his vigorous and endless creativity. \nThis exhibition also showcases House with No Roof and Wild Garden\, Woman and Wall\, the large-scale paintings completed by He last year. He has a fondness for architecture; he contemplated and constructed the relation between the figures and the architectural environment in his Labyrinth Tower series\, and he designed the He Duoling Museum by himself. He thinks highly of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s ‘less-is-more’ approach and has integrated the architectural philosophy into his artistic language: using subtractive techniques\, he conveys the subtlety and fullness in the refined yet simple composition of his paintings. \nThe figures depicted by He are mostly ordinary people from real life\, some of whom are his friends or family members (to draw their portraits requires the artist’s projection of private feelings). Nevertheless\, these figures have transcended the mundane reality since they are elevated in the realm of art – they are who they are\, but also no longer as such; they have already entered the artist’s imaginative context\, evoking a sense of mysterious vagueness and a metaphorical\, poetic quality. Except for the Wild Flowers series that he is currently obsessed with\, he mainly portrays human beings\, including the elderly and babies\, but mostly young women. \nWomen are undoubtedly the subject that can best represent the beauty of divine creation\, and women who ‘lead us to transcendence’ are his favourite subject. In his works under the Rabbit series\, such as The Rabbit Runs Downhill\, The Rabbit Dreams of the Apple\, Ophelia the Rabbit and Shalott the Rabbit\, the background is shrouded in blurry mist; figures in the paintings\, especially Ophelia and Shalott\, have been transplanted from the Western context to the specific ambience created by the artist and therefore attributed an indefinite quality of polysemy to the works\, leaving viewers room for multiple interpretations. Meanwhile\, their bodies are frail and fragile like the exquisite eggshell porcelain that can easily break at the merest touch\, just as beauty itself is delicate\, elusive and transient. \nBlue Bird 1984 (repainted in 2009)​\, by He Duoling. He rose to fame in the 1980s and his works such as Spring Winds have Awoken\, Youth and The Crow is Beautiful have brought a fresh visual experience to viewers and caused a sensation in the art scene. During his artistic career spanning over four decades\, He has always lived in Chengdu\, Sichuan province–the city where he was born\, except for a short journey to America. \nInstead of yearning for the so-called ‘centre’\, He Duoling chose to stay at the periphery and adhere to his artistic path. Distancing himself from the bustling\, chaotic and restrictive ‘centre’\, he instead delved into his own world without any distraction and roamed the realm of art in response to the call of beauty\, and reached his self-determined centre in total freedom and relaxation. DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Macau New Woman Contemporary Art Exhibition – Sen-SEX-bility and Inter-SEX-tuality is organized by the New Woman Development Association of Macao and co-organized by 480.0 Gender & Art Space (Hong Kong). “Sen-SEX-bility”\, is using our ability to be aware and to perceive\, to feel the initial collision of “sex” that brings to our sense and find the purest consciousness that “sex” brings to the human. \n“Inter-SEX-tuality”\, is the cognition of sexual sensation\, sexual perception\, sexual memory\, sexual imagination\, and sexual thinking. As life blooms and withers\, the growth of each life is a unique blooming process\, and we as the host of these blooming lives\, let us enlighten the desire to gain knowledge and become an “Inter-SEX-tual” person. “Inter-SEX-tuality” is about exploring through messages from human senses to learn about “sex” with our cognitive ability. \nThis exhibition brings together a group of outstanding new women artists from the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macau Greater Bay Area. They will create their work under the theme “Sen-SEX-bility and Inter-SEX-tuality” with different media\, materials\, and expressions to present the feeling and desire for knowledge about “sex”\, and provide an appropriate and reasonable understanding and communication of “sex” with the audience. \nNo matter an adult or a child\, nobody should be ashamed to discuss about “sex”. We may have a more open attitude and use an artistic perspective to appreciate\, cognize\, understand\, feel\, and share about the intimate relationship between “sex” and humans.