SUMMARY:Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum”\, to be held from 12 April to 30 June\, features a total of 52 drawings by 42 Italian Renaissance masters\, such as Mantegna\, Correggio\, Leonardo da Vinci\, Michelangelo\, Titian\, Raphael and Rosso Fiorentino. This exhibition explores the important role of sketches in the work and thinking of the artists during the period between 1470 and 1580. \nPart of the pre-launch events package of Art Macao mega-activity–by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture–this exhibition features six different sections: The Human Figure\, Costume and Drapery\, Movement\, Light\, The Natural World and Storytelling. It explores some of the themes from Renaissance art\, starting from the core study of the human body\, to explore how artists brought life and dynamism to their compositions. The showcase is inaugurated in April\, which coincides with the birth of Leonardo da Vinci (15 April 1452)\, creating significance to the pre-event. SUMMARY:The 30th Macao Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theatre\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. A mix of local\, regional and international performers from various regions and countries around the world presents diverse programmes\, including Cantonese Opera\, Western classical and modern music\, Chinese music and drama\, Macanese drama\, and a host of exciting artistic experiences enjoyed by enthusiastic multicultural audiences for an entire month. The icing on the cake is that several performances are hosted by some of Macau’s enchanting and atmospheric UNESCO-listed World Heritage sites. \nThis year’s Macao Arts Festival\, themed “a tribute to the classics”\, opens with “Vertikal”. Ten dancers supported by ropes appear to change their focus of gravity from the horizontal to the vertical and dash up walls\, while during other moments they perform dance movements to contemporary music when suspended from a height. Another Festival highlight is the dance show “Rain”\, which returns to Macao 18 years after its debut. Additionally during the Festival\, the 120th anniversary of the birth of Chinese novelist\, Lao She\, is marked by performance of “Mr Ma and Son”\, a dramatisation of his novel of the same name. The narrative brings together Beijing-style wit and English humor. \n \nThe Festival also hosts the play “Karl Valentin Kabarett”\, dealing with the work of cabaret performer-turned-author Karl Valentin – sometimes known as the “German Charlie Chaplin”. It features music and dance as well as drama. The Festival’s closing performance\, The Soul of Macao\, celebrates the 10th anniversary of Cantonese opera’s inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, with an original play by a Macao writer. DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion once again presents “Macao Films Panorama”\, the most important local film festival\, showcasing Macau-produced features\, documentaries\, shorts and animations\, from May 17 to 31\, 2019. The Cinematheque aspires to preserve and present local films. After calling local and overseas creatives for the “Comedy Shorts Panorama” shorts competition in April they have selected some of the works to open this year’s “Macao Films Panorama”\, the best of which will be awarded on the same night. \nThe opening gala films features four remarkable works from Macau\, mainland China\, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They were selected by invited film festival curators for the grand open the festival. Local filmmaker Peeko Wong’s G.D.P.: Grandmas’ Dangerous Project follows three elderly ladies’ hilarious mission to ensure their future. Created by Hong Kong director Leung-chuen Yeung\, The Bridge reveals a family’s secrets. Chinese director Er-zhuo Wang traces the present everyday life of an idealistic student from the 1980s in Mother Eden. In Grandma’s Farting Scooter\, Taiwanese filmmaker Chuan Yang Li narrates a delightful adventure of a granny and her granddaughter. \n“Local View Power Revisited” has fourteen films commissioned by the Macao Cultural Centre for the 2017-2018 “Local View Power”. These short features\, animations and documentaries will be on the big screen again in this session\, displaying the narrative power of local talents. “Local Indies Force” is a public calling for local creatives to submit their works produced since 2017\, received a rave response earlier this year. The Cinematheque has received a great number of remarkable works by emerging talents who are furthering their studies abroad and local filmmakers who are exploring their narrative styles. \n“Macao Feature Films” is where Ivo M. Ferreira ignites us with his melancholic Empire Hotel. Set in the old district of Macau\, this feature scrutinizes the life under the neon lights that inform the tourists’ stereotypical imagination of the city. Another feature to impress is made by Singaporean director Thomas Lim. Filmed on an iPhone\, Sea of Mirrors follows a Japanese actress who attempts to regain her fame in a visit to a fan in Macau. The work was shot in Macau and Los Angeles. \nThe “Local Animation Landscape” is a new session. It consists of eight works sure to warm the audience’s heart and soul. In recent years\, many fabulous animation works have fascinated the audience and critics alike. With this additional session\, they hope to encourage filmmakers to explore and experiment in the animation world. \n“Special Screenings” once again work with curators from