SUMMARY:海洋 La Mer Art Exhibition at City of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the sea and highlighting the urgent need to protect it for future generations\, Melco Resorts & Entertainment will be unveiling the groundbreaking multimedia exhibition 海洋La Mer Art Exhibition July and October\, 2021 at City of Dreams. \nAs the Special Exhibition of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021\, 海洋La Mer Art Exhibition draws together a collection of leading artists and explorers to pay tribute to the beauty\, sensuality\, inspiration and fragility of the sea and its inhabitants through a series of innovative installations. \nFeaturing specially commissioned works by pioneering video artist Ange Leccia\, renowned composer Thomas Roussel\, botanical sculptor Makoto Azuma\, and visionary artistic director Franco Dragone\, the exhibition takes place at one of Macau’s most iconic venues\, the Dancing Water Theater at City of Dreams. Each of the pieces in the exhibition has been created to complement the others\, creating a harmonious experience for visitors. This global collaboration of renowned talents also highlights what can be achieved through purposeful cooperation by people from different parts of the world\, something that is necessary if humans are to protect the oceans effectively. \nLa Mer by Ange Leccia is a video work in which the artist records the endless movement of the waves as they emerge and then crash onto the beach. Through Leccia’s unusual perspective\, viewers are invited to contemplate the rhythm\, colors and relentlessly shifting shapes of the sea\, demonstrating why it has been a source of inspiration for artists since the beginning of time. \nAnge Leccia’s La Mer \nW/AV/E by Thomas Roussel sees the acclaimed French composer using music and artificial intelligence to immerse the audience in a constantly changing audiovisual seascape. To make this cutting-edge work\, Roussel wrote and recorded the score with an orchestra in Paris. The musical segments are activated and transformed by real-time oceanographic data collected in the Pacific Ocean to create an ever-evolving symphony. A collective of artists crafted the visual illustrations from digital recordings of around 35\,000 marine species. \nSephirothic Flower by Makoto Azuma chronicles the avant-garde Japanese flower artist’s journey to the depths of the ocean. Having previously sent flowers into the Arctic and into space\, this installation follows the artist as he joins an underwater research team to take a bouquet of flowers 1\,000 meters down to the bottom of Japan’s Suruga Bay. In Oceans by Franco Dragone\, the legendary artistic director uses the staging and machinery of the Dancing Water Theater to create a dramatic spectacle that combines baroque performance with modern technology. Addressing the issue of marine pollution\, this poignant work draws attention to the destruction of the ocean environment and shows how its beauty hides a manmade monstrosity. \nThe House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries \nIn addition to the exhibition\, City of Dreams is also hosting a series of activities and events that give visitors the opportunity to deepen their appreciation of the sea and make a meaningful contribution towards protecting it. Taking place every Saturday night at 7:30pm\, the La Mer Film Festival turns the spotlight on a selection of the greatest movies inspired by the sea\, from arthouse films and documentaries to big-budget blockbusters\, such as The Big Blue\, Finding Nemo\, and Life of Pi. The screenings will incorporate some of the Dancing Water Theater’s signature aquatic effects\, creating an unprecedented one-of-a-kind viewing experience for the audience. \nThe House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries\, meanwhile\, gives guests the opportunity to see Macau’s most famous artistic extravaganza from the perspective of the show’s divers\, revealing the secret design of the underwater stage and the skills required to control its submerged mechanisms. Visitors can also connect with the oceans spiritually at the Flow Body Mindfulness classes. Led by the Head of Performer Wellness from The House of Dancing Water and featuring music composed by Thomas Roussel that is inspired by the sounds of the sea\, this guided session allows participants to clear their minds\, stay positive and progress towards a state of wellness. \nFlow Body Mindfulness classes \nIn “Sea x Art” Forum\, freediver Wang Aolin\, the first person from China to descend to a subaquatic depth of 100m\, and underwater photographer Uncle J\, share their unique experiences below the waves\, and how they relate to the fields of art and sustainability. \nMelco has committed to reaching zero emissions and zero waste by 2030. Part of this program is the company’s fight against single-use plastics. Guests in search of a distinctive reminder of the exhibition can head to the Dancing Water Boutique\, where Parley for the Oceans bags will be on sale. Created in collaboration with