The Cinematheque aspires to preserve and present local films. After calling local and overseas creatives for the “Comedy Shorts Panorama” shorts competition in April they have selected some of the works to open this year’s “Macao Films Panorama”\, the best of which will be awarded on the same night. \nThe opening gala films features four remarkable works from Macau\, mainland China\, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They were selected by invited film festival curators for the grand open the festival. Local filmmaker Peeko Wong’s G.D.P.: Grandmas’ Dangerous Project follows three elderly ladies’ hilarious mission to ensure their future. Created by Hong Kong director Leung-chuen Yeung\, The Bridge reveals a family’s secrets. The Cinematheque has received a great number of remarkable works by emerging talents who are furthering their studies abroad and local filmmakers who are exploring their narrative styles. \n“Macao Feature Films” is where Ivo M. Ferreira ignites us with his melancholic Empire Hotel. Set in the old district of Macau\, this feature scrutinizes the life under the neon lights that inform the tourists’ stereotypical imagination of the city. Another feature to impress is made by Singaporean director Thomas Lim. Filmed on an iPhone\, Sea of Mirrors follows a Japanese actress who attempts to regain her fame in a visit to a fan in Macau. The work was shot in Macau and Los Angeles. \nThe “Local Animation Landscape” is a new session. It consists of eight works sure to warm the audience’s heart and soul. In addition to film screenings\, the event will include a Pizzica concert\, at the Shouson Theatre\, by one of the best Salento folk music bands\, “Officina Zoè”; powerful ethno-trance-therapeutic music! The eighth annual edition of the Hong Kong Salento International Film Festival\, is part of “Fare Cinema”\, a project wanted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the diplomatic consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes to promote abroad quality Italian film productions. HKSIFF highlights world-class independent films with an Italian and international focus. \n \nSince 2004\, SIFF has been screening the world’s best indie films to large international audiences: a unique opportunity to watch the real independent cinema. Many of the festival’s “Official Selection” films become part of SIFF WORLD\, which takes the films on tour every year through about 14 cities such as Hong Kong\, Yerevan\, Moscow\, St. Petersburg\, Santiago de Chile\, London\, Oslo and many more. The Salento International Film Festival brings to Hong Kong a selection of the Best of the Fest 2018 Edition\, to be screened at the Hong Kong Arts Centre – Louis Koo Cinema\, one of the six best arthouse cinemas in Hong Kong. This movie spot has attracted its fair share of film lovers by showing alternatives to the latest hits. Making great use of its in-house cinema\, viewers can enjoy a robust selection of films like classics\, shorts\, documentaries\, foreign films and indies. \nThis year\, they present six feature films from Italy\, Brazil\, USA\, Iran and China. The 2019 selection includes the new film “Agadah”\, from Italian director Alberto Rondalli\, inspired by the famous Jan Potocki’s Manuscript found in Zaragoza (1805)\, one of the great classics of European literature. An Italian film between fantasy and adventure with a great and sumptuous weaving of images. Ulisse Lendaro\, an Italian film director\, presents his first feature directorial debut “Imperfect Age”. A film which goes straight to the heart of emotions. The imperfect age\, adolescence\, with all its excesses and\, indeed\, its innumerable imperfections. Camilla is a seventeen-year-old girl who has the dream of becoming a dancer\, despite her mother’s concerns. One day\, at a dance lesson\, she meets Sara\, an aspiring dancer like her\, and her life will never be the same again. \n“Domino Effect”\, directed by Fabio Massa\, tells the story of Lorenzo\, a thirty-year-old who finally realizes his dream of going to Africa to teach. Right in the best moment of his experience\, bad news about his health unleash a domino effect on his life and on those of the people close to him. “Cowboy’s Heart”\, by Brazilian director Gui Pereira\, tells the story of Lucca\, a young musician passionate about country music. However\, he manages to be successful only with a more commercial type of music. At the height of his fame\, Lucca argues with his agent during a recording session and decides to return to his home town to connect with his roots and get back in