SUMMARY:Illusions and Reflections – Through the Eyes of the Masters
DESCRIPTION:To complement this large-scale international cultural and artistic event\, Wynn is organizing a special exhibition under the theme of Illusions and  Reflections – Through the Eyes of the Masters. The exhibition is being held at Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace and is open to the public for free from now until 31 October\, 2021. The event showcases a wide range of world-renowned masterpieces of Chinese modern art\, with a total of around 400 artistic treasures. \nThis includes a number of precious artworks that have been lost overseas for nearly 40 years and have now returned to China\, which are being presented in Macau for the first time\, as well as two large-scale ceramic installations specially made for Macau. Local residents and visitors will encounter a variety of stunning visual art experiences as they explore each exhibit. \nThe exhibition is comprised of The Abode of Illusions: The Garden of Zhang Daqian and Life Reflection: Contemporary Ceramics of Zhu Legeng. The former is a photographic work of the last garden designed by Chinese master painter Zhang Daqian himself. It was taken by renowned photographer Hu Chongxian\, with Zhang’s inscription and interpretation showing the wonderful aesthetic mood of the Chinese literati. \nMeanwhile\, the latter exhibit features ceramics created by the internationally famous contemporary ceramic artist Zhu Legeng. During his visit with national leaders\, he was inspired to create two majestic environmental installations\, especially for Macau. Read on to find out more! \nConveying the spirit of the lion\, the MGM Special Exhibition “Awakening” is a unique and forward-looking exhibition\, where Chinese artists from all over the world come together to present their creative ideas in Macau. Many artists have taken the imagery of MGM and the lion motif as the theme while combining the cultural significance of the “waking lion” from the Cantonese Lingnan tradition in their artworks. \nThe “Greater Bay Area Art Symposium – Contemporary Dialogues of Chinese Culture Awakening” was held in the MGM Theater on July 16 with an audience of around 300 guests. Top speakers including Pansy Ho\, Calvin Hui\, Wang Huangsheng\, Liu Guofu\, and Xue Song\, came together to discuss on how to awaken the Chinese art and culture\, and explore on its innovation and revival based on the current development of Chinese art. The symposium has also attracted over 140\,000 viewers during its live streams partnering with two popular online media platforms: Artron\, Chief Art Media Partner and Zai Art\, Official Livestreaming Partner. \nAt the symposium\, Curator Calvin Hui said: “MGM’s ‘Chairman’s Collection’ includes paintings and art installations from various important Chinese contemporary artists. Inspired by Eastern aesthetics while immersed in diverse cultural threads and ideas amid an era of globalization\, these artists create a contemporary expression cohering distinctive aesthetics of Chinese art\, blazing their own path apart from the monotonous mainstream discourse. Their artworks enrich and diversify the ecology of Chinese traditional culture\, hence helping to realize the creative transformation of the fine Chinese culture in the Greater Bay Area and contribute to the development of a Cultured Bay Area.” \n \nExhibition “Awakening”\nThe MGM Special Exhibition “Awakening” is one of the core activities of Art Macao. Curated by Calvin Hui\, the exhibition draws from the cultural symbol of the lion and interprets it through contemporary art\, in response to the longstanding historical and cultural roots and to demonstrate cultural confidence in the post-pandemic era. SUMMARY:A Century of Glory: Ceramics\, Poems and Calligraphy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Rui Cunha Foundation inaugurates on Thursday\, July 2nd at 6:00 pm\, the Ceramics\, Poems and Calligraphy Exhibition “A Century of Glory”\, highlighting the month of the Chinese Communist Party’s Centenary\, founded on the 23rd of July\, 1921. The event is co-organized by the Macau Wisdom Humanities Encourage Political Association and the Greater Bay Area Ceramic Art Collection and Exchange Association\, with the support of FRC. \nTo celebrate this historic moment\, 31 pieces of art will be exhibited\, bringing together sculptures created for this event by renowned masters\, but also borrowings from collections of different eras\, with mixed themes and varied techniques\, seeking to show the historical development of ceramic sculpture and the charm of these works over time. \n“The various ceramic works in the exhibition were collected and kindly loaned by the Greater Bay Area Ceramic Art Collection and Exchange Association\,” reveals the artists’ manifest\, with pieces dating from the 1920s\, 1950s\, or 1970s. There are also commemorative works from 2021. “Some large-scale ceramic sculptures were specially created by two masters of arts and crafts from Guangdong – Huang Zhuonan (黃焯南) and Chen Peijin (陳沛津) – namely the ‘Kiang Wu Hospital’\, the ‘Yilong Firecrackers Factory’ and the ‘Macau National Day Archway’ pieces. SUMMARY:Interactive Installation “What Are We Waiting for” in Albergue SCM