artists Ed Ruscha\, Pipilotti Rist\, Katharina Grosse\, Doug Aitken\, Tobias Rehberger\, and Bharti Kher\, each bag is made from approximately five intercepted plastic bottles and funds the removal of more marine plastic waste by the Parley Global Cleanup Network. Online donations to Parley for the Oceans\, a global charity organizing ocean clean-ups around the world\, are also encouraged. \nWhen: July 16–October 31\, 2021 \n“Sea x Art” Forum – 4:00pm–5:00pm\, Sunday\, August 8\, 2021 \nFlow Body Mindfulness classes – Saturdays\, 4:00pm–5:00pm \nWhere: City of Dreams\, Estrada do Istmo\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \n*Online registration is preferred for the “La Mer” Film Festival\, The House of Dancing Water Underwater Discoveries\, Flow Body Mindfulness classes and “Sea x Art” Forum\, limited seats will also be available on-site on a first-come-first-serve basis \nFor more information\, call +853 8868 6767 or check the event’s official page

SUMMARY:5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Film still from “Radiograph of a Family” \nThe 5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF) takes place from July 9 to 25 and features a series of fantastic films to watch alone\, with your date\, family members and even friends. With screens at both Casa Garden and Cinema Alegria\, it discusses several themes across different generations\, focusing on vintage\, classics\, and new releases. But could we simply connect with and understand the real world through videography? We have been forced to have a lot of “me time” by the pandemic. How could we stay at home on our own and reconcile with ourselves? Each film selected in this edition of the MOIDF\, perhaps\, tries to answer these questions. \nThis festival features films such as The Tree Remembers\, The Witches of the Orient\, Taivalu + A Study of Fly\, Minamata Mandala (Part I) and many more. \nThe pandemic fluctuations continue to persist in different countries\, alongside the wars and turmoils in various regions in the past two years\, the world seems to “get dark by the time”*. For cinema\, when it gets dark it means a new start — the start of a film. When the darkness is over\, the lights are back. From the world of cinema to the real world\, you might realize the world has changed a bit. Perhaps\, it is due to the fact that while directors present the cruel reality in the films they also offer covertly a glimpse of hope. Like a quote from The Metamorphosis of Birds\, one of the films in this edition of MOIDF\, “Every day the earth’s orbit changes\, as if it were telling us that we must change too.” We hope that the 5th MODIF\, after being suspended for a year\, could accompany everyone through films\, and envision the pandemic world from a new perspective.  \nWhen: July 9–25\, 2021 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Casa Garden\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 (normal ticket)\, MOP $30 (discount ticket) per person \nFor more information\, check their official website or send them an email to info@moidf.com. SUMMARY:31st Macao Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival (MAF) dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theater\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. A mix of local\, regional and international performers from various regions and countries around the world present a diversity of programs. This year’s MAF will focus on productions from Mainland China and Macau\, presenting nearly 100 events including outreach activities in various districts\, establishing a display and exchange platform\, expanding the artistic vision and enhancing the aesthetic perception of its audience. \nThe grand opening White Snake by Lin Zhaohua Theatre Studio from Beijing\, redesigns the characters of the classic folktale The Legend of the White Snake in an artistic and creative way\, combing theatre\, music\, dance and multimedia art. The closing performance Taking Leave is a production adapted from American contemporary playwright Nagle Jackson’s namesake play by the National Theatre of China. In this play\, the National First Class Director Wang Xiaoying will lead a cast of veteran actors to interpret the story of an acclaimed actor who used to play the role of King Lear\, who was approaching the end of his life\, wandering between reality and imagination\, allowing the audience to witness the fragility and eternity of life. \nThe Jin Xing Dance Theatre from Shanghai\, one of the top modern dance companies in China\, acclaimed by critics as “an important unit in the history of Chinese dance”\, presents two works\, namely Wild Flower and Trinity. In Wild Flower\, the dancers interpret a wild flower’s tenacious existence through marathon-esque non-stop dancing and movement\, liberating themselves from the bonds of body and mind. The show Trinity\, a performance of works by three renowned choreographers\, namely Jin Xing\, Emanuel Gat and Arthur Kuggeleyn\, explores women’s independent existence and physiological space within each’s distinctive movements\, and illustrates the courage and strength among people through dancers’ bodies\, inspiring artistic appeal and avant-garde ideas. \nThe Coloane game \nHuangmei Opera is a national intangible cultural heritage. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. The play was created in the 1990s with Yu Qiuyu and Chen Xiting as the core creative team\, starring Ma Lan\, among other artists\, who innovated the classics together from a new perspective. The play instantly gained much reputation\, and thus became a reserved play in the theatre. On the MAF stage\, the play will be performed by the new generation of Huangmei opera actors\, passing on tradition and innovation. \nThe Macao Arts Festival establishes a display and exchange platform that has witnessed the professional development of local art groups\, which illustrates Macau’s cultural diversity from different perspectives. The dance theatre Drunken Dragon Dance by Four Dimension Spatial innovates the festive tradition with contemporary dance elements; the documentary theatre See You through Memories by Soda-City Experimental Workshop Arts Association\, explores the past and present landscapes of Patane\, reviewing the transformation of the city; Dance Duo recounts the transformation of the local dancer Kam Hiu Lam in a decade\, presenting her dance dialogue with choreographer Chou Shu-Yi and her joint creation with Wang Yuanqing; The Never-ending Task of Lust for Failure by Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association creates a worldview map beyond languages\, labels and disabilities of the special-needs; Property Guide at Lou Kau Mansion by Jay Lei and Shuk Man Lee and A Short Time Escape by Lei Sam I\, which were premiered at the Macao City Fringe Festival and were recommended by the artistic advisors of the Macao City Fringe Festival\, will be staged at the Macao Arts Festival again. \nMAF also encourages parents and children to enjoy artistic experiences. On the Other Side of Macao – A magical adventure by Bernardo Amorim\, a plastic arts and multimedia artist based in Macao\, brings the magic of narrative to life with the use of puppets and video mapping; The Coloane Game by Dream Theater Association offers guided tours visiting streets and alleys of Coloane\, experiencing the residents’ spirit of mutual help and the prosperity and decline of the shipbuilding industry; the artistic and cultural performances Performing Arts Gala at the Iao Hon Market Park for three consecutive nights\, inject vitality in the community through the arts. The Children’s Story World and art exploration activities will also be available this year\, and all are welcome to enjoy the world of art. \nDrunken dragon dance \nInjecting artistic vitality into traditional culture\, students from the Cantonese Opera Course at the School of Theatre of the Macao Conservatory step on the stage to present the Cantonese Opera Jiufeng Mountain; the Patuá theatre comments on all crucial issues of the city\, including current affairs\, humanism\, and dialect. This year\, the Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group presents a hilarious production Boss for a Day\, keeping the full house of the audience in stitches. The Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra present the classics of Mozart and a musical feast that combine traditional Chinese culture and modern aesthetics concepts\, respectively\, carrying out a musical dialogue between the East and the West. \nRen Dongsheng\, a National First Class Stage Designer\, is dedicated to exploring stage design. He produced a collection of poetic\, vibrant\, and epochal works by repeatedly reviewing style\, color\, and techniques. The “Imagery and Space: Ren Dongsheng Scenography Exhibition” leads the audience to transcend spatial dimensions and experience the charm of scenography. Baptiste Rabichon\, an emerging contemporary French photographic artist\, will present “A Room with a View: Baptiste Rabichon Photography Exhibition”\, whose works with a technique that combines traditional and innovative elements\, introducing the contemporary expressions of photography and exploring the possibilities of artistic creation. \nWhen: April 30–May 29\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau\, Old Court Building\, 459 Av. da Praia Grande\, Macau\, Macau Contemporary Art Center\, Rua de S. SUMMARY:5th German Film Festival – KINO Macao 2020
DESCRIPTION:CUT Co. Ltd. partners with Goethe-Institut Hong Kong for the fifth time to present the popular German Film Festival – KINO Macau. Since the introduction to Macau by CUT in 2016\, the German Film Festival has gained popularity over the years and attracted a large turnout. \nKINO Macao\, on the other hand\, could continue to take place in physical form based on the situation of the city\, featuring a total of 12 outstanding German films\, six of which are the newest works covering a variety of topics. From an urban tale with stunning visuals to a refreshing German musical to a purposeful and powerful children’s film\, the films this year also pay attention to social and historical issues. \nThe program of KINO Macao 2020 continues to comprise the Director-in-Focus session\, which presents three major films of Margarethe von Trotta in different eras\, one of the significant directors and the only female auteur during the New German Cinema. There is also Wim Wenders 75 – Special Screening session this year\, presenting the documentary Desperado for the 75th birthday of the director and Wenders’ Faraway\, So Close!\, which won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Talks and post-screening sharing sessions are also highlights of KINO Macao 2020. \nOpening Film: Asia Premiere of Biography Work About Rainer Werner Fassbinder \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 highlights the works of three film masters in the New German Cinema\, including Margarethe von Trotta\, Wim Wenders\, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The opening film of the festival is Enfant Terrible directed by Oskar Roehler\, which focuses on the career of Fassbinder\, from his debut feature film Lover Is Colder Than Death in 1969 to the powerful\, vulgar-style Querelle in 1982 to his death at the age of 37. This movie legend once said\, “I don’t throw bombs\, I make films.” \nIn a life span of 37 years and a film career spanning over 13 years\, the number of Fassbinder’s works totaled 44\, including three short films\, a television series of five episodes\, and the 14-part Berlin Alexanderplatz. Whether the audiences watched his works at the Director-in-Focus session in KINO Macao 2018\, they could still know more about this inspiring film talent from another perspective this time. What is also thrilling is the screening of Enfant Terrible in Macao marks the Asia premiere of the film after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. \n \n“Rise Up! Women!” Director-in-Focus Session: Margarethe von Trotta \nInfluenced by the French New Wave\, the New German Cinema\, during the period between the 1960s and 1980s\, saw the emergence of numerous acclaimed directors. The most exceptional female director from this batch is Margarethe von Trotta\, who has started independent productions since the 1970s. Aged 78 now\, she has written and directed over 10 films\, including Marianne and Juliane (1981)\, Rosa Luxemburg (1986)\, Rosenstrasse (2003)\, and Hannah Arendt (2012)\, which are all highlights of the German cinema and showcase her distinctive auteur style. \nThe images of each female character in her works do not only break conventional gender stereotypes but are also exquisitely crafted to showcase the female aesthetics in the spiritual\, intellectual\, and independent aspects. The main visual design of KINO Macao 2020 is inspired by her masterpiece Rosa Luxemburg\, depicting the title character as a rose in pursuit of free will and freedom albeit hardship. Coincidentally\, many movies in KINO Macao 2020 are based on a female perspective\, from kids to the elderly\, from the past to the present\, each illustrating visionary and powerful women–perseverant\, intellectual\, and unique. \nWide Array of Outreach Activities to Enhance Depth and Scope \nApart from Cinema Alegria\, KINO Macao 2020 also takes place at Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, which boasts a serene environment for the screening of four major films — including System Crasher\, Rosa Luxemburg\, Marianne and Juliane\, and Faraway\, So Close! — followed by post-screening sharing sessions hosted by Macao film critic Quinton Tang\, Hong Kong film critic Joyce Yang\, and film scholar Dr. Derek Lam. Besides\, there are also four talks on different topics this year: Philosophy Workshop: “Do We All Have the Banality of Evil? — Hannah Arendt’s Philosophy”\, “Theatre and Rainer Werner Fassbinder”\, “Literature — Peter Handke and Wim Wenders”\, and “Judith Kerr’s World of Picture Books”. These talks allow the local audiences to engage with the film festival through artistic perspectives. \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 is the first film festival presented by CUT after the end of its operation of Cinematheque‧Passion. We are grateful for the continuous support from Goethe-Institut Hong Kong so that KINO Macao could be held once again. It is a challenging task to organize a film festival in the absence of venues\, funding\, and sponsorships\, but it’s fortunate that there is a group of vigorous and diligent film enthusiasts\, who work side by side to strive for the best results and to overcome any challenges. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There might be ups and downs along the path\, but as long as the audiences appreciate our efforts\, it is believed that our world will see the blooms of flowers one day. \nWhen: November 6–16\, 2020 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, 27 Calçada da Vitória\, Macau \nHow much: TBA \nFor more information\, send an email to info.cutcompany@gmail.com or check the organizer’s Facebook page
