Now\, “mime” just means performances that do not require scripts or even language. The Macau International Mime Festival 2019\, organized by CANU Theatre\, invited groups from all over the world to present spectacular performances at the Black Box Theatre in the Old Court Building and at the Mount Fortress Park. SUMMARY:4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque．Passion teams up with Comuna de Han-Ian to present the 4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival\,  from August 10 to 31. The highly anticipated festival opens with documentary gem Let’s Get Lost (newly restored version)\, revealing the turbulent life and spellbinding music of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. The Director-in-Focus session surely impresses with a gripping portfolio of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, who will visit Macau and share his artistic methods and anecdotes. Aiming to create a dialogue with the city\, the festival puts together new releases on this 20th anniversary of Macau’s handover under two themes–The Collective and Memories. The releases will also be Hong Kong and Macau premieres. Accompanying the exciting programme are talks and events. \n“Prince of Cool” Chet Baker lives in the fond memory of jazz fans worldwide. His beautiful face and deep voice add a heart-breaking quality. On creating this documentary\, Bruce Weber comments\, “Everybody has a story about Chet Baker…I made this film about Chet because I had my own story about him.” A post-screening session with music expert Anson Ng brings us an hour of jazz and talk about this legend. \nDirector-in-Focus: Sergey Dvortsevoy’s session features six remarkable works of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, charting his creative about-face from observational documentaries–Paradise\, Bread Day\, Highway and In The Dark–to the impressive features\, Tulpan (2008) and Ayka (2018). He tends to apply long takes and minimal narration and action in an honest and humorous way. Dvortsevoy will also bring his creative vision in a masterclass for Macau filmmakers and audience. \n \nThe Collective and Memories manifest in a programme of Hong Kong-and-Macau premieres. The Collective investigates how the self is constructed in a world where the Internet reigns. Los Reyes looks at a community from the perspective of two street dogs. Buddy touches upon the emotional therapy animals can offer humans. Honeyland follows the life of one of the last female beekeepers in Europe for three years. Director Hassan Fazili and his family are on the run after the Taliban put out a call for his death. He records his flight with three mobile phones and makes Midnight Traveler. \nSearching Eva shows how Eva publishes her thoughts online with her new identity–a sexual worker\, model\, feminist and writer. Edited out of several hundred hours of vloggers’ self-broadcast footage\, Present.Perfect. reveals the power of the Internet over individuals. Treasure Island follows a group of people who attempt to escape from reality in a resort island. Memories tells touching tales of individuals. A few weeks ago\, music fans worldwide bid farewell to the father of Bossa Nova\, João Gilberto. Where Are You\, João Gilberto? tries to fulfil the dream of seeing the musician by following his life and music. \nThree Identical Strangers unveils dark scientific secrets by reuniting triplet brothers who were separated at birth. Minding the Gap sympathetically follows three young skateboarders’ experiences as they enter adulthood. Italian model-turned-feminist Benedetta Barzini refuses to be gazed at and her son tries to picture her different selves in The Disappearance of My Mother. Another Day of Life is a collaboration between Spanish director Raúl de la Fuente and Polish animator Damian Nenow\, transporting the audience back to ambitious Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński’s first-hand updates on the Angolan Civil War. Photographer Khalik Allah depicts the rural and urban landscape and people of his mother’s country in\, Jamaica in Black Mother. In The Best Thing You Can Do With Your Life\, Zita Erffa records the life of her brother\, who she has not seen for eight years\, in the controversial Legionary of Christ. \nJonas Mekas\, the Godfather of American avant-garde cinema\, passed away earlier this year. With his Bolex 16mm camera\, Mekas illustrates his journey in New York as an outsider and his return to Lithuania\, to meet his friends in Europe again in Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania. Award-winning The Act of Killing surrealistically scrutinizes the Indonesian mass killing of communists in 1965 Indonesia by recording the perpetrators re-enacting the incident. The director’s cut version will be shown in two screenings. Indonesian history expert George Young will give a pre-screening talk on the historical background of this piece. \nWhen: August 10–31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2585 or check their website