touch with his true inspiration. \n \nThe Iranian film director Morteza-Ali Abbas-Mirzaei presents his first feature directorial debut “Isolation”\, winner of the Best Film award at the 15th annual Salento International Film Festival 2018. The film tells the story of a detainee who takes permission from the warden for a 72-hour leave after six years of imprisonment. He is out in order to bury his wife and to attend her burial ceremony\, but his mind is busy with something else. \nKate Bohan is a Chinese-American writer and director. After writing and directing “Kayla’s World”\, an award-winning short film based on her daughter’s life\, she decided to turn the story into a feature length drama. It took her two years to write a screenplay and finally turn it into her first feature film “Kayla”\, a touching movie that tells a story of life and death\, losing and gaining. Seven-year-old girl Kayla is forced to find balance between Chinese and Western culture. Kayla has a happy family – her mother comes from China\, her father from the United States. After losing her father unexpectedly\, her life changes forever. Her dreams and hopes are mercilessly taken away. She now has to grow up quickly to take care of her sick mother\, and Kayla learns how to deal with poor and gruelling situations while missing her father deeply. But she still inspires the people around her with love and singing and always finds courage\, even when she feels lost. \nExperience Traditional Southern Italian Music by Officina Zoè  \nSince the early 90s\, Officina Zoè has become one of the most well-known Italian musical groups for “pizzica tarantata”\, an ancient rhythm from the Salento Area. Their exciting and touching music is regarded therapeutic and hilarious with a compelling hypnotic expression.  With their dance and obsessive movement\, “Pizzica” was used in the past as a trance vehicle or even as a therapeutic source\, one of the strongest elements in the musical rebirth of the whole of Southern Italy. Thanks to Officina Zoè\, the Pizzica dance has become popular in all the European capitals\, as well as in the United States\, Tokyo\, Rome\, Paris\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Bruxelles\, Cairo\, Split\, Cyprus\, Milan\, Seoul\, Geneva\, Ljubljana\, Prague\, Lisbon\, London\, Lorrach. SUMMARY:Hua Yuan at MGM
DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Journey to the Dark II\, by Yang Yongliang) \nInk flows with the history and art of Chinese culture. MGM presents a modern artistic ink experience–Hua Yuan. This exhibition invites renowned multi-disciplinary contemporary artist Jennifer Wen Ma and international digital visual artist Yang Yongliang. Jennifer Ma uses the intrinsic connectivity and diversity of ink to present a large-scale multimedia and art installation of three gardens. “A Metamorphosis: No End to End” is a garden landscape bringing together natural\, sculptural and virtual textures and an installation opera in one act “Paradise Interrupted” which was praised globally as the opening event of the 2016 Lincoln Center Festival in New York. \n“Journey to the Dark II”\, by Yang Yongliang\, combines slow movement\, profound sound and darkness in a video installation that unfolds a side of Macau we’ve never seen: although it doesn’t exist\, it’s made of several portions of the city’s landscape. When looking carefully\, one can spot Grand Lisboa\, MGM Macau and so many other iconic structures that make Macau the city it is. This is a simple\, but intense experience to have\, especially in a place when horizons are rare and buildings are set side by side with some more. \nThe work presents a surrealistic urban nightscape merged with a boundless night sky; here the artificial world and the natural world coexist\, interwoven\, in a motley harmony. Through cutting edge digital imaging technologies\, this work is rendered at near-8K resolution. Incorporating a large amount of footage purposely shot in Macau and photographs of the signature architecture of the city\, the video has the distinct flavor of Macanese culture and topography\, raising provocative questions about the issue of regionality in the exhibition. Journey to the Dark II is a digital video that uses urban architecture as a brush and the layered mountains of Song-dynasty landscape painting as a compositional blueprint. It can thus be considered a contemporary extension of traditional Chinese painting. \nFrom afar\, the work appears tranquil and quiet\, with only a vague suggestion of movement. As the viewer approaches\, everything in the video reveals itself