\nThere will be a series of interactive activities during the exhibition\, including the opening ceremony\, Art Jam\, artist’s sharing session\, workshops\, and guided tours\, to strengthen the audience’s understanding of the theme\, the artists and their work\, as well as trigger reflection from different perspectives. \nMeanwhile\, there will be an interactive area\, to encourage the audience to mingle with art and be part of the exhibition by creating their own work under the theme. Events include an art jam session improvisation–with artists Frog Wong\, Heidi Ng\, Kit Lee\, and Weng Ian Tai. SUMMARY:Notes By The Sea – A Shi Wanwan Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chinese artist Shi Wanwan is invited to hold a solo exhibition as part of Ox Warehouse’s Artist-in-Residence program and first held in Mong-Ha Villas (Vivendas Verdes). Shi Wanwan is a conceptual artist based on the creation of a specific context. Graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts with a master’s degree\, he is currently studying for Ph.D. in the School of Intermedia Art of the China Academy of Art. \nThis exhibition is inspired by Macau’s special place between the 16th century in the Discovery Age and the 19th century when the world was undergoing tremendous transformations\, presenting historical marks left on its citizens today. During his residence in Macau\, Shi Wanwan tried to observe and communicate with the city\, the result is a series of Macau-inspired works completed for this exhibition. SUMMARY:“A Way to Exist Away to Exist” – Works by Alice Kok
DESCRIPTION:Macau artist Alice Kok showcases her solo exhibition “A Way to Exist\, Away to Exist” – Works by Alice Kok in AFA Macau on November 21. In A Way to Exist\, Away to Exist\, Alice Kok presents a body of work whose expression is intrinsic in its subject\, one that explores exchanges between spiritual practice and community using image making\, objects\, interviews and print. The new works in this exhibition take a recursive and imaginative approach so as to reposition the artist’s relationship experiences of identity\, writing and landscape—both those personal to the artist and those shared with others. The results of these experiential moments as shared by Kok are personal and direct invitations\, but they also invite a wider community to contemplate her activities. \nThe artist’s photographs of Macau and Tibet consider the production of cultural and cross-cultural identities. As we rethink these subjects in the wake of a global pandemic\, Kok’s partially distorted images invite us to consider anew our relationships with movement\, communication and far-off places. These broad terms—abstractions to many of us—have direct personal significance for the artist\, whose own family unit is currently separated between these two places. \nAlice Kok’s solo exhibition organized by the Macau Art For All Society is part of the “Perpetual Impermanence” – Established Artists Exhibitions Series. DESCRIPTION:Local artists Lam Un Mei and Ye Jiehao are winners of the Grand Prize of the Jury Award in the Collective Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2018 and the Collective Exhibition of Macao Artists 2019\, respectively. The Cultural Affairs Bureau organizes the “Exhibition of Works by Lam Un Mei and Ye Jiehao – Grand Prize Winners Artists of Jury Award in Collective Exhibition of Macao Artist” to showcase the creative achievements of the two artists\, thereby encouraging local artists to move forward and pursue artistic creation. \nThis exhibition features a total of 38 pieces (sets) of prints and seal carvings by the two artists. Lam Un Mei is known for displaying a strong personality in her prints. Her work The Fourth of the Wall Series won the Grand Prize of the Jury Award\, the Young Artist Award and the Excellent Artwork Award in the Collective Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2018. This exhibition presents 15 prints by Lam Un Mei\, including her award-winning work in 2018 and new works created over the past two years; in particular\, the work “Small Home in Big City” Series\, inspired by the artist’s “reclusive” state during the novel coronavirus pneumonia\, conveys her sentiments and reflections on life. \nYe Jiehao specializes in Chinese calligraphy\, painting and seal carving. His work 24 Stories of Filial Piety won the Grand Prize of the Jury Award and the Excellent Artwork Award in the Collective Exhibition of Macao Artists 2019. DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by the Macao Museum of Art\, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, and the Palace Museum\, “Stately Demeanour: Costumes of Qing Emperors and Empresses from the Collection of the Palace Museum” displays around 90 sets of costumes and accessories of Qing emperors and empresses\, including Bright-Yellow Cotton Dragon Robe with Satin Embroidery of Polychrome Clouds and Golden Dragons which demonstrates the power of Emperor Qianlong\, Emperor Xianfeng’s Armour Suit which represents his military power\, and the hair accessory inlaid with kingfisher feathers and jewels that highlights the empress’ grace and glamour. \nThe Qing dynasty was “built using bows and arrows\, with horse-riding and archery laying the foundation”. The Qing government occupied the Central Plains with their