SUMMARY:Screening of "Legendary Tea" by Catarina Cortesão & Tomé Quadros
DESCRIPTION:“Legendary Tea” documentary is an amazing journey about Macanese identity\, and their families\, since the first moment they settled in Macau. The Fat Tea ceremony–seen as one of the key elements of Macau’s intangible cultural heritage–is the story drive chosen by Catarina Cortesao to portray the roots of its tradition and its memory regarding cultural and social identity boundaries. This journey reveals the ingredients\, soups\, salted and sweet dishes\, and secret recipes\, depicting a unique cultural landscape more than 450 years in the making that has been dramatically shifted in Macau. The Fat Tea shows clear evidence of Macanese identity. \nThe angle chosen by Catarina Cortesão and Tomé Quadros (videographer) to tell this story tried to be as much as possible close to the concept that Fat Tea stands as a metonym for creole ethnic identity. Thus\, the narrator in Legendary Tea is one of the main characters\, personifying the Macanese generation back in the city after a period of living abroad. The narrator addresses the history and the roots of the tradition of Fat Tea\, confronting the origin of typical dishes\, the recipe secrets\, its protagonists\, and chefs with art and artistry that elaborate this very representative and secular table. The traditional local cuisine is seen as a factor of aggregation and amalgamation of different cultures and different expressions. \nTherefore Legendary Tea aims to document and ensure the transmission of that intangible heritage\, in particular the gastronomy in Macau\, both traditional and contemporary kinds\, revealing specialties like Fat Tea. As well\, to get knowledge of its ingredients\, the street markets\, and the major chefs and characters. That project will ignite the audience’s curiosity concerning Macau’s identity\, and its legacy and heritage. Approaching that theme will allow the different communities to know more about the territory culture through Macanese cuisine\, around a table\, and in this way to contribute to better communication and social harmony in Macau. \nFat Tea documentary project proposal aims to give knowledge abroad\, about Macau’s culture\, heritage\, and legacy. Now it’s time to seek after their origins\, looking forward to the future witnessing the present economic growth at a faster pace. Placing side by side the younger and the older generation\, and confronting the idea that part of the identity boundaries is fading or even vanishing. Fat Tea documentary for the very first time in Macau highly contributed to give to know more about one of the key elements of Macau’s intangible cultural heritage within the Cultural and Creative Industries in the territory. \nWhen: November 20–26\, 2021 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Featured image above: Film still from “Radiograph of a Family” \nThe 5th Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF) takes place from July 9 to 25 and features a series of fantastic films to watch alone\, with your date\, family members and even friends. With screens at both Casa Garden and Cinema Alegria\, it discusses several themes across different generations\, focusing on vintage\, classics\, and new releases. If you’re interested in cinema and film\, then this is the ideal thing to do this summer. \nAs the first and only film festival dedicated to documentary film in Macao\, MOIDF hopes to build the bridge and connection between the documentary and Macau’s audience. \nAccording to the curating team\, “we have never been so dependent on videography to connect with the world. But could we simply connect with and understand the real world through videography? We have been forced to have a lot of “me time” by the pandemic. How could we stay at home on our own and reconcile with ourselves? Each film selected in this edition of the MOIDF\, perhaps\, tries to answer these questions. \nThis festival features films such as The Tree Remembers\, The Witches of the Orient\, Taivalu + A Study of Fly\, Minamata Mandala (Part I) and many more. \nThe pandemic fluctuations continue to persist in different countries\, alongside the wars and turmoils in various regions in the past two years\, the world seems to “get dark by the time”*. For cinema\, when it gets dark it means a new start — the start of a film. When the darkness is over\, the lights are back. From the world of cinema to the real world\, you might realize the world has changed a bit. Perhaps\, it is due to the fact that while directors present the cruel reality in the films they also offer covertly a glimpse of hope. Like a quote from The Metamorphosis of Birds\, one of the films in this edition of MOIDF\, “Every day the earth’s orbit changes\, as if it were telling us that we must change too.” We hope that the 5th MODIF\, after being suspended for a year\, could accompany everyone through films\, and envision the pandemic world from a new perspective. \nWhen: July 9–25\, 2021 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Casa Garden\, 13 Praça de Luís de Camões\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 (normal ticket)\, MOP $30 (discount ticket) per person \nFor more information\, check their official website or send them an email to info@moidf.com. SUMMARY:5th German Film Festival – KINO Macao 2020