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Graduates and Students and supported by Albergue SCM and Macau Heritage Ambassadors Association\, What Are We Waiting For installation is an exhibition at Albergue SCM from June 18 to June 23\, 2021. Through What Are We Waiting For is an interactive installation which appears to be a washing machine\, participants can experience a “washing procedure” about time with people from Hong Kong and Japan through video clip and online communication software. By looking into the installation\, they have the right to peep\, or the right to look directly\, experiencing the past and the present. \nIn this project\, the washing machines are divorced from such original and ordinary context and value and re-presented with a new purpose. Those who look into the “washing machines” would not be waiting for their washings to be done. Instead\, they would face part of the creators’ current situations of a “new normal” during Covid-19 through music and kaleidoscopic images manipulated by mirrors and video work. It’s the second in a series of Art@Ambiente exhibitions\, organized this time in partnership with the AFA–Art for All–Macau. \nOriginally named Leong Chi Hou\, Leong Chi Mou was born in China in 1991\, he moved to Macau soon after.  In 2015 he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Macau Polytechnic Institute’s School of Arts\, majoring in oil painting. Leong is a member of the Youth Committee of Macau Youth Art Association. He has established his own studio and is now creating beautiful oil paintings and doing some graphic design. He has participated in numerous solo\, group and art exchange exhibitions and has gained a keen following of art collectors In Asia. Leong enjoys experimenting with new materials and makes good use of them in his creations. SUMMARY:Profound – Works by David Sheekwan
DESCRIPTION:Albergue SCM and ALBcreativeLAB and Arts Empowering Lab are presenting the exhibition Profound – Works by David Sheekwan\, till July\, 2021 at the art space At Light. The exhibition is separated into two parts. The first one is held in the gallery At Light\, and the second part takes place in Albergue SCM. It features around 25 oil and ink paintings that David Sheekwan created recently in his home in Zhongshan. \nThe paintings in the exhibition feature Sheekwan’s minimalist and monochromatic style in subdued colors. A series of paintings incorporate twigs\, branches\, and pieces of wood and sand to give them different textures and highlight the different shades of colors and light. By placing these simple materials on a flat background\, the artist turns something ordinary into something extraordinary with this collage of everyday objects. Picasso and Braque invented modern collage by incorporating real objects into their paintings. David Sheekwan had been curious about the cosmos since he was a child and this is a recurrent theme in his artistic creations. The cosmos is so dark and mysterious and he wants to explore it\, to see how humans exist in the gigantic cosmos. His abstract ink and wash paintings show his unique observation of colors\, lines\, and proportions. His painting style is simple but mysterious–his paintings always leave a space to make people think. \nHe is based in the 4\,400 square meters Cuiheng creation base for art and culture. Sheekwan trained in ceramics and paintings on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1955\, then went to Paris where he opened his own design studio. He enjoyed great success in styling and designing fabrics and fashions for various fabric houses\, including New York’s Concord Fabrics. In 1972\, Sheekwan returned to his native Hong Kong to start his own fashion kingdom\, David & David. He designed the costumes of the stage play “A Story of White Serpent” which starred and was directed by Rebecca Pan Dihua. He also designed the costumes for the stage productions of “Warrior Lan Ling” by Willy Tsao and “Testimony” by Helen Lai Hoi Ling. In 1981\, he invested in the movie “Love Massacre” directed by Patrick Tam Kar-Ming and starring Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia. \nIn the 1980s\, he embarked on a new venture to be an artist and entered the Parson’s School of Design\, and attended photography classes at the University of California in Los Angeles. He published his first photography book\, “Photographs by David Sheekwan” in 1999. In 2013\, he held a painting and photography exhibition at the Cuiheng Art Museum\, exhibiting 38 recent oil paintings and photography. DESCRIPTION:“Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself” is an experiment of media expansion undertaken by artist Wang Yan Xin from Lanzhou\, who utilizes performance art as the major medium that is complemented by videography\, installations\, photography\, painting\, and other means. This experiment of cross-media artistic creation initiates the discussions for oneself starting from an artist-in-residence project in Macau and explores the possibilities of artistic creation through a game-based approach. \nIncorporating Macau as space and the artist-in-residence project\, Wang Yan Xin creates this series based on self-observation and awareness of the weakness\, vulnerability\, and pretense of oneself. There are questions over what makes one look tough in appearance\, what makes one feel fear\, and what makes one feel powerless\, leading to critical thinking of oneself. Friedrich Nietzsche says\, “There are no facts\, only interpretations.” Different events only represent different interpretations. As “emotions are more influential than facts”\, lies can be interpreted as “another point of view” or “an opinion” because “everything is relative” and “everyone has their own truth”. DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival (MAF) dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theater\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. The closing performance Taking Leave is a production adapted from American contemporary playwright Nagle Jackson’s namesake play by the National Theatre of China. In this play\, the National First Class Director Wang Xiaoying will lead a cast of veteran actors to interpret the story of an acclaimed actor who used to play the role of King Lear\, who was approaching the end of his life\, wandering between reality