Here are some top reads specially selected to keep your literary side in shape this summer!
Age Of Ambition, written by Evan Osnos
This is the perfect book for curious people. With one of the world’s biggest populations and vast amounts of power and influence, China is a country everyone should know about. This is what Osnos brings to the reader – comprehensive knowledge about the country’s development, its people, its fortune and numbers to keep it all real. Age Of Ambition is a somewhat light book that allows the reader to maintain interest and learn about the economy and society in which we live in.
Big Breasts & Wide Hips, by Mo Yan
Another book about China – this is an essential bestseller about contemporary life in the country. However, for one to understand the present world we live in, one should dwell into the past – and that is what the Chinese writer does in this book. Some claim Big Breasts, Wide Hips is an autobiographical piece and it just might be. Set all over China (rural and urban) across time starting during the last emperor’s ruling and going through to the Cultural Revolution, this is one of the most intense and revealing books from this century regarding a country that is so much more than factories and agriculture. Though long, Big Breasts & Wide Hips is so addictive you will not even notice the pages passing. Mo Yan was awarded with the Nobel Prize of Literature in 2012.
This is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl
This is an autobiographical book about Foo Fighters’ vocalist. It brings us all back to when grunge music started. Light in its writing, but pungent in its context, this book deserves an attentive read. It not only tells Grohl’s story, but it takes into account several moments which are now part of our history. Before being Foo Fighters’ frontman, the author was Nirvana’s drummer – and a really good one. Read about his time and experiences with Kurt Cobain and much more.
Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs, by Henry Carroll
This book reveals an interesting approach to the art of photography. This is a simple and light initiation for newbies in this area. Readable during a bus trip, an afternoon on the beach or before heading to bed, it gives great tips for those who are planning to freeze their summer experiences with their cameras.
Last Evenings on Earth, from the acclaimed Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño
This is a powerful set of short stories about life in the author’s country. The events are set in Latin America and Europe. They deal with the life of the Chilean diaspora and events such as the military coup and the Latin culture.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S. Thompson
This should not need much introduction but if you haven’t read it it’s on this list because you need to, now. It is one of the biggest and best North American literary pieces of the 20th century. Thompson had a way of living reality as fiction and writing fiction as reality, which is precisely what he did in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Try read these crazy adventures while sipping a cocktail on the beach (better than watching it on screen indoors if you see the movie based on the book). The story follows two crazed adventurers on a car and casino adventure with drugs and the American dream as starting point. The author is keen on his depiction of the 60s counterculture, which he comments on with irony and a lot of sarcasm. It’s a novel about going against the norm – it will leave you with a pumping heart.