DESCRIPTION:CUT Co. Ltd. partners with Goethe-Institut Hong Kong for the fifth time to present the popular German Film Festival – KINO Macau. Since the introduction to Macau by CUT in 2016\, the German Film Festival has gained popularity over the years and attracted a large turnout. \nKINO Macao\, on the other hand\, could continue to take place in physical form based on the situation of the city\, featuring a total of 12 outstanding German films\, six of which are the newest works covering a variety of topics. From an urban tale with stunning visuals to a refreshing German musical to a purposeful and powerful children’s film\, the films this year also pay attention to social and historical issues. \nThe program of KINO Macao 2020 continues to comprise the Director-in-Focus session\, which presents three major films of Margarethe von Trotta in different eras\, one of the significant directors and the only female auteur during the New German Cinema. There is also Wim Wenders 75 – Special Screening session this year\, presenting the documentary Desperado for the 75th birthday of the director and Wenders’ Faraway\, So Close!\, which won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Talks and post-screening sharing sessions are also highlights of KINO Macao 2020. \nOpening Film: Asia Premiere of Biography Work About Rainer Werner Fassbinder \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 highlights the works of three film masters in the New German Cinema\, including Margarethe von Trotta\, Wim Wenders\, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The opening film of the festival is Enfant Terrible directed by Oskar Roehler\, which focuses on the career of Fassbinder\, from his debut feature film Lover Is Colder Than Death in 1969 to the powerful\, vulgar-style Querelle in 1982 to his death at the age of 37. This movie legend once said\, “I don’t throw bombs\, I make films.” \nIn a life span of 37 years and a film career spanning over 13 years\, the number of Fassbinder’s works totaled 44\, including three short films\, a television series of five episodes\, and the 14-part Berlin Alexanderplatz. Whether the audiences watched his works at the Director-in-Focus session in KINO Macao 2018\, they could still know more about this inspiring film talent from another perspective this time. What is also thrilling is the screening of Enfant Terrible in Macao marks the Asia premiere of the film after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. \n \n“Rise Up! Women!” Director-in-Focus Session: Margarethe von Trotta \nInfluenced by the French New Wave\, the New German Cinema\, during the period between the 1960s and 1980s\, saw the emergence of numerous acclaimed directors. The most exceptional female director from this batch is Margarethe von Trotta\, who has started independent productions since the 1970s. Aged 78 now\, she has written and directed over 10 films\, including Marianne and Juliane (1981)\, Rosa Luxemburg (1986)\, Rosenstrasse (2003)\, and Hannah Arendt (2012)\, which are all highlights of the German cinema and showcase her distinctive auteur style. \nThe images of each female character in her works do not only break conventional gender stereotypes but are also exquisitely crafted to showcase the female aesthetics in the spiritual\, intellectual\, and independent aspects. The main visual design of KINO Macao 2020 is inspired by her masterpiece Rosa Luxemburg\, depicting the title character as a rose in pursuit of free will and freedom albeit hardship. Coincidentally\, many movies in KINO Macao 2020 are based on a female perspective\, from kids to the elderly\, from the past to the present\, each illustrating visionary and powerful women–perseverant\, intellectual\, and unique. \nWide Array of Outreach Activities to Enhance Depth and Scope \nApart from Cinema Alegria\, KINO Macao 2020 also takes place at Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, which boasts a serene environment for the screening of four major films — including System Crasher\, Rosa Luxemburg\, Marianne and Juliane\, and Faraway\, So Close! — followed by post-screening sharing sessions hosted by Macao film critic Quinton Tang\, Hong Kong film critic Joyce Yang\, and film scholar Dr. Derek Lam. Besides\, there are also four talks on different topics this year: Philosophy Workshop: “Do We All Have the Banality of Evil? — Hannah Arendt’s Philosophy”\, “Theatre and Rainer Werner Fassbinder”\, “Literature — Peter Handke and Wim Wenders”\, and “Judith Kerr’s World of Picture Books”. These talks allow the local audiences to engage with the film festival through artistic perspectives. \nThe German Film Festival — KINO Macao 2020 is the first film festival presented by CUT after the end of its operation of Cinematheque‧Passion. We are grateful for the continuous support from Goethe-Institut Hong Kong so that KINO Macao could be held once again. It is a challenging task to organize a film festival in the absence of venues\, funding\, and sponsorships\, but it’s fortunate that there is a group of vigorous and diligent film enthusiasts\, who work side by side to strive for the best results and to overcome any challenges. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There might be ups and downs along the path\, but as long as the audiences appreciate our efforts\, it is believed that our world will see the blooms of flowers one day. \nWhen: November 6–16\, 2020 \nWhere: Cinema Alegria\, 85D-85E Estrada do Repouso\, Macau and Macao Cardinal Newman Center for Culture and Performing Arts\, 27 Calçada da Vitória\, Macau \nHow much: TBA \nFor more information\, send an email to info.cutcompany@gmail.com or check the organizer’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Macau Experimental Video Festival (EXiM 2020)
DESCRIPTION:Called the “2+1+2 Program”\, EXiM 2020 kicks off with “Straightforward – Works by Chen Qiang” and “Heart to Heart – Experimental Video Exhibition”. Since 2018\, EXiM has been presented in exhibition format instead of screening. Works will not merely be screened\, but also be displayed via video installation. Doing so can better reflect the diversity in the creation of contemporary experimental image. \n“The year 2020 started in a weird way\, with the smartest creatures on the planet beginning to fear a virus emerging from nowhere absurdly. It is impossible to present an exhibition without exploring our current anxiety at this moment in time. When sorting out my past works\, I found that my thoughts on the living environment were buried in the “evolution” of my art. With the passage of time\, I have been constantly upgrading the accuracy of my focus in my works. These pieces directly and straightforwardly depict individual struggle and revel in the social tide.”\, the author of the works presented at “Straightforward”\, Chen Qiang\, explains. \nThe Chinese title of the exhibition comes from an old Hong Kong movie\, Sworn Brothers (Chinese:《肝膽相照》\, whose exact meaning is ‘to be trusted friends treating each other with sincerity’.) I chose the title for this event\, a showcase of Chinese experimental videos. In the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, I invite artists whose cities have just endured (or are still experiencing) long days of panic. The selected works are not just about the pandemic\, but about “life” at this very moment. \nMacau Experimental Video Festival: “Heart to Heart” – Experimental Video includes the works of the following artists: Chen Chen\, Lu Changbu\, Pu Yue Mei\, Wenhua Shi\, Tan Tan\, Tao Tao\, Zhou gang and Zhou zhang.\nWhen: September 17–October 18\, 2020 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, call +853 2853 0026\, send an email to oxwarehouse@gmail.com or \ncheck the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:Fashion Is an Attitude – A Film Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion brings the glamourous “Fashion Is an Attitude” – A Film Showcase happening from June 14 to 30. Split into three sessions: “Designer! Designer!”\, “Behind-the-scenes” and “On Cities and Clothiers”\, the festival features eleven works that explore the relationship between fashion and film. In addition\, Cinematheque Passion pays tribute to the selected films and their fashion designers by teaming up with local fashion brands\, designers\, make-up artists\, hairstylists\, models and photographers in producing compelling visuals. Costumes and hairstyles play important roles in film visuals; while Macau film workers deliver quality work. Cinematheque Passion hopes to showcase the various talents of local filmmakers and professionals. \nDesigner! Designer! comprised of features showing unforgettable fashion by brand designers. Starring timeless style icon Audrey Hepburn donning one outfit after another by the then-young-designer Hubert de Givenchy\, Funny Face is widely considered the ultimate byword for fashion films. Japanese maestro Kitano tells three quiet yet poignant tales of love in Dolls. This colorful and exquisite work becomes an ideal stage for Yohji Yamamoto\, who provided the costumes which\, in the film’s near silence\, seem to speak for the characters. Saint Laurent tells the story of fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent when he was at the creative helm of Dior\, at the young age of 21. In the hands of Jean Paul Gaultier\, the costumes in The Fifth Element are an unrepeatable showcase of his futuristic aesthetics. \n“Behind-the-scenes” is all about what fashion is. Different people have different interpretations. Three documentaries transport the audience into the fashion world. Jean Paul Gaultier: Freak & Chic looks back at the multi-disciplinary ‘Fashion Freak Show’ that Gaultier staged in 2018 – telling the story of his life with a most extravagant showcase of fashion\, film\, theatre and dance. Advanced Style documents stylish older women on the streets of New York. What started as a blog featuring these senior fashionistas evolved into a documentary depicting seven of Cohen’s subjects\, in