SUMMARY:BOK Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:From 1999 to 2019\, Macau has undergone earth-shaking transformations. As a non-governmental art experimentation platform\, at a time when the long-awaited LRT (Light Rail Transit) service is about to start\, we hope to explore the gap between the “platform” and the “moon” through seeking theater perspectives and imaginations in contemporary art. The gap is between the rational and the romantic\, the ideal and the reality\, society and the self. BOK festival 2019 aims to bring theatre closer to people by showcasing a series of performances\, including Falling from the Land\, Time and Toys\, Streaming Steam\, Orig.ami\, Artificial Loneliness\, Between the Winds\, among others. \nThe city is under development and people are moving\, heading every day to an impossible destination. If we get lost on the way\, that is more than reasonable. There will be a series of explorations about identity. The ‘BOK Movement’ features seven groups of creative types from different fields who have left their native land to ‘roam’ in different cities.  With a string of experimental theatres\, they will take you on a flight between the platform and the moon\, in an attempt to search for definition/re-definition. \nLaunched in 2013\, the BOK Festival is a performing arts platform co-launched by several non-governmental associations. Taking the polysemic character “搏” (Cantonese pronunciation: bok3) as its tenet\, the Bok Festival emphasizes: linking\, striving\, experimenting\, connecting\, trying. It’s co-produced by Own Theatre\, Macau Experimental Theatre\, MyLand Culture \nWhen: August 24–September 8\, 2019 \nWhere: Black Box Theatre\, HiuKok Experimental Lab and Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.2 \nHow much: MOP $100–140 \nFor more information and ticketing\, check here

SUMMARY:33rd Macao International Music Festival: The Magic Flute
DESCRIPTION:This edition of the Macao International Music Festival kicks of with the grand Opera in two Acts\, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart The grand opening features The Magic Flute\, which appears to give rise to more questions and mysteries rather than provide answers. At the end\, the immense fantasy of this magical opera defies all logic and reason. Its secret lies in deeper layers of fundamental human experiences for which the fairytale appears simply to be the most adequate form of expression and only music finds the appropriate language. It is with good reason that the “eponymous hero” of the opera is an instrument\, or quite simply: music. The show takes approximately two hours and 45 minutes\, including one interval and it’s performed in German\, with subtitles in Chinese\, Portuguese and English. \nWhen: Friday–Sunday\, October 4\, 5 (8:00pm) and 6 (3:00pm)\, 2019 \nWhere: Grand Auditorium\, Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $400–$700 \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:Enjoy Music in Cinema: Screening of Musical Movies Community Activities
DESCRIPTION:This time\, the 33rd edition of the Macao International Music Festival also brings cinema to the city! There are four different movies screening at Cinematheque Passion. The Magic Flute (Sweden\, 1975) is adapted from Mozart’s famous opera The Magic Flute\, this film tells the story of a young flute player who can tame beasts and a prince setting out on a journey to rescue a kidnapped princess\, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. On their way\, they face all kinds of people and events that test their moral values and conscience. Though filmed in a real theater\, Ingmar Bergman’s cinematic version of Mozart’s work still uses a lot of close-ups and camera movements\, switching between on and off stage. Respecting the original while injecting new forms\, the film has become the adaptation par excellence of The Magic Flute. Joyce Yang is a guest speaker at the end of the screening. \nIn You\, the Living (Du Levande)\, Roy Andersson explores this question by depicting mundane\, everyday moments in a nondescript Swedish city. The film\, which is made up of 57 tableaux\, is a relatively slow-paced\, loosely connected\, quietly funny narrative with no main characters or plot development to speak of. While very little happens plot-wise\, You\, the Living manages to capture human life in its boring and bland\, but also bitter and subtly beautiful dimensions. Chan Ka Keong (Macau film director\, designer and artist) talks at the end. \nSpike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues follows a period in the life of fictional jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam as a series of bad decisions result in his jeopardising both his relationships and his playing career. The film also features the music of the Branford Marsalis Quartet and Terence Blanchard on trumpet\, who also plays for the character Bleek Gilliam. Guest speaker Anson Ng manages “Pin-to Livros & Musica”\, and columnist of the “Listen to sound all around” column of the Macao Daily News. He is also the manager of Node Culture from Taiwan\, which has the proxy rights for around 40 music brands from all over the world. The company also plans and organizes musical performances in four regions across two straits. Anson used to be team leader and senior purchasing agent in the music section of the Taiwan Eslite bookstore. \n \nBlue Note Records: Beyond the Notes is a revelatory\, thrilling and emotional journey behind- the -scenes of Blue Note Records\, the pioneering label that gave voice to some of the finest jazz artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Through rare archival footage\, current recording sessions and conversations with jazz icons Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter and today’s ground-breaking Blue Note musicians like Norah Jones\, Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes explores the unique vision behind the iconic jazz record label. As one of the most important record labels in the history of jazz\, Blue Note Records founded in New York in 1939 by German Jewish refugees Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff\, the history of Blue Note Records goes beyond the landmark recordings\, encompassing the pursuit of musical freedom\, the conflict between art and commerce and the idea of music as a transformative and revolutionary force. \nWhen: The Magic Flute – 7:30pm\, Friday\, October 4\, 2019 \nYou\, the Living – 2:30pm\, Saturday\, October 5\, 2019 \nBlue Note Records: Beyond the Notes – 9:30pm\, Friday\, October 11\, 2019 \nMo’ Better Blues – 2:30pm\, Saturday\, October 12\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

SUMMARY:33rd Macao International Music Festival: Folk Songs\, by Trio Mediaeval
DESCRIPTION:Trio Mediaeval\, composed of three brilliant singers from Norway\, quickly made a name for itself in the world of vocal music after its establishment. It presents two concerts at this year’s music festival. In Folk Songs\, the Trio performs a selection of Norwegian and Swedish love songs\, wedding tunes\, lullabies\, sun-prayers\, ballads\, religious hymns\, and instrumental tunes\, with its extraordinary vocal expertise. \nNorwegian and Swedish vocal folk music is distinctive with its tradition of singing without words\, a style known as tulling\, sulling or tralling in which a sequence of consonants is invented or improvised by the singer. In dance music\, which is characterized by rhythmic\, often rapid instrumental-sounding passages and uneven beats\, singers create their own sounds using plosives and nasal consonants with relatively light vowels. Trio Mediaeval will rearrange the old songs and ballads from its homeland and investigate its Scandinavian roots with a powerful and compelling account of Norwegian folk songs. The show takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes\, including one interval. \nProgram highlights include traditional folk songs from Norway\, Lova Line\, Swedish medieval ballad\, St. Örjan och draken\, but also Norwegian wedding tune Bruremarsj fra Gudbrandsdalen\, among others. Anna Maria Friman\, Linn Andrea Fuglseth\, and Jorunn Lovise Husan are the voices behind this beautiful trio. \nWhen: 8:00pm\, Sunday\, October 6\, 2019 \nWhere: Dom Pedro V Theatre\, Largo de Santo Agostinho\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $200–250 \nFor more information\, check the event’s official website

The session\, which offers a broad view of his creative paths spanning twenty years\, features Baal (1969)\, Young Törless (1965) and The Legend of Rita (2000). SUMMARY:Shi Fu Miz Festival - Autumn 2019
DESCRIPTION:Shi Fu Miz Festival returns to Hong Kong this October for its fifth iteration. On October 26 and 27\, 2019\, the beloved boutique festival will once again settle its sound system on Cheung Chau\, a small island just 30 minutes from the mainland by ferry. There\, near the island’s idyllic golden sand beaches\, three stages will unfold in the grasses of Sai Yuen Farm. The musical programme once again centers around house and techno and will be sidelined by plenty of dusk till dawn activities like yoga\, workshops\, tattoos\, street art and martial arts. \nSince its inception in 2016\, the festival has rapidly grown and now welcomes an intimate audience of 2\,000. After seeing first hand the demand for intelligent electronic music\, a lack of platforms to showcase these kinds of artists\, and a desire to grow the regional music scene\, since 2019 Shi Mu Fiz has evolved into a biannual event. It has now become synonymous with eclectic and forward-thinking artists who push the boundaries of electronic music in a mystical setting that evokes feelings of inclusivity and freedom. Most importantly\, this year\, the festival will further its commitment to sustainability by holding eco-talks and beach cleanups\, as well as setting new goals towards its journey to becoming zero-waste. Unifying a tribe of people responsible for and sensitive to environmental issues\, Shi Fu Miz looks to become a sustainable exemplary by being a low waste event that forbids the use of plastics bottles on site. Festivalgoers are instead encouraged to bring their own reusable bottle and take advantage of the free water dispensers scattered across the site. \nOther initiatives will be introduced this year include replacing the plastic bags usually found in rubbish bins with biodegradable bags. Stages and decoration will also be built up of recycled and upcycled materials. Finally\, the festival is encouraging its guests to seek out more information surrounding sustainability by participating in eco-talks\, eco-workshops\, and more. Shi Fu Miz Festival is a music and art project created by the Hong Kong-based creative agency: FuFu and the music collective La Mamie’s from France. Their mantra is to offer a varied program of worldwide electronic music combining live music\, DJ sets and original cultural activities around art in a humanized festival\, where the spirit of the well-being is the keyword. \nSaturday’s line-up includes Camion Bazar\, CARISTA\, Club Kowloon\, Josey Rebelle\, KiNK (live)\, La Mamie’s\, LB aka LABAT\, Lena Willikens\, Max Davis\, Mengzy\, Peach b2b Shanti Celeste\, Or:la\, Stephen Andarakis\, Utopia Hong Kong and Yukari BB.
