SUMMARY:Profound – Works by David Sheekwan
DESCRIPTION:Albergue SCM and ALBcreativeLAB and Arts Empowering Lab are presenting the exhibition Profound – Works by David Sheekwan\, till July\, 2021 at the art space At Light. The exhibition is separated into two parts. The first one is held in the gallery At Light\, and the second part takes place in Albergue SCM. It features around 25 oil and ink paintings that David Sheekwan created recently in his home in Zhongshan. \nThe paintings in the exhibition feature Sheekwan’s minimalist and monochromatic style in subdued colors. A series of paintings incorporate twigs\, branches\, and pieces of wood and sand to give them different textures and highlight the different shades of colors and light. By placing these simple materials on a flat background\, the artist turns something ordinary into something extraordinary with this collage of everyday objects. Picasso and Braque invented modern collage by incorporating real objects into their paintings. David Sheekwan had been curious about the cosmos since he was a child and this is a recurrent theme in his artistic creations. The cosmos is so dark and mysterious and he wants to explore it\, to see how humans exist in the gigantic cosmos. His abstract ink and wash paintings show his unique observation of colors\, lines\, and proportions. His painting style is simple but mysterious–his paintings always leave a space to make people think. \nHe is based in the 4\,400 square meters Cuiheng creation base for art and culture. Sheekwan trained in ceramics and paintings on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1955\, then went to Paris where he opened his own design studio. He enjoyed great success in styling and designing fabrics and fashions for various fabric houses\, including New York’s Concord Fabrics. In 1972\, Sheekwan returned to his native Hong Kong to start his own fashion kingdom\, David & David. He designed the costumes of the stage play “A Story of White Serpent” which starred and was directed by Rebecca Pan Dihua. He also designed the costumes for the stage productions of “Warrior Lan Ling” by Willy Tsao and “Testimony” by Helen Lai Hoi Ling. In 1981\, he invested in the movie “Love Massacre” directed by Patrick Tam Kar-Ming and starring Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia. \nIn the 1980s\, he embarked on a new venture to be an artist and entered the Parson’s School of Design\, and attended photography classes at the University of California in Los Angeles. He published his first photography book\, “Photographs by David Sheekwan” in 1999. In 2013\, he held a painting and photography exhibition at the Cuiheng Art Museum\, exhibiting 38 recent oil paintings and photography. In 2019\, 1-Art Gallery in Shanghai held an exhibition of Sheekwan’s oil and ink paintings. \nWhen: May 15–June 26\, 2021 \nWhere: At Light\, 1 Pátio do Padre Narciso\, Macau and Gallery A2\, Albergue SCM\, 8 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check here

SUMMARY:Stories of the Sea – The Eighth Chapter at The Manor
DESCRIPTION:The latest evolution of The Manor’s Stories of the Sea – the Eighth Chapter – offering a wealth of seafood extravagance and showcasing the finest ingredients of seas of the world is finally here! The six-course menu\, crafted by Executive Sous Chef Michele Dell’Aquila was designed to highlight the freshness of the seafood and tantalize the tastebuds with exceptional flavor and texture. \nSignature dishes of Stories of the Sea – the Eighth Chapter\, include fresh Belon Oyster served with yuzu sorbet and tapioca passion fruit\, and aged raspberry vinegar foam. The acidity of the citrus and berries balance the saltiness and strong flavors of the oyster\, providing a sense of freshness on the palate. The eighth iteration of the Stories of the Sea menu includes seared sturgeon capped with Baerii caviar and a selection of rich side dishes featuring French Ratte potatoes\, then followed by smoked Atlantic mackerel with green beans\, soaked in tuna fish broth and garnished with mackerel tartare and Oscietra caviar. To maintain the tender texture of the fish\, Chef Michele uses a variety of cooking techniques to maximize flavors\, including searing\, smoking\, and the gentle sous-vide method that slowly cooks the fish in a vacuum over a longer time to preserve the delicate nature of the fish. \nThe sous vide rock fish Kasago paired with black ink orzo and sakura shrimp\, cress and zucchini flower\, and succulent Mediterranean sea bass with baby fennel and seaweed butter\, salt pickled cherry blossom powder and Loire Valley