SUMMARY:Portraits and Busts by Tam Chi Sang Donated to the Macao Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Museum of Art (MAM) has always attached great importance to the gathering\, collection\, collating\, research\, display\, and publication of Macau artists’ works\, to engage the public with the development of art in Macau. Donations from artists and collectors are an essential source of a museum collection. For this reason\, MAM organizes regular exhibitions of the donated works to show both the latest collection and the appreciation to the donors. \nTam Chi Sang (1920–2007)\, an artist and art educator of great stature\, was known as the pioneer of Western painting in Macau. MAM has collected many of his works\, and thanks to the donations of his students in these years\, such as Chou Cheong Hong\, Chio Wai Fu\, and Kwok Wai Kit\, that gradually enrich our collection. This exhibition will showcase a selection of 13 portrait works from the donated collection\, including sketches\, oil paintings\, Chinese paintings\, and sculptures to show his enriched artistic outlook\, his exploration of portrait artworks\, and also to pay tribute to the donors. \nBorn in Yunfu\, Guangdong Province\, Tam studied Chinese painting with renowned local painter Li Xiaoshan in Zhaoqing in his early years and graduated from Zhaoqing Advanced Normal School. Then moved to Macao in 1949 and became a pillar in the local art circles since the 1950s. Tam was active in creation and was good at a watercolor painting\, oil painting\, Chinese painting\, and sculpture. \nThis section exhibits Tam Chi Sang’s self-portraits and self-portrait bust created from the 1970s to the 1990s\, reflecting his exploration and pursuit of artistic style and color applications through the self-portrait practices. His works also stand for the expression of his feelings. Tam Chi Sang was strongly attached to sketching and sketched self-portraits persistently\, reflecting his detailed insight and sophisticated painting skills. The exhibited works highlight a strong artistic appeal by interpreting the inner language hidden in the painter’s image. Drawing on the experiences of the Dutch self-portraitist Rembrandt in using light\, shadow\, color\, and brush-strokes\, Tam constantly pursued subtle changes in artistic language in his self-portrait drawings. Undoubtedly\, it was an important attempt for the development of Western painting in Macao at that time. \nWhen: November 26\, 2021–May 29\, 2022 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:Multi-Prismatic Mutual Views: International Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:As early as 2006\, when Chinese contemporary art was developing vigorously\, namely\, at the stage of constant search for the identity of Eastern culture in the Western context\, the Macao Museum of Art co-organized the exhibition “Microcosmos: Chinese Contemporary Art” with the China Academy of Art. Regarding Macau as the platform for contemporary art\, the China Academy of Art and the Macao Museum of Art interpreted the proposition of the times from such a special visual angle. It is also from that time when Chinese culture was emphasized as the mainstream\, the Chinese and international contemporary arts started to develop and integrate continuously in Macau\, resulting in today’s phenomenon that different contemporary arts co-exist and vitalize one another in Macau. This was not only one of the goals for the opening of the Macao Museum of Art but also the unique developing direction of Macau’s culture. Furthermore\, it was also the cultural significance that Chinese contemporary art needs to exist independently. \nTherefore\, between the China Academy of Art\, the academic forefront of Chinese art\, and the Macao Museum of Art\, where the international visions can be transferred and exchanged\, there is a field of interconnection and cooperation\, as well as cultural experimentation and social aesthetic education. This exhibition is in a sense an academic response to the Microcosmos: Chinese Contemporary Art (2006)\, which took place fifteen years ago at the Macao Museum of Art. Taking ‘history of the present as the perspective of textual research and historical sequence\, this exhibition will question the current context of contemporary art in the country and abroad. In addition to some of the artists who participated in the aforementioned exhibition in 2006\, this exhibition has also invited artists at the forefront of international contemporary art\, media artists from Mainland China\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong and Macau\, as well as the emerging artists in contemporary art. Originated from different societies and artistic creations\, they have repeatedly asked\, verified\, experimented with these questions\, and put these questions into practice. Based on their daily social perceptions\, they have constructed ‘extraordinary’ social resonance and have used their artistic creations to face their ‘near future’ art responsibility directly changing from viewing the world to world views. \nRhythm #03 by Cindy Ng Sio Ieng \nTherefore\, the starting point of this exhibition is a way of viewing; therefore\, the title is ‘Multi-Prismatic Mutual Views’. The prism is not only an energy gathering of high-density information and images\, but also an energy field where various social realities and individual values\, and cultural genes constantly intertwine and collide. The exhibition invited 32 contemporary artists (groups) from different places\, who have themselves formed a multi-pronged and mutual- viewing art scene\, regardless of region\, age structure\, media approach\, or way of expression. The exhibition hopes to highlight the multi prismatic and mutual viewing art scenery of the artists’ experimental creative outlook and to explore new paths in the presentation and study of contemporary art through the professional team of the Macao Museum of Art and the academic discourse of the China Academy of Art. ‘View’ is the new world view formed in the current artistic context. It is also the mutual observation of artists from different cultural contexts. And it is also a window of ‘view’ for cultural exchanges and multicultural coexistence in Macao. Such ‘view’ is derived from the multiple combinations of various cultures from a global perspective. It is not only a game under the control of technology but also the reasoning of continuous self-examination of multiple cultures and history. It