The Macao Museum of Art under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S. A. R. Government has been dedicated to fostering domestic and international art exchanges as well as promoting splendid Chinese culture. Since its opening in 1999, the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) has organized, under the generous support of museums and other cultural entities from Mainland China, multiple large-scale calligraphy and painting exhibitions that have showcased masterpieces of epochal significance in the history of Chinese fine arts. The events have garnered a wide enthusiastic response from academic circles and art lovers from around the world. This year, with a focus on Zhang Daqian (1899 – 1983), MAM joins hands with the Sichuan Museum to present ‘The Art of Zhang Daqian’. Zhang Daqian had been one of the most influential painters and calligrapher in contemporary art history with his unparalleled artistic style.
This exhibition features a total of 100 pieces (sets) including his emulations of Dunhuang murals, landscape and figure paintings before and after his journey to Dunhuang, line drawings, correspondences and the seals he used. These seals, reflecting his philosophy of life and art, were mainly created by famous seal carvers, while two pieces carved by Zhang Daqian himself reveal the artist’s profound artistic accomplishment.
