Hiu Kok Drama Association is an experimental theater and dance association founded in 1975 by local artists, Lawrence Lei and Yu Meng Sang. Their mission is to promote quality work in order to promote theater activities in Macau. Although the birthplace of ideas, the Hiu Kok Drama Association has also toured and performed throughout China and Hong Kong–such as Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taiwan–but also internationally in Singapore and Portugal. Hiu Kok was Chinese writer’s Lu Xun last known pseudonym and that’s where the group’s title came from.
Hiu Kok Drama Association rents its space to other theater clubs, associations and lovers to perform and rehearse. They also have the Hiu Kok Laboratory. Set up in 1999, it’s the first small theater in Macau run by a non-governmental institution. It can accommodate an audience of up to 80 people, allowing other organizations to perform and hold their own events there. The association’s laboratory has also introduced the training program Series for New Directors for new and upcoming directors.
The association also cooperates with countless other theater groups from all over the region, including Chung Ying Theatre Company, No-Man Zone, March Theatre, Line 4 Drama Company, 20-Bean, Box Picture, Red Calf Drama Company, Frog Island, Who Drama Society, Mute World and Zhuo Troupe, among others.
