DESCRIPTION:The Feast of Kuan Tai is a religious custom to commemorate Guan Yu who was also known as “Guan Gong.” Guan Yu\, whose style name is Yunchang\, was a general of Shu during the Three Kingdoms period and the sworn brother of Liu Bei. After his death\, Guan Yu was entitled as the “Saint of War” as a symbol of “Loyalty.” \nOver the history\, he had had many titles such as “Kuan Tai” and “Saintly Emperor Guan.” Kuan Tai is a popular worship idol in Macau; almost every shop places a Kuan Tai statue for worship. Many Kuan Tai temples are built\, such as the Kuan Tai Temple at Sam Kai Vui Kun\, the Kuan Tai Temple near Cheoc Ka Village in Taipa and more. Besides\, there are two days to celebrate Kuan Tai’s birthday: the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month and the twenty-fourth day of the sixth lunar month. \nOn these two days\, believers offer fresh flowers\, burn joss sticks and various offerings to worship Kuan Tai at home. The sports association in Macao\, social communities and shops\, in particular\, organize various activities to celebrate Kuan Tai’s birthday. With this special series of activities\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau seeks to celebrate the anniversary with the public and encourage residents to experience the beauty of Macau’s World Heritage in their daily lives and to appreciate the city’s precious cultural treasures\, thereby conveying the concept of “appreciating our world heritage together”. \nThematic Festival\nOn the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the inscription of the Historic Centre of Macao on the World Heritage List\, a thematic festival will be held at the “World Heritage Youth Education Base”\, located in the Mandarin’s House\, on July 11 and 12. The festival features a rich variety of special activities\, such as game booths\, family workshops\, thematic exhibitions\, sale of cultural and creative products\, a lucky draw\, as well as various enthralling performances and special photography spots\, celebrating the 15th anniversary with the public. During the activity period\, free buses are available from Iao Hon Municipal Market and Taipa Central Park to the Mandarin’s House and those interested may also take public transport to the site of the venue. \n \nUnique Experience on World Heritage Open Day\nOn “World Heritage Open Day”\, five activities of public visits are held at several world heritage sites that are rarely open to the public. Activities include tea time at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library\, panoramic view of the Ruins of St. Paul’s\, treasure hunting in the Mandarin’s House\, secret magic circle of the Senado library\, and ascent to Guia Lighthouse. This allows the public to appreciate the Historic Centre of Macao from different perspectives and to enjoy a unique experience at the world heritage sites\, such as enjoying a Portuguese-style tea set at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library\, overlooking the Ruins of St. Paul’s from the roof terrace of the Colégio (college) Mateus Ricci\, joining a treasure hunt game on the second and third floors of the Mandarin’s House–which are rarely open to the public–visiting the inner hall and upper floor gallery of the Senado Library\, and climbing to the top of Guia Lighthouse to enjoy an impressive view of Macau. \nHeritage City Tours to Capture the Beauty of the Historic Centre\nThe Heritage City Tours – Guided Tours and Illustration Workshop features five elaborate itineraries. The city tours are led by professional guides\, who will take participants to explore different world heritage buildings and tell the story of each building along the way. The activity also features illustrators teaching the technique of creating a travel diary\, so that participants can capture the wonderful moments of their tours and record everything in their unique travel diaries. DESCRIPTION:June is known as the Month of Portugal\, which means lots of activities and cultural happenings to celebrate this date. June 10 is the Day of Portugal and the Portuguese Communities\, bringing several events across different continents and places around the world to celebrate this country’s culture and language. \nThis year in Macau\, there are cinema cycles\, a concert\, art exhibitions and much more to attend. The festivities start on June 4\, with an exhibition of works by a Portuguese architect residing in Macau\, Adalberto Tenreiro. Called “Days of Portugal”\, it’s a graphic narrative of drawings the author made while traveling across the country\, from north to south. It’s open to the public until July 10\, 2020. June 5 and 6 are reserved for a cinema cycle: Macau’s own edition of Indie Lisbon. There’s the chance to see a bit of everything: from documentaries to short movies\, features and animations\, there are Portuguese films\, but also foreign