to be moving\, growing\, and transforming. Urban development not only nourishes a city but also raises some objective questions. Whereas the ancients expressed their appreciation for nature in landscape painting\, Yang Yongliang’s contemporary landscape provokes reflection on the state of contemporary society. The monumental high-\nresolution panoramic screen in the MGM Theater perfectly renders the near-infinite details in Journey to the Dark II\, enveloping the viewer like a dome and engendering an unprecedented immersive visual experience. \nThe darkness of MGM Theatre allows for an introspective moment in this exhibition lasting a few minutes: just the perfect amount of time for the audience to create their own stories in and about the city: one with no boundaries in this showcase. It harnesses technology and videography to showcase the transformation of Chinese ink via a digital landscape painting. Through Hua Yuan\, the essence of Chinese culture and art is preserved and progressed\, allowing the public to experience the beauty of ink and wonder at its possibilities. Born in 1980\, Shanghai (China)\, Yang graduated from the China Academy of Art in Shanghai in 2003\, and his works have been exhibited at museums and biennials all over the world. His is renowned for exploiting connections between traditional art and the contemporary\, implementing ancient oriental aesthetics and literati beliefs with modern language and digital techniques. \nInternationally renowned\, cross-disciplinary artist Jennifer Wen Ma employs an all-encompassing worldview to conceptualize a multimedia installation taking over MGM COTAI’s Spectacle. Springing forth from Ma’s mind and hands\, this garden landscape brings together natural\, sculptural\, and virtual textures\, synchronizing the entire Spectacle in one visionary stroke. \nThe artist’s signature honeycomb-construction paper-sculpture garden will be the physical artwork in the Spectacle. This stunning series of paper gardens combines state-of-the-art laser cutting technology with traditional Chinese art of accordion paper folding technique. Gardens spill down to the floor and occupy a pop-up exhibition space in the Spectacle. The installation is designed as a three-dimensional landscape painting. Viewers looking down from the first level will discover a world activated by visitors exploring the gardenscape on the ground floor\, and vice versa. The multiplicity of perspectives allow each visitor to have a unique\, immersive experience with the work. \nAn internationally renowned\, cross-disciplinary artist\, Ma bridges varied media such as installation\, drawing\, video\, public art\, design\, performance\, and theater; often bringing together unlikely elements in a single piece in order to create sensitive\, poetic and poignant works. \n\n“Paradise Interrupted An Installation Opera in One Act”\, by Jennifer Wen Ma \n\n\nFrom the same artist\, Paradise Interrupted: An Installation Opera in One Act\, tells the story of a woman searching for an unattainable ideal in a world that comes to life through her singing\, as she attempts to return to the Garden. Co-produced by Spoleto Festival USA\, Lincoln Center Festival\, Singapore International Festival of Arts and National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts\, it weaves the myths of the Garden of Eden and Peony Pavilion\, with a mesmerizing composition that merges a 600-year-old Kun opera with contemporary Western opera. The creative use of interactive technology enables a host of digital characters to interact with the heroine within a magical garden to create an enchanting story. \nThe director and designer of this exquisite opera is visual artist\, Jennifer Wen Ma. The composition\, which is both a celebration of tradition and an entirely new masterpiece\, is by Huang Ruo. The quest-seeking heroine is Qian Yi\, who has been lauded by The New York Times as “China’s reigning opera princess.” \n\nWhen: “Journey to the Dark II” – June 7–August 3\, 2019 (Closed every Tuesday and from June 12 to 14) \n“A Metamorphosis: No End to End” – June 7–October 20\, 2019 \n“Paradise Interrupted: An Installation Opera in One Act” – 7:00pm\, August 29 and 8:00pm\, August 31\, 2019 \nWhere: MGM Cotai\, Avenida da Nave Desportiva\, Cotai \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s website \n\n“Hua Yuan” at MGM is part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao. \nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike. \n\nA Metamorphosis: No End to End\, by Jennifer Wen Ma

SUMMARY:Black Is Beautiful: A Celebration of African-American Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion presents “Black Is Beautiful: A Celebration of African American Cinema”\, featuring ten classics and recent works from African American filmmakers from June 7 to 20. An opening party with a DJ and rapper kicks off the festival\, followed by the introductory talk “’That’s My Joint!’ ─ Why Black Arts Matter”. \nThe festival features Spike Lee’s classic Do the Right Thing back from the 1980s\, and Cannes’s Grand Prix winner Blackkklansman. The former depicts the tension between whites and blacks during a Brooklyn heatwave; while the latter retells the real-life story of black police officer Ron Stallworth in scorching humour. \n“L. A. Rebellion”\, is a term used to describe the school of UCLA emerging filmmakers from the 1970s as they developed their voice and offered a humanistic approach to the intrinsic worth of the individual. Charles Burnett’s hidden gem Killer of Sheep comments on a worker’s hard life in the ghettos with the texture of documentary. Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust follows the Gullah community\, descendants of West African slaves\, in their journey to protect their culture and heritage. \nTwo pieces envision a future that is not confined by reality. Terence Nance’s An Oversimplification of Her Beauty combines documentary and animation in a tale of being stood up on a date. Boots Riley’s Sundance winner Sorry to Bother You shows a call-centre worker climb his career ladder by applying a “white” voice. \nStrange Bedfellows session puts the stereotypical portrayal of black people back on the agenda with Wendell Harris Jr’s Chameleon Street and Kathleen Collins’s Losing Ground. The former revisits the real-life story of master impersonator Douglas Street with sharp wit; while the latter is a masterpiece looking intimately at marriage\, art and gender. \nDown by Law features Barry Jenkins’s If Beale Street Could Talk and Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station. These are set to fascinate with engaging stories. Based on James Baldwin’s novel\, the former tells a tale of two lovers in the face of injustice. The latter compassionately unfolds the last hours of a young black man who is shot dead by a police officer. Talk: “’That’s My Joint!’ ─ Why Black Arts Matter” Festival curator Francisco Lo and University of Hong Kong lecturer Dr. Derek Lam discuss the history and style of African American cinema with Macau audience. \nWhen: June 7–20\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per ticket \nTickets are available from 10:00am on May 25\, 2019\, both online and at Cinematheque Passion’s ticket office \nFor enquiries\, call them at +853 2852 2585 or check their website

SUMMARY:Art Macao: Exhibitions Organized by Foreign Consulates
DESCRIPTION:(Featured image: Menshen: Everyday a kilo of gold\, by Benoit+Bo\, 2019) \nThe Consulates of Italy\, Belgium\, Japan\, Hungary and Portugal in Hong Kong (and Macau) joins forces to present a set of amazing\, new\, contemporary art pieces for all to enjoy for free. Exhibited around the city\, some in Taipa and others\, in the Macau peninsula. This collection includes works by Benoit+Bo\, Hungarian Zsuzsa Péreli\, Japanese Taniguchi Hiroki\, Shinmura Norito and Ren Takaya\, among others. \n“Prosperous Years”\, from the Brussels-based artist duo Benoit+Bo (東波西波 in Chinese) begins with a visual and sound installation of a giant lantern. The lantern is in the shape of heads\, named “Happy Heads” by the two artists. The enlightened head tells a poetic and sentimental text in several languages (English\, Chinese\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese and more). This installation symbolizes the universality of art and human feelings in a globalized world. Near the lantern\, there is a neon sculpture represents universal symbols of love. In the other room\, there are a series of printed digital works which is called “Menshen” in reference to the images of “gatekeepers” from the Chinese culture. The two artists reinterpret the old idea of protective images with new technologies. The recombination of style in photography\, the narration of unlike language in audio and mixed application of various cultural factors in digital precisely reflect the borderless vision of the two artists. For more details on this showcase\, check here. \nBo\, from China and Benoit\, from France\, hope to create a contemporary art landscape that integrates the cultures of the east and the west by their different cultural world views and artistic languages. They boldly use