asparagus will both satisfy guests with their robust yet simple flavors. \nFor a perfect end\, the Strawberry Sensation featuring strawberries imported from France will delight with a strawberry mousse and light ganache with strawberries freshly marinated and balanced with an intensely flavored basil ice cream. The carefully curated wine pairing has been prepared by Sommelier David Duan\, featuring a selection of premier wines from France\, Italy\, New Zealand\, and Germany\, matching perfectly with the ocean flavors of each course. \nWhen: May 13–September 30\, 2021 \nWhere: The Manor\, The St. Regis Macao\, The Londoner Macao\, Estrada do Istmo\, s/n\, Cotai \nHow much: MOP $888 per person\, MOP $1\,288 (with wine pairing) \nFor more information and bookings\, check their website\, call +853 2882 8898 or send an email to themanor.macao@stregis.com \nKasago rock fish with black ink orzo

SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program – Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself
DESCRIPTION:“Post-truth: Fool Others As Well As Oneself” is an experiment of media expansion undertaken by artist Wang Yan Xin from Lanzhou\, who utilizes performance art as the major medium that is complemented by videography\, installations\, photography\, painting\, and other means. This experiment of cross-media artistic creation initiates the discussions for oneself starting from an artist-in-residence project in Macau and explores the possibilities of artistic creation through a game-based approach. \nIncorporating Macau as space and the artist-in-residence project\, Wang Yan Xin creates this series based on self-observation and awareness of the weakness\, vulnerability\, and pretense of oneself. There are questions over what makes one look tough in appearance\, what makes one feel fear\, and what makes one feel powerless\, leading to critical thinking of oneself. Friedrich Nietzsche says\, “There are no facts\, only interpretations.” Different events only represent different interpretations. As “emotions are more influential than facts”\, lies can be interpreted as “another point of view” or “an opinion” because “everything is relative” and “everyone has their own truth”. Thus\, this project is also an experiment of the reconstruction of “truth” by oneself. \nWhen: May 1–30\, 2021 \nWhere: Ox Warehouse\, 15 Rua do Volong\, GF\, 1F & 2F Gallery\, Macau \nHow much: Free admission \nFor more information\, check the event’s Facebook page

SUMMARY:31st Macao Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Macao Arts Festival (MAF) dramatically lights up the city every early summer\, bringing together theater\, dance\, music\, circus\, multimedia and visual arts in an artistic panorama of events. A mix of local\, regional and international performers from various regions and countries around the world present a diversity of programs. This year’s MAF will focus on productions from Mainland China and Macau\, presenting nearly 100 events including outreach activities in various districts\, establishing a display and exchange platform\, expanding the artistic vision and enhancing the aesthetic perception of its audience. \nThe grand opening White Snake by Lin Zhaohua Theatre Studio from Beijing\, redesigns the characters of the classic folktale The Legend of the White Snake in an artistic and creative way\, combing theatre\, music\, dance and multimedia art. The closing performance Taking Leave is a production adapted from American contemporary playwright Nagle Jackson’s namesake play by the National Theatre of China. In this play\, the National First Class Director Wang Xiaoying will lead a cast of veteran actors to interpret the story of an acclaimed actor who used to play the role of King Lear\, who was approaching the end of his life\, wandering between reality and imagination\, allowing the audience to witness the fragility and eternity of life. \nThe Jin Xing Dance Theatre from Shanghai\, one of the top modern dance companies in China\, acclaimed by critics as “an important unit in the history of Chinese dance”\, presents two works\, namely Wild Flower and Trinity. In Wild Flower\, the dancers interpret a wild flower’s tenacious existence through marathon-esque non-stop dancing and movement\, liberating themselves from the bonds of body and mind. The show Trinity\, a performance of works by three renowned choreographers\, namely Jin Xing\, Emanuel Gat and Arthur Kuggeleyn\, explores women’s independent existence and physiological space within each’s distinctive movements\, and illustrates the courage and strength among people through dancers’ bodies\, inspiring artistic appeal and avant-garde ideas. \nThe Coloane game \nHuangmei Opera is a national intangible cultural heritage. The Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre presents a new production of the classic play Dream of the Red Chamber. The play was created in the 1990s with Yu Qiuyu and Chen Xiting as the core creative team\, starring Ma Lan\, among other artists\, who innovated the classics together from a new perspective. The play instantly gained much reputation\, and thus became a reserved play in the theatre. On the MAF stage\, the play will be performed by the new generation of Huangmei opera actors\, passing on tradition and innovation. \nThe Macao Arts Festival establishes a display and exchange platform that has witnessed the professional development of local art groups\, which illustrates Macau’s cultural diversity from different perspectives. The dance theatre Drunken Dragon Dance by Four Dimension Spatial innovates the festive tradition with contemporary dance elements; the documentary theatre See You through Memories by Soda-City Experimental Workshop Arts Association\, explores the past and present landscapes of Patane\, reviewing the transformation of the city; Dance Duo recounts the transformation of the local dancer Kam Hiu Lam in a decade\, presenting her dance dialogue with choreographer Chou Shu-Yi and her joint creation with Wang Yuanqing; The Never-ending Task of Lust for Failure by Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association creates a worldview map beyond languages\, labels and disabilities of the special-needs; Property Guide at Lou Kau Mansion by Jay Lei and Shuk Man Lee and A Short Time Escape by Lei Sam I\, which were premiered at the Macao City Fringe Festival and were recommended by the artistic advisors of the Macao City Fringe Festival\, will be staged at the Macao Arts Festival again. \nMAF also encourages parents and children to enjoy artistic experiences. On the Other Side of Macao – A magical adventure by Bernardo Amorim\, a plastic arts and multimedia artist based in Macao\, brings the magic of narrative to life with the use of puppets and video mapping; The Coloane Game by Dream Theater Association offers guided tours visiting streets and alleys of Coloane\, experiencing the residents’ spirit of mutual help and the prosperity and decline of the shipbuilding industry; the artistic and cultural performances Performing Arts Gala at the Iao Hon Market Park for three consecutive nights\, inject vitality in the community through the arts. The Children’s Story World and art exploration activities will also be available this year\, and all are welcome to enjoy the world of art. \nDrunken dragon dance \nInjecting artistic vitality into traditional culture\, students from the Cantonese Opera Course at the School of Theatre of the Macao Conservatory step on the stage to present the Cantonese Opera Jiufeng Mountain; the Patuá theatre comments on all crucial issues of the city\, including current affairs\, humanism\, and dialect. This year\, the Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group presents a hilarious production Boss for a Day\, keeping the full house of the audience in stitches. The Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra present the classics of Mozart and a musical feast that combine traditional Chinese culture and modern aesthetics concepts\, respectively\, carrying out a musical dialogue between the East and the West. \nRen Dongsheng\, a National First Class Stage Designer\, is dedicated to exploring stage design. He produced a collection of poetic\, vibrant\, and epochal works by repeatedly reviewing style\, color\, and techniques. The “Imagery and Space: Ren Dongsheng Scenography Exhibition” leads the audience to transcend spatial dimensions and experience the charm of scenography. Baptiste Rabichon\, an emerging contemporary French photographic artist\, will present “A Room with a View: Baptiste Rabichon Photography Exhibition”\, whose works with a technique that combines traditional and innovative elements\, introducing the contemporary expressions of photography and exploring the possibilities of artistic creation. \nWhen: April 30–May 29\, 2021 \nWhere: Macao Cultural Centre\, Avenida Xian Xing Hai s/n\, NAPE\, Macau\, Old Court Building\, 459 Av. da Praia Grande\, Macau\, Macau Contemporary Art Center\, Rua de S. SUMMARY:“Stay\, Dine and See Macao” Tours
