Honoring the best in Asia’s culinary scene cannot be halted not even in the time of COVID-19. Due to the impact of a pandemic on a global scale, the need to recognize the gastronomic community hasn’t been of paramount importance till now. The recent virtual edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020 was a clear manifestation that we can support each other and celebrate the best and brightest in the world of food no matter the restriction or situation.
United in front of our social media channels, we applauded the tireless efforts of the brilliant men and women behind the kitchens that have moved our senses. The newly announced edition of the list may have arrived in a different form than the usual, but nonetheless, it shines a positive light into the darkness that we’ve somehow found ourselves in. The aim to keep the community connected, and to prepare for recovery once the situation improves echoed loud and clear at the celebration of the very best of gastronomy in Asia.
Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants culminated with a countdown from Number 50 to Number 1 eventually revealing the best restaurant in Asia of 2020. The countdown also featured a series of special awards for restaurants and individuals, rewarding all facets of the hospitality industry. The virtual appearances by many of Asia’s most recognizable cooks and restaurateurs, as well as a few surprise special guests, were also heartwarming details of one of the anticipated events in the region now unveiled in the virtual world.
HOW ASIA’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS ARE DETERMINED
Since it’s launch in 2013, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has become a benchmark of success for many dining destinations in the region. It began with three years in the vibrant city of Singapore, followed by two in beautiful Bangkok and most recently two in the spectacular scenery of Macau. The prestigious affair annually gathers Asia’s most respected chefs and restaurateurs.
An influential group of over 300 leaders in the restaurant industry across Asia is selected for their expert opinion of Asia’s restaurant scene. They comprise Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy who vote for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. The panel in each of the six regions is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs, and highly regarded experts. Members list their choices in order of preference, based on their best restaurant experiences of the previous 18 months. There is no pre-determined checklist of criteria, but there are strict voting rules. The award-giving body works with professional services consultancy Deloitte as its official independent adjudication partner to help protect the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list is published by William Reed Business Media, which also publishes The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, launched in 2002, and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, launched in September 2013, as well as The World’s 50 Best Bars and Asia’s 50 Best Bars. The media group is entirely responsible for the organization of the awards, the voting system, and the list.