different elements of folk art and pop culture to link it with inspirations from life\, and express a contemporary vision without boundaries through distinctive colours and different materials. The two artists met in Tianjin in 2002 and used to work in Paris in Shanghai. They have been living and doing art creations in Brussels\, Belgium since 2015. Their work has been exhibited in galleries and art museum in China\, France\, Belgium\, Italy\, Spain\, Australia and South Korea. \nGRAPHIC TRIAL 2010 uroko no utsukushisa ni chousensuru\, by Shinmura Norito\, 2010 \nThe Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong brings\, in collaboration with Toppan Printing\, a poster exhibition featuring posters of Japanese culture and performing arts. Toppan Printing has produced posters portraying expressions of graphic design and print expressions designed by prominent Japanese contemporary artists. In addition\, some specially curated posters from the “Graphic Trial” and the “Traditional Performing Arts of Japan” series (※)\, as well as a couple of selected arts and crafts items by Japanese modern and contemporary artists will be displayed at the same time. The exhibition will also feature digital works by the media artist Naoko Tosa as well as various art activities such as lectures and demonstrations on craft arts\, flower arrangements\, tea ceremony\, music performances and so on to be held at designated times. \n(※) “Graphic Trial” is an experimental attempt that deeply examines the relationship between graphic design and printed expression\, seeking out new expressions through experiments in which creators actively challenge printing expressions. “Traditional Performing Arts of Japan” is a series of posters designed in 1981 and 2017 to commemorate the launch of performing arts collaboration between UCLA and Waseda Universities. It’s displayed at Tap Seac Gallery until September 22\, 2019. \nA New Wave of Passion\, by Francesco Lietti\, 2018 \nColours of Asia compiles works by the Italian artist\, Francesco Lietti. He has been living in Hong Kong since early 2006 and his love of this vibrant\, eclectic city is immediately apparent in his works\, which derives from the mnemonic imagery of the artist\, who lives in symbiosis with the themes of travel and discovery. \nWhen first visiting Hong Kong in the summer of 2005\, the painter experienced an overwhelming sensation: fascinated by the variety of colours\, the rich smells\, and the plethora of images he was drawn to return and stay. This exciting metropolis is something you cannot just put into a frame: something would spill out; something would be missing; one can catch the details\, but he or she would never be able to capture the entire picture. The artist portrays this through simple and direct forms. He paints naive visions that often have a humorous quality\, describing the city in an almost caricatured magnificence. Through the use of striking colors the painter captures the essence of Hong Kong’s famous harbour skyline and makes it his own. His paintings hover between reality and fantasy. Using strong blocks of paint to represent the buildings\, Lietti also includes smaller patches of textured colour\, which dance across the cityscape\, giving it that dream-like\, ephemeral quality. The artist works in acrylic and oils on canvas and also adds collage to give his paintings texture and depth. He then finishes his pieces with a thick\, glossy resin\, further enhancing the brightness of the colours. \nLietti also captures the colors and delights of other Asian destinations. The lush greens of Vietnam and Bali\, the golden sunsets of Rajasthan\, the deep blue seascapes of the Philippines\, these are just some of the many places he has visited and experienced. The artist gives us rare glimpses\, merging reality with a magical world. The exhibition is showcased at the Taipa Houses-Exhibitions Gallery. \nFinally\, the tapestries of Hungarian artist\, Zsuzsa Péreli are displayed at the Macao Contemporary Art Center – Navy Yard No. 1 with Looking out of the Credible exhibition. Péreli uses colourful threads\, rather than a brush. Expanding the genre of the tapestry\, she experiments with new materials\, techniques and procedures as she probes into the layers of time and memory. She includes “found objects” in her compositions\, demonstrating both a respect for tradition and a desire to break the mould. She also creates aquarelles and collages. The metaphysical and sacred themes that run through her oeuvre mediate between two worlds\, intimating and translating for the viewer all that