In order to celebrate the International Museum Day on May 18, 14 museums in Macau co-organized the annual Macao International Museum Day Carnival, themed The Mobile Museum – Praia Grande x Cultural Hub. The theme chosen by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for International Museum Day 2019 is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”, which in the broader sense suggests giving new meaning to traditions, including creating a communication platform where the public can co-create and share. The carnival aims to break through the geographical barriers between museums and inject them with new vitality by connecting them through the history of Praia Grande. It not only reflects the unique culture of Macao, but also gathers creativity to create synergies at the International Day Carnival.
On that day, the museums will host a rich variety of activities, including VR racing experience next to Nam Van Lake, storytelling of the “History and Evolution of the Streets in Praia Grande”, workshops on “Pedal Boat in Nam Van Lake, Clay, Music Box”, and miniatures of Macanese dishes in resin clay. There are also others, such as a workshop of miniatures of dragon boats in resin clay, a DIY craft workshop with recycled wine bottle for families and much more!
In addition, the current exhibition featuring 3D printing technology at the educational section of the exhibition “Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum” held at the Macao Museum of Art, part of programme of “Art Macao”, will be moved to Anim’Arte NAM VAN for public exhibition during the Carnival. It also features game booths designed with diverse themes, such as “Understanding Cultural Relics of Western Xia Dynasty”, “Swerving in Car Race”, “Magical Science of Mechanical Clocks” and fire safety. Prior registration is required for some activities.
As the International Museum Day approaches, the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) holds a series of excellent programmes in May. In conjunction with joint-museum activities at the Macao International Museum Day Carnival on May 12, MAM invited Lai Ieng, the artist of the current exhibition Strolling and Feeling: Watercolour Paintings of Lai Ieng held at the MAM, to host the Workshop Painting Nam Van with Uncle Ieng: Parent-child Water Colour Painting Workshop.
Renowned Macau watercolour artist, Lai Ieng, will introduce participants the techniques of watercolour painting, such as ways for controlling colour and water and mixing colours, and will teach the skills required for landscape sketching on-site. On the Carnival day, visitors can take photographs in a setting based on the scenic landscape depicted by Lai Ieng, and play in the game booths at the Museum.
In order to encourage people of all ages and abilities to appreciate art, MAM and the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph jointly established an educational area for the exhibition “Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum”, presenting the exhibition’s drawings with 3D printing technology for visitors to experience art from multiple perspectives. On the Carnival day, a display area with 3D printing technology will be set up, extending artistic creativity to the community. On the International Museum Day, a 3D printing experience workshop will be held, promoting exploration experience without barriers. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s Handover to China, together with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of MAM.
The Macao Chinese Orchestra and the Macao Orchestra also present a number of musical pieces at the above-mentioned exhibitions on May 25 and 26, respectively, bringing the audience an audiovisual experience. Both of the above exhibitions are integrated in the series of programmes of the Art Macao. In addition, there will be activities designated for children and families in May: “Little Artist” and “Family Art”.