ones. Past Perfect (by Jorge Jácome)\, Raposa (by Leonor Noivo)\, and many others. On June 6\, head with the little ones to Casa Garden for “O Arraial”\, a puppets show. June 10 kicks off\, as always\, with the Portuguese flag flying\, followed by an exhibition by Portuguese artist\, Madalena Fonseca\, at Tap Seac’s Glass House. \nThe Tribute to Portuguese Music concert\, with Casa de Portugal’s own band on the stage\, takes place on the night of June 12\, so gather your friends and family to check out some lusophone tunes! The following weekend of June 13 and 14 are\, once again\, dedicated to cinema: NY Portuguese Short Film Festival and CPLP (Portuguese Speaking Countries) is an initiative by the Arte Institute and happens for the fifth time in Macau this year. Focused on Portuguese cinema made by Portuguese filmmakers all over the world\, it first took place in the USA\, 2011. The audience will be able to see more than 20 short films\, at Casa Garden. \nJune 18 is the day photographer and artist António Mil-Homens presents his painting exhibition\, Monochrome. June 24 and 26 are the celebrations’ last days and are dedicated to literature. On Wednesday\, Tap Seac’s Glass House hosts the release of the book “Rio das Pérolas” (Pearl River)\, which is comprised of poems and verses about Macau written by 24 writers. In the “Every Object Hides a Story: Object Theatre Workshop”\, through observing daily life objects\, participants will learn to probe into the history of the objects\, identify the differences between them\, and eventually discover the potentials. The “Hello Grown-ups! Hello Kids! Storytelling with Magic Box Workshop” is open for families to participate and get close with the arts. DESCRIPTION:The Macau Jazz Week takes place from December 11 to 15 and it’s a free admission festival for all to appreciate music in its natural state. The opening concert: Ensemble Transience (International) features Macau musicians. Founded by Hong Kong guitarist and composer Teriver Cheung\, the contemporary jazz chamber group\, Ensemble Transience\, merges jazz\, classical and various styles with unlimited forms of instrumentation. Since 2015\, this group has been touring international and receives enthusiastic feedback. For this very Macau Jazz Week\, with conductor Ang Shao Wen and organist Kerong Chok from Singapore with drummer Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan from Thailand\, Cheung will be playing works by himself and Chok\, featuring Macau musicians: trumpeter Nelson Leung\, oboist Tina Che\, saxophonist Alex Cheng and Worktones String Quartet\, and lifting the curtain of the Jazz Week entitled “The Sound of Pan Asia”. There is also a talk by Ang as conductor and Chok as composer\, searching for the path of contemporary jazz in Asia. \nChok Kerong is an internationally renowned organist\, pianist\, and composer. He has released two albums\, “Good Company” and “Tales They Told Me”\, both of which feature his expansive songwriting and command of the organ. His current organ trio is considered to be one of the finest ensembles to emerge from Singapore\, and the group’s music reflects the members’ dedication to swing\, the blues and an aesthetic that favors authenticity above all. Expect uncompromising music that engages both heart and mind\, presented with a startling depth of expression. The Kerong Chok Trio (Singapore) Concert happens on December 13. \n \nThe Vincent Ong Trio (Malaysia) ft. Jens Bunge (Germany) concert\, takes place on December 14. Bassist Vincent Ong has been active in Malaysia and Asia region on both performing stage and recording studio\, with profound experience and excellent performance skills\, he’s back to the Jazz Week as a leader\, featuring the legendary German harmonica player Jens Bunge: endorsed by Toots Thielemans and played with Art Farmer and Barbara Denneriein\, etc. Bunge has issued either personal albums and is the exclusive sampling musician of various brands of music modules. Ong and Bunge give a unique performance of both original and classics with pianist Kom Wongsawrt (Thailand) and drummer Charles Wong. (Malaysia). \nChromatic harmonica is the instrument that Jen Bunge performs\, with exquisite tone and unique skills. Bunge is invited to give a masterclass to introduce the harmonica and its application on jazz\, on December 15. The closing event of this year’s jazz week is a  jam session. This has become a compulsory Jazz Week event. \nLocal musicians perform with guests\, and Macau guitarist Chan Hon Chong and Hong Kong guitarist Terry Yau participate. Join them at the beautiful Orient Foundation and have a laid-back Sunday with music of no boundaries! DESCRIPTION:Themed as “Explore the Light” this year\, Macau Tourism Mascot “Mak Mak” will join locals and visiting spectators to explore four glittery routes and Macau’s evolving cityscape over the last two decades through different angles in the art of light. The adventure will reminisce the stories and memories belonging to the people of Macau\, and evoke the joy brought by celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR. There are several routes to follow: Route 1: Light of Age (north district)\, Route 2: Light of Memory (central district and St. Lazarus parish)\, Route 3: Light of Colours (Nam Van and Sai Van district)\, Route 4: Light of Harmony (Nossa Senhora do Carmo Parish). \n“Light of Age” in the northern district connects different places including Leisure Area in Rua do General Ivens Ferraz\, Leisure Area at Baía Norte do Patane on Rua Norte do Patane and Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome. Along the route\, various spots are festooned to sparkle like a star-studded sky. Spectators can get lost in the beauty of “Eight Planets” at Leisure Area in Rua do General Ivens Ferraz\, hop onto a future spaceship for an experience of “Space Travel”\, or enjoy a walk down memory lane through different decades in Macau with the mapping show “Memory of Macau Canidrome” at Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome. \n“Light of Memory” in the central district and St. Lazarus’ Parish connects Leisure Area at Largo da Sé\, Ruins of St. Paul’s\, Rua dos Ervanários\, Largo do Pagode do Bazar and Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro. Spectators can experience the fun of “Swinging Cascade” and “AR Magic Sandbox” at Largo do Pagode do Bazar. “Homey Lamp” at Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro\, projects different home lightings commonly used in different ages\, which will mirror the changes in people’s life in Macau. \n“Light of Colors” in Nam Van and Sai Van Districts covers Anim’Arte Nam Van\, Nam Van Lake Nautical Centre\, the White awning at Nam Van as well as St. Joseph’s Seminary Church. The route features a cascade projection titled “Floating Wonder”\, a mega light installation “Glistening Lotus” and more\, besides an encounter with “Big Mak”\, a huge 12-meter-tall balloon “Mak Mak” at Anim’Arte Nam Van. Audiences can enjoy “Flow of Melody”\, a piano performance paired with light installation\, or shop for local signature delicacies and cultural and creative products in “Anim’Arte Market”. \n“Light of Harmony” at Our Lady of Carmel Parish will cover the Taipa Houses\, Largo dos Bombeiros and the square in front of Pak Tai Temple. “Tide of Love” projects light effects resembling ocean tides at Taipa Houses\, creating harmonious scenery imbued with romantic aroma. A mapping show named “Carnival” is staged at Largo dos Bombeiros to showcase the cultural gems and culinary delights from Portugal\, bringing to life the creative dynamic of Macau as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. \nThe Macao Light Festival 2019 is organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office\, co-organized by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau\, the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Sports Bureau. DESCRIPTION:While temperatures are dropping\, things are heating up this November in Cinematheque Passion as we present Future Roads – Cross-Strait cum Hong Kong and Macao College Student Film Festival 2019 from 23 to 29 November. Ten screenings bring us twenty-four remarkable college students’ works from mainland China\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, and Macau\, followed by post-screening in-depth discussions with the directors. \nA spectrum of themes unfolds across works that track the historical and communal background of their cities\, and whose humanity is often moving and compelling. These works tell tales of family\, death\, youth\, old age and more. In addition to in-house screenings\, Cinematheque Passion reaches into the community by bringing some selected works of these new directors to local libraries and schools. \nThe festival opening session will feature eight films\, one from each university. Each screening will be followed by a talk\, allowing the audience to meet the student directors as they share their creative concepts and paths. The eight opening films are award-winning Brighter Days\, following a Kazakh family living in a small country town in the Altay\, northern Xinjiang; Old Man and A Dog\, Best Screenplay winner of 13th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival\, Hong Kong; The Secret Child\, nominated for China New Talents at the 35th Interfilm Berlin International Short Film Festival; You Are My Daughter\, the story of a woman unable to break away from her past; Behind the Wall\, a look into a family’s problems through a young girl’s relationship with her uncle; Cici\, a mother and daughter tale set against a spring in Changsa; Wilt\, the story of a father-and-daughter relationship; and The Lonely 52\, about two girls brought together by their deep loneliness.