can only be intuited about non-material reality. The exhibition is organized by the Consulate General of Hungary in Hong Kong and Macao. \nWhen: June–September\, 2019 \nWhere: Prosperous Years – Old Court Building\, 459 Av. da Praia Grande\, Macau \nColours of Asia – Taipa Houses-Museum\, Avenida da Praia\, Carmo area\, Taipa \nLooking out of the Credible: Tapestries of Zsuzsa Péreli – Navy Yard 1\, Macao Contemporary Art Center – Navy Yard No 1\, Rua S. Tiago da Barra\, Macau \nJapanese Culture and Performing Arts Poster Exhibit – Tap Seac Gallery\, Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Praca Do Tap Seac\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the joint event’s website \n\nExhibitions Organized by Foreign Consulates are part of the mega international art and cultural event Art Macao. \nHappening from May to October this year\, Art Macao brings together cultural institutions\, hotel and resort operators\, consular missions in Hong Kong and Macau to create an unforgettable atmosphere and cultural vitality to thrill residents and tourists alike.

SUMMARY:2nd China & Portuguese-speaking Countries Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Macau plays a key role in connecting and developing the cultures of China and Portuguese-speaking countries. Last year\, the China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Film Festival was enthusiastically introduced\, becoming a part of the arts-development project “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”. The festival aims to broaden local audience’s vision of Chinese and Portuguese films. \nThis year\, the festival returns with an engaging programme to draw the interest of the Macau audience to Portuguese films\, and of the Portuguese community to Chinese films. In addition\, a session of local filmmakers’ works is presented. This year’s festival consists of more than 20 films screened in three sessions – “Classics’ Review”\, “New Vision of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” and “Olá Macao”\, complemented by post-screening talks and sharing sessions. \nPoet-and-director Fei Mu’s glorious classic Spring in a Small Town sees its Macau premiere in a digitally remastered version provided by the China Film Archive. This year\, we are honored to invite Dai Jinhua\, professor at Peking University\, to open the film festival with a talk on Chinese cinema and its focus on rural landscape and urban perspectives. The closing film is The Portuguese Woman by Rita Azevedo Gomes. Adapted by Austrian writer Robert Musil’s novel\, this poetic period drama follows a Portuguese woman’s married life in another country while her husband is at war. \nIn regard to Chinese film\, guest curator Joyce Yang explores the rural imagery and urban depiction in the Chinese cinema\, touching upon different themes and styles. The “Classics’ Review” session features Jia Zhangke’s internationally- renowned feature Still Life and director-in-focus Zhang Yang’s early gripping storytelling. As for the contemporary works\, they illustrate beguiling and intimate stories. One of them is Zhou Jie’s recent work Blue Amber. Its award- winning cinematography is led by Macao director Mike Ao Ieong Weng Fong\, who has won the “Asian New Talent Award – Best Cinematographer” at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2018. \n \nClarence Tsui\, guest curator and aficionado of Portuguese works\, carefully selects six outstanding films shot and produced in Portugal\, Brazil\, Angola and Guinea-Bissau\, creating a cinematic feast for the audience. Moving beyond last year’s broad\, panoramic study of cross-continental Lusophone cinema\, the festival goes more specific this year by exploring how identities are manifested in films from this very diverse sphere. The Portuguese films will be screened in the “New Vision of China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries” and “Classics’ Review” sessions\, three works for each session. \nLast but not least\, the “Olá Macao” session presents four remarkable features from the “Support Programme for the Production of Feature Films”\, and five enchanting animation works from the first edition of the “Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films”. Both programmes are introduced by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government. Through this session\, we not only connect different cultures but also invite local audiences and audiences all over the world to witness the creative growth of local works and the unique film stories produced in Macau. \nWhen: July 4–17\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: Each ticket costs MOP $60 \nFor more information\, check their website