and imagination\, allowing the audience to witness the fragility and eternity of life. \nThe Jin Xing Dance Theatre from Shanghai\, one of the top modern dance companies in China\, acclaimed by critics as “an important unit in the history of Chinese dance”\, presents two works\, namely Wild Flower and Trinity. In Wild Flower\, the dancers interpret a wild flower’s tenacious existence through marathon-esque non-stop dancing and movement\, liberating themselves from the bonds of body and mind. The show Trinity\, a performance of works by three renowned choreographers\, namely Jin Xing\, Emanuel Gat and Arthur Kuggeleyn\, explores women’s independent existence and physiological space within each’s distinctive movements\, and illustrates the courage and strength among people through dancers’ bodies\, inspiring artistic appeal and avant-garde ideas. \nThe Coloane game \nHuangmei Opera is a national intangible cultural heritage. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. The play was created in the 1990s with Yu Qiuyu and Chen Xiting as the core creative team\, starring Ma Lan\, among other artists\, who innovated the classics together from a new perspective. The play instantly gained much reputation\, and thus became a reserved play in the theatre. On the MAF stage\, the play will be performed by the new generation of Huangmei opera actors\, passing on tradition and innovation. \nThe Macao Arts Festival establishes a display and exchange platform that has witnessed the professional development of local art groups\, which illustrates Macau’s cultural diversity from different perspectives. The dance theatre Drunken Dragon Dance by Four Dimension Spatial innovates the festive tradition with contemporary dance elements; the documentary theatre See You through Memories by Soda-City Experimental Workshop Arts Association\, explores the past and present landscapes of Patane\, reviewing the transformation of the city; Dance Duo recounts the transformation of the local dancer Kam Hiu Lam in a decade\, presenting her dance dialogue with choreographer Chou Shu-Yi and her joint creation with Wang Yuanqing; The Never-ending Task of Lust for Failure by Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association creates a worldview map beyond languages\, labels and disabilities of the special-needs; Property Guide at Lou Kau Mansion by Jay Lei and Shuk Man Lee and A Short Time Escape by Lei Sam I\, which were premiered at the Macao City Fringe Festival and were recommended by the artistic advisors of the Macao City Fringe Festival\, will be staged at the Macao Arts Festival again. \nMAF also encourages parents and children to enjoy artistic experiences. SUMMARY:Human Observation – Os Wei Multimedia Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Human Observation is a long-term image experiment project by O CHI WAI (Os). This exhibition features his photos from the project. The artist likes walking across different corners in the city\, observing and recording at will the surroundings with a smartphone. Shooting photos in an intuitive way\, he may be a top gun in the group where ‘everyone is a photographer. Educated in visual communication design in Taiwan\, Os abandons conventional photography techniques\, and most of his photographic works were taken with a mobile phone at whim\, on themes such as figures\, nature\, and buildings. The works\, although on subjects unrelated to one another\, convey his inner feelings through visual media. \nHe looks at the world\, at Macau people’s subjective consciousness\, with a focus on daily life and work. Observing others\, he found that man is a strange animal\, always sending messages with dressing\, facial expressions\, behaviors and movements. In Macau\, a city of diversity\, various lifestyles co-exist after centuries of interaction among peoples from different cultures\, creating a close yet strange relationship between individuals\, which is typical of Macau. This exhibition\, combing Os’s records from Human Observation in recent years\, shows more than 100 photos all around the exhibition space – placed in a disorderly way. They constitute image fragments of Os\, dreamy yet realistic. Also on display is a video work converted from images and then set to music which serves as the background sound for the whole exhibition venue. This way\, the artist pieces together audio-visual elements to bring out the theme at a deeper level. \nThe exhibition then introduces the video installation by extending this concept. A mirror confronts visitors once they enter the venue. In such a straightforward way\, each exhibition goer’s activities on the site will be monitored and shown through visual communication behind scenes. This type of invisible surveillance is becoming more and more popular\, on the one hand\, because of man’s need for a sense of security\, on the other hand\, a sense of insecurity – as if binary opposition was rooted in humans\, appearing in different forms in different times. \nThe British TV series Black Mirror explores the relationship between man and technology\, with each episode revolving around technology. The protagonists usually enjoy conveniences brought by the technology but will end up suffering from the negative consequences of using it. In one episode\, most people choose to implant memory chips\, using the eyeballs as lenses to record all the scenes beheld and archive recorded footage for future reading or use as evidence. Such extreme self-monitoring may soon become a reality in humans. DESCRIPTION:The Rui Cunha Foundation presents a balloon art exhibition entitled “Sino-Portuguese Culture Encounters”\, co-organized by the Blessing Balloon Studio of Macau. The artists will display 15 pieces made with balloons\, using special material and detailed techniques.
