This theater work depicts the situation of women in wartime and postwar times, concerning the issues of War and Gender. It is not the dichotomy on women and men; however, performers are both men and women on stage to show the humanity through their multiple roles, especially the quality of female soldiers. Regardless of the past and present, the people in wartime are treated as “consumable”. After the war, women are even classified as “defective” and hardly could successfully integrate into family and society. Even if women are not in prison, their physical and mental states are still “imprisoned” in dark corners of somewhere.
This experimental theater work is interdisciplinary with drama, music and movements; in particular, weaving handcraft delivers another layer of concept “Strings of Longing in Hands” into the play, which inspired from the lack of resources during or after wars. People have to maintain their life by hard labor work or creating things from few materials left around. For women, handicraft is no longer an interest or a hobby after wars; they must live on with this technique. Through which, women could perhaps deliver happiness when giving to someone else, or obtain some profit when selling to people. The least but the most important is that they could receive personal healing and enjoyment in the process of making.
