The Macao Museum of Art is temporarily closed until further notice due to having been affected by Typhoon Hato.
In the 1980s, abstract paintings entered Macao, playing a prominent role in Macao modern art. Abstract painting has transcended the limitations of painting, whose initial themes stressed realistic representation. Basic elements of painting were combined partially or entirely in an abstract manner, creating an abstract form, influencing the mindset of painting development in Macao.
This exhibition showcases nearly 30 works representative of the abstract collection including installations with rich painting qualities. The painting media and techniques used include ink wash, mixed techniques, mixed media, ready-mades, oil paints, acrylic paints, etc. The artists have conducted outstanding experimentation and exploration on the integrated techniques of abstract paintings and mixed materials with successful achievements. The works display strong personal styles through the subjective abstract composition of shapes and colors or independent thinking with symbolic meaning regarding ready-mades. The variety of art forms has fully resembled the laborious navigation of abstract art languages explored by Macao artists since the 1980s, whose works feature immense open-minded artistic characteristics of the Sino-Western cultural integration in Macao.