DESCRIPTION:The “Stay\, Dine and See Macao” project’s new phase starts in April\, 2021 and its highlights features helicopter rides across the city’s skies\, as well as yacht experiences as well. Due to the rising number of applications for helicopter trips\, the government has created a system of drawing\, where applicants are chosen through a lucky draw. The project offers a wide range of different city tours for both residents and non-residents to enjoy. Interested residents can sign up at travel agencies under the umbrella of the project which not only covers a range of local tours but also introduces experiences at local hotels. \nEvery permanent and non-permanent resident of the Macao Special Administrative Region is entitled to a one-time subsidy for each of both categories–local tour and hotel staycation. The project is tailored to support travel industry professionals by creating job opportunities as a form of relief\, while joining industry operators to invest resources in launching remarkable local tour itineraries\, spurring new rises in domestic demand and spending in local communities. \nTours are available on weekends and public holidays from April throughout December with an increase of the number of tours during the summer month of July and August. An array of local profound-themed tour itineraries will be launched at the first stage. The helicopter ride experience–which gained wide popularity last year–is available once again. New highlights such as “tourism + culture”\, “tourism + sports” and “tourism + ecology” are incorporated into different tour itineraries. \nThe six tour itineraries feature elements as follows: exploring architectures at Nossa Senhora Village of Ká Hó\, science learning at Cotai Ecological Zone\, Macao VR/Celebrity Wax Museum\, Macao Grand Prix Museum and Handover Gifts Museum of Macao\, youth music and cultural appreciation experience\, helicopter ride experience and yacht check-in tour. Every Macau resident is entitled to a maximum of 280-patacas subsidy for local tour participation\, as well as a 100-patacas dining card (except for the helicopter ride experience and the yacht check-in tour). After subsidized\, the tour fee ranges between MOP $28 and MOP $518 patacas for the six tour itineraries\, covering sightseeing\, tour guide\, and insurance fees. The local tours will be conducted in Cantonese\, Portuguese and English according to the residents’ needs. \nSince the start of the pandemic\, “staycation” has emerged as a prevailing new trend. For Macau residents to enjoy the joy of short vacations while it is not possible yet to travel abroad\, the project “Stay\, Dine and See Macao” newly incorporates the experience of local hotels from Monday to Sunday as well as on public holidays. Many hotels have joined this project to provide a variety of staycation experiences for patrons. Some hotels also offer staycation packages that include other tourism products\, while others feature partnerships with products of community businesses. \nInterested residents can opt for their favorite local tour itineraries or local hotels from the “Stay\, Dine and See Macao” project at the sales outlets of accredited travel agencies with their valid Macao SAR IDs\, confirm their preferred tour date and time or hotel check-in date and complete the sign-up formalities by payment. \nThe project includes the participation of more than 160 travel agencies\, over 800 travel industry professionals\, more than 70 hotels and guest houses\, over 500 tour coaches (including barrier-free tour coaches)\, over 500 tour coach drivers and over 500 local tour guides. MGTO expressed that the project aims to support local travel agencies\, the hotel and catering industries\, to sustain the livelihood of personnel of travel agencies\, tour guides\, coach drivers and employees of related sectors while providing an initiative for residents to enjoy local dining\, sightseeing and hotel staycation economically. The project is set to spur rises in domestic demand and spending in communities\, leading to further recovery of tourism and related industries. \nWhen: Local tours – April 25–June\, 2021 and September to December\, 2021 (Weekends and public holidays)\, July and August\, 2021 (daily) \nStaycation promotions – April 23–December 31\, 2021 \nWhere: Local tours – Departing from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal\, Porto Exterior\, Macau \nStaycations – Check-in at the selected hotel \nHow much: For each of the six city tours – Subsidy up to MOP $280 per resident (tours cost between MOP $28 and $518 per resident) \nStaycation promotions – Subsidy up to MOP $200 per resident \nFor more information\, bookings and payments\, call +853 8396 3052\, send an email to info@lovemacau.org\, or click here.