military might\, which can explain the retention of clothing and adornments of hunting nomads for easy horse-riding and shooting\, while also absorbing elements from Han people’s clothing and culture. A new clothing system was therefore established to ‘distinguish people’s ranks and reveal their positions and achievements’. \nCostumes of the Qing dynasty feature an integration of the Chinese nation’s heritage formed over thousands of years\, such as the ritual and etiquette system\, religious beliefs\, traditions and customs\, and a blend of hunting and farming cultures\, exerting great influence on the development of modern clothing. SUMMARY:Jao Tsung-I’s Paintings and Calligraphy from the Collection of the Macao Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Jao Tsung-I Academy\, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau\, is now hosting the exhibition “Jao Tsung-I’s Painting and Calligraphy from the Collection of the Macao Museum of Art”\, in which 13 selected works from the collection are displayed to give the public a glimpse into his erudition and diverse creations. \nProfessor Jao Tsung-I has devoted immense support to Macau’s culture and generously donated 30 pieces (sets) of paintings and calligraphic works in 2011 for the permanent collection of the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). In order to promote Professor Jao’s artistic accomplishments to the public\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau presents his works in the exhibition rooms on the ground and first floors of the Jao Tsung-I Academy\, which were created in various styles and with a wide range of subject matter\, including traditional Chinese calligraphy in four fundamental scripts and paintings on landscapes\, flowers\, trees\, bamboo\, stones\, Taoist and Buddhist figures. \nProfessor Jao Tsung-I was a world-renowned sinologist who has made prominent achievements and outstanding contributions in the fields of literature\, art\, and academia\, and is hailed as “a leading figure of the three disciplines”. He advocated a concurrent pursuit in academia and art; in addition to the techniques\, he learned from predecessors\, his academic knowledge and observation of natural scenery also play an essential role in his artistic creation. In his calligraphy and paintings\, he has inherited the remarkable literati traditions from the Ming and Qing dynasties. His Chinese paintings comprise a wide variety of themes including landscapes\, human figures\, flowers\, and birds; some of his works emulate the traditional schools of techniques while some are landscape sketches of the world’s beautiful scenery\, and some are creations of his own. The exhibition Stately Demeanour: Costumes of Qing Emperors and Empresses from the Collection of the Palace Museum features 87 sets of costumes of the Qing Dynasty of the Palace Museum collection\, showcasing the costume system of the Qing court as well as the cultural connotations and aesthetic interests of costumes. \nThe Macao Chinese Orchestra presents a free concert “Listen to the Voice of the Chinese”\, at the Company of Jesus Square. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the death of the renowned musician\, Xian Xinghai\, the concert features a number of his musical compositions. Later\, at the same venue\, The Macao Chinese Orchestra joins hands with the prominent Choir of the China National Traditional Orchestra to present Production Cantata\, a choral work of Chinese folk music written during the Anti-Japanese War\, in its entirety\, giving a taste of China’s hundred-year history of struggle. \nThe concert “Celebration of the 21st Anniversary of Macao’s Return to the Motherland – by the China National Peking Opera Company” is set to hit the stage on December 18 and 19\, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. The China National Peking Opera Company presents two Peking operatic pieces\, Female Generals of the Yang Family and A Right Royal Match\, led by Vice President Zhang Yafeng and presented by renowned opera performers Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu\, offering the public an enthralling and inspiring feast of Chinese quintessence. \n \nBesides these\, The Macao Orchestra will also present the “Christmas Concert – Christmas Delight” on 18 and 19 December\, at MGM Cotai\, featuring Taylor’s Christmas Overture\, Tchaikovsky’s excerpts from the Nutcracker Suites. \nThe Macao Cultural Centre is launching the series of activities of “ARTwarming Winter”\, especially catering to kids. The play Little Bath Wonders\, designed for tiny ones aged four to 15 months\, takes place from December 22 to 27. On 25 December\, a brand new family event entitled “Arty Christmas” lights up the Macao Cultural Centre. This arts carnival features a variety of performances and activities including music\, dance\, drama\, interactive storytelling sessions\, backstage visits and handicraft workshops\, celebrating Christmas with the public.
