Built in 1860, Dom Pedro V Theatre is located in front of St. Augustine’s Church and a place filled with history. In fact, this was the first Western-style theater in China, making it a remarkable landmark in town. At the time, it was the principal venue for opera and music concerts, but also dance performance. Besides the main shows’ hall, the building featured a ballroom and reading and snooker rooms. Nowadays, besides being home to most of Macao Orchestra and Macau Chinese Orchestra concerts, the building is used for theatrical performances and recitals.
The charming green and white property features a neoclassical style, much like the majority of European theatres of its time. The performance hall has a capacity of 276 seats which are spread in curved rows on ground level and on the semi-circular balcony seating area.
In 2005, Dom Pedro V Theatre became one of the designated sites of the Historic Centre of Macao listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
