Cinematheque Passion presents its first film festival this year, “Director-in-Focus: AMOR Almodóvar”, from February 13 to March 3, 2019. This retrospective reveals the compelling and wild cinematic magic of world-renowned Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar. The programme showcases thirteen of the director’s works, including Oscar winners All About My Mother (1999), Talk to Her (2002) and Volver (2006), whose six female cast ensemble shared the Best Actress awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
The festival is one of the most complete retrospectives of Almodóvar’s work in the Chinese-language area until now with two screenings of each feature. Almodóvar is highly regarded as one of the most important directors in contemporary Spain and Europe. His films are marked by the use of strong colours, radical mood swings and sidesplitting humour. The themes of his films are manifold, from sophisticated and intelligent women to families with intricate life and death issues, to passionate lesbian lovers.
Almodóvar’s films receive rave responses from critics and audience alike with his signature cinematic elements, including bright costumes and sets, hilarious jokes, soulful Spanish guitar music and moving stories about women. The programme features Julieta, Dark Habits, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Law of Desire, High Heels, Live Flesh, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, Broken Embraces, Talk to Her, All About My Mother, Bad Education and Volver.
Given by Hong Kong veteran film critic Ka Ming, the film talk “Make Room for Pedro Almodóvar: The Unorthodox Genius of Spanish Cinema”, conducted in Cantonese with English simultaneous interpretation, the talk explores Almodóvar’s work and his ground-breaking storytelling with the audience.
Join the opening party and enjoy live Spanish music and food on February 16. Focusing on the enchanting cinematic elements and themes of Almodóvar’s work, the fun- packed party will get the audience in the mood for Almodóvar’s wild cinematic magic before watching the opening feature.