three film festivals – FIRST International Film Festival in Xining\, IFVA in Hong Kong and Golden Harvest Awards for Outstanding Short Films in Taipei. In addition to film screenings\, the event will include a Pizzica concert\, at the Shouson Theatre\, by one of the best Salento folk music bands\, “Officina Zoè”; powerful ethno-trance-therapeutic music! The eighth annual edition of the Hong Kong Salento International Film Festival\, is part of “Fare Cinema”\, a project wanted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the diplomatic consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes to promote abroad quality Italian film productions. HKSIFF highlights world-class independent films with an Italian and international focus. \n \nSince 2004\, SIFF has been screening the world’s best indie films to large international audiences: a unique opportunity to watch the real independent cinema. Many of the festival’s “Official Selection” films become part of SIFF WORLD\, which takes the films on tour every year through about 14 cities such as Hong Kong\, Yerevan\, Moscow\, St. Petersburg\, Santiago de Chile\, London\, Oslo and many more. The Salento International Film Festival brings to Hong Kong a selection of the Best of the Fest 2018 Edition\, to be screened at the Hong Kong Arts Centre – Louis Koo Cinema\, one of the six best arthouse cinemas in Hong Kong. This movie spot has attracted its fair share of film lovers by showing alternatives to the latest hits. Making great use of its in-house cinema\, viewers can enjoy a robust selection of films like classics\, shorts\, documentaries\, foreign films and indies. \nThis year\, they present six feature films from Italy\, Brazil\, USA\, Iran and China. The 2019 selection includes the new film “Agadah”\, from Italian director Alberto Rondalli\, inspired by the famous Jan Potocki’s Manuscript found in Zaragoza (1805)\, one of the great classics of European literature. An Italian film between fantasy and adventure with a great and sumptuous weaving of images. Ulisse Lendaro\, an Italian film director\, presents his first feature directorial debut “Imperfect Age”. A film which goes straight to the heart of emotions. The imperfect age\, adolescence\, with all its excesses and\, indeed\, its innumerable imperfections. Camilla is a seventeen-year-old girl who has the dream of becoming a dancer\, despite her mother’s concerns. One day\, at a dance lesson\, she meets Sara\, an aspiring dancer like her\, and her life will never be the same again. \n“Domino Effect”\, directed by Fabio Massa\, tells the story of Lorenzo\, a thirty-year-old who finally realizes his dream of going to Africa to teach. Right in the best moment of his experience\, bad news about his health unleash a domino effect on his life and on those of the people close to him. “Cowboy’s Heart”\, by Brazilian director Gui Pereira\, tells the story of Lucca\, a young musician passionate about country music. However\, he manages to be successful only with a more commercial type of music. At the height of his fame\, Lucca argues with his agent during a recording session and decides to return to his home town to connect with his roots and get back in touch with his true inspiration. \n \nThe Iranian film director Morteza-Ali Abbas-Mirzaei presents his first feature directorial debut “Isolation”\, winner of the Best Film award at the 15th annual Salento International Film Festival 2018. The film tells the story of a detainee who takes permission from the warden for a 72-hour leave after six years of imprisonment. He is out in order to bury his wife and to attend her burial ceremony\, but his mind is busy with something else. \nKate Bohan is a Chinese-American writer and director. After writing and directing “Kayla’s World”\, an award-winning short film based on her daughter’s life\, she decided to turn the story into a feature length drama. It took her two years to write a screenplay and finally turn it into her first feature film “Kayla”\, a touching movie that tells a story of life and death\, losing and gaining. Seven-year-old girl Kayla is forced to find balance between Chinese and Western culture. Kayla has a happy family – her mother comes from China\, her father from the United States. After losing her father unexpectedly\, her life changes forever. Her dreams and hopes are mercilessly taken away. She now has to grow up quickly to take care of her sick mother\, and Kayla learns how to deal with poor and gruelling situations while missing her father deeply. But she still inspires the people around her with love and singing and always finds courage\, even when she feels lost. \nExperience Traditional Southern Italian Music by Officina Zoè  \nSince the early 90s\, Officina Zoè has become one of the most well-known Italian musical groups for “pizzica tarantata”\, an ancient rhythm from the Salento Area. Their exciting and touching music is regarded therapeutic and hilarious with a compelling hypnotic expression.  With their dance and obsessive movement\, “Pizzica” was used in the past as a trance vehicle or even as a therapeutic source\, one of the strongest elements in the musical rebirth of the whole of Southern Italy. Thanks to Officina Zoè\, the Pizzica dance has become popular in all the European capitals\, as well as in the United States\, Tokyo\, Rome\, Paris\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Bruxelles\, Cairo\, Split\, Cyprus\, Milan\, Seoul\, Geneva\, Ljubljana\, Prague\, Lisbon\, London\, Lorrach.