is reflective thinking of human life in the pandemic era\, and also the human being’s passion and hesitation about the future. \n‘Multi-Prismatic Mutual Views’ is a metaphor highlighting the artists\, accompanied by physical materials. By constructing a worldview statement in the context of artworks\, the exhibition hopes to confront the current reality of decentralization\, to constantly ‘refract’ the individual positions of artists through their actions\, to question the essential issues of art and society. The multiple interfaces of the prism reflect their diverse value orientations and artistic identities\, allowing the continuous generation and transmission of artistic energy with the continuous ‘refraction’. The exhibition will use a variety of media such as painting\, video\, installation\, and AR/VR to present the experimental creations of artists across cultures and fields in the age of all media. \nThis may not only be an exhibition\, but also a long-waited artistic ‘event’. At this moment and in this context\, Macao has turned her role from the local development to the blending of the context of contemporary art. It is like a polygonal prism. Under the influence of refraction and co-existence\, it has formed an angle of mutual views. From the perspective of mutual relations and under the circumstances of dynamics and blending\, the works will examine contemporary art in the multi-contextual artistic reality\, forming an artistic trend of mutual friction and stimulation\, yet constructing a new mechanism of art production and value identity in the future. Under the ‘multi-prismatic’ effect\, with mutual observation and establishment of artistic references and values\, Macau will become a multi-dimensional interactive cultural jewel of the new China\, which ‘lives toward the sea’. \nWhen: November 25\, 2021–February 6\, 2022 \nWhere: Macao Museum of Art\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:2015-2025 The KUBUS in Fluxus: The Study of Täubner's Cube from Cao Kai
DESCRIPTION:Artist Cao Kai published an initial study about Täubner’s Cube in World Art\, a journal under the Central Academy of Fine Arts\, in which Cao allegorically described the cube as contradictory\, paradoxical\, and inconceivable “KUBUS”. Cao has started an artistic collaboration with the Täubner family from the withered forest in Cologne\, Germany since 2015\, utilizing the cube concept left by Wilfried Täubner to undertake reconstruction — concept reconstruction and image reconstruction. The former is about busting the dependence of installation art on “thing” and its obsession with “ready-made”\, and creating a cube in consciousness with the construction of virtual thinking through meditation\, graphics\, voices (dialogues and monologues)\, texts (writing and poems) and other forms of expressions of ideas. The latter is a space basically constituted by the cube\, and it projects a visual intention with dynamic and static image recording and editing. The expressions of this intention include performance art\, noise art\, occasional art\, and other Fluxus actions and activities. \nThe collaborators participating in this art program by Cao include sinology expert Thomas\, dancer and performing artist Julin-Julia Täubner\, assistants-cum-art students Li Shixian and Gu Jianyu\, and art student Cao Yue that has recently joined the program. In some sense\, the list of collaborators also includes the late Wilfried Täubner — in commemoration of Wilfried\, Cao Kai has named the relevant cube “Täubner’s Cube”. \nTäubner’s Cube\, originated from the conceptual photography of “Cubes” by the late German photographer Wilfried Täubner (1940-1994)\, is a term coined by Chinese artist Cao Kai in 2015\, who has studied and made art creations based on this concept. Wilfried Täubner created a steel cube structure for his images\, comprising six faces that include two perpendicularly-placed mirrors and an open four-sided frame. Täubner placed the cube in different types of spaces\, resulting in a type of contradictory landscape images through the flat conversion of the camera lens. The open frame of the cube divides the space where it is located for the second time\, presenting a fragmented view; the surface of the perpendicularly-placed mirrors plays a dual role of concealment and reflection\, underscoring the effects of displacement and rough connection following division. Thus\, these create a sense of alienation from the unfamiliar landscape. \nWhen: December 10\, 2021–January 9\, 2022 \nWhere: Green Townhouses\, 55-57 Avenida do Coronel Mesquita\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Exhibition Seeing The Light In Black and White
DESCRIPTION:In the course of the history of photography\, among photographers who make it as art\, there have been opposing ideas about texts to explain the images. It is said that a good photograph needs no explanation. If photography is art and art is sufficient\, the image itself must be independent\, transmitting everything through the image without describing it in text. In the beginning\, photography was considered a way to represent reality objectively\, in its pure state\, without being touched up. \nThose images\, beautiful or not\, tell the truth through the look of that “moment”. Later\, in the darkroom\, it was to improve the film\, usually repairing scratches or other flaws in the film. However\, today\, there is no photograph (image) that is not “adjusted” to obtain a result that is closer to what is desirable. Assuming that manipulation is a recurring practice and so habitual\, that by eliminating the undesirable nature of the captured image\, the soul of that “moment” is extinguished. \nIncreasingly\, photographic printing has become technological. The printers use technology as a quick book production process\, accepting only digital or digitized images of the analog film. The tone is corrected according to the author’s taste and demands to the nature of the paper as “compression effects”. \nWhere’s the truth of the nature of the images? Is there a truth? How many are there? Here are six photographers who gave us the answers and to the public’s delight\, present the art of photography in their own style. They created something new and original\, by manipulating the nature of the image or not\, altered\, to “show the truth”. \nWhen: January 13–February 19\, 2022 \nWhere: Creative Macau – Center for Creative Industries\, G/F Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page