SUMMARY:Macau International Mime Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:Many people may still associate “mime” to silent performers with white painted faces\, wearing black and white striped costumes telling stories with body movements. In fact\, artists around the world have been putting new elements into “mime”\, with the aid of rich visual-audio effects turning them into dynamic physical performances. Now\, “mime” just means performances that do not require scripts or even language. The Macau International Mime Festival 2019\, organized by CANU Theatre\, invited groups from all over the world to present spectacular performances at the Black Box Theatre in the Old Court Building and at the Mount Fortress Park. The audience will enjoy diverse performances featuring clowns\, marionettes\, magic\, pantomime and lighting\, among others. Regardless of gender or age\, anyone can participate in these performances with joy in a relaxed environment. \nIn addition to the mime performances\, master classes and movie screenings will be held\, allowing the audience to enter the world of the great masters. Internationally renowned clown master Philippe Gaulier from France is coming to Macau again to hold a five-day master class\, exploring the artistic world of the “Neutral Mask” and of the Italian commedia dell’arte with participants. Furthermore\, there are also workshops for adults and children. Professional artists from various countries will share their tips on how to integrate magic in mime performances\, and the secret on how to use body movement and rhythm to create different characters! Besides\, there will be a mime movie screening at the Cinematheque．Passion too. If you are feeling a little low\, come to the Black Box Theatre\, be thoroughly entertained and turn that frown upside down! \nThere is a Shakkalo Physical Theater workshop\, which includes basic techniques of modern mime and simple body expression in physical theater. You will learn the secrets of mime illusion and character building. With the help of your imagination\, Shakkalo will guide you to “dive into water”\, “touch the sand” or “walk in the clouds”. Through various exercises you will learn how with your body and your ideas\, you can create anything out of nothing! During Edi’s French Pantomime workshop\, you will learn the basics of pantomime. You will learn how to manipulate the invisible. How to mime a wall\, climb an invisible ladder\, push a heavy objects and juggle with an imaginary objects! SUMMARY:4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque．Passion teams up with Comuna de Han-Ian to present the 4th Macao International Documentary Film Festival\,  from August 10 to 31. The highly anticipated festival opens with documentary gem Let’s Get Lost (newly restored version)\, revealing the turbulent life and spellbinding music of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. The Director-in-Focus session surely impresses with a gripping portfolio of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, who will visit Macau and share his artistic methods and anecdotes. Aiming to create a dialogue with the city\, the festival puts together new releases on this 20th anniversary of Macau’s handover under two themes–The Collective and Memories. The releases will also be Hong Kong and Macau premieres. Accompanying the exciting programme are talks and events. \n“Prince of Cool” Chet Baker lives in the fond memory of jazz fans worldwide. His beautiful face and deep voice add a heart-breaking quality. On creating this documentary\, Bruce Weber comments\, “Everybody has a story about Chet Baker…I made this film about Chet because I had my own story about him.” A post-screening session with music expert Anson Ng brings us an hour of jazz and talk about this legend. \nDirector-in-Focus: Sergey Dvortsevoy’s session features six remarkable works of Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy\, charting his creative about-face from observational documentaries–Paradise\, Bread Day\, Highway and In The Dark–to the impressive features\, Tulpan (2008) and Ayka (2018). He tends to apply long takes and minimal narration and action in an honest and humorous way. Dvortsevoy will also bring his creative vision in a masterclass for Macau filmmakers and audience. \n \nThe Collective and Memories manifest in a programme of Hong Kong-and-Macau premieres. The Collective investigates how the self is constructed in a world where the Internet