their 60s to 80s\, setting out to break the stereotypes about beauty and aging with their confidently and uniquely styled outfits. Reiner Holzemer\, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed documentary Dries\, returns with Martin Margiela: In His Own Words\, featuring another Belgian designer\, the media-shy iconoclast Martin Margiela. \n“On Cities and Clothiers” session looks at the urbanity of some fashion cities – Paris\, Milan\, New York\, and Los Angeles. American director Robert Altman sets this film behind the scenes of the Paris Fashion Week in Ready to Wear. The sartorial story stars with the sudden death of the Fashion Council head which sets off a chain reaction involving his wife and her mysterious lover\, probing journalists\, and a heart-breaker photographer. Apart from his collaboration with multinational brands like Fendi and Valentino\, Guadagnino\, who shot to international fame with Call Me By Your Name\, has shown his keen sense of and interest in fashion as early as in I Am Love. \nWoody Allen’s early romantic classic Annie Hall captures the life of the world’s fashion capital\, New York. The role of Annie (Diane Keaton) breaks from the typical feminine image\, and her signature men’s tie and vest look still have its effects on the fashion world today. Her decidedly cool androgynous style made her an enduring fashion icon in film history. Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn dials his style up to the max in the intriguing The Neon Demon\, immersing the audience’s senses in a mesmerizing audio-visual feast of neon lights\, electronica\, and carnality. Tickets are available from June 11 (Thursday\, starting at 10:00am) online and at the Cinematheque Passion ticket office. \nWhen: June 14–30\, 2020 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person. \nFull-time students and senior citizens age 65 or above can enjoy 50% discount. SUMMARY:New Year's Eve Double Bill - "City Lights" X "Years of Macau"
DESCRIPTION:Cinematheque Passion brings Macau audience a New Year’s Eve Double Bill of Charlie Chaplin’s classic “City Lights” and the hotly-anticipated “Years of Macau” featuring nine local directors’ stories on December 28\, 29 and 31. Take an over-100-years cinematic adventure with and feel the magic cinema brings to a city! In Cantonese and English with Chinese and English subtitles. \nLights are shed on images through projection\, what follows is changes in urban cultural life. In 1895\, when the first ever film The Arrival of a Train came out\, the audience thought a real train was coming directly at them. They were scared and screamed\, but shortly afterwards realized the magic of cinema. When cinema appears in a city\, magical or fantastical things could happen. In the early years\, cinema meant silent films. After a few decades\, sound took the main stage. The film City Lights appeared at this cinematic crossroads\, as Charlie Chaplin closed off the silent film era with this classic. The film also saw Chaplin’s career peak. He poked fun at the world through the love story of a poor man and a blind woman. The idea of true love returns after sacrifice warms up the heart of the indifferent city. \nIn 1910\, Macau had its first cinema\, Teatro Vitoria. Macao people got to enjoy the magic of cinema; however\, local filmmaking started its journey in the last decade. Years of Macau gathers works by nine local filmmakers on the important 20th anniversary of the Macau handover. The filmmakers chose a year during these two decades as the background for their stories\, including the 10th anniversary of the handover\, the 2012 phenomenon\, and Typhoon Hato in 2017. They show how the city’s citizens got through all the difficulties in this little town\, as well as their moving life experiences. \nFrom City Lights (1931) to Years of Macau (2019) there is a century-long interval. Filmmaking happens in different corners of the world endlessly. No matter how much difficulties and changes\, life experiences remain the key theme of cinema. Towards the end of 2019\, many miraculous things will happen. Let’s sit in the cinema\, enjoy the films and wait for the next miracle. \nWhen: Saturday\, Sunday and Tuesday\, December 28\, 29 and 31\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, visit their website

SUMMARY:“Reflecting on the Human Condition: A Retrospective of Roy Andersson’s Films”
DESCRIPTION:Featured image: Still from Andersson’s film “Second Floor” \nCinematheque．Passion presents a retrospective of 76-year-old Swedish film director Roy Andersson’s compelling storytelling between December 20 and 23\, 2020. Andersson’s latest work just earned him Best Director award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. What fascinates his fans is his signature narrative elements\, such as tableaux-like structure\, actors with white-painted\, pasty-looking faces\, deep existential thinking\, long shots\, absurdity. In this retrospective\, four works are featured to discuss his creative path. \nAndersson’s first feature A Swedish Love Story (1970)\, featuring a coming-of-age summer love story\, shows Andersson’s being influenced by Italian Neo-Realism narrative. Andersson changed his style completely in his next feature. No producer in Sweden wanted to work with him\, but this misfortune became a blessing in disguise. For the next 25 years\, Andersson worked in advertising and did like many other art film directors: he made ads to fund his own independent filmmaking. \nSongs from the Second Floor (2000)\, Andersson’s third feature film met with critical acclaim\, winning the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. When You\, the Living (2007) came out 7 years later\, it was clear that a trilogy was in the making. Throughout the trilogy\, we find sequences where characters look/speak directly at the camera\, and where the boundary between reality and dream\, past and present\, is blurred. You\, the Living (2007) contains several scenes where characters describe a recent dream; the following scenes depict that dream or nightmare. These dream sequences capture humanity's dreams and fears\, and the best and worst of how we treat each other. \nThe final film in the trilogy\, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014)\, also mixes past and present time. It is also the first Swedish film to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. In several anachronistic sequences\, historical figures (or elements) from the past\, such as King Charles XII of Sweden\, appear in present time. \nWhen: Friday–Monday\, December 20–23\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 per person \nFor more information\, check their official website

The festival features ten recent thought-provoking German works\, two “Macao Special” films and four compelling works from director-in-focus Volker Schlöndorff\, followed by a talk that will explore the artistic practice of this German film maestro. \nAdapted from a real-life event\, opening film Balloon transports the audience back forty years when Germany was split between the East and West. Portraying a family that plans to escape East Germany to the West in a hot-air balloon\, this compelling film depicts people’s hope and fight for freedom. \nBased on a sensational “honor” killing event\, A Regular Woman charts a Muslim woman’s experience of oppression. Gundermann unveils the relationship between East German secret police Stasi and Gerhard Gundermann\, an East German singer-songwriter who tragically died in 1998. Roads is about the friendship between two young men in search of their beloved ones throughout a hilarious and exciting journey. The Most Beautiful Couple investigates hidden desire through the traumatic and dark experience of a middle-class couple. Sweethearts brings you a moving friendship between single-mother-and-criminal Mel and her hostage. 25 km/h unites two brothers at their father’s funeral\, and a journey for the meaning of life develops. Documentary Chris the Swiss traces the mysterious death journalist Chris\, who is the director’s admired cousin. The Collini Case uncovers a scandal from World War I and a murder. In The Mover\, 60-year-old mover Walter kicks tenants out their houses for a money-laundering syndicate\, until one day he faces a dilemma: the tenants he has to kick out are his son and daughter-in-law. \nStill from The Collini Case\, 2018 | Courtesy of Cinematheque Passion \nDirector-in-focus explores Volker Schlöndorff\, German film maestro and prominent figure of New German Cinema movement\, turns 80 this year. His remarkable works have earned him the Palme d’Or and Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. His portfolio spans over thirty works and performing arts works. The session\, which offers a broad view of his creative paths spanning twenty years\, features Baal (1969)\, Young Törless (1965) and The Legend of Rita (2000). These hard-hitting works illustrate Schlöndorff’s excellent adaptations of the literary canon and criticize social oppression through the character of the rebellious anti-hero. Led by Dr. Derek Lam\, a film talk follows to give an in-depth understanding of Schlöndorff’s practice. \nMacao Specials with talks by famous authors Lotte at the Bauhaus depicts a young woman as she strives for emancipation and creative development. Before the screening\, German author Theresia Enzensberger gives a talk on women during Bauhaus’s early years. Another work exclusively for Macau audiences is Babylon Berlin Ep. 1-2. Combining the first two episodes of this high-budget and chic TV series\, the screening brings us the thrilling story of Gereon Rath\, a police inspector on a secret mission in the Weimar Republic during the post- World War One period. The screening is followed by a talk by writer Arne Jysch\, who adapted the original book into a graphic novel. \nWhen: October 19–November 13\, 2019 \nWhere: Cinematheque Passion\, 13 Travessa da Paixão\, Macau \nHow much: MOP $60 \nFull-time students and senior citizens age 65 or above can enjoy 50% discount \nTickets are available from Saturday\, October 5\, 2019 onwards \nFor more information\, call +853 2852 2585 or check their website \nStill from Balloon\, 2019 | Courtesy of Cinematheque Passion