reigns. Los Reyes looks at a community from the perspective of two street dogs. Buddy touches upon the emotional therapy animals can offer humans. Honeyland follows the life of one of the last female beekeepers in Europe for three years. Director Hassan Fazili and his family are on the run after the Taliban put out a call for his death. He records his flight with three mobile phones and makes Midnight Traveler. \nSearching Eva shows how Eva publishes her thoughts online with her new identity–a sexual worker\, model\, feminist and writer. Edited out of several hundred hours of vloggers’ self-broadcast footage\, Present.Perfect. reveals the power of the Internet over individuals. Treasure Island follows a group of people who attempt to escape from reality in a resort island. Memories tells touching tales of individuals. A few weeks ago\, music fans worldwide bid farewell to the father of Bossa Nova\, João Gilberto. Where Are You\, João Gilberto? tries to fulfil the dream of seeing the musician by following his life and music. \nThree Identical Strangers unveils dark scientific secrets by reuniting triplet brothers who were separated at birth. Minding the Gap sympathetically follows three young skateboarders’ experiences as they enter adulthood. Italian model-turned-feminist Benedetta Barzini refuses to be gazed at and her son tries to picture her different selves in The Disappearance of My Mother. Another Day of Life is a collaboration between Spanish director Raúl de la Fuente and Polish animator Damian Nenow\, transporting the audience back to ambitious Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński’s first-hand updates on the Angolan Civil War. Photographer Khalik Allah depicts the rural and urban landscape and people of his mother’s country in\, Jamaica in Black Mother. In The Best Thing You Can Do With Your Life\, Zita Erffa records the life of her brother\, who she has not seen for eight years\, in the controversial Legionary of Christ. \nJonas Mekas\, the Godfather of American avant-garde cinema\, passed away earlier this year. With his Bolex 16mm camera\, Mekas illustrates his journey in New York as an outsider and his return to Lithuania\, to meet his friends in Europe again in Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania. Award-winning The Act of Killing surrealistically scrutinizes the Indonesian mass killing of communists in 1965 Indonesia by recording the perpetrators re-enacting the incident. The director’s cut version will be shown in two screenings. Indonesian history expert George Young will give a pre-screening talk on the historical background of this piece. \nWhen: August 10–31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2585 or check their website

SUMMARY:BOK Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:From 1999 to 2019\, Macau has undergone earth-shaking transformations. As a non-governmental art experimentation platform\, at a time when the long-awaited LRT (Light Rail Transit) service is about to start\, we hope to explore the gap between the “platform” and the “moon” through seeking theater perspectives and imaginations in contemporary art. The gap is between the rational and the romantic\, the ideal and the reality\, society and the self. BOK festival 2019 aims to bring theatre closer to people by showcasing a series of performances\, including Falling from the Land\, Time and Toys\, Streaming Steam\, Orig.ami\, Artificial Loneliness\, Between the Winds\, among others. \nThe city is under development and people are moving\, heading every day to an impossible destination. If we get lost on the way\, that is more than reasonable. There will be a series of explorations about identity. The ‘BOK Movement’ features seven groups of creative types from different fields who have left their native land to ‘roam’ in different cities.  With a string of experimental theatres\, they will take you on a flight between the platform and the moon\, in an attempt to search for definition/re-definition. \nLaunched in 2013\, the BOK Festival is a performing arts platform co-launched by several non-governmental associations. Taking the polysemic character “搏” (Cantonese pronunciation: bok3) as its tenet\, the Bok Festival emphasizes: linking\, striving\, experimenting\, connecting\, trying. It’s co-produced by Own Theatre\, Macau Experimental Theatre\, MyLand Culture \nWhen: August 24–September 8\, 2019 \nWhere: Black Box Theatre\, HiuKok Experimental Lab and Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.2 \nHow much: MOP $100–140 \nFor more information and ticketing